BLOOM

Miyake’s creative process has been based upon the concept of “one piece of cloth.” It explores the fundamental relationship between the body, the cloth that covers it, and the space that is created between these elements. The project embodies Miyake’s ideals as it too is composed of one single entity, continuously wrapping and folding to create a unique space. Interrupting the fold is a responsive skin is found, whose design is also inspired by the world-renowned fashion designer. Much like the designers ideas, the structure along with its skin makes a continuous fold taking the pre-existing columns as its body. It was important to leave the existing columns in place, therefore as a design strategy I chose not to shy away from them but rather use them as an opportunity to further the design, making them one and the same. Its multipurpose skin reacts to sunlight, itcan be mechanically maneuvered to open and close depending on the direction of the sun, while also casting interesting shadows. While environmentally responsive, the skin similarly reacts to the respective program within, constantly interacting with the space it benefits. Adaptably, it can also perform every day uses such as forming a desk, clothing racks, shelves, all while framing the surrounding views, encompassing the space, and providing shade. The compliant skin becomes the elegant move that ties all three units together

EXPERIENCING THE EDGE

The Wynwood art district is one of the latest remarkable urban redevelopment areas in Miami. Over the past 15 years it has transformed into a vibrant hub with galleries, artists spaces, restaurants, shops and cafes. One to two story warehouses with graffiti walls used to define the neighborhood and over time became viable open spaces for art alleries and artists studios.

Our project reflects on the contemporary Wynwood experience of walking around the famous blocks of graffiti. From our observations, we found that the true essence of Wynwood is found in the experience of walking through the edge, an idea from which we expanded, and used to create our public spaces. Our desire is to create a place that allows people to have a genuine and accessible urban city experience by creating outdoor and mixed use spaces that invite a number of activities to take place, therefore preserving the current bohemian atmosphere of Wynwood. One place where different types of people can live, work, eat and play.

LINEAR PATH

LINEAR PATH PLANT FILLED PLANTERS Located on he South Facade are planters, mainly because it is the facade that recieves the most light. The planters serve as a buffer facade, cooling the atomsphere by severa degrees and not allowing heat and light to enter directly into the building

PERFORATED METAL BALCONIES Located on the south facade are perforated metal balconies. This light and perforated material allows the air to flow through and circulate, providing shading for the floor below.

LINEAR PATH LOW-E DOUBLE GLAZED GLASS Glass used in double glazing window for thermal insulation is known as Low E, or low-emissivity glass. The dual action coating reflects heat back into the room, whilst allowing heat and light from the sun (known as passive solar heat gain) to pass through. Thermal insultion glass should be used on face 2 or 3 of a double glazing unit

HVAC AND HOLLOW SLABS Heat exchange and ventilation system integrated with a hollow core concrete floor . `

PERFORATED SLIDING STEEL SHUTTERS Located on the East & West Facades, these perforated sliding steel shutters provide shade, acting as a louver blocking the sun as it makes its tragectory
