2019 Youth Circus Season Support

Our Mission My Nose Turns Red (MNTR) is the only nonprofit organization in the Greater Cincinnati area dedicated to youth circus. Every year MNTR provides year-round training and performance opportunities for over 400 youth in the art of the one-ring circus and the theatrical clown. We believe that youth circus is a magical blend of theatre, movement, physical fitness, imagination and childlike wonder. Our instructors blend the ability to play with the precision of circus arts to create programs where youth learn teamwork and trust in a non-competitive environment. From beginners’ classes to advanced performance programs, MNTR provides a safe arena for young people to take risks and challenge themselves. Through the art of the theatrical clown and the one-ring circus, My Nose Turns Red cultivates a supportive environment that inspires youth to challenge themselves, develop essential life skills and engage audiences. History My Nose Turns Red was founded in 1984 when co-founders Jean St. John and Steve Roenker began touring as theatrical clowns Juice and Shootang, bringing their art form to thousands of children through school performances, workshops and residencies. In 1997, MNTR created a circus program designed to give youth the opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of circus training and performing.

MNTR provides a community of creative people with whom Tony feels free to try new styles or exchange creative thoughts. The co-founders often collaborate with specialty performers to teach skills such as trapeze and German Wheel. Tony has learned the responsibility of preparing his materials and supplies. He can adapt confidently to different venues and audiences. Most important to me is that he gives himself permission to fail, even in front of audiences, when he knows that he is pushing himself to master a new skill.

Participating with MNTR has proven to promote a work ethic and supplied the children with the valued experience of success.

My Nose Turns Red is a wonderful addition to our daughter’s life. She has developed physical strength, balance and poise, in addition to self-confidence, all while having fun. Never one for team sports, becoming a member of the MNTR youth circus allows her to work both individually and in groups, without the focus on “winning” and “competition.“

Annual Events Annual Circus Extravaganza April 2019 Students from all My Nose Turns Red programs across the region come together to take the stage to demonstrate their circus skills in the annual Youth Circus Extravaganza at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. The Youth Circus Extravaganza is the highlight of My Nose Turns Red’s circus season, bringing all students ages 7-18 together to perform on stage for audiences of over 700. The Extravaganza will feature the youth walking the tightwire, and balancing on rolling globes, rola bolas, and stilts. Expect to see some amazing diabolists (Chinese yoyos) and hoopers.

Advanced Circus Camp Show August 2019 Advanced members of My Nose Turns Red participate in a two week intensive summer camp where they learn from visiting coaches from around the country. A sort of master class for advanced students, the camp exposes them to skills, and techniques they won’t learn anywhere else. At the end of these two weeks they perform their newly learned skills on the german wheel, aerial silks, unicycles, and more for a crowd.

Circ-A-Thon December 2019 Circ-A-Thon features dozens of students from across the region working to reach the next level of achievement in their chosen circus arts. Whether it’s juggling 4 clubs instead of 3, self-mounting the unicycle, or walking across the tightwire without help, you’ll see student challenge themselves toward a self-determined goal which they will perform in front of over 150 parents and friends. The only thing more inspiring than the student effort on display is the support from other circus students as they cheer their friends on toward reading their goals.
