News

Making the Gardens more accessible Thanks to a generous grant from the Greenwich Neighbourhood Growth Fund, we have been able to install two disabled ramps out from the main hall, into the garden and to a brand new extensive patio area at the back of the house. We have also installed hand rails at wheelchair heights and when finished it will be complete with lighting and a non slip floor surface. Our contractor, Tomasz Bazan who had to overcome some stern challenges to complete the work, has done a fantastic job.

Summer Fun for our Core Team - a Watery Outing Our core team in early August were treated to an afternoon’s outing by the VCA board of trustees. As a small thank you for their commitment and steadfast service over the last 18 months, 10 staff were treated to a return boat trip up river, complete with with a sumptuous and some might say boozy lunch at Zizzi’s restaurant at St Catherine’s Dock .

Falling In Love Again - Welcome Amiyah!

NEWS

We are delighted to share news of the arrival of Amiyah, into the extended Mycenae family. Rebecca from our CafeBar team gave birth to the most beautiful baby in late July (just look at that picture!) . We at the house can’t wait to meet her when the time is right and no doubt we will post regular updates and pictures of this perfect specimen. We are already plotting to get her booked into Bo Peeps Pre school, so we can get mum back to work, with baby close by!

Digital Communities - Mycenae on the path to full inclusion We have set about making our community organisation a digitally effective one. This is a new long term challenge and with a long way to go. There will be online community services to come from us including resources, live and interactive programming, advice and support. We are already ethusiastic social media users and in August we made our onsite signage and diary information digital. We have also launched an brand new accissible web site. This is in part thanks to a grant we received from the Greenwich Neighbourhood Growth Fund.

Our partners in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany & France

Mycenae House, Visit Greenwich and the University of Greenwich are working with international partners in a four million Euro project to create digital support for young people to become entrepreneurs. The European Union funded partnership called Eyes is currently finalising the design of its first app called Utolo which aims to support young people in their quest for employment and business development. We are looking for interested local people, organisations and potential partners to help test and roll out this exciting project to young people.

The book everyone is talking about is For Sale here. Last Copies Well known local wildlife enthusiast and ecologist, Joe Beale has produced a stunning photo book, now available for sale at Mycenae House. The Birds of Greenwich Park is a unique photographic and narrative description of the bird life in and over Greenwich Park, covering both the present day and the history going back to the mid 19th century. This book contains many wonderful images contributed by notable wildlife photographers but is also full of expert content, drawing on the work of generations of bird observers. Copies of the book are just £5. Pick one up, they are in the craft cabinet.

New Trustee - Laura Durrant The Vanbrugh Community Association VCA are delighted to welcome Laura to join the board of trustees who manage Mycenae House. She is a local resident who has used Mycenae House for many years, including hiring rooms for functions and bringing her two children to a range of activities and classes.

NEWS

As a senior lawyer and consultant who runs her own business and is also the Chair of a start-up technology company and has other trustee positions with charities, Laura has a range of skills that will be helpful to the Mycenae House team. She is very excited to support the Board as we emerge from the Covid crisis, advancing how we continue to support and engage with our local community.

Cherry Tree Trunk Sculpture Friends of Mycenae Gardens working with Mycenae House & the Steiner School have commissioned a sculpture made from the tree trunk remains of the cherry tree which stood in the middle of Mycenae Gardens for the last few decades. Les Langley , a well known and popular chainsaw sculptor, spent a day in early August working on the tree under the watchful eye of young visitors to the gardens. They all played a part in deciding which characters emerged from the trunk of the tree including a woodpecker, a mouse, a beetle, a rabbit and a fox.

Laptop Heaven in the CafeBar We have installed a useful digital work space within the cafe, complete with 13amp power sockets and usb charging points complementing our free fibre broadband WIFI. If you use this space we ask that you ‘use’ the This area of the cafe also doubles up as a one to one digital training space for users of our Digital Training Services which are provided by SoulChip’s Paul Clayton. See the Reach Out Project pages for more details about Digital Training at Mycenae House.

The CaféBar at Mycenae House provides a warm and welcoming place to meet. catch up with friends, make new ones and sample the life of the house. It has become a haven for all kinds of people - young mums meeting other mums, older people tackling social isolation, laptop workers needing respite from home working, a meeting place for professionals to catch up one to one.

We love that our community sees this space as a safe, welcoming and supportive place. And of course we always have space to make more friends and opportunities to share a smile.

The Mycenae

CaféBar

‘The beating heart of Mycenae House’

The Cafe has a wide selection of snacks, sandwiches, light meals, pastries and cakes, fresh barista coffee, fruit and herbal teas, hot chocolate, canned drinks and fruit juices, children’s selections, chocolates sweets and crisps, ice cream in the summer and lots of seasonal treats. From this September we will have daily food specials and offers including fresh seasonal hot food. We also have a well stocked licensed bar with bottled wines and beers, spirits, juices and mixers.

Commissioning Art! We hadn’t planned to suddenly start commissioning artists to make work for us but a twist of fate and an act of generosity has resulted in a couple of wonderful opportunities to work with great local artists. Earlier this year we commissioned Stevo Sketches and Lesley Hall to make drawings of the house in very different styles. We needed an upto date an aging illustration of the house. You can see both here. We think they are both terrific!

Lesley Hall

We are currently considering proposals from sculptors to fill the architectural coves in the building. These were once filled by religious sculptures when the building was a convent. We are able to commission artists as a result of a very generous legacy gift from the family of a regular visitor to Mycenae who sadly passed away last year Susie Wright

Just some of the proposals that are currently underconsideration to make sculpture for the 2 external coves in Mycenae House

Established in 2017, Mycenae House Reach Out Projects offer a regular programme of activities plus one-off events to support those that are socially isolated and/or vulnerable, and who may suffer poor physical and mental health and loneliness. We try to connect those from hard to reach groups to get together and make friends. Friendships made at the Wellbeing Cafe proved vital during the lockdown when our community members supported each other. Mycenae Reach Out works to support those community members and signposts to other partnership organisations who can give expert advice in their field. We have also established many partnerships with some fantastic local organisations who we signpost to when our community needs advice & guidance. If we cannot help, we know somebody who can… The Reach Out project is currently funded by any surplus made from running Mycenae House. Profits from hosting parties and weddings, the income from the cafe bar, plus social events held here like concerts goes towards funding our Reach Out Programme. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic our income from room hire has been hugely affected, we have therefore established a crowd-funding campaign to support our Reach Out Projects and donations can be made here:

https://gofund.me/2e283eef We welcome ideas and initiatives to help support and fund the Reach Out work we do whether from individual members of the community, schools or organisations. Please get in touch if you’d like to help.

Mycenae Reach Out Projects

FUNDRAISING To Deliver Our Most Valuable Work www.gofundme.com/f/mycenae-reach-out-project It is a little known fact that our programme of Social and Digital inclusion work for the benefit of senior citizens, vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged local people has been funded almost entirely from our own earned income. It has never been funded from local authority, government or trust grants. Historically 97% of our income has come from activites such as hiring spaces, running events and Cafebar sales. As a direct result of the Covid 19 pandemnic our earned income has been reduced by 80% and we there for need to find other ways of financially supporting this vital work. We are busy applying for grants from trusts and foundations as well as government sources but we are also looking for support from our wider community. Can You Help?

Can You Help? We have set up a gofundme.com page to help raise funds for our drop in cafe Wellbeing activites, digital workshops and social events
