The big question Before beginning your renovation, it’s vital that you answer a few big questions – what is your budget, what are your priorities, what projects will be DIY and what projects will you hand over to a professional? Once you have these big questions answered, you will find yourself feeling more confident with clear direction.

Budget friendly My Renovation’s resident project expert Emilia Johnston shares some tricks to saving money. For more from Emilia, turn to page 14. • Improve storage through better layout or cabinets rather than moving walls to make rooms bigger. • Install a sky light instead of windows to increase natural light. • Keep plumbing where it is and redesign around it. • Decide on your fittings and materials early so you can watch for specials. Buying at last minute or in a hurry usually costs more. • Use lookalikes where you can and quality where it counts most. • Buy in bulk when it comes to fans, lights door handles and taps. • Pay with cash if it’s cheaper. • If paying with a credit card make sure you earn points towards products you can buy for the renovation. • Just change cupboard doors and handles. Or, paint them.
