A Fear of Santa

Fear of Strangers

He’s loved by millions across the globe, but to a very young child Santa can be scary. Children ages 2-3 may experience anxiety about strange looking people. If your child hesitates to sit with Santa, avoid forcing the issue, or keep your child in your arms and stand in for a family photo.

Grandparents eagerly await the holidays so they can spend quality time with their grandchildren, but if your tot hasn’t spent much time with his or her grandparents, don’t expect the child to quickly warm up to his relatives. Give your child time to meet and greet relatives, and to approach them when ready. Ask relatives to hold off on picking your child up, or hugging or kissing your child until it’s clear that he’s ready for the attention.

Fear of Strange Grumpy Behaviors Sounds or Due to Change in Sights Routines Who doesn’t love holiday music and beautiful light displays? Young children may not welcome strange sights and sounds, and loud and unfamiliar noises may be especially scary to them. Introduce a timid infant or toddler gradually to these strange experiences, so he’ll learn to love them as much as you do.

Child Development Resources, (CDR) provides direct services to children and families in the Historic Triangle, and to the professionals who serve them. For more information or to donate, visit www.cdr.org, facebook.com/CDR.org or call 757-566-3300.

The holiday season throws just about everyone off schedule, but toddlers and infants who are used to a routine may not adapt well to the change. Grumpy behavior, crying or temper tantrums may result if your tot skips a nap or experiences a change in his or her schedule. Do your best to keep to your child’s routine, and don’t be afraid to adjust your holiday schedule if your child doesn’t respond well to the changes.

This is how her dad describes Virginia Beach native and Brooklyn-based writer, Grace Bonney, who is the creator of a popular design blog called Design*Sponge. In 2004 Grace was declared a “Martha Stewart Living for the Millenials” by the New York Times. She attended Friends School as a preschooler.

Do the words “math homework” strike fear in your child…or you? We can change that fear into better grades and higher self-confidence, and eliminate the frustration, tears, and fights over math homework.

Lick it up Mini spatulas in holiday colors and designs make every bite of cookie batter a delight for the tongue and the eyes. (It’s not the best thing to do with those raw eggs, but it’s so hard to resist!) $8.99 at Dillard’s, MacArthur Center Mall, Norfolk.

L

IFE IS NEVER YUMMIER than during the holidays, especially if your children like to bake. I’m blessed because both of mine have been scooping up flour and cracking eggs since they could stand. This

year, I’ll make our cookie-baking tradition (chocolate chips are our favorite) even sweeter with these extra ingredients.

Sweet server Stylin’ like Mrs. Claus

Everything in your kitchen will look almost as good as your cookies with kitchenware such as this gingerbread lady, making it easier to move your cookies from the pan to the cooling rack in style. $14.99 at Dillard’s, MacArthur Center Mall, Norfolk.

Aprons are a must, no matter your age, when baking – and your tweens and teens will be pleased to cover up in a cool way with either a Mr. Claus or a Mrs. Claus apron. $19.99 at Kirklands’, MacArthur Center Mall, Norfolk.

Dominion Holidays at the Gardens

McDonald’s Holiday Lights

Celebration in Lights

Virginia Beach Oceanfront from 2nd-34th Street

Newport News Park

Think the sea mixed with the North Pole – with lots and lots of light bulbs. Dancing fish, dolphins, and porpoises will entertain you along the boardwalk, in addition to more traditional holiday stars, like Santa, his elves and beautiful trees. This is your only chance to drive on the boardwalk –and you can enjoy holiday music as you do with the price-included CD you’ll receive. You’ll see why the Southeast Tourism Society named this a “Top 20 November Events” and the American Bus Association listed it as a “Top 100 Events in North America for 2011.” Drive into the holiday spirit Sunday–Thursday, 5:30 p.m.–10 p.m. and Friday–Saturday, 5:30 p.m.–11 p.m. The cash-only price is Monday–Thursday, $10; and Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, $15 for cars; limos: $25, busses: $45, and mini-busses: $25. A limited number of combo tickets for this and the Norfolk Botanical Garden of Lights are available for $20.

For 20 years, Newport News Park has been transformed with over 800,000 individual lights to create animated and beautiful holiday scene. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this event, Virginia’s first drive-thru lights display, decorators have added a new 300-feet long animated tunnel of lights, new tubes to create the effect of falling snow, new grapevine light balls, and a new 22-feet tree. Green-friendly visitors will be happy to know that all new display pieces added since 2007 use LED lights that result in a savings of approximately 30 percent on electrical cost compared to incandescent bulbs. Older displays are being refitted with LED lights. On Friday nights, the first 500 vehicles will receive a promotional gift. Hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. through New Year’s day. The price is $10 per car and $60 per bus (cash, credit cards, and checks made payable to the City of Newport News are accepted; advance/ gift tickets may be purchased at the Newport News Visitors Center). Call 926-1400.

Regent University’s Founders Inn and Spa The Inn celebrated its 21st Grand Illumination in November and keeps the lights on nightly through the holiday season. Millions of lights dance each night as guests enjoy special shows, rides and food. Zip through the cold air on Verbolten, the park’s newest rollercoaster (that goes indoors as well as out), and climb to the top of the park on “Nacht Tower” (otherwise known as Mach Tower) and enjoy a slow, spinning ride down 240 feet so you can view the park like Santa and his reindeer would. Then warm up with some special peppermint fudge hot chocolate or other treats at one of the many restaurants. The fun is available select nights until Dec. 31 and prices start at $27.50. Next month’s question I do not have a relationship with my father because he chose to be absent most of the time I was growing up. My twins, age 5, are very close to their dad (my husband). They are beginning to ask a lot of questions about my dad and why he is not a part of our lives. How do I explain this situation to them? The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 1RW\HWUDWHGOLNH3*,QWKHDWHUV 2NIRUNLGVKWWSZZZ WKHKREELWFRP

The first of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy finds Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the bl ue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the Wild and through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs, deadly Wargs, Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters, Sorcerers, and of

course, the creature named Gollum. Bilbo learns what we already know: a simple gold ring is tied to the fate of Middle Earth.

Like so many other family movies lately, the Oscar-winning Monsters, Inc. is getting a new 3D theatrical release. John Goodman and Billy Crystal star in this classic Pixar movie about a group of monsters who generate their city’s power by scaring children. But they’re not so courageous when it comes to human kids contaminating their world -- which is exactly what happens when little Boo (voiced by Mary Gibbs) disrupts

Is it time for Tom Cruise to hang up his action-hero hat? I don’t think so. The star of Mission Impossible and Knight and Day still knows how to kick you know what, and this crime thriller has a great literary tie-in, as it’s based on a book by Lee Child. When five people are shot dead by an expert sniper in a heartland city, the cops quickly identify and arrest the culprit. But the accused man claims he’s innocent

and says, “Get Jack Reacher. Yep, that’s when Tom Cruise shows up to do some whoopin’. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this movie also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall.

After the presents are unwrapped and the dinner consumed, hop out to see this fun movie on Christmas Day. Billy Crystal plays an old school grandpa who’s accustomed to calling the shots. But he meets his match when he and his eager-to-please wife Diane (Bette Midler) agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents (Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott) go away for work. You guessed it -- 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane’s old school methods of tough rules.

There’s always some sort of drama taking place in the MLP world, isn’t there? This movie centers on a magical empire that’s suddenly appeared in the arctic north of Equestria. Princess Celestia needs Twilight Sparkle and her friends to find a way to protect it. While her friends try to keep the Crystal Ponies occupied at the Crystal Faire, Twilight Sparkle searches for the hidden Crystal Heart that’s the key to keeping their empire safe from harm. We know it’ll all work out.

Everyone’s favorite little clownfish surfaced this year when a 3D version of Finding Nemo was released in theaters. Now it gets a Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition, including a blu-ray, blu-ray 3D, DVD and digital copy, all in highdefinition with cool interactive 3D bonus features. You know the story: In the depths of the Great Barrier Reef, Marlin (Albert Brooks), an overly protective clownfish, embarks on a daring rescue mission when his beloved son, Nemo, gets scooped up by a diver. With his unforgettable friend Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) by his side, Marlin encounters an ocean full of characters on his momentous journey

to find Nemo. It’s no wonder this fish tale scored an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003.

Babes In Toyland

The Dark Knight Rises

Go retro with this 1961 film, the first true live-action musical from the Walt Disney Studio, Tommy Sands pairs up with Annette Funicello, along with the famous Ray Bolger and Ed Wynn, and Disney staples Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran. The story takes place in Mother Goose land, where villains shrink our heroes down to toy size, and our heroes must enlist help from the toys in the Toymaker’s shop to fight back. Great special effects for the time, including stop motion animation that brings the toys to life. Remember, this is 30 years before the computer animation in Toy Story!

Just in time to wrap in colorful paper and pop under the Christmas tree. It’s been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) took the rap for Harvey Dent’s crimes, and the city of Gotham has turned against the caped crusader. Still, he’s a (albeit dark) hero, which means he’ll help out when the evil Bane (Tom Hardy) plots to destroy the city. 1. Measure and cut posterboard to be 7-inches high and wide enough to fit around your head.

1. Fill lid with Playdough.

1. Paint the head of the clothespin flesh tone. Paint legs (where clothespin separates) cream color. Paint midsection of the clothespin pink for the body. Let dry.

2. Place posterboard on flat surface. On one long edge, create large zigzag lines to make the points of the crown. Cut out points. 3. Paint crown with metallic paint. Let dry. 4. Embellish with rhinestones, sequins and gold trim. 5. Form into a cylinder shape to fit around your head. Secure with tape.

2. Place the bottom side of the pinecone into the clay to create the tree base. 3. Use toothpick to place a dot of glue onto one tip end of a pine cone branch. Top with a bead, sequin or glitter. 4. Repeat step 3 for other pine cone branches. Let dry. 5. To create snowfrosted trees, mix equal parts of shaving cream with glue and paint onto pine cone branches. Sprinkle with iridescent glitter and let dry.

2. Use markers to create facial features. 3. Draw two small, pink rectangles at the base of the clothespin to create ballet slippers. 4. Wrap pink pipe cleaner around the body, leaving ends open to create arms. Glue in place. 5. Cut and glue a strip of pink ribbon for the tutu. 6. Cut and glue a strip of gold ribbon for the crown. 7. Glue pompom to the back of the head to create a hair bun.

Nutcracker Facts: Frightful to Delightful The Nutcracker is a whimsical holiday tale that has delighted audiences of all ages for years. But it didn’t start that way. In 1816, German writer, E.T.A. Hoffman published a frightening story called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King that involved a bloody battle between a nutcracker and a seven-headed mouse. The story, however, was intended for adults, not children. In 1844, French author Alexandra Dumas adapted the story for younger audiences.

An adult should bake one or two medium-sized sweet potatoes either in the oven or microwave, and sit them aside and allow them to cool. An adult should cut open the potatoes, and kids can scoop out the flesh to make one cup. Kids can measure and add flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and ginger in a large bowl and stir them with a whisk to mix well. Kids can measure and add milk, eggs, and butter, and then the sweet potato flesh, to a medium bowl and stir them with a whisk to mix well. Kids can pour the sweet potato mixture over the flour mixture, add the dried cranberries, and, with a wooden spoon, stir them together until they are just blended. Adults should add a small amount of oil to a large sautĂŠ pan and heat it over medium-high heat. Adults should pour about 1/3 cup of the pancake mixture onto the pan and cook, without turning, until small bubbles just begin to appear on the top of the cake and the bottom side turns golden. Flip and cook the other side. Drizzle with maple syrup. Makes about a half-dozen pancakes.
