THE Welsh Society and Friends of the Sunshine Coast will celebrate 28 years of gatherings on the Sunshine Coast with a family picnic to recover a time capsule on Sunday, August 15. The capsule was buried on October 8, 1998, at the Cwm Glas property at Belli, near Eumundi, (pictured) and its contents kept secret. The site is guarded by a stone circle and two Custodians of the Capsule were appointed. Five children who were at the first gathering of the society were appointed Junior Custodians of the Capsule. James and Gwenllian O’Neil founded the Welsh Society and Friends of the Sunshine Coast on March 1, 1993, when 22 adults and five children gathered at The Lions’ Park at Coolum Beach. They introduced themselves, sang the Welsh National Anthem with gusto and enjoyed a picnic. Gatherings have continued with a lunch on St David’s Day on March 1; an annual Cymanfa Ganu celebration of Welsh music, singing, and culture; Christmas lunch in December; and social gatherings for further opportunities to meet like-minded friends. The society welcomes those born in Wales, who have lived in Wales, have
Welsh roots or simply an interest in Wales to celebrate Welsh culture and history. For more details email wssc@ welshsunshinecoast.com or call Evan Jenkins 0428 224 503. Visit welshsunshinecoast.com
