After a tragic surfing fatality at Maroochydore on October 8, 1922, there were moves to step up beach safety at Maroochydore, Coolum and Mooloolaba. At a meeting of the Maroochy Shire Council held that year, Councillor J Lindsay moved that five guineas be given “for financial assistance towards the cost of patrolling the beach” at Mooloolaba that Christmas. Members of the Mooloolaba River Sports Club, encouraged by the local Progress Association, moved to provide the patrols. club became the Mooloolaba Sports and Life Saving Club. The first building used by the newly named club had been a derelict old sugar shed listed for demolition by the Progress Association. A new shed was constructed on the beach and officially opened on October 14, 1923, located about 80 metres south of the present club. The life saving club quickly became one of Mooloolaba’s main attractions and was described by the Chairman of the Royal Life Saving Society as “the most go-ahead club in Queensland”. By March 1930 there were 70 club members, 11 of them women. In 1936, talk began of building a new club house, and 12 months later the council approached the State Government for a subsidised loan of 400 pounds. Along with community fundraising, enough money was collected to build a new two-storey building, officially opened on March 26, 1939. It even had electric power!
