Principal’s Welcome Higher Education in this city and region is vitally important to our socio-economic development.

On average more than 1,000 people are involved in Full-Time and Part-Time Higher Education at our College.

The breadth of study is outlined in this publication with an emphasis on Foundation Degrees, Higher Level Apprenticeships (Earn While You Learn), Higher National Diplomas / Certificates and Professional qualifications.

We also have a strong Access provision that provides a pathway into Higher Education for mature adults.

These two year degree programmes provide an immediate entry into key areas where there are jobs, such as Computing, Business, Engineering and the Health Sector. They will also allow you to complete a BSc or BA Degree with ‘top up’ at your own pace.

We need more of our young people to look at the local Higher Education option at North West Regional College. We can only build the economy we all aspire to through developing and maintaining our skills base in this city and region.

Therefore I would ask Parents, Principals and Careers Teachers to encourage our young people to consider the ‘near to home’ option for their Higher Education choice.

Sport & Events Life at NWRC is about so much more than just studying. It is also about broadening your horizons by embracing new experiences and building friendships right across the College.

Clubs and Societies A fantastic way to make the most of your time at NWRC is to join one (or more!) of the many clubs and societies that the College has to offer. Our Clubs and Societies are all 100% free so there’s no reason not to get involved.

If you can’t find a society that floats your boat, then why not set up your own? All you need are a number of like-minded people to help you run it, then simply contact us and we will sort out the rest.

Sports Clubs If you’re feeling sporty we offer a wide range of sporting activities through our Students’ Union. From football to martial arts, basketball to outdoor pursuits, we’ve got plenty to keep you busy!

The College also has a fully-equipped gym (located at Strand Rd campus) which is free for all NWRC students.

Our students often compete in local, national and international competitions in sports such as swimming, judo, karate, pool, ten-pin bowling and many more.

Elite Athlete Scheme Our Elite Athlete Scheme is a financial initiative established to reward the sporting achievements of our most talented sportsmen and women. Selected winners receive a monetary bursary along with additional training support and advice from the College’s Sports Department.

Each applicant is presented with an O’Neills NWRC sports kit and continue to play a full part in sport at the College by participating in various competitions and championships.

Live Shows and Performances Live performances from our Music and Performing Arts students always get top billing. In recent years our students have delivered a number of live performances in our Foyle Theatre, including Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Shaun of the Dead and The Big Lebowski.

Exciting Showcases and Competitions We frequently deliver popular showcases in Hair & Beauty, Art & Design and Hospitality, with competitions on-going throughout the year. Students studying a vocational course also have the opportunity to battle it out for the chance to represent the College in local, regional and International Worldskills competitions.

Masterclasses We host successful masterclasses throughout the year, giving students the opportunity to learn from leading professionals and influencers. Information for Parents We know just how important it is for your child to have a smooth transition from school to college and for you to be a part of that process.

We are fully committed to ensuring that your child has access to all the specialist support they need to help them successfully achieve their qualifications at North West Regional College.

Personal Tutor All full-time students are allocated a dedicated Personal Tutor, who will monitor their progress throughout their course, providing tailored support and guidance to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Our Personal Tutors offer a range of support services to our students while they study with us, including: Careers Support We deliver a wide range of bespoke programmes and interactive workshops to help students plan their education around a clear career path.

Learning Support Our Learning Link team provides additional support, guidance and resources to students with any learning, physical or mental health issues.

Student Services The team can provide advice and guidance on a wide range of areas, including EMA, Bus Passes and Financial Support.

Progress Coaches

Lower Tuition Fees

Our Progress Coaches will assist students throughout their time at the College. They work closely with students to monitor and help improve attendance, while also liaising with Personal Tutors to ensure students are progressing in their respective courses.

Students studying Higher Education at NWRC can expect significantly lower tuition fees than university, allowing them to live close to home and reduce travel and maintenance costs. The College also offers a comprehensive package of financial options to help support students during their study.

Work Experience We actively prepare our students for the world of work from day one. Our courses are designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge employers want.

Quality Teaching

Many of our courses include work experience, which provides students with the opportunity to apply the skills they have developed in class to a real work setting.

Students receive more teaching hours with NWRC than on most traditional university courses. Our classes are also much smaller which allows us to offer an exceptional level of one-to-one support they wouldn’t get anywhere else.

Industry Links We have excellent links with local, national and international employers who provide students with valuable work placement opportunities, masterclasses and site visits.

Many of our lecturers continue to work as industry professionals and offer extensive knowledge and experience of their specialist area.

For many adults, the decision to return to education is life-changing, opening up new career prospects and employment opportunities. Many are returning to college after a break in their education, some are looking to retrain for a new career, while others are trying to make the most out of opportunities they may not have had when they were younger. We believe that education is for everyone, regardless of age.

Every year the number of mature students attending Higher Education Colleges and Universities continues to grow. We value the diverse experience and life skills that mature students bring to our College community.

If you don’t have traditional A-Level / GCSE qualifications, we can take into account the knowledge and skills you have gained through work as a foundation for study in higher education.

The Students’ Union is made up of students of varying courses, age and gender, who support the general welfare of all students. It is the main channel of communication between students and College management, and organises a range of events and societies for students throughout the year.

A Students’ Union President and class representatives are elected at the beginning of each academic year.

The Students’ Union helps to organise Clubs & Societies, Freshers’ Week, Student Socials, Fundraising, European Travel, External Collaboration, Sporting Activities and Team Building. Union members also enjoy NUS-USI benefits such as travel and shopping discounts.

Widening Access and Participation Our aim is to improve well-being for everyone by providing academic pathways which are economically viable and lead to employment. The collaboration with the Universities is allowing ‘Access’ to Higher Education for adults who were previously made redundant, or change career direction, the unemployed or those who hadn’t considered progressing in education to access both Full and Part-time education allowing them to rethink their educational pathway.

Our Careers Academy has an inclusive ethos supporting the Widening Access and Participation Plan and ‘Access to Success’ with the Widening Access and Participation Officer working with disadvantaged communities and delivering the ‘Inspire’ programme.

Scholarships and Erasmus Funded Programmes We also support a Widening Access and Participation Bursary which is a scholarship aimed at Full-Time Higher Education students which helps with the cost of tuition fees from those from under-represented backgrounds.

In addition, we also offer a number of other significant Erasmus funded programmes. We understand that being involved in international projects can enhance innovation.

Research shows that student mobilities increase life experience of travel, which can greatly enhance learning.

Money Matters With significantly lower tuition fees compared to university many students are choosing to study Higher Education at North West Regional College, allowing them to live close to home and reduce travel and maintenance costs.

Tuition Fees Full-Time Study Fees for full-time Higher Education courses are £2,500* per annum.

Part-Time Study Part-Time tuition fees and concessionary rates can vary.

Payment of Tuition Fees Full-Time Higher Education Courses Students who have applied for a Tuition Fee Loan must provide a letter from the Student Loan Company (SLC) confirming that an application for a Tuition Fee Loan has been received. You will be liable for payment of the full fee if this letter is not provided.

If you have not received funding for your tuition fees from the SLC then your fee must be paid on enrolment however, Direct Debit / instalment arrangements are available for students to pay their fees on a monthly basis, no more than 4 monthly payment/instalments. These will begin on the 15th (or nearest working day) of the month following the date of enrolment.

Students who wish to avail of the Direct Debit / Instalment facility must pay an initial deposit of at least £400 on enrolment with the remaining balance being paid over a maximum of 4 instalments. Fees must be paid in full on or before 26th February 2022.

Part-Time Higher Education Courses The College offers a fee payment instalment plan for students who enrol on a part-time Higher Education course on or before 4th October 2021.

If your total fee is more than £200 you may pay a deposit and the required balance in instalments as outlined below.

Note: Anyone wishing to pay by instalments must set up a Direct Debit. Payments will be debited on or about the 5th of each month, commencing the month after enrolment.

Non-Payment of Tuition Fees Failure to pay the required Tuition Fees may result in one or more of the following: • You may be withdrawn from your course • You may not be able to sit exams for any NWRC course you are enrolled on • You may not be able to access any College facilities or our computer network • You may not be able to progress to the next year of your course, or enrol on an alternative NWRC course • Your name will not be included on any pass or graduation list We will aim to recover all outstanding money that is owed to the College.

Additional Fees • Graduation - If attending Graduation, students will be required to pay a £50 attendance fee.

• Access Courses - Students undertaking a university Access course will be required to pay an exam or registration fee. For UU Access full-time students the fee will be in the region of £250, whilst the fee for Queens (QUB) Access full-time for Health and Welfare will be £150. Fees for part-time students will be included in their tuition fee.

Student Loans and Grants Maintenance Grant UK students studying Higher Education courses may apply for a non-repayable means-tested Maintenance Grant. You also have the option of applying for a Maintenance Loan, to assist with living costs and Tuition Fee Loan, to cover the cost of your tuition fees.

You will need to complete a PN1 form which is avail online by visiting studentfinanceni.co.uk.

NWRC College Bursary Full-Time Higher Education students with a household income of less than £19,203* may be eligible for an NWRC College bursary of up to £500 per academic year (subject to assessment).

Qualifications Explained With such a wide range of qualifications to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which is the right option for you. So we’ve put together the following guide to help you understand what each one offers.

Foundation Degree A Level 5 qualification, which combines college study with work-based learning. After completing a Foundation Degree you can usually progress directly into year two or final year of a Level 6 degree programme at university.

A Foundation Degree can be completed full-time over two years or 3 years part-time.

Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) A work-based programme, which offers the opportunity to gain quality training and a recognised higher qualification while in paid employment. Upon completion, you will have gained a Foundation Degree qualification and two or three years of industry experience.

The aim of a HLA is to improve business practice by developing a skilled and experienced workforce.

Higher National Diploma (HND) A Level 5 qualification that is equivalent to the second year of a degree programme. A HND is a work-related course provided by further and higher education colleges.

After completing a HND you can often progress straight into year two or final year of a university degree course.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) A Level 4 qualification that is equivalent to the first year of a degree course. A HNC takes one year to complete full-time, or two years part-time. After completing a HNC, you can progress to a Higher National Diploma (HND).

Honours Degree (Hons) A Level 6 qualification. An honours degree is a distinguished type of undergraduate degree programme.

It requires extra modules/units to be studied, often in the form of a dissertation.

We currently offer a BSc (Hons) in Early Childhood Care, Health and Education, which provides learners with a full recognised degree. This course is delivered in partnership with Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT).

Assessment 100% Coursework. You will be assessed on four units in Year 1 and four in Year 2. Depending on the units of study some will be assessed at the end of each semester (17week period) and some will be long and thin and run throughout the two semesters.

Assessment is made up of practical work, sketchbooks, testing and academic writings. You will be required to submit a copy of the work online in a digital format to assist with internal and external marking.

Further Study On successful completion of the HNC students can progress to the Level 5 HND in Art and Design (Art Practice) at NWRC or can apply to a relevant degree programme at university with exceptions from Year 1 in some cases.

Course Overview This qualification is intended for candidates who want to develop Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) skills and theory as an integral part of their professional counselling work.

The qualification is designed to enhance the employability of counsellors in organisational settings and as independent practitioners, by giving them a solid grounding in CBT skills and theory.

CBT is one of the NICE recommended psychological therapies. Counsellors with CBT skills are often favoured above those without the CBT qualification, in multidisciplinary psychological therapy teams. This is particularly the case with Increasing Access to Psychological Therapy (IACP) teams.

The course includes group training supervision in addition to the candidate’s own supervision arrangements for their client work.

Course Overview This qualification is a new and innovative qualification that aims to provide learners currently working in a management or leadership role within health and social care with leadership and management training.

It will provide a wide range of options to enhance their leadership and management skills and knowledge within the health and social care sector. The Diploma explores the theories of leadership, addressing key policies, procedures and regulatory frameworks within the industry and how these are applied within the work setting. Learners will study a range of mandatory and optional units to tailor the qualification to suit their needs.

This qualification is a mandated Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) course and is compulsory for all managers and deputy managers within the sector.

The course teaching and learning is supported by one-to-one peripatetic assessment of 34 hours over the qualification for each student. This is to meet qualification competency requirements. This is a 90 credit qualification.

Course Overview This practice-based professional programme responds to evidenced public need in NI and was designed in consultation with industry partners, professional and academic bodies.

Core Modules

The course aims to develop students with the required attributes, skills and competencies to work effectively and ethically with adults who wish to avail of professional counselling. Work Placement Students who progress from the HNC programme to undertake a HND undertake a work placement in their second year, developing technical and employability skills.

Built Environment students work on a variety of major infrastructure projects for a range of employers including Consultant Civil & Structural Engineers, Architects, Contractors and private and public bodies.

Further Study Having successfully completed the HNC, students can enrol for a one year HND on dedicated pathways (which include Civil Engineering, Architecture and Surveying Quantity Surveying) subject to meeting prescribed Level 4 module requirements.

Course Overview This course is for senior practitioners in a leadership or management role who work within early years and childcare settings including day nurseries, crèches, playgroups and pre-school setting.

The course is also suitable for practitioners who have an opportunity to be appointed into leadership roles within the setting. It is flexible and delivered to meet the individual needs of the busy professional practitioner in partnership with their employer.

The employer provides a work based mentor and the College delivers knowledge based units and a work placement assessor who works with each individual apprentice to extend and build on their knowledge and competency at this level.

Building on your previous qualifications and experience, the course will allow you to enhance your skills in preparation for further studies at university level. Students of the course have been prize winners each year in the Northern Ireland Inter College Performing Arts Competitions.

The course is delivered in our exceptionally well resourced Foyle Building, complete with a 170 seat theatre, dressing rooms, stage craft and property workshops and costume store. Lighting and sound equipment are of the highest professional standard.

----Interview required. You will also be expected to complete a satisfactory audition as part of the assessment process.

Numerous public performances take place here, and all students get many opportunities to be on stage or in off-stage support roles. In the last few years our programme has included ambitious live theatre versions of films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Shaun of the Dead and The Big Lebowski.

Course Overview Life and Health Sciences has been recently identified as a growth area to be prioritised within NI due to its ‘world class capabilities’. This one-year Level 4 course therefore aims to develop knowledge and understanding of core themes alongside the key skills necessary for higher study in the Life sciences or employment in the Applied Sciences.
