As always, the theme of St. John the Evangelist Parish Oktoberfest is the celebration of the parish’s German heritage. “According to the history books, John Hack, his wife, Johanna, and their 11 children, arrived here from Germany in September, 1837. John and his family were one of the first settlers to come to this area, then known as the Western Prairie or Prairie West.” Authentic German food, beer garden, German music, Chriskindlmarket, the “Rudesheimer Kaffee Haus” and new this year, Fr. Sammie Maletta’s Gourmet Food Booth (Saturday Only) to help usher in the fall season. Father will make and sell the following desserts, German Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Crumble, and Apple Crumble, all of which will sell for $3.00 each. Nothing accompanies good German Oktoberfest Bier like roasted whole hog stuffed with a medley of German ingredients. The dinner comes includes roast pork, spaetzle, red cabbage (served warm) and a piece of bread. The cost of the dinner is $10.00. Father will also be selling “festival spaghetti sauce” for $6.00 per frozen container and 12 meatballs in a bag for $8.00. Fr. Maletta has warned that this is going to be one’s final opportunity to enjoy his culinary skills. He is “done”, “das ende”, and finite! Besides Fr. Maletta’s Gourmet Food Booth, plan on feasting on homemade bratwurst, hot German potato salad, noodles Genous Plumbing & Rodding Electric rodding done for as low as $15. Full service plumbing. and kraut, hot dogs, and German pretzels, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget the “Rudesheimer Kaffee Haus;” the little gem of last year’s Oktoberfest and reminiscent of a pastry shop from Rudesheim, a charming stop along the Rhine River. Delight in Rudesheimer Coffee, hot chocolate and coffee to take the chill from the brisk autumn days and evenings. Enjoy a scrumptious, as well as beautiful, slice of Black Forest cake, Apple Strudel, German chocolate cake and/or Pumpkin roll. Plenty of picnic tables will be on hand for families and friends to gather round. Of course, it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without the “Bier Garden”. Our “Bier Garden” features three varieties of authentic German bier on draft, HBs’ seasonal Oktoberfest

Your heartbreak, sickness, and failures are not empty. Those holes in your heart leave space for mercy to fill, making you complete. Your life story is proof of that, just like James. James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple with Beth Moore’s 8-session study of James: Mercy Triumphs. Once you get to know both the man and the Book of James, you’ll never be the same again.

Your Story is Powerful Tuesday Morning: 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. OR Tuesday Evenings: 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The Bible Study will begin October 1, 2013 and run for 8 weeks. The book fee is $16. For more information or to register contact Liz Austin at (708) 333-4222 or visit our website at sogfonline.com

Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.
