A Letter From The Board

Dear Friends,

It is with great pride that we share our 2008 Annual Report highlighting the work of the Somerset Hills YMCA. With the recent economic downturn, it is important now more than ever for us to remain adaptable, financially viable and focused on our mission of serving the community’s needs.

Value

Security

During 2008, from a strategic planning perspective, the YMCA’s Board of Directors evaluated the progress and achievements made over the previous five years, engaging in a comprehensive process that scanned both our external and internal environments. The outcome of this highly interactive exercise is a new strategic plan that will provide a roadmap and compass for the next five years.

The Somerset Hills YMCA is committed to the highest ethical standard as a 501(c)(3) public charity and we strive to be an asset in our community. We must always challenge ourselves and demonstrate to our stakeholders, in measurable means, how the community benefits from our work.

Investment

While hundreds of stories illustrate how we are making a difference in people’s lives, this report will give you a glimpse of the more measureable ones achieved this past year.

Worth

Since our mission is to welcome all individuals regardless of economic circumstances, we provided more than $620,000 in financial assistance and program subsidies through our Strong Kids Campaign, an increase of almost 10% over 2007, thanks to the generosity and support of our members and friends. Membership and our program offerings increased while volunteerism peaked, developing positive values for our children, building stronger family bonds and encouraging community engagement through collaboration. We truly appreciate everyone who believes that our community is a better place because it has a YMCA and who demonstrates that belief through their active participation as a member, volunteer, donor, advocate, staff or friend for, without your support, the good work of the Somerset Hills YMCA would not be possible.

Asset Sincerely,

Robert Raymar, Chairman of the Board

Robert J. Lomauro, President & CEO

The Somerset Hills YMCA Invested in Our Vision of “Serving Many Needs, Creating One Community”

Investm

It seems difficult to imagine our community without the Somerset Hills YMCA. Witness the groups of friends meeting each day to work out or swim together, the tiny feet scurrying impatiently toward daycare or a dance class, the sound of laughter filling the busy corridors, and one realizes just how important the Somerset Hills YMCA is to the people of our community. Our members seem to understand that, while the world can sometimes appear unpredictable, the Y is here to stay, constantly seeking ways to help people live their lives to the fullest. As evidence, let’s take a look at our winning portfolio of investments in 2008.

THE VALUE OF OUR MEMBERS Putting Our Members First, Each and Every Day

• Membership at the Somerset Hills YMCA continued to grow nearly 10% to a total of approximately 22,000 members, with membership retention at 74%, well above the national YMCA average.

• With 65 full time staff members and more than 500 part-time and seasonal employees, members enjoy excellent service in areas such as child care, individualized training, support services, special needs programming and financial assistance.

• The Somerset Hills YMCA offers more than 300 programs, several of which are new and unique in our community. Women on the Run helped more than 60 women start a running program and train for their first 5K race in 2008. The women’s triathlon club grew six times over the previous year, with many members completing their first triathlon and realizing a goal they never thought possible.

• New free programs and events were introduced, including weekly Family Nights where families enjoy swimming, games, and dinner together – in other words, good quality time.

• The Somerset Hills YMCA was the proud and first non-profit recipient of the Somerset County Business Partnership award for economic vitality in the small to medium business category, being recognized for “...doing great things for the county and providing affordable things for families to do.”

• Programming for active older adults continued to grow at both the Mount Airy and Riverwalk facilities, with nearly 450 individuals participating in arthritis aquatics programs, successful aging lectures, fitness and social activities.

• Attendance at weekly Career Forum meetings increased with networking, job search and speakers’ programs offering support and guidance for those in job transition.

• In October, Bob Lomauro, President & CEO of the Somerset Hills YMCA, was honored with Community Hope’s Community Partner Award to acknowledge the nearly $120,000 that the YMCA has helped raise over the past 5 years through our annual Flag Day 5K Run to benefit the Hope For Veterans Transitional Housing Program.

• We raised $317,949 through the Strong Kids Campaign and other sources, which helped us provide more than $620,000 in financial assistance and program subsidies for individuals and families who need it most. Campaign co-chairs Mark Irwin and Paul Boudreau, chair of the Golf Classic, Greg Toombs, and 75 volunteers were a strong driving force behind this success.

• Programs were introduced at the new Bedminster/Far Hills facility in 2008, primarily focused on yoga and youth arts such as Improv Workshops, Youth Science and Cooking classes. Plans to hold an open house for middle school students every Friday after school were put into motion and will be realized in early 2009.

When Donna and Bob Dillon brought their 7 year old son Liam, who has some special needs, to a Tae Kwon Do class at the Somerset Hills YMCA, they were unsure that they were making the right decision. Organized sport wasn’t for Liam and other Tae Kwon Do classes in the area had been unable to accommodate him because of the potential disruption he might cause others in the class.

Value

Security

However, having been members of the Y since 2000, they had experienced the nurturing and encouraging environment that their daughter had enjoyed in summer camps, and so took a deep breath and brought Liam to a class for kids, adults and families. Reassured by the warm welcome they received, Bob and Liam started a class together. Bob shares his story; “In our first few classes I would pull the instructor aside and try to explain that my son has some special needs and that I will try to not have him distract the other students. He would tell me not to worry and, the fact is, he really meant it as they welcome everyone, regardless of the extra work involved or the time it might take.” Donna describes the class like a support group, all of whom, young and old, have taken on the role of surrogate parent. “It brought tears of joy to my eyes to watch this shared responsibility of our son, Liam, being taken on.”

Investment

Worth

Since then, both of Liam’s parents have taken classes at the Y and have found a real sense of belonging here at the Somerset Hills YMCA, surrounded by a caring and supportive expanded family that they couldn’t find anywhere else. Liam continues to thrive and has earned two promotions to a green belt. “Liam can’t wait to get to the Y each week to see all his friends; it’s like a home away from home for us all,” says Donna.

Amy’s Heart and Soul Reward

Investm

Amy Margaret-MacDonald, Exercise Testing Coordinator and a member of the Y-Arts Department at the Somerset Hills YMCA, began her long and happy relationship with the Y at the age of 17, as a Counselor In Training. Over the years, Amy has poured her heart and soul into everything she does at the Y, making lasting friendships with members and staff, volunteering her time and caring for others.

Value

Security

One day back in 2007, Amy realized she had an important task to accomplish after chatting at the Y with Melissa, a bright, articulate young woman who had never allowed the fact that she was born with Down syndrome prevent her from accomplishing her dreams, dreams too ambitious even for others. Melissa confided to Amy that she felt lonely, as social opportunities for meeting new friends, pursuing hobbies and having fun were scarce in the post-school setting. Amy then knew that she had an opportunity to make a difference in Melissa’s life and the lives of others.

Investment

So Amy established S.N.A.P., Special Needs Adult Program, a social group designed to bring together young adults with special needs, aged 15 and over. Using the Somerset Hills YMCA as the venue, their first get together was a Valentine’s Day dance where 20 participants danced, and enjoyed refreshments and camaraderie. Since then, their social calendar has involved a trip to the circus, movies, a barbeque, and a Flag Day 5K run where Melissa, who sadly passed away in March 2008 after a courageous battle with leukemia, was honored.

Worth

As the number of young adults attending S.N.A.P. grows, Amy’s commitment to serving this group of friends strengthens because she has witnessed the good effect it has on the participants. “To see the smiles and hear the laughter makes the time commitment very worthwhile,” says Amy. “Working at the Y gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. The people here are like a very large second family to me! I couldn’t imagine my life without them.”
