Discoveries and Inventions

Letter to the Parents:

Contains Qur'anic Verses Please Dispose of it Properly.

Key Points for Parents: Here are some pointers on how to properly engage with your child throughout this edition. Page 4-5: For these two pages, the main goal was to help your child understand the importance of knowledge. Explain to them that before anyone discovers or invents something, they must go through years of learning. Another great point to add is that in Islam, Allah ’s first words to the Prophet was IQRA, which means READ.

Asalaamu Alaikum Dear Parents, Welcome to another edition of myDeen Magazine. This month’s theme is about:

Discoveries and Inventions As your child gets older, they will learn about different types of discoveries & inventions that changed the world. This is something that will be introduced to them either at school or through their homeschooling. However, many of the individuals they will learn about are not Muslim and we wanted to create a special edition to commemorate our great Muslim discoverers and inventors of the past. For this edition, your child will learn about Muslims who had a great impact on society through their amazing discoveries and inventions. Note: We stayed away from scholars or imams in our Islamic History as they require an entire edition just for them.

Page 13: Your child might need help making their paper airplane. We ask that you let them try it a few times before making it with them. Once they are done, ask them to colour their planes or put stickers on it and send it to our submissions team for review at: Page 20-21: The title ‘myDeen’ is a mix of English and Arabic words that mean ‘my Faith’. Through this activity, your child will learn the meaning of myDeen & insha’Allah be proud of their deen too. Do not forget to take a picture of their poster and submit it to our team at: Note: If you feel that your child is too old for this magazine, please let us know. We can start mailing them the ages 6-8 edition. For further inquiries, email the customer support team at:

Word of the Month

Our Islamic HISTORY is full of AMAZING Muslims who made the world a better place to live in with their hard work, discoveries, and inventions. History is when you learn about something that happened in the past. Now get ready to learn about some amazing Muslim brothers and sisters.

A DISCOVERY is when someone finds something new or a place that already exists but has not been found before by anyone. Example: Many year ago, someone decided to take leaves and boil them. They discovered that if you boil leaves, you can make tea. An INVENTION is when someone creates something new using their own ideas. These ideas come from studying and working hard from a young age. Example: After the discovery of tea, people came up different ways to boil the leaves properly to make a tasty cup of tea. A discovery can happen at anytime, however, an invention needs skill, and knowledge. If you want to invent something in the future, such as a new toy that has never been made before, or something that will help lots of people in the world, you need to work hard. Study and read as much as you can, especially when you are younger, so that you can have the skill and knowledge to invent/create something.

Allah tells us in the Qur’an to IQRA/READ so that we can learn new things. Before we can start reading, we need to learn the Alphabet first. Colour the letters then spell a few words by pointing with your fingers.

L IFE CHANGING INVENT IONS These amazing inventions changed the way we live and do things. Guess the name of each object and write the correct number beside it.

Without it, life would be different; we would be different. With your child, reflect on how important the inventions below are. 1) What was the alternative before? 2) How did the invention make our life easier? 3) What would they do if the invention did not exist today?

Great Muslims! More than 1400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad  taught the message of Islam to his people. Today, there are 2 billion Muslims in different parts of the World and each one of them is special like you. Islam is not just about praying and reading the Qur’an. Allah  wants us to always be learning, to help the needy, to feed the poor, to listen to our elders, to be nice to our brothers and sisters, to be gentle to the world around us, to treat animals with care, to smile at people, and so on. One way of helping people is by coming up with an invention or discovery that benefits them. Since the start of Islam, there have been many great Muslims who have changed the world. They have invented or have discovered things that are beneficial to people all around the world. Fatima Al-Fihri was the first person to open a University and she was a Muslimah. A University is a type of school for older kids to learn at. The kids below want to continue their studies at university, help them find their way.

Hasan Ibn Al-Haytham was one of the first to prove that Humans see things because of the reflection of light. What a Great Muslim! We see during the day because of sunlight but at night, when there is no light, it is harder to see things. This is because we can only see objects when there is either Sunlight or artificial light from lightbulbs. Let’s check your vision. Take three steps away from the page (1 metre) and read the letters below. Read with only the right eye first, then with the left. If you can read them all, then you have great vision, Masha’Allah!

Prophet Muhammad ď ƒ told us to use a MISWAK to clean our teeth and he was the leader for Muslims. Today, most of us use a toothbrush. Some Muslims still use the miswak to follow the Prophet’s way. Many also use a toothbrush to clean their teeth twice a day. Using an old toothbrush/paintbrush and white paint, clean the teeth below.

Just like Muslims of the past, we need to be proud of our religion. The great Muslims you learned about in this magazine had strong faith that made them strong. They loved Allah  and He loved them too! With their faith/Deen, Allah  helped them to be the best at what they do. Eventually, with their skills and hard work, they were able to discover things that changed the world, Masha’Allah Tabarak’Allah. Remember, Islam is not only a religion of praying, fasting, and reading Qur’an. These are all important and we need to complete them first. But after that, Allah  also wants us to be smart, strong, cheerful, kind, thankful, helpful, and so on. Always be PROUD to be a MUSLIM. One day you will change the world for the better too, insha’Allah!

The word ‘DEEN’ means ‘Religion’. As a Muslim, our DEEN is ISLAM. On the next page, cut out each letter carefully and glue or tape them on a sheet of paper. The letters should spell out ‘P R O U D O F M Y D E E N ’.
