soft-roaders and all-paw versions of the Golf and Passat. The diesel is a beauty – a two-litre, four-cylinder powerplant producing 120 kilowatts and a hefty 400Nm of torque. Just as importantly, VW claims its 7.7l/100km thirst makes it the most fuel-efficient ute on the Aussie market – which is where it hopes to put the acid on the HiLux. What did impress was the big VW’s assured handling and supple ride. Coupled with the nicely finished, nicely appointed interior, with acceptably low levels of cabin noise, the Amarok capably crosses the tricky divide between work ute and family transport. It also looks the part – its dimensions are imposing and safety is also well catered for with front and passenger plus head-thorax airbags across the range. Electronic Stability Program and Brake Assist are also standard. So can it threaten the HiLux? That might be some way off. The Toyota has an enormous headstart and an astonishing loyalty from its band of admirers. But those buyers would be well-advised to give the Amarok a second look. And Goliath might want to keep an eye on the Amarok, too.

Step up to the Trendline model and you’ll get things like cruise control, multi-function dash display and fog-lights, plus 16-inch alloys and carpets on the floor. All-wheel-drive is standard. The Highline model adds some extra chrome and bigger alloys, with climate control air-con, upgraded audio and some leather on the wheel and gearshift. We tested the Amarok in its most luxurious form – the Ultimate model which offers not only leather trim but also a top-notch audio system, dualzone air-conditioning and plenty of other trimmings. All models come with a two-litre turbo-diesel engine, with a six-speed manual. The Amarok is not yet offered with VW’s excellent DSG semi-auto. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is the same as that found on VW models such as the Touareg and Tiguan
