Contact lenses Contact lenses have improved drastically, the silicon hydrogel lenses have more oxygen permeability for the cornea and are healthier for the eye. The contact lenses should be replaced daily, monthly or biweekly according to the type of contact lens being used. There are extended wear contact lenses approved by FDA which can be used for one month and you can sleep with them in. The multifocal contact lenses give you pretty good vision for distance and near but they will not be as crisp and clear as with your glasses. The colored contact lenses are available as spherical and Toric but we have some limitations in fitting them as they are not available in all axis. The rigid gas permeable lenses are of different types spherical, Toric, Bitoric and Multifocal. They give you more clarity of vision and more oxygen for the cornea but they may change the shape of the cornea. The bandage contact lenses are used for corneal abrasions to enhance the proper healing of the cornea The overuse of the lenses may cause infection of the eye and damage the cornea. If your eyes get red and sensitive to light while using the contact lens, the possibility of having contact lens induced keratitis is fairly high. In this case, you should stop using the lenses and contact your eye doctor immediately. The contact lens induced infections are treated by antibiotics or a combination of the antibiotic and steroid drops depending on the condition of the cornea. The contact lens use should be discontinued during the treatment and you may start using the contacts again when the doctor allows you to do so. The contacts should be cleaned by the prescribed contact lens solution. The contact lens case should be disposed on month or 2 monthly basis in order to avoid infections.
