Pain

tatistics show that 1 in 3 high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship. An alarming 40% of teenage girls have reported that they know someone who has been in an abusive relationship or been beaten by their boyfriend. These statistics just show the reality that too many young girl are being abused by someone that they think “loves” them. These days, the words “I love you” get throw around carelessly just to please and manipulate people into doing things that they may not want to do. Most teens that are in abusive relationships may be in denial and might not even realize that they are in an unhealthy relationabuse is only when a guy abuses a girl but that is not 100% true. Guys can be abused as well. When people think of abusive relationships, they automatically think about physical abuse. While that is true, there are more components to an abusive relationship than just the physical aspect of it. An abusive relationship can be any or a combination of the following: Physical Abuse: abuse causing pain, injuries and other bodily harm Sexual Abuse: being forced or manipulated into engaging in sexual acts that you don’t want to do. Emotional and Mental Abuse: being humiliated publicly and/or privately, being told what you can from family and friends . Financial Abuse: being forced and intimidated into buying or not buying things. It can also include unwilling having all of your finances controlled by someone else. Cyber Abuse: being publicly humiliated, harassed, controlled, stalked, isolated and/or threatened online by your significant other. Verbal Abuse: a form of emotional abuse that involves being put down, degraded, threatened and humiliated by the use of profanity, name calling, disrespect, blaming and hurtful criticism.

my magazine | page 20

An abusive relationship can fall between just one or all of the categories above. Some people that are in abusive relationships are not even aware that they are in an unhealthy relationship. They may be blinded by “love” or so far in denial that they can’t even see the warning signs of abuse. If you have thoughts and are unsure about whether or not you are in an abusive relationship, take the quiz below.

Is This Love or Is This Pain? Does your partner… Act overly jealous or possessive of you Try to control what you wear Try to control who you talk to and hang with Hit, push, shove, slap, trip, bite, strangle, or inflict other types of bodily pain to you? Lose their temper very quickly Force you to perform and/or engage in sexual acts that you don’t want partake in Blame you for the way that they treat you Make it difficult for you to leave or break up with them Call you mean names, demean you and/or curse at you Control what you can or can’t buy Spend all of your money Abuse drugs and/or alcohol Constantly check your text messages, emails, and social networking sites Accuse you of cheating Get extremely angry if you don’t respond to a text or call in time Humiliate you online Make you feel afraid or intimidated Threaten to hurt you Say that you disobeyed them Text or call you obsessively Threaten to kill/hurt you or themselves if you leave them Do things that they would be angry about if you did Embarrass you in front of others Make you afraid to voice your opinion Constantly ask where you are, who you are with and what you are doing Destroy your belongings Blackmail you into staying with them or into doing things that they want Isolate you from your friends and family Get angry and jealous when someone of the opposite and/or same sex talks to you Make you feel insecure and self conscious

If you answered yes to at least one of the question, you may be in an abusive relationship. Recognizing the signs is the first step to getting out of the situation. Some partners will promise that they will never hurt or abuse you again but studies show that if they have done it once, they are more than likely to do it again. Most people don’t understand the seriousness of domestic violence. Most abusive relationships can result in emotional/mental damage, serious physical injury and even death. Someone who loves you wouldn’t hurt you or try to put to put you down. Love is not being mistreated. In order for you to love someone else, you have to first love yourself. Loving yourself means caring enough to not let someone control and abuse you. So if you are being abused, you need to get help immediately. Start by talking to a friend, parent, or counselor. Never think that you are alone, there is always someone that will care and is willing to help you leave the situation safely. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to people that you know, contact a confidential hotline and they will gladly assist you. No relationship is worth losing your life over so always remember, love is respect not pain.

My Love my magazine | page 28

1. Mylove, seeing that you are only 10 years old; at what age was you inspired to model and act? 18I was always told that I was a character. So I would have to say that I have been wanting to act every since I was a little girl. 2. What about Tyler Perry inspired you, to do what you do today? 18 Tyler Perry is my mentor. I love everything about him other than the fact that he was molested as a child. That was very painful for me to watch that side of him come out on Oprah. What is more frightening is that there are more people especially children out there that are going through the same thing that he experienced and I want to make a difference one person at a time. 3. What opportunties have been brought to you? Other than being a part of Brides Magazine, and an opportunity to perform in a commercial. 18 I recently did a VISA campaign. I was the lead singers on Bible colors which is a gospel DVD/CD for children. I am also the lead in a new movie that is coming out called The light in the closet. I will be speaking at an event at the white house in DC about children being my molested and how The Myluv Organization can help them. I have done an numerous amount of modeling for magazines. I also have my own clothing line called OMJ’s with my own theme song featuring Jabias the kid.

7. Can you tell My Magazine, who are some of the people you would like to meet and why? 18 Tyler Perry and David Mann because they are my mentors. I can recite and act out every line they ever did on TV. I would also like to meet Justin Beiber because I personally have a crush on him. 8. What places would you like to travel to and why? 18 I would like to travel to Africa because I think it is beautiful especially after watching coming to America. 9. Mylove, can you share with My Magazine, how does it feel to be living your dreams at such a young age of 10? 18 It feels great to be doing what I am doing at my age. My mother and father tells me all the time how blessed I am because many kids don't get this opportunity.

4. Being that you model and act do you still live a normal childhood‌like hanging with your friends? 18 My mother giggled at this question and probably because she wouldn't have it any other way. So yes, I do still have a normal life outside of my work. I know how to separate business from work. I still go outside and play with my friends. I still have sleepovers. My life is pretty normal to me. My mother tells me that I am a child first. 5. Who would you say have influenced you the most? And why? 18 Tyler Perry and David Mann. They are both silly just like me and they also work hard just like me. I would also have to say Al G Sillah. He is working with me on the movie that is coming up and he is also great! 6. When you're not working, what are some of your favorite things to do? 18 I love to write and swim.

but I did well.

10. Our readers would like to know where they can expect to see you in the next five years. 18 Just turn on your TV and I promise to be there! 11. Mylove, can you also share with us, some of your most memorable moments that you've had building your career as a model and actress? 18 I had to sing in front of a lot of people for a Celebrity benefit function for kids with autism. Just looking out seeing all the celebrities looking at me was so scary

12. Do you have any special thanks you would like to give out? 18 My mother says that I always have to thank God my personal savior first for blessing me with all my talents. I would also like to thank my mother and father (Demi Chanel and Cameron) for supporting me and making sure that I get to all appointments on time. I would like to thank them for believing in me and encouraging me to keep going. I would like to thank Al. G Sillah for all that he does for me and being a great partner to my mother. I would like to thank Tommy Ford from Martin for just taking me under his wings and watching over me out here in this industry. I would like to Thank Mr. Angelo for giving me the opportunity for my new film. And my G-pop (Grandfather) David for all his prayers and telling me all the time that I am beautiful. I would also like to thank you for the opportunity to do this article with you all today. summer 2012 | page 29
