Word of the Month

Ramadan

Ramadan is the BEST month of the year. Muslims all over the world do not eat or drink during the day in this BLESSED month. When someone doesn’t eat or drink all day it is called, FASTING . Muslims all over the world fast from SUNRISE to SUNSET in Ramadan. When the sun goes down, the fast is done and you can start to eat and drink. Make sure to go to sleep early to have enough energy to fast again the next day.

I love Ramadan There are FIVE PILLARS in Islam and the THIRD pillar is all about fasting. These ďŹ ve pillars are very important to Muslims. Fasting is when you don’t eat or drink for the whole day. This is something big kids and adults do and one day you will be able to fast with your parents too in sha Allah. During Ramadan, you also should be EXTRA NICE to everyone. You should treat people in a kind manner and try not to make anyone upset with you. Fasting is not just about staying hungry all day. Fasting is about showing Allah (Swt) that you can be strong, patient and a very good Muslim for Him.

Ramadan is a very important month for all Muslims. It comes only once a year, so let us make this Ramadan special!

Story Time It was a cold morning and Bilal did not want to wake up. He tucked himself under his warm blanket, but he kept hearing the noises his sister was making in the other room though. He wondered if she was waking up to eat before fajr so that she can fast all day. Sophia was only 5 years old and her parents told her that she did not have to fast yet, but she was so excited for Ramadan and wanted to wake up anyway. Sophia woke up every morning with her baba and mama and they ate Suhoor together. Suhoor is the breakfast you eat before the sun rises during Ramadan and it’s full of blessings. Sophia had been waking up every morning, while Bilal was always sleeping in. On the 5th day of Ramadan, even though Bilal wanted to stay tucked under his blankets, he decided to join his family for Suhoor. “Sophia, why do you wake up with mama and baba every morning? You know we are still young and don’t have to fast right?” Bilal asked. “I like to eat together with mama and baba, even if it’s very early. Plus it gives me lots of energy after I wake again. Sometimes I can fast all the way to lunch because I had a big suhoor. I’m practicing so when I’m older I can be ready to fast all day.” explained Sophia.

Bilal wanted to wake up in the morning too but it was so hard for him to get out of bed. He wondered if Sophia could help him. “Are you going to be waking up everyday for the rest of Ramadan to have suhoor with mama and baba? asked Bilal.

“Not always because mama and baba do not want me to fast everyday. I try to sleep early everyday so I can wake up with them, but only Allah  knows if I will wake up or not. I will do my best though not to miss any days, in sha Allah!” said Sophia.

“I know I do not have to fast too because I am only 6 years old but, I want to wake up with you every morning. Will you help me? I promise to try my best to get out of bed when you come to wake me up,” said Bilal.

“Yes I can help you Bilal! Whenever I wake up I will also come wake you up, in sha Allah. Make sure you try to sleep early everyday so that you are not sleepy during Suhoor time,” explained Sophia with a big smile on her face.

Bilal and Sophia kept on eating Suhoor with their parents. They would have some dates, cheese, bread and some milk. “Yummm! These dates are so sweet mama! They taste like candy but I know they are also very good for us,” said Bilal.

Mama replied, “I am so happy that you woke up with us today Bilal. Yes they are really good for you. Try not to eat all the date because we have to save them for when we break our fast later on today. I will go buy more dates at the shop today since you love them so much.”

“You mean we have to eat dates when we break our fast as well?” asked Bilal. Mama replied, “My dear Bilal, Islam teaches us that eating dates and drinking water is the best way to end our fasting after the sun sets. Prophet Muhammad

taught us how we should break our fast and he was the best person to ever live!”

“Sorry mama, but did you say ’Prophet Muhammad

?’

Who is he? I want to know more about him. Please mama!” Bilal begged. “It is getting close to prayer time for Fajr Bilal. Baba will explain to you who Prophet Muhammad

 was after

we pray and wake up in sha Allah. We will also get ready for Eid together which will be lots of fun,” said Mama. “I would love to know about Prophet Muhammad

 too! I heard

you say his name a few times around the house mama, but no one told us who he is. feel like he was a special man!” Sophia exclaimed. She was so excited and could not wait to learn more. Everyone had a good Suhoor, prayed and went back to bed for a few more hours. Bilal and Sophia tried their best to wake up every day for Suhoor with their parents. Some days they would even join their parents in Fajr prayer. It was getting closer and closer to Eid now. Bilal and Sophia couldn’t wait to celebrate on Eid day.

Join Bilal and Sophia next edition to take part in Eid festivities and learn about Prophet Muhammad

.
