Who is Allah ? Al-Kareem

The Most Generous Al-Kareem is the One Who is Most Generous, forever Giving to His Creation. Allah  says in the Qur’an:

What has emboldened you against your Lord,the Most Generous. [He is the One] Who created you, fashioned you and perfected your design.

{Surah 82, Ayah 7-6}

Allah  is the One who gives continuously and gives more than we deserve. He is always giving to His creation whether they worship Him or not. Imagine how many people in the world who do not believe in Him yet they live in beautiful homes and always have food on the table. This is because of the generosity of Allah , Al-Kareem, whose Giving has no end because He has no limits. HOW TO LIVE BY THE NAME? As humans, we tend to forget the small things we are always blessed with. There are moments where we are not the best Muslims and do not even deserve anything from Allah  , but He still bestows us with his Kindness ( ). He keeps giving us even though we might not see the blessings right away.

‫ﻟُﻄْﻒ‬

Remember to always thank Allah (who is Al-Kareem) for everything He has done for you, your family, your friends and everybody. Thank Him for the all the things you may not usually thank Him for such as your sight, hearing, ability to walk, parents, foster parents, a home or food. The list can go on. Be grateful ( ) for everything you do have and do not focus on what you do not have!

R amadan R eflections During the special month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world try to focus on getting closer to Allah  and His book, Al-Qur’an ( ). One of the reasons Ramadan is so special is that it gives us an opportunity to improve our self-control and discipline with food as well as avoid bad behaviour. It is important to keep up with these skills throughout the rest of the year. Be careful not to grow lazy in your prayers, reading Qur’an and donating to the needy. Ramadan is only one month of the year, and to truly attain the pleasure of Allah  and be saved on the Day of Judgement ( ), we need to be at our best everyday!

FAMILY ACTIVITY REFLECT REFLECT

1) Sit down as a family and discuss how Ramadan went. We tend to go back to living our normal lives right after, so it’s a good idea to spend some time reflecting on what we did and gained during Ramadan.

2) On Page 5 we gave you a blank letter template to write yourself a Post-Ramadan letter. FILL out the sheet and CUT the page out once you are done. Ask your family members to write a secret letter to themselves also. Below are some good sentences and questions to use to help you with your letters: During the month of Ramadan, I…

I learned in Ramadan that…

How much Qur’an did I read?

Did I pray all my prayers?

I felt like a good person, because…

In the months coming up, I hope to…

3) After you finish your letters, put them in an envelope and mark them, “DO NOT READ”. 4) Ask your parents to keep the letters in a safe place and in a few months WE WILL ASK YOU TO OPEN THE LETTERS. It will be a good reminder of the good deeds you did in Ramadan and encourage you to continue in sha Allah. myDeen.club

Giving thanks to Allah  is one of the most important acts of worship for any Muslim. We must do our best to always be happy with what Allah  has given us, even if we may have preferred something else. This can be very hard but it is also very rewarding because Allah  loves those who are grateful. LUCKY OR BLESSED? In Islam, the concept of being lucky does NOT exist. No one is lucky and no one can get “lucky” without the permission of Allah . Everything that is both good and bad comes from Allah  and not from being lucky or unlucky. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS! No one can ever count all the blessings ( ) Allah  has given him/her, without having to ask for them. It is important to show our gratitude to Allah , who says in the Qur’an:

‫اﻟ ِﻨ َﻌـم‬

If you should count Allah’s blessings, you would never be able to number (count) them. {Surah 16, Aya 18} There are many ways to show/give thanks to Allah . Below are examples of the two most popular ways: USING YOUR TONGUE: Say Alhamdulillah for all the good you have and the things that happen to you. You might think that things are bad when they happen to you, but Allah  knows what’s best for you. Therefore, we must appreciate the good and the bad things that happen to us all the time. USING ACTS OF WORSHIP: Pray on time and make lots of thikr ( ) during the day. Allah  loves those who worship Him and it is a good way to show that you are thankful for all the blessings He has given you.

‫ِذﻛﺮ‬

What happens when you thank Allah ? and ˹remember˺ when your Lord announced, “If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more!” {Surah 14, Aya 7} Muslims all over the world make du’aa to Allah  for many things, but one of the BEST ways to get more from Allah  is just by thanking Him for what you already have. Over the next four pages we will talk about some of the blessings that we might take for granted.

Be Thankful Blessing of Islam The greatest blessing of all is to believe in Allah  and to worship Him. Many of us are born to Muslim parents and take Islam for granted, while there are billions of people who are still searching for the truth ( ). This world is full of many hardships and trials. Through them we can search for God to help us through tough times. Alhamdulillah, since you are a Muslim, you already know how to solve most of life’s problems using the Qur’an and Sunnah ( ). The Qur’an is the word of Allah , which means you can read and hear His guidance whenever you want or need.

‫اﻟ َﺤﻘﻴﻘﺔ‬

‫ُﺳ ّﻨﺔ‬

There is no doubt that the greatest blessing we have is being Muslims and being able to learn about our beautiful religion of Islam. Be grateful and show your thanks to Allah  for being a Muslim! Blessing of Life

‫َﻣﺼﺎ ِﻋﺐ‬

There are many people who are going through hardships ( ) in their lives and some of them, unfortunately, would rather not live. Waking up everyday alive is a blessing by itself and we need to learn to appreciate everything that we have or even don’t have in our lives. Every breath that Allah  gives us is both a blessing and a responsibility; so use your day and time properly.

‫َﺟ ّﻨﺔ‬

If Allah  blesses you with Jannah ( ) in the Hereafter, know it is far better than this world, but that does not mean we should forget to enjoy ourselves in a proper way during this life on Earth. Many Muslims focus on the things that are haraam ( ), but in Islam Allah  has made much more things that are lawful (halal) to enjoy. For example, pork is haraam, but we still have chicken, beef, lamb, fish and many other animals that we are allowed to eat. Do not focus on what isn’t allowed/haraam and appreciate the lawful/halal things Allah  has allowed us to do.

‫َﺣﺮام‬

One very important thing to remember is that for all the people who are still alive, the “door of forgiveness” is still open. This means that you still have a chance to ask Allah  to forgive you because no one is perfect. Be grateful and show thanks to Allah  for giving you breath so that you can keep asking Him forgiveness while you enjoy your time on Earth in a halal way.

Blessing of Family It can be tough for some to see why family is one of the biggest blessings from Allah . We tend to get upset with our sibling(s) or our parents get on our nerves sometimes, but imagine not having them around at all… that would be a disaster! There are so many people in this world who do not have both parents or are not blessed with other siblings, or maybe they are adopted/under foster care. These people can sometimes be sad and feel like they are missing out or deprived in some way. Whether you have one parent, no parents, foster parents, no siblings, only one sibling and so on, be thankful for those family members who love and care about you very much! Do not focus on what you do not have and forget to appreciate those who are in your life. Blessings of your Body Human beings come in many shapes and sizes; some are tall, some are short, some are stronger, and some are fast etc. It does not matter how Allah  shaped you because at the end of the day, He  made you special in many ways. Having a healthy body and mind is a blessing we tend to forget. Imagine if you were sick every day and had to be in the hospital! Imagine if just one of your senses in your body does not work so well such as your sense of smell or sight! There are five senses in our body which are; the sense of touch, sight, smell, hearing and taste. If only one of these five senses did not work, then life would be harder for us. Remember to be grateful and thankful to Allah  for giving you a healthy body even if it’s not perfect, because there is no such thing as a perfect body. Lastly, Prophet Muhammad  said: Your body has a right over you {Sahih Bukhari} You have a responsibility to take care of your body every day. By doing this you are in turn showing thanks to Allah  for His blessings.

Blessing of Food Allah  provides for everyone and is known as Ar-Razzaq (The Provider). He is also Al-Kareem (The Most Generous) and consistently provides us with more than what we just ask for. The perfect example of this is with regards to food. If you have a full plate of food and go to bed everyday not feeling hungry, then you are truly blessed and need to say Alhamdulillah [say it 3 times]. The blessings of being able to have good food whenever you want is something most people in the world do not have. Just being able to eat and drink everyday makes you and your family richer than over 80% of the world. Subhan’Allah. Prophet Muhammad  said: Allah is pleased with His servant if, when he eats something, he thanks Allah for it, and when he drinks something, he thanks Allah for it {Sahih Muslim}

‫ِﺑﺴـم اﻟﻠّﻪ‬

Do not forget to say Bismillah ( ) before eating and thanking Allah  after you finish your meal. Also, try to finish all your food and do not throw food away, Allah  does not like people who waste the Al-Musrifoon ( ).

‫ﴪﻓﻮن‬ ِ ُ ‫اﳌ‬

Blessing of Having a Place to Live Our true home is in Jannah in sha Allah, but while we are on Earth ( ) we must show that we are grateful for the place we live in now. Many people around the world and even in our own cities, are forced to live on the streets, or shelters, or huts and so on and so forth. Most of them do not have electricity or hot running water. Our temporary “homes” are a major blessing whether it’s a mansion or just a small little apartment. Once again, by just having a nice and safe place to live it means that you and your family are richer than 80% of the world.

‫اﻷرض‬

A good habit to have in your home is to pray together as a family. Prayers that are offered together have more rewards than praying by yourself and it will also build love among family members. Prophet Muhammad  said: The example of a home in which Allah is remembered and the example of a home in which Allah is not remembered, is like comparing the living to the dead. {Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim}.

Blessing of Talent How boring would it be if everyone was the same? With over 6 billion people in the world, it’s a blessing that Allah  has created us so different in our own ways. There are people who are good at math and numbers, while others are very artistic. Some people are great at sports, while others are very good with technology. There are also many people who overcome obstacles in the way they were created to perform everyday tasks and to excel in their own way too. What makes us special is the fact that no one is perfect. Everyone is beautiful inside and outside in his/her own way. Allah  says in the Qur’an: Indeed, We created humans in the best form. {Surah 95, Aya 4} We have all been created in the best of forms even though we are so different. However special you are or whatever your talent may be, remember to always thank Allah  for giving you those blessings. It takes hard work and dedication to achieve your goals and do well but ultimately, it all came from Allah . Blessings of Friends This is a tricky one! A friend becomes a blessing to you if he/she helps you to become a better person and reminds you of Allah . Friends can be a blessing for you, but sometimes having “bad” friends can be dangerous for you and your faith. Prophet Muhammad  said: A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend (carefully). {Sunan Abu-Dawud} Note: *We have added the word carefully in brackets Be careful when you are choosing your friends and who you spend most of your time with. We hope you have a great group of friends, so do not forget to thank Allah  for having them in your lives. Prophet Muhammad  had many friends around him, so it is good to have friends, as long as they do not peer pressure you or influence you in negative ways to cross the limits set by Allah .

ia h p o S d n a l a il B f o s e r u t The Adven Sophia’s wrist was swollen and had been hurting really badly for the last hour or so. It was a dull ache at first but now her wrist looked like a little balloon. She should find her mother and let her know what happened, in case they need to go to the hsptal. She walked towards the benches at the park where her family was sitting. “Masha’Allah what a great turn out for the Eid festival this year. I have never seen so many people out here!” Baba said to Sophia as she walked back to the bench.

‫اﻟﺴـﻼم َﻋﻠﻴﻜ ُـم‬ َ

“Assalaamu Alaikum ( ), I am back.” Sophia called out as she walked towards her mother. “Mama, I think I hurt my wrist.” “Oh honey, it’s really swellon. What happened?” Her mom exclaimed. “I think I hurt it when we were playing tug of war. It was just a little bit of pain at first but now it’s swollen and I can’t move it much.” Sophia’s whimpered as her eyes filled with tears. “It’s ok love. We’ll put an ice pack on it for now and I will take you to the Emergency Room.” Sophia winced in pain as her mama placed the ice pack on her wrist, but the cool bag was soothing. Soon after they headed to the hospital. Later in the evening when they returned home from the hospital, Bilal and Baba were just getting out of the car. Bilal saw Sophia’s wrist in a cast. “What happened Sophia? “I fractured my wrist playing tug of war today. But at least we beat the boys,” Sophia said with a big smile.“Wow, can I be the first one to sign your cast?” asked Bilal. “Sure, but just don’t make any faces on it, I have to pray with it as well.” Sophia xplained.

14

Over the next few weeks, Sophia had a very hard time with her cast. It was her right wrist that had been hurt so she was having a dffcult time doing even the simplest of things. For the first couple of days, her parents took turns feeding her, but she felt like a little baby all over again. So she tried to eat with her left hand. There were many spills and messes, but eventually she learned. Writing was another impossible task. She couldn’t even hold the pencil properly. So again she tried to use her left hand but it took forever to write one small sentence. Her writing ended up looking like chicken scratch once she finally finished a sentence. Sophia then decided to type her work, which was a little easier but still very slow. Subhan’Allah, she never realized what a big blssng having a functional right hand was. Using the bathroom, making wudhu, taking a bath, putting on her clothes and shoes, these all seemed so hard with the cast on. Her family was there to lend a helping hand, but she felt so frustrated at not being able to do the simplest things. One day, after a long struggle with getting her hijab on, Sophia threw it across her room and began to cry. “Sophia, honey, are you ok?” Mama said while trying to comfort her. Sophia didn’t say anything, she just continued to cry. Sophia’s mother sat beside her and gathered Sophia in her arms. She smoothed down Sophia’s hair and kissed her fourhead. Sophia sobbed even louder, letting all her frustration out. After a few minutes, Sophia started to calm down. “Sophia, I know it’s been very hard for you with this cast. It’s been two weeks already, Insha’Allah you only have one more week to go.” “I was trying and trying to get my hijab on and it just wouldn’t work. I used to be able to just put it on in a few minutes, I have been struggling for half an hour and still can’t get it right.” She told mama. “One more week honey, and then the cast is off. Then you can go back to doing the things you used to. Think of those people who have to strggule like this for all of their lives. Subhan’Allah, we never think much of our fingers and hands when we go about doing our day to day activities, but what a big blessing they are,” said Mama.

15

myDeen.club

“Since I got hurt, I realized there are so many things that I could do that I took for granted. Things like eating, drinking, writing, bathing, making wudhu, skipping rope or playing badminton. I was able to do all of that and more without even thinking about it. I never realized what a difference having a cast would make to my daily ruotine,” Sophia realized. “When a difficulty befalls us, that time is a trial for us. We have to be patient and have Sabr/Patience ( ). You were able to make this Ramadan extra special for our Syrian brothers and sisters, Masha’Allah. All those amazing activities you did with your friends at the masjid; the bake sale, the crafts you made, helping serve Iftar, the food drive, the Iftar packs for the neighbours, and finally all the fun you had at the Eid festival. That was all possible with the help and mercy of Allah . Now that you have this cast, you can reflect and be grateful for all the things that you are able to do with both your hands that you never even thought about. In sha’Allah once the cast comes off, you will have a greater appreciation for your first bite of food, your first sip of water and the first word you write,” said Mama.

‫َﺻﺒـﺮ‬

“And the first time I’ll be able to put my hijab on all by myself in a matter of minutes, Insha’Allah,” smiled Sophia. Mama picked up Sophia’s hijab and began to wrap it around Sophia’s head. “Of course. Remmember Sophia, Prophet Muhammad  said that: No fatigue, or disease, or sorrow, or sadness, or hurt, or distress befalls a Muslim, even it were the prick (small cut) he receives from a thorn, but that Allah removes some of his sins for that {Sahih Bukhari} So there is always a reward for the pain and difficulty we go through, we just have to be patient.”Mama explained. Just then, Bilal walked into Sophia’s room with her jacket, ready to help his sister with the ziper. “Allhamdulillah for my awesome family who is always ready to help me whenever I need it. Jazak’Allahu Khairan everyone!” With that, Sophia hugged Bilal and Mama, then quietly thanked Allah  for blessing her with such a loving family. Can Sophia remember to be patient and not get frustrated until her cast comes off? Read next month’s story to find out! myDeen.club
