Who is Allah ? As-Samee’ The All-Hearing, The Ever Listening

And struggle in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah is HEARING and KNOWING of all that you do {Surah 2, Verse 244} He  is aware of everything that happens in this universe and HEARS everything. He  is the only One that pays attention to all your thoughts and is able to listen to them before you speak them. He  can hear and understand all the different languages of all his creation, from human beings to animals and more. If the whole universe had to speak at once, know that Allah  would hear them and listen to each voice and that it is not hard for Him at all! HOW TO LIVE BY THIS GREAT NAME? Sometimes we have bad thoughts or end up saying bad things to our parents, friends and others. We have to be careful because any time you say or speak a word, Allah  has heard it. Sometimes we even lie and get away with things, but Allah  has heard you lie and you cannot take it back unless you ask for forgiveness ( ) from both the person and Allah . If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.

Question: What if you had a million dollars in your bank account, what would you do? Let’s say tomorrow you wake up and Allah  blessed you with 1 million dollars, what would you do with it? Write down all the things that comes to your mind. Ask Your Parents for some ideas and see if you can come up with great answers! If I had a million dollars tomorrow, some things I would do are…

It’s a New Year!

Did you know that Muslims have their own new year? The Islamic calendar is slightly different than the calendar we follow in Canada or USA but it also has its own 12 month cycle. The Islamic calendar follows the moon and after 29-30 days, just like in Ramadan, there is always a New moon. Muslims start a new month every time they see a new moon.

), is celebrated by Muslims on the first The Islamic New Year, Al-Hijra ( day of the first month in the Islamic Calendar called Muharram ( ). The exact day changes every year because the Islamic lunar year is 11 to 12 days shorter than the Solar (Western) year. In our Islamic calendar, we are going to be starting the new year of 1438 on October 2nd or 3rd, 2016.

The New Year for Muslims can start in the middle of winter or in the middle of summer. The exact date of the next Al-Hijra is not yet known, it is only known once we see the new moon.

Differences between the Normal Calendar and Islamic Calendar

Follows the Sun This year is 2016 12 months in a year 30-31 days in a month

Follows the New Moon This year is 1438 12 months in a year 29-30 days in a month 354 days in a year

(except for February)

The moon cycle is the same all over the world and just like how we use it to know when Ramadan (‫ )رمضان‬starts, we also use it to know the beginning of every other Islamic Month.

How the cycle works:

The Messenger of Allah  directed us to observe Saum (fasting) on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the (lunar) month as was narrated by Abu Dharr who said: The Messenger of Allah commanded us to fast three days (white days), of thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth. {Sunan An-Nisa’i} This means that every time there is a full moon, Muslims should try fasting the next day.

Hadith of the Month The Prophet  said, He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah  {Sunan Abi-Dawud}

WHAT IS THANKFULNESS? Being thankful is when you understand what Allah  has given you. You have to have a sense of humility towards Him for all the blessings he has given you. Being thankful plays a very important part in our faith. Try not to fall into the two categories below:

1) Those who think that it was because of them and their actions that they are blessed in this life. This is completely wrong, as it is ONLY because of Allah  that you have all the good things in life.

2) Other people forget how much blessings they truly have and are not thankful for their current condition. This is also wrong because if you look at other people around the world, you will soon realize how truly blessed you are. Always thank Allah  for all that he has given you, by saying Alhmadulillah as many times as possible.

EXPLANATION: The hadith says that “He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah ” What does this mean? Being thankful to Allah  goes hand in hand with being thankful to people. If you are not thankful for your parents or if you are not thankful to others who you see help you regularly, then how can you be thankful to your Creator whom you have never seen? Thank people for whatever they do for you, and thank Allah for whatever you have. Make this a habit so that Allah  will increase you in so many ways. Allah  says in the Quran: If you are grateful, I shall certainly increase you (in favour) {Surah 14, Verse 4}

QUESTIONS: 1) Name a few things that you are thankful to Allah  for: a) _ b) _ c) _ 2) Name a few people that you are thankful for? a) _ b) _ c) _ The best way to show that you are thankful to someone is by saying “thank you” and making dua for them in private.

Game On! Instructions: 1) Colour in the months below then cut them out 2) Fold each month small then put them in a jar or container

Rules: 1) Take turns with a parent, sibling or friend and pull out a paper 2) Whatever month you pull out, you have to say the month that comes before and after ž Keep score if you like ž If you get both of the months correct, then you get 2 points ž If you only get one month correct, then you get 1 point ž If you get no months correct, then you get 0 points 4) Keep playing until you’ve finished all the months
