Welcome to the 2011 NACA® Mid America Regional Conference! @thenacamam delegates— Welcome to Mid America Regional Conference! On behalf of the conference planning committee, I wanted to thank you for choosing our conference and tell you that we all hope you have a great conference experience! With 1000 students at the conference there should be a lot of excitement this weekend in the hotel and convention center. The theme for this conference is quite simply the NACA Twitter handle, @theNACAMAM. The theme is meant to reflect the growing connectedness of student activities and how all of us are using social media more than ever to help with programming and publicity. We hope you get in the spirit of @theNACAMAM and begin following some of the showcasing acts on Twitter; their handles are all listed in the program. You can also follow anyone on the conference team, as all of their handles are listed as well. I encourage you to follow each other. Twitter can be an amazing resource for this conference, so if you haven’t already joined the online conversation, consider doing it now! By following @theNACAMAM and #NACAMAM, you will enhance your conference experience in all of the main areas of the conference: Showcases, Block Booking and Ed Sessions. #showcases Follow acts and begin conversations about bringing them to your campus. This will save you time in the marketplace and allow you to see if other schools in the region are interested in #blockbooking with you. Agencies will also get your live feedback on performances. #CAMP Any booth changes will be tweeted, so you can stay up to date on where agencies are in the marketplace. We will also keep updating Twitter to alert you of any special guests in #CAMP. You can also arrange tweetups with other schools and tour #CAMP together! #blockbooking Get handles of delegates that you can #blockbook with, and work out dates online before you come to the #blockbooking meeting. This will save you some time in the meeting and help make sure you get the act you want on the date you want! And don’t forget social networking is another way to connect with your fellow programmers and performers at the conference. #NACALOVE Josh Gruenke 2011 Mid American Regional Conference Committee Chairperson @mamchair gruenkej1@nku.edu

Welcome to the NACA® Mid America Regional Conference!

On behalf of NACA, we invite you to enjoy your time in Covington at this year’s conference. Each year we look forward to presenting a stimulating regional event with a wealth of new information and a variety of entertainment acts for school attendees to consider bringing to their campuses. To our associate members, artists, performers and speakers, we welcome you to be a part of the excitement as schools preview talent, participate in Block Booking and select acts. This is a wonderful venue for you to showcase your talent and share information with our member schools throughout the region. There are many opportunities available during the next few days, so please take time to review your program guide for all of the activities, educational sessions, marketplace hours and showcases. We also advise you to network with schools, students and exhibitors. We would like to thank our hard working and dedicated program volunteers and conference chair, Josh Gruenke, for their effort in presenting this year’s Mid America Conference. Thank you for joining us and have a wonderful time!

NACA POLICIES

NACA’s Mission NACA links the higher education and entertainment communities in a business and learning partnership, creating educational and business opportunities for our student and professional members. NACA’s Definition of Diversity Diversity is an attribute and a goal. As an attribute, diversity is ethnic identification/race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status and the many other aspects of our lives which define the family of humanity. As a goal, diversity refers to the intentional valuing, respecting and inclusion of all peoples. NACA recognizes the diversity of all its members and supports the development and implementation of programs and services that achieve this goal. Non-Discrimination, Diversity Advancement and Affirmative Action Principles NACA is committed to advancing diversity development and the principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action through its respective programs, services and volunteer involvement. To ensure compliance with these principles, the organization: • Will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ethnic background or disability in any of their policies, procedures or practices • Will promote vigorous efforts to enhance, develop and increase a diverse volunteer pool in all areas of the Association • Will actively promote diversity in their programs and services • Will expect all volunteers and NACA Office staff to consistently display a sensitivity to diversity and the principles of affirmative action • Will promote the importance of eliminating discriminatory and/or culturally insensitive language, behavior and content from NACA-sponsored activities and will urge all members and guests of the Association to cooperate in this effort. There is no intent to support censorship. The purpose is to induce thought and advance planning in an effort to ensure that showcase performances, Campus Activities Marketplace displays, educational sessions and other NACA-sponsored activities reflect appropriate diversity and sensitivity in their plans and actions. Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Policy The National Association for Campus Activities and the NACA Foundation recognize the serious threats that alcohol and other substance abuse present to college populations, the entertainment industry and to society as a whole. We realize that our Association is not immune to the problems associated with abuse. NACA is committed to addressing this issue through various activities, programs and educational efforts on regional and national levels. All NACA members and volunteers are encouraged to uphold the Association’s statement in spirit and action; however, NACA has no responsibility for the conduct or behavior of event attendees. Alcohol served outside of any official event (an official event is one endorsed or hosted by NACA) is not the responsibility of NACA, but is instead the responsibility of the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity. All responsibility for determining whether participants at the activity are underage and for complying with applicable state and local laws rests solely with the individual/group/firm coordinating, hosting, promoting or holding the activity and is not in any way the responsibility of NACA or any of its employees or representatives. In the event that NACA becomes the subject of a claim or loss arising from violation of this policy by any person, group or business entity, or service of alcohol at any non-official event, that person, group or business entity agrees that it shall indemnify and hold harmless NACA from and against all resulting claims and losses, including NACA’s costs and attorney’s fees, that arise from or relate to violation of this policy and/or service of alcohol at said non-official event. NACA Statement Regarding Legal Drinking Age The legal drinking age is 21. The conference hotel and facilities will not tolerate alcoholic beverages carried in open containers by anyone on these properties. NACA will not allow alcohol to be carried into showcases or the Campus Activities Marketplace. NACA Statement on Showcases Attendance at showcase events is voluntary and it is the responsibility of the attendee to determine whether a particular event poses a risk to the attendee. Some element of risk may be associated with some showcase events. Some events may include hypnosis and some individuals may be more susceptible to hypnosis than others. The attendee accepts all responsibility for all consequences associated with attending showcase events and NACA is held harmless against all claims arising from any result of attending a showcase event.

2011 NACA® MID AMERICA REGIONAL CONFERENCE

If you desire special services because of a disability, handicap or special need, please indicate the special service(s) on an attached sheet of paper and return it to the address indicated in these registration materials as early as possible and at least six weeks in advance of the first day of the conference. If the Association is unable to provide the special service(s) you requested and you do not attend the event, the Association will refund your registration fee. Special Dietary Needs Please indicate the need for special meals on the registration form. Special meals may not be available at all sites. Videotaping/Photography Policies NACA photographs and videotapes events and attendees. These photographs and video images may be used in any NACA materials and publications and on the NACA web site. By attending this event, you, your delegates and/or the acts you represent give NACA consent to use photographs and video images in which you, your delegates and/or your acts appear. NACA delegates or other persons may use photographic, videotape or other image and sound recording devices to record events and activities that take place during NACA events, as long as these activities do not interfere with the audience enjoyment of or participation in NACA events. Those photographing, videotaping or otherwise recording events cannot interfere with showcase technical crew, stagehands, etc. The following specific guidelines apply to any photography, videotaping or other recording at an NACA event: 1. Professional crews will not be allowed; 2. On-stage filming or placement will not be allowed. Recording must occur from the show floor; 3. Access to the soundboard will not be allowed; 4. Audience views cannot be obstructed; 5. Power must be self-contained (i.e., battery packs). Access to the event power supply will not be allowed; 6. Use of supplemental lighting will not be allowed; 7. Some forms of recording/taping may not be available at specific venues due to union or other facility regulations; 8. Recording/taping of some materials may require the permission of the owner of such materials and it is the recorder’s responsibility to obtain such necessary permissions. If audience members, showcase crew or other technical, conference or facility staff complain about the position of a camera/operator, the camera/operator will be asked to move. If the camera/operator does not comply, they will not be allowed to continue taping. BY USING VIDEOGRAPHIC AND/OR OTHER RECORDING DEVICES TO RECORD NACA EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, THE RECORDER REPRESENTS THAT HE/SHE HAS OBTAINED ALL NECESSARY PERMISSIONS FROM ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR OTHER ENTITIES WHOSE RIGHTS MAY BE AFFECTED. THE RECORDER AGREES TO INDEMNIFY NACA, ITS EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY ARISING FROM THE RECORDER’S VIDEOTAPING OR RECORDING ACTIVITIES. Event Cancellation Policy NACA reserves the right to cancel any program. Causes for cancellation may include, but are not limited to, low participation by schools and/or associates, acts of God, etc. In the case of a program cancellation, NACA will only reimburse fees paid to NACA; any travel, lodging or other non-NACA fees will not be reimbursed. NACA Civility Statement Prominent among the values that define the NACA community is civility, which includes mutual respect, fairness and politeness. Membership in any community requires a concern for the common good for all who belong to that community. Each individual may possess different ideas, as well as different ways of communicating those ideas, particularly in a community as varied and diverse as an association. Because of these differences, respect and civility are integral to maintaining the quality of the association environment. Respect and civility should therefore be afforded to all individuals regardless of role within the association. This includes treating people with courtesy and consideration, acting and speaking judiciously and behaving professionally. All members of the association community are called upon to promote and value this ethic of common respect and civility. We will encourage discussion with a goal of instilling an appreciation for the importance of fair-mindedness, personal responsibility and respect for differing opinions. At such occasions, members will always be strongly encouraged to observe common standards of decorum and to display a respectful tenor. We will also consider appropriate steps to be taken when members of our community do not respect these standards.

2011 NACA® MID AMERICA REGIONAL CONFERENCE

SAVE MONEY BUILD RELATIONSHIPS DEVELOP SKILLS Just as in 1960, when a group of school representatives formalized a simple and practical idea to increase the buying power of their campus programming dollars, BLOCK BOOKING continues to be a cornerstone of NACA. Whether you approach the process from a money-saving standpoint or a student development perspective, the advantages to school members, associate members and artists/performers are many.

Benefits: • Saving money • Bring in more diverse talent by partnering with surrounding schools • Develop long-lasting partnerships with agencies and artists • Support green environmental efforts by eliminating excessive travel • Educate students in the art of negotiation, organizational skills and contracting • Create avenues for students to pursue future careers

Does Block Booking really work? Yes! A student affairs professional who uses Block Booking had this to say: In addition to leadership training, attendance at the conferences saves SAC a great deal of money in contract fee discounts, which are offered to schools who commit to acts at the conference.  Last year, SAC saved approximately $9,050 in contract fees by attending the regional and National conferences.  By setting many of their Fall ‘10 programs at the National Convention in February, SAC was able to save approximately $3,100 in contract fees for the coming semester that would not have been discounted had delegates not been present at the Convention.

—Angie Dunlap, University of Memphis (TN) For more information onBlock Booking, visit www.naca.org/BlockBooking/Pages/BBIN20.aspx.

After playing in different bands for many years, this time they knew things were going to be epic. They decided to take matters into their own hands to get noticed, by recording and financing their album on their own—all done with a one-year interest-free credit card! Then, 2,487 cups of coffee and 130 broken drumsticks later, FCFS emerged with an amazing full-length album entitled The Frequency of Hydrogen. A year later hip hop artist Akon signed them to his label Kon Live Distribution, declaring “I just signed the biggest rock band in the world.” Ready to conquer the world, Flight Case For Sushi constantly stay busy dedicating their lives to their band and their listeners.

Uneasy with being in one place for too long, David repeatedly finds himself on the road playing his brand of modern Americana that fans have coined “Folk-Brewed Pop”. Paste Magazine recently declared David “the best damn songwriter you don’t know yet”. David Ramirez knows no luxury. He wants no satisfaction. All he needs is an acoustic guitar and the words in his mouth to tell the true stories of a wandering man. But to see him live, with only that acoustic guitar in hand, spitting those words into rings of fire, is to experience something real...something that cannot be reproduced. In fact, the Mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell, proclaimed May 26, 2011 “David Ramirez Day”.

That car was driven by an 18-year-old who was on his cell phone and never saw the light. Good’s parents were killed instantly and Jacy almost died herself. She still suffers from a variety of permanent and near-debilitating injuries. Good has now devoted her life to spreading the message on the dangers of distracted driving. Performers play a myriad of characters with numerous costume changes. They find humor in everything from Jewish involvement in the Dutch slave trade to two rednecks on a joy ride of hate, from a bar mitzvah boy explaining the cash kickstart his manhood receives, to octogenarian grandmothers singing and dancing about the joys of soul food and Jewish comfort food. Their success has prompted the development of The Black Jew Dialogues Curriculum, which has been highly praised by educators who have used it. They were formed in 2006 in St. Louis, MO and by combining the varied influences of its members, they make a sound that well-respected audio engineer, Paul Hennerich, described as “P-Funk meets Pink Floyd.” The Illphonics are ready to connect with audiences as diverse as their sound. The unlikely formation of the band in 2006 was initiated by Illphonics frontman and emcee, Larry “Fallout” Morris, when he was an Audio Production student at Webster University. He decided to make use of the school’s recording studio to record an album and called on his U. City High comrades Keith Moore (keys), Chaz Brew (drums) and Simon Chervitz (bass), as well as fellow Webster classmate, Kevin Koehler (guitar), to provide the songs and instrumentation. After four years of rehearsals, shows and recordings, the band’s music has evolved into something the band likes to call the “Illphonics Sound”—changing with each member’s personal growth.

But she also wanted to make money. So naturally, she went into sales. That didn’t work. Next was a stint as a cruise ship director and eventually Tracey figured it out. Now a professional comedian, Tracey is living the life her southern born and bred grandmother envisioned—just a detail or two adjusted. Following a run to the semifinals on Last Comic Standing, Tracey was voted Campus Activities Magazine’s Female Performer of the Year and was the most booked act at the 2011 NACA® National Convention. Touring comedy clubs, colleges and the occasional TV set near you, Tracey tells stories of her past and present and makes you laugh. Like it’s her job.

Kober’s powerful performances weave together a southern-style tale of love lost at the buffet, road trip adventures at The Waffle House and midnight mishaps at Wal Mart. Kober commands the stage and dares you not to laugh as she takes you through an hourlong ride that is sure to leave you humming the tunes and buying the t-shirts! You will see her in two films this season—Heckler and Cool Dogs. Her reality show Big Dish is in production. Jen has performed with Dane Cook, Wayne Brady, Kevin Pollack, Dana Carvey, George Lopez, Andrew Dice Clay, Carlos Mencia, Kevin Nealon, Dave Atell and Sinbad. www.KoberComedy.com

He does this right in front of the crowd while keeping them completely engaged and involved. He has shared the stage with a diverse lineup from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Metallica to Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band. At his first NACA® showcase last year, he was the most-booked act of the conference. Preston Pugmire is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

They recently have been part of Fort Minor, Mike Shinoda’s (Linkin Park) side project, touring the world. They have drawn rave reviews from and worked with the likes of P.Diddy, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent and Ludacris. Pianist Bobby Campbell’s parents certainly didn’t. “They said I was in school to learn, not to start a band,” he muses. But as they became one of Indiana University’s most popular on-campus bands in 2009, South Jordan’s fun, irresistibly catchy songs won over hearts on the internet, where they quickly amassed over 100,000 fans. This helped gain the attention of Island Records—home to U2, Bon Jovi and The Killers—who signed the band in 2010. With the forthcoming release of their debut album, South Jordan is a band on the rise, proving to moms and dads across America that starting a college band just might not be such a bad idea after all!
