FINAL CONCEPT Original concept- 20 seconds of each decade My concept/ rationale - Isolation of soul My rationale was to incorporate the idea of isolation within Northern Soul and how feeling the music and dancing to it or even wearing the clothing took the individual to a space where they could zone out and feel part of a movement- a subculture, that took them away from a dull reality of working class hardships, parents and school to a new and exciting, everchanging place, even if it was just for one night or one song. Filmed in vintage stores and record shops.
Final Concept and Rationale I wanted to create a film that would show the public the Northern Soul fashion compared to the contemporary Sheffield street style. Most footage of the film was taken outside in the well-known flats and streets of Sheffield, to really show off the city and its culture. My main inspiration from the concept was taken from the ‘mods’ in the 80s, really paying attention to the culture, and considering the ‘rebellious’ stage. I also want to include graffiti to show the edgy art around Sheffield. The reason behind that was to give more knowledge to the public on Northern Soul, what it stands for, the fashion, and the streets of Sheffield as a whole. Personally, I found that Northern Soul stands for freedom found in music and dance. Also, that it was a time for them to be rebellious and free so it was my main focus to show that in the footage.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND STYLING- OUT COME I wanted to capture the common brands that featured within Northern Soul- Fred Perry and Adidas. Men tended to wear Polo shirts, wide legged jeans, button up shirts paired with vests (that could be taken off during a club night to cool off) often paired with a denim or leather jacket or a Harrington jacket. Clothing was often paired with patches that captured the famous 'keep the faith' slogan or showed their favourite soul artist. Doc Martens and Adidas trainers were popular footwear choices. I believe we featured/ styled these items well. Ben Sherman collection Heart of soul collection.
Photography and Styling The styling and photography progress was the most important step for my concept. Taking into consideration I want to show contemporary street style version of Northern Soul. So, getting single shots to show the details of the outfits, and recreating the grunge mods style. Also, getting different angles such as low angles to make the appearance of power to suggest freedom. However, I looked at different collections from the Gucci 2017 pre - fall campaign, Topman Design SS16 and Fred Perry FW15 which was all inspired by the Mods and Northern Soul. All these collections are based on the grunge 80s look and that was something I wanted to recreate. As well as incorporating brands such as Stone Island, Ralph Lauren and Adidas trying to recreate a modern version of the traditional mods outfits.
