Visit the Lyonia Environmental Center

2150 Eustace Ave

The heat of summer is a great time for indoor activities. The exhibits at the Lyonia Environmental Center are meant to educate visitors about the area’s natural environment and how it can be sustained. This location is also the trailhead for the Lyonia Preserve. Named for the scrub plant, Rusty Lyonia, this preserve spans 360 acres of restored habitat. Along the three hiking trails (.4 miles, 1.2 miles, and 2.4 miles), you can observe a vital Florida ecosystem, particularly for the Florida scrub jay. The hike is a great opportunity to engage what you learned in the environmental center.

Zipline at Festival Park

191 Howland Blvd

Situated on a small lake, Festival Park is one of Deltona’s hidden gems. With majestic oak trees, lush grass, fun playground, and even a little dock, this place has something for everyone. On top of a fully loaded playground, there is –you guessed it – a zipline that the kids will love. Festival Park also features a boat launch for canoes, paddleboards, and small boats. The lake at Festival Park connects to the Lake Butler Chain. What a great way to observe and enjoy Florida’s natural beauty.

Fly a Kite at Campbell Park

1315 Briarwood Ave

Flying a kite at the park is the type of core summer memory that children will look back on fondly years from now. The

multi-purpose field at Campbell Park is the perfect spot to let ‘er rip!  Gazing up at the blue sky and embracing the wind and ground under your feet is a good way to center yourself in the present moment and appreciate your surroundings. Not to mention, it’s just plain FUN! Offering beach volleyball, tennis courts, playground, and walking trail, Campbell Park is a local favorite. Perhaps, the biggest highlight of this park is the waterfront boardwalk with two fishing piers and a two-story gazebo overlooking Lake McGarity.

Celebrate 4th of July at the Dewey O. Boster Park & Sports Complex

1190 Saxon Blvd

Nothing captures the joy of the 4th of July more than celebrating with the community. The City of Deltona is proud to present the “All-American Blast,” featuring food trucks, face painting, caricature artists, bounces houses, music, local vendors, and, of course, fireworks! The fireworks show begins at 9:15pm. Special events aside, Dewey Boster Park is a wonderful place to spend the day. Known for its athletic facilities, this 46-acre park has so much to offer, including three pavilions, three children’s playgrounds, an exercise station, a serene walking trail, and multiple sports fields. The playgrounds have several structures, including swings and slides, and is surrounded by beautiful landscaping.

NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

A CITY OF DESTINY, OPPORTUNITIES, AND NEW BUSINESS

The City of Deltona, FL is a young city with its sights set on the future. What was once a retirement community is now the largest city in Volusia County. A city of destiny, opportunities, and new business. Corporations have discovered Deltona is a great place to do business. With over two and a half million square feet of commercial space, the opportunities are endless. Currently, that commercial space is being developed and with that development comes jobs!

We have many ongoing projects. Amazon owns a 1.4 million square foot fulfillment center and they plan to expand. They have recently signed the contracts for the one million square feet of logistics space adjacent to them. This should bring many additional opportunities for work. Other projects under construction include Halifax Crossing. This 109-acre development plan includes Halifax Village, a 55+ community and assisted living community. This development will come with over three hundred medical-related jobs! But that’s not all- hotels, retail, and restaurants will also come to the area allowing the current community to enjoy a day out and about.

Additionally, Synergy is coming to Normandy Blvd. This project includes 230,000 square feet of warehouse, retail, and office space. Synergy will have space to bring thirty to forty businesses to the City of Deltona. On Normandy Blvd, there is a new 300-unit apartment complex. Integra Myst will be a 9-building, 4-story development, with nine unique floor plans ranging from 703 square feet to 1,300 square feet available in one, two, or three bedrooms. Integra Myst will offer several amenities to residents, including an open-air fitness

center, golf simulator, resort pool, dog wash & park, yoga room, aerobics room, cycle studio, and theater. Integra Myst is expected to open in late July or early August of 2023 and will be in addition to the Deltona Villages Project.

The Deltona Villages development is slated near Amazon and Epic Theaters. It includes nearly 53,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Additionally to the manufacturing space, they are building a second apartment complex with over 400 units. With the expected population in Deltona as large as it is, this brings great opportunities for small and big businesses alike, such as presenting new food options! A Starbucks is currently under construction near Howland and Graves. This will be the first Starbucks in the city. Panda Express has also submitted a request to build. They have plans to build next to Starbucks.

Across from the Deltona Villages, you have the Howland Blvd. Marketplace. The marketplace will be built between Wawa and the Forrest Lake Neighborhood. More food options like Tijuana Flats and Popeye’s will be found in the marketplace.

On the other side of the city is the Enterprise Osteen East Project. This project is 118 acres and is proposed to build 253 single-family homes. Apart from homes, the project will include retail as well as office spaces.

Deltona is proud to focus on job creation. In the fourth quarter of 2022, our labor force reached 46,537 with an unemployment level of 2.9%. You could say “Deltona WORKS and has a bright future.”

12 MY DELTONA MAGAZINE SUMMER 2023

Marketplace.

LATINA-OWNED URBANO’S CLEANING LLC: EMPOWERING WOMEN AND TRANSFORMING THE CLEANING INDUSTRY

In just 1 year, Latina-owned Deltona-based cleaning company Urbano’s Cleaning has grown from 2 sisters to 2 teams servicing fifty residences, four Airbnb, and four commercial properties! Gloria and Alejandra Urbano Murillo got their start last year after quitting their jobs to begin a new adventure together. Gloria, 35, worked in the medical field authorizing oxygen orders, and Alejandra (known affectionately by many clients as Alexa) worked in the daycare industry. Growing up, their mother, who immigrated from Mexico, cleaned homes. Looking for a business opportunity that would usher in an exciting new season of life, Gloria called upon her younger sister to see if she was willing to take the plunge and do something new. Within 24 hours, they had both left their jobs and got to work on their cleaning empire! Whether call time is 9pm or 4am, you can count on Gloria and Alejandra to be there.

Urbano’s Cleaning is different than your typical cleaning service because they cater their agreements based on the individual property’s need, not a checklist of line upon line of service fees. They don’t believe in nickel and diming their clientele on futile costs like “dusting a lamp” for an additional $5 or wiping down doorknobs for another $10. They believe in the spirit of hospitality and superb customer service. This posture rapidly grew the sister’s business from two clients in the second month to nearly sixty just eleven months later. “It is possible,” Gloria tells My Deltona Magazine. She wants people to know that you can deliver excellent services while taking care of your team and remaining profitable. Gloria hopes to provide much-needed jobs for as many hard-working, Deltona-based Latina women as she can as it’s women like them that paved the way for her!

“Es posible”, dice Gloria a My Deltona Magazine.

Long-time City of Deltona employee Jerry Mayes announced his retirement takes effect June 1. Mayes, a 40-year resident of Deltona, served for twelve years as the Economic Development & Ecological Tourism Sustainability Manager.

Looking Back

He shared that his proudest achievement was spearheading the establishment of the Halifax Health/UF Health Medical Center. Before its opening in 2017, Deltona residents had to leave the city for medical care. “There were only 14 full-time doctors,” Mayes stated, “for 80,000 residents.” The ripple effect of his efforts was several more medical facilities opening in Deltona, like the Advent Health ER and Advanced Cardiovascular. There are also now three medical districts in the city. “All of this looped back into the educational side,” explained Mayes. Deltona High School’s Health Academy was developed in which students can be dual enrolled within the state college system and earn up to two years of college credit.

Mayes cites the establishment of the city’s first industrial park, Interstate-4 Logistics Park or I-4LP, as his second major accomplishment. It took five years of negotiations with

Australia and London-based Portland House of Companies to convince them to invest in Deltona. After persuading the owners that the city needed jobs and not more houses, the company developed the land on which a 1.4 million square foot Amazon Fulfillment Center employing 1500 people was built. A second 1 million square foot Amazon is planned for the park.

In addition to serving the community through his work with the city, Mayes was a member of the Economic Development Advisory Board, on the board of Directors of Volusia School District’s FUTURES Program, and served twice as the Chairperson for the Team Volusia Economic Developers Practitioners Council.

Looking Ahead

In retirement, Mayes plans to spend time with his grandchildren, fish more with his son in Mosquito Lagoon, and catch trout in North Georgia with his new fishing equipment. “Deltona has been a nice place to call home and raise kids.” Mayes looks forward to enjoying a slower pace in the community he feels “vested in.”
