AMAZON TAKES TO THE SKIES deliver the items to customers just 30 minutes after they made their purchase on Amazon.com. “I know this looks like science f ction. It’s not,” Bezos says. “We can do half-hour delivery…and we can carry objects, we think, up to f ve pounds [2.3 kilograms], which covers 86 per cent of the items we deliver.” The mini-drones could cover areas within a 16-kilometre radius of fulf lment centres, thus covering a signif cant portion of the population in urban areas. They operate autonomously and drop the items at the target locations thanks to GPS co-ordinates transmitted to them. “It’s very green, it’s better than driving trucks around,” says Bezos. Amazon says the octocopters will be “ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place,” noting that the Federal Aviation Administration is actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles. Bezos hints that part of the motivation behind the mini-drones is to make sure Amazon remains on the cutting edge of the retail industry. “Companies have short life spans … And Amazon will be disrupted one day,” he said. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos mazon CEO Jeff Bezos has revealed his company is looking to the future with plans to use ‘octocopter’ minidrones to f y small packages to consumers in just 30 minutes. A man accused of staging a fall on a banana skin in a US metro station lift has been charged with fraud. Washington Metro says 42-year-old Maurice Owens sued the transit agency for $US15,000 ($16,570) claiming he injured his left leg and hip in a fall at the Potomac Avenue station in August. Surveillance video shows Owens dropping a banana skin. He steps on the peel as the lift door opens, and the video shows him appearing to thrust himself forward and falling to the ground. The claim against Metro was thrown out, and Owens has been charged with felony second-degree fraud. AAP
