he last time I was on a bike I fell off. And no it wasn’t dramatic enough to be interesting. I was riding with friends on a relatively mild bush track and hit a rock. And when I say I fell off, well, it was more like a plop. The rock slowed me down to the point where the bike had no momentum to remain upright and it listed to the right. I gave myself a few nasty scratches. It’s not as good as my sister’s story. Not being much of a rider as a child, she was determined to enjoy her pushie as a teenager, and headed out from the Pearson family’s Buddina home for an incident-free spin around the block. Rather chuffed at her achievement, she headed back into the driveway, was thrown by the lip of the gutter and promptly took out the letterbox. Not a bad effort as it was set in concrete and had
] survived much worse than a 13-year-old on a Malvern Star, but then, nothing lasts forever. Anyway, they say if you fall off a bike you should just get straight back on, and it seems the Sunshine Coast is listening. The roads, parks and pathways are brimming with bikes. But when cars are involved, too often a quick ride ends with broken bones or much, much worse. It can be a bit of a battlef eld out there, and on one side we have Lycra, on the other cold, hard metal. So this week our cover story is dedicated to the pushie, its popularity and its perils. Researching this story I discovered the number of bike riders is indeed on the rise, and so is the message about safety. If you’re a motorist who thinks bikes have no place on our roads, or you’ve ever shaken your f st at a rider, well sorry, get used to more of them, and turn the page to read our story.
