For What It’s Worth n case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of frustrated people walking around, disappointed, miserable people who are being gassed by the negativity that has permeated our planet. For those of us who are optimistically inclined, it has become a struggle even for us, to look on the bright side. We walk around trying to find what was lost, our happiness, our dreams, our like-minded friends. Instead, we find political divide, aggression, fear, worry, and the stampede of racism, terrorism, and inequality that keeps us dodging shards of pessimism that sticks like glue to anyone in its way. Those of us, the strong ones, keep on fighting, keep on believing that the state of the world is only temporary, that we can beat this venom, but those who are weak, have succumbed to hopelessness. We are all weary. We are all worried. We are more suspicious,

less friendly, more irritable, and less willing to help our friends and neighbors, not because we don’t care, but because we only have so much left in reserve. These are hard times, unpredictable times that we are not prepared for, pummeled from every direction by problems with money, relationships, hardships and illness. The days of lighthearted banter and endless dinner parties have given way to every person for themselves, guarding their children, their pocketbooks and their safety. I understand. I wish I knew the answers, and if I find them, I promise I will let you know. But for now, all I can suggest is that we turn off the endless streaming of newscasts that bring horrific images into our homes, that we shelter our children from the evilness of some individuals, and reinforce to them our values, instilled in us from
better times, from earlier days, from those who wanted something better for their lives. It is the reason our country became great, and the reason we have to remain great. We can’t do it alone, but if we all ban together, if we all join forces, if we see what we can achieve when we are not divided, then we can also believe there is hope, because without hope, what do we have?

it for yourselves, for your friends, and your neighbors. Most of all, do it for your children. They deserve better
