MY FLASH TRASH RELAUNCHES IT’S WEBSITE JUNE 2012

I had decided it was incredibly obvious. Only it wasn’t. Why do people shop online? And how do you want to shop online? I whipped out a note pad and wrote down my thoughts..

Shopper C) Uses conversation with friends and referrals in real life from their social group and online through key influencers, to decide where to buy.

Shopper A) knows exactly what they want, sub-concious triggers direct their desires.

It was with these 3 shoppers that I had in mind when designing the update for MYFLASHTRASH.COM and with Version 2.0 going live this June, I hope you’ll agree its now easier than ever to find the jewellery you love!

Shopper B) looks for inspiration from the present, past and future, using Tumblr, Street Style Blogs, Magazines, Svplly.com and Pinterest to form desires and spend.

Mapping the entertainment content around the shopping experience was key.

SINGER CHARLOTTE RENÉ

FUSCHIA NAVAJO BANGLE ANABEL CAMPBELL £155

What got you into singing and which artist’s inspire you?

Where can we expect to see you performing next?

Ever since I learnt to hold a note I woke up singing and went to bed singing; my neighbours can vouch for that! I grew up listening to the greats such as Elvis Presley, Celine Dion, Edith Piaf, Etta James and

I’ll be headlining Breakin Out Festival in Wales, alongside Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk this September.

Lauryn Hill; they all inspired me to sing.

What makes you and your music unique? Being of Creole origin and coming from a very mixed background contributes to the diverse range of music I listen to. These influences combined contribute to this very eclectic sound I like to think I have.

Who is your A-List style crush? Kate Moss, I love how she brings an edge to even the most sophisticated of gowns and how she doesn’t restrict herself to one look; one minute she’s rocky/chic the next she’s punk/ glam.

What is you’re my flash trash must have item? The Navajo bangle by Anabel Campbell

which comes in different colours so you can stack them together for a fun yet chic look.

What’s your favourite jewellery for summer? I tend not to wear a lot of jewellery at one time; I much prefer to wear one or two statement pieces that are bold and eyecatching. I love over-sized earrings, the more vintage the better in my opinion. I also recently fell in love with friendship bracelets again, particularly the My Flash Trash ones!

LESTIE LEE INTERVIEW Lestie, tell us a bit about yourself, your background and what you are currently working on… I am originally from Hong Kong but came England to study jewellery design. I studied gemology at the GIA.

What sparked your interest in the jewellery industry? I first studied an Art and Design Foundation course and wanted to get into the fashion industry. After doing a lot of trials with different fashion designers I chose to pursue jewellery as a career. The gemology course made me become fascinated with stones and gems, which is why my very first jewellery collection is focused on the cutting of the stones.

How long have you been designing jewellery? I started designing back in 2004 and I graduated in 2007. After that I worked with different designers before launching my own collection.

Which other jewellery designers do you admire? I worked with the high-end jewellery brand Adler, which focuses on coloured gemstones. I really admire diamonds and more luxurious designers.

What has been the biggest success of your career so far?

Which is your favorite type of jewellery to design?

Launching my own brand was a big step for me, before I always worked with somebody else’s brand and did what they liked. Having my own brand gave me the freedom and more creativity to do what I like. It was hard at first but now I feel it has been a great success.

I love to design rings and earrings the most. I wear earrings everyday as they are easy to wear and don’t have to match your outfit too much. I like rings because they can be worn as statement pieces. I find necklaces are harder to wear and design.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of jewellery? I love to travel. I travel a lot throughout the year, my family is from Hong Kong and my twin sister lives there so I like to go there often. I also travel a lot within Europe. My favorite cities are Barcelona and Copenhagen. They are very design orientated cities with great focus on fashion, and architecture.

Where did the inspiration for your collection come from? The collection is based on the formation of the gemstones and the cutting of different shaped stones. I had to look at stones for 10 hours every day which helped to develop my interest! We looked at 20 stones a day; their appearance, grading and cut etc. I even considered becoming a stone grader because I enjoyed it so much.

What materials do you most enjoy working with? I like to work with silver, but I want to work with gold and platinum more in the future.

THE ONLINE JEWELLERY BOUTIQUE

8

And what can we expect next from you? I am going to be at Treasure during London Jewellery Week and I am also going to be launching a new collection in September.

Finally, what advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career as a jewellery designer? The most important thing is to do the stuff you love and to keep things interesting. Don’t ever stop working and trying out new ideas. Keep doing what you like and that will help you to succeed.

...Last week I was invited to ‘Bake with Maria’. Maria teaches classes on how to make everything from bread, to pastries to pretzels and tarts. I joined in on the ‘Tasty Tarts’ class, which was a 3 hour evening class from 6-9pm based around Swiss cottage/St Johns wood area in London. Let me say, I am not a baker, would love to be, but I am not so I didn’t really know what to expect. Not only is Maria’s kitchen so beautiful and cosy, her classes are quite small which is a lot more intimate, hands on and you actually get to learn. I will definitely have to attend other class (the Pretzel one looks like so much fun!) On to my class, me and Tamara were joined with three other students. We all had our own chair and space on the large baking table. We learnt how to make everything from the dough to the crust to the fillings as well as the presentation of the tarts...

...It’s sweater season and I’m way more excited about this than can be considered normal. I’ve never been a complicated dresser and if I could choose, this would be the kind of outfit I wear every day of autumn. While functional, the weird pattern of the sweater and the ever so slightly indecent nature of the slip makes it more me. For the last few days I’ve been on a frantic knitwear search while stocking my winter wardrobe and I’ve fallen in love with this one by Alexander Wang...

I always take this leopard bag with me when I travel. It is the perfect hand luggage come shopping bag size, plus its super cute. This weekend in London was beautiful, so I spent it outdoors BBQing and hanging out with friends. I hope wherever you are reading this, you had a wonderful weekend too... 15

STYLIST AGONY AUNT Dear Flash Trash Girl,

I’m going to my friends wedding this summer and I want to stand out. I don’t have my ears pierced, what other jewellery can I wear? Rachel, 23, Lincoln Hi Rachel, depending on your dress style and colour I think for a summer wedding gold accessorizes are perfect. Catherine Zoraida creates gorgeous pieces all in gold, very dainty but stand out. I would suggest getting the Seahorse pendant which you can customize and get the Seahorse’s eye in a colour of your choice which could compliment your dress.

FLASH TRASH GIRL ANSWERS ALL YOUR STYLE & FASHION QUESTIONS

Hi Kitty, festival accessories are so important. I would definitely suggest buying a Culietta headpiece to stand out from the crowd. If you really want to be unique I would suggest buying an ear cuff from the Typhoon Palace collection. For cheap chic jewellery I would recommend Estella Bartlett friendship bracelets whcih start from £10 and look great stacked together.

Zoe, 18, Cambridge Hi Zoe, I get a lot of questions like this and find it easier to answer every time as more and more of jewellery is becoming unisex. We have a fabulous brand called Love Bullets that would suit your friend’s style perfectly.
