“...create a unique texture and add a level of interest in the drawing.”

BLUE LINES

First, for the texture drawings, I picked a color such as green then I began to write on the canvas using the Bamboo tablet and pen, the number three with a size 20 font. Then I gradually took up the whole canvas with these markings. After the page was relatively filled, I went lighter with the shade of green and smaller with the brush stroke. Once the page was covered with all these different shades, I picked an opposite color so that it may stand out. I chose a dark orange. I began to draw the shape of the bottle with a 3-point stroke. Similar to the background, I began a dark to light effect. I wanted the viewer to first see the object such as the bottle. I achieved this by making the bottle apparent and hard to see past to the background. The next thing I wanted the audience to see is the background. The back

ground is bright and vivid and after the viewers eye sees the object that they know they will go to color. The purpose of creating the texture drawings is to create a significant change in the style of creating art. It was also to create a unique texture and add a level of interest in the drawing. The reason for creating the color drawings is to explore how color can affect the gradient effect. And to attempt to copy the value of black to white using blues to white or green to white.

I wanted to try and see how color can affect the gradient effect of light to dark. In this case I feel like the color did because the white pops out so well and you can clearly see how it just hits those particular spots.

BLUE WINE “...I began a light to dark effect on the bottle.”


I never tried to draw on a Bamboo tablet and doing it was way hard. The way that I did it I tried to still get the darks and lights while still trying to make it look like a bottle. Not drawing the outline first is extremely hard to do so I can stay in the same area.

VARIATIONS

First I took the original shape drawing and clicked on the blend tool. Once all the layers were unlocked, I began to click on the various layers that made up the different sections of the face such as the cheek to blend them into one harmonious layer. If the colors became to bright I would undo the blend tool and edit the color using the color swatches. I wanted the audience to ďŹ rst see the subjects. I achieved this by making the lines only outline the subjects and not the background, so they can stand out from the background. The next thing I wanted the viewers to see was the background and this was achieved by making the background stay the same.

This was created to serve as an experimentation to explore color and the variations that can come from these different themes of color. It was also to explore the lines that can either distort the image or even enhance the experience of the viewer. It adds a level of interest to the image that cannot be achieved with the regular image.

“...to draw a challenging object in a small time.”

PENCIL SHARPENER First I took white paper and a Graphite pencil. Then I began by holding the object in my hand, which was the pencil sharpener. I began to draw the object with the pencil. After I was done drawing the initial shape of the sharpener, I used the same pencil to shade the object. I first wanted the viewer to see that it is an old style pencil sharpener. Then I wanted the audience to pay attention to the detail and the shading. I achieved these certain objectives by paying close attention to make sure it looked like the object without question.

The purpose of creating the object was to explore drawing what I see and conveying it closely on the paper. The other purpose was to be able to draw a challenging object in a small amount of time. This was indeed challenging because I only had a little under 13 minutes to do it.

“...be able to control the size of the chairs.�

CHAIR STUDIES First the chair at the top was placed on the table in front of me. Then I took a large sheet of paper and a graphite pencil. After I was set up, I began to draw the initial shape of the chair from the angle given. After the shape was done, I used the pencil to began to shade the rocking chair. I repeated this process for the other three chairs. I wanted the viewer to actually see the metal heart chair in the bottom left corner. I achieved this by allowing its size to be determined by how big I was comfortable doing it which let it become the biggest one on the paper. The next one I wanted the viewer to see was the one right above it. This was accomplished by its abstraction from the others. It has a modern look which sets it apart. The third object to be seen is the stool, which was created by its size and the fact it is situated next to the metal heart chair. The last one to be seen is the rocking chair at the very top, which is the smallest.

The purpose of creating these chairs was to explore the ability to copy exactly what I see onto the paper. The other objective was to be able to control size and be able to ďŹ t all of these chairs onto this one page. Controlling size along with being able to draw what I see is an invaluable skill.

“...try to create depth in the piece.” TRICYCLE

First I took regular white paper and used charcoal to tone the paper. I used a paper towel to smooth over the charcoal to get even darkness. I began to draw the tricycle with the charcoal. Once, the tricycles’ shape was done I used the the white conte crayon and the kneaded eraser to began making the light areas show. I think used the blending stick to smooth out the bike. I also used the black conte crayon to make the darker areas. I used the charcoal to also color the shadow as well as the background. The first thing I wanted the viewer to see was the bike. I achieved this by using most of the space to draw it. Then I wanted the viewer to notice the light areas and I achieved this by making them blend but at the same time pop out. The last thing I wanted the viewer to notice is the shadow that is casted on the bike and the table.

The purpose of creating this piece was to explore size control as well as being able to draw what I see. The tricycle was meant to be a challenge because of the view with the front tire. This was help me develop how to create depth in the piece and show that the tire is protruding out of the page.

“...used to explore the dark and the light.”

BEAUTY First I took a regular white sheet of paper then I toned with charcoal to create a dark sheet. Then I took a piece of charcoal to create the intial shape and then I shaded the objects that needed a darker shade. Then I used the kneaded eraser to make the light areas known.

The purpose of this piece is to explore size. This was also used to explore the dark and the light and make the most accurate depiction of where the light shown and where the dark was evident.

I first wanted the viewer to see the general shapes and identify the the light and dark areas of the work. Then I wanted the viewer to see the objects such as the wig head and the vase. I achieved this by making the objects as realistic as possible while still achieving what I wanted.

“...the technique of cutting off the objects.” CHARCOAL BOTTLES First I toned the paper with charcoal and then I used a paper towel to smooth out the charcoal to make a smooth surface. Then I used the charcoal to draw the shapes. After the shapes were drawn I used the charcoal to shade as well as the white conte crayon. Once the conte crayon was where I wanted then I used the blended tool to blend the white to seem natural. Then I used the charcoal to color the table and the background.

The purpose of creating this piece was to perfect using the charcoal and the conte crayon. The objective of this piece was to learn how to control the technique of cutting off the objects and that was achieved with the vase being cut off.

I first wanted the viewer to see the teapot. I achieved this by making the teapot the most detailed. Then I wanted the audience to see the milk bottle. This was achieved by making this the lightest object in the piece and the tallest. Also because it was placed in the middle of the piece. The last thing I wanted the viewer to see was the vase on the far left. This was possible because it was cut off from the piece which showed it was not the most important.

“....draw exactly what I see and convey it...�

First I took white paper then using the graphite pencil, I began to outline the horse statue which was placed in front of me. Then after the outline was drawn I began to draw the detail of the horse. After the detail was drawn I began to shade where the dark was.

HORSE

The purpose of creating this piece is to control size and have accurate shapes. The challenge is to size it down as well as keeping it even with the size like the head and legs. The other purpose was to draw exactly what you see and convey it on the paper in the best way possible.

I ďŹ rst wanted the audience to see the clothing on the horse and then the decorations on the rear. I achieved this by giving special attention to the details and the shading. Then I wanted the viewer to see the horse in general and its expression.

“...use the conte crayon and the charcoal correctly.”

FULL VIEW First I took a white sheet and toned it with charcoal and used paper towels to smooth it out. Then I took the charcoal to draw out the shapes of the objects. After the objects were drawn I began to do detail using the charcoal for dark and the white conte crayon for light. Then I used the blend tool to make the dark and light look harmonious. I first wanted the viewer to see the milk bottle. I achieved this by making the milk bottle the lightest and in the middle of the composition. Then I wanted the viewer to see the vase which is on the left and this was accomplished by the fact that it is the second lightest object. The last thing to be seen is the teapot which has light but is the shortest.

The purpose of creating this piece was to attempt to fit all objects into the paper. Then to also use the conte crayon and the charcoal correctly. The other was to achieve a clear depiction of where the light and dark are present in the composition.

“...just drawing the shapes rather than drawing the object as itself.�

Bar Stool First, I took a piece of newspaper textured drawing sheet. Then using the charcoal, I began to draw the negative spaces instead of actually drawing the stool. Once the general shape of the stool was produced I connected the lines inside of the stool. After the stool was done, I began to shade the light and the dark of the stool. Then I colored the backgrouns closest to the stool. I wanted the viewer to ďŹ rst see the stool for a stool. I achieved this by making it look as much like a stool as possible. Then I wanted the viewer to see the background. This was possible because of the dark shading that is there. Then I wnated the viewer to see the shading done on the stool which gives it a level of depth.

The purpose of making this drawing was to explore size control in a drawing. Also to master just drawing the shapes rather than drawing the object as itself. This in itself was a challenge because I am so used to drawing the object as itself rather than the negative spaces to make the object appear.

“...explore drawing older individuals with not much detail.”

AGE

First I took a brown textured sheet of paper. Then using a graphite stick, I began to draw the woman starting with the head. Then I used a green colored pastel stick to color the shirt. Then using paper towels I brushed the graphite onto the areas with no graphite for shading. I first wanted the viewer to notice the white eyes of the woman. I made this possible by using the white pastel to color them to opposite the otherwise dark paper. The next thing I wanted the viewer to see is the green of the shirt. This was possible because it is a different color from the paper.

The purpose of making this piece was to explore drawing older individuals with not much detail. I also made this piece in high school so I was still exploring faces. This was meant to also explore using graphite sticks because this is one of my first ones.

“I really enjoy drawing people with marker.�

Portrait Sketches First I took a small sketchbook and a thin black Sharpie marker. Then I took a photo of the individual. I began drawing with the right eyebrow with all of these drawings. Then I went to the eye underneath then I followed with the nose then the other eye which continued on to the mouth. After the general face was complete I did the hair then the shirt. Then I began to shade with the marker on the faces then the necks.

I did these pieces to practice using marker as if it were pencil to draw a person. I wanted to do these pieces one time without messing up in my opinion which I feel I achieved. I feel like I achieved my goal which was to do these pieces in all marker as if I were sketching. I genuinely enjoy drawing people with marker because it is bold.

I ďŹ rst want the viewer to see the eyes then the cheeks. I achieved this by making those areas the most prominent. Then I wanted the viewer to see the hair of the individual. I made this happen by paying special attention to the shading and the detail. I lastly wanted the viewer to look at the picture as a whole and see the individual.

“...wanted to see if I can try to continue the zebra without arrows...�

First I took a white sheet of paper. Then using several Sharpie markers, I began to draw the zebra and its stripes. I colored in the stripes with various colors of Sharpie markers. Then I used the purple marker to color the entire background.

RELAXED

The purpose of creating this piece was to see if I can try and continue the zebra collection I did last time. I tried to achieve a totally new take on the zebra without the arrows but with the various bold colors.

I ďŹ rst wanted the viewer to see the zebra as a whole and I achieved this by having the zebra take up the whole page. Then I wanted the viewer to see the various colors of the stripes and this was possible because the colors are bold and take up most of the zebra. Then I wanted the viewer to see the background.

“...this was meant to be a test for new colors.�

HIGHER First I took Sharpie markers that were dark blue, a dark tealish color, teal and yellow. Then I drew a series of arrows that were dark blue on the bottom of the page. Then I took the dark tealish color marker and then drew arrows going in the same direction. Then I did the same with the teal and the yellow markers.

I created this piece over Winter Break. This piece was meant to be a test of the colors that I just bought. Then it turned into an actual piece that I am willing to keep. This piece became one of those pieces that I eventually began using for powerpoints and other things.

I ďŹ rst wanted the viewer to see the dark arrows and this was accomplished because they are the darker and bolder colors on the piece. Then I wanted the audience to follow where the arrows were going to see that they lead to the yellow which is the last thing I wanted the viewer to see.

PARROT First I took the yellow, green, dark green, teal, blue, dark blue, black, orange, red, maroon and brown Sharpie markers. Then I drew an outline with pencil of the parrot. After the outline was complete, I drew the general markers of the piece such as the eye with pencil. After the general parrot was complete I began to color the parrot starting the green on the cheek then the yellow and this followed through with nearly half of the bird. After that was done I took the blues and did the beak along with the yellow and the eyes. Then I colored the background completely doing a pattern like a triangle. First I wanted the viewer to see the yellow which is mainly the body of the parrot. Then I wanted the viewer to see the beak which I achieved by

leaving the white open which is not anywhere else on the page. Then I wanted the viewer to see the eye area by having the blue as if it were a line and directing you to it. This piece was done over Winter Break. I wanted to experiment with markers and see how far can I go with using them as if they were colored pencils. I also never drew a bird before so it would be an extremely different thing for me so I was generally excited to attempt it.

“...wanted to practice charcoal pencils and painting.”

First I took watercolor paint, charcoal and a graphite pencil. Then I drew out the woman in pencil. Then I used the charcoal to do shading on her hair and her clothes. Then I used the black watercolor paint to wrap around the subject. Then using the orange watercolor, I painted the entire background.

PEACE

I did this piece in high school. It was meant as a test for watercolor in my new sketchbook at the time. Then it turned from a test to a piece that I enjoy. I wanted to practice charcoal pencils and painting.

I first wanted the audience to see the bright orange background. I achieved this by it being the only color in the piece and the brightest. Then I wanted the viewer to focus on the subject which is the woman. I achieved this by having her be the only thing with white and the black helps her stick out and be the second or even the first thing seen.

SIMPLY EVERYTHING
