Dream It, Do It! awards presented at dinner Clinton City Schools’ sixth graders have been involved in an exciting program this year which culminated in an awards ceremony and dinner on Tuesday, May 7 in Oak Ridge. The evening was hosted by Rick Meredith, President of the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, and various members of the Education and Workforce Committee. Kim Harris and Kristin Waldschlager, co-chairs of the committee shared explanations about the process and announced the winners during the evening. During the fall semester, our sixth grade students visited and toured local industries to learn about their operations and to gain an understanding of our local commerce and industry. Upon returning to their base schools, the students divided into teams to continue researching the industries and thinking about how and why businesses advertise and highlight their successes. Select teams from each of our schools, as well as teams from Anderson County and Oak Ridge Middle Schools, participated in 3 competitions based on their grade level. Our sixth grade teams designed web pages for a local Anderson County industry, and third grade students made posters illustrating manufacturing in Anderson County. Awards presented during the dinner and ceremony on May 7th included the following:
*The AMAZE Award for a creative presentation using a song to make it unique, smooth presentation skills and good descriptions of the employee training, production, advertising and environmentally friendly workplace went to the Clinton Smarties from Clinton Elementary. *The THINK Award for a creative, polished web page which included an embedded video, a Roundme feature and interviews showed careful thought and planning within the team and was awarded to the North Clinton Cool Cats. *The INNOVATE Award for a creative presentation which was both polished and humorous while using an embedded video, interviews and a Roundme feature showed cooperation and thoughtful planning among the team was awarded to Shooting Stars from Clinton Elementary. *The final award for the evening, the EXCELLENCE Award, went to the web design which had a very professional tone while describing the work environment for employees using an embedded video and thorough descriptions. This award was presented to Clayton’s Class Crew from South Clinton Elementary. We are very proud of all of the students who participated in this endeavor, and thankful for local industries who support.

6th Grade Career Fair Clinton City Schools held the annual Career Fair for 6th graders on Friday, May 3. Students from each of the three schools came to Clinton Elementary for the day to learn from employers from the local area. The day began with a welcome from Mayor Scott Burton, followed by a soft skills presentation from Michael Ousley of Edward Jones Financial. Mr. Ousley spoke to students about the importance of a firm handshake, eye contact, and a strong voice when meeting potential employers. After the presentation, students were off to the Arowood Arena to learn about a variety of jobs in our local community.
Students rotated through each booth for a presentation about each job. Vendors discussed education and training, highlighted their job responsibilities and even shared an interesting story or two. Guidance, Technology, and Language Arts teachers had supported students in creating cover letters ahead of the event. Students completed job applications before venturing over to introduce themselves. Vendors accepted applications and gave students an opportunity to practice using their soft skills and answering questions about what made them the perfect candidate for the job.
Clinton City Schools is blessed with tremendous community support. Events such as this would not be possible without so many taking an interest in the future of our students. Thank you, 2019 Career Day Participants: • Joan Altobelli, CCS Educator • Steven Brooks, SL America Corporation • Mayor Scott Burton, City of Clinton • Assistant Chief Jim Campbell, Clinton City Police Department • Tony Cox, Clinton Courier News

Executive Coach, Dr. Chuck Carringer, addresses the 2020 Leadership Anderson County class during day one of orientation. Given the plethora of job skills and backgrounds represented by the class, each member will look for and take away something different. Caroline Gemmell, Y-12 Federal Credit Union, branch manager in Clinton I-75 recently moved to the area’ “I’m excited to learn more about the community and develop my leadership skills. I look forward to it from a professional point of view, to build connections with local people since I don’t know a whole lot of people yet. I want to be more involved in the community,” she said. “I’m looking forward to learning leadership styles, because my employees are so different from me.” Kala Hill works in accounting at Powell Clinch. “I grew up here, graduated from Anderson County High School. I wanted to get to know more people in the county and learn more about leadership because I would like a leadership role one day,” she said. “I really enjoyed the session on leadership with Chuck Carringer and his lessons on how to be a
good leader. You really have to care about employees.” She added, “I also really learned a lot from Naomi Asher about poverty, and the thinking process of people who have grown up in poverty. It gave me more understanding and compassion.” The Courier News reporter Crystal Huskey found Leadership Anderson County to be a challenge — an exciting challenge. “I learned a lot more than I expected the first day of Leadership Anderson County. Chuck Carringer was a very engaging speaker. He’s a life coach and a former basketball coach, and taught about the most effective leadership skills,” she said. “I learned that just because you’re a naturally bossy person, that doesn’t make you an effective leader. So I look forward to learning more. It’s been a lot of fun and I feel like everyone has already become friends. This has been really well organized and I can tell a lot of thought has gone into the planning. The Chamber really wants everyone to learn, grow and become an involved member of the community.”
Leadership Anderson County class members participated in team building activities during the first day of orientation.

This award was presented to Clayton’s Class Crew from South Clinton Elementary. We are very proud of all of the students who participated in this endeavor, and thankful for local industries who support.
