FEBRUARY 13

2013

Week 2 rolling by already. After school today is our 'Q & A' session night. This is a chance for you to hear from your child's teacher a bit about how their classroom is operating this year. They will talk a bit about the nuts and bolts of everyday classroom activity and present some of the innovations that are developing throughout our classroom programmes. There will also be a chance for you to ask questions around the general classroom programme and the requirements for your child.  We also want to hear your ideas around what parent workshops we will run each term this year. There are some exciting developments continuing in our 'thinking' curriculum and with our mobile and electronic learning capabilities that we are intending to share with you later this term.  These include: • Further developing our thinking curriculum structure with the SOLO

Kia tu Pakari

(structure of observed learning outcomes) Taxonomy model. This provides a simple, reliable and robust model for three levels of understanding – surface deep and conceptual (Biggs and Collis 1982). They are simple yet effective in scaffolding students thinking into the effort they put in rather than them just being smart or lucky in their learning. • Making 'live' our Fibre connection which will open up increased capability for connected online learning. • Upgraded to a Ruckus wireless system installed to handle the fibre connection speed and the increased number of wireless devices being connected. • Online structured environment in which our students will be able to innovate and showcase their work in a managed way... check out the beginning of this via the

senior teams classroom blog pages linked off our website... • An increased number of iPad mini's provided by the school so we can give every student an equal opportunity to access and utilise our online learning resources.  Once all these developments are in place we will then be able to run some parent and student workshops that will demonstrate to you the structure and the intent of what we are working to develop in our students learning pathways. It is exciting times for our children's learning so watch this space… Don’t forget to book your 3 way conference time for next week. Details over the page. Regards Tim Lovelock Principal

Lastly, is there anyone who would like to supervise in the library on a Friday lunchtime? Mrs FM is not available on this

Week 2 Term 1 Kauri are getting great at knowing our class routines and remembering our learning goals.  We are talking about Incy Wincy Spider and how he had to try and try again to achieve his goal of climbing the spout.  Little by little we achieve success!  In our inquiry 'Standing Strong Together' we are finding out about what a group is, and discovering ways we can work well together as a team.  Our new homework maths basic facts ladder is underway.  Everyone should have their goal highlighted by today. We also have counting goals we are practising in class.  Ask your child what theirs is!   Certificates - Welcome to Taine Smith, and kapai George Bramer for great kotahitanga!

MANUKA 6 (Mrs Carr) We are practising for athletics in the afternoons and would like to say a big thank you to all the fantastic parent helpers that are coming along to coach us. Manuka homework is in full swing and it looks like the new system is being well received, especially the Learning License Levels information, what a great way to keep the conversations about work habits strong at home and school. Thank you to all the parents who will attend the Q & A session with me, if you are unable to make it, feel free to e-mail or pop in some time. Kind regards, Della Carr. Certificates: Ingrid Patterson for being focussed and on task in her learning. Hunter Cairns for settling into Myross Bush so smoothly.

TOTARA 7 (Miss Duncan) Athletics practice has started this week, it is great to see so many students participating and enjoying this. Suitable footwear for your child is really important as some of the activities are shotput and discus.  Homework schedules have been discussed and reinforced this week in the classroom, spelling words and basic facts ladders have begun.  Week 3/next week we will start our oral language/news rotations.  It is great to see so many enthusiastic students working so hard and diligently this week, ka pai Totara.  Miss Duncan

KOWHAI 8 (Mr Herring) We are well under way with our inquiry into teamwork and relationships this week. We are learning what it takes to be a 'crew' member of our class and not a 'passenger.' It would be great if your student could explain what this means. We're loving our athletics training that started this week, too. We have some very skillful and speedy students at our school. We have also been exploring how we will be using our Ultranet site to set tasks, share resources and store our learning examples. Next week we would love to have you visit our uspace and see what we are doing.
