Sustainable Ports & Harbours The world’s ports, waterways and coastal areas are the arteries that keep the global economy operating. MWH is a world leader in the design and construction management of waterways including: ports and harbours, canals and locks, dams, levees. As maritime traffic expands and becomes truly global, we offer innovative solutions for the sustainable and green design of waterways. MWH plays a key role in developing major works, such as the Panama Canal expansion, the Port of Oakland and Rijeka terminal container construction.

• Environmental Management System according to ISO 14001 • Safety Management System complying with OHSAS 18001:2007 • “Certiquality Excellence” award for successfully integrating Quality, Environment and Safety systems • Certified inspection body for project validations according to UNI CEI EN/IEC 17020

Projects Lead Designer in the Panama Canal Expansion Project MWH is the lead designer for the global consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) in charge of design coordination and final and detailed design for the Panama Canal “Third set of locks” expansion project, to be delivered in 2014. The technology designed for this project is unique and integrates MWH’s drive for sustainability by reusing 60 percent of the water in the lock system.

Water Treatment Plant Engineering in Harmony with the Environment, Brighton & Hove, UK The plant serves a population of 300,000 and collects wastewater from coastal towns around Brighton & Hove. Part of the works is housed within a building which will be covered with a grass roof. The innovative design minimises the visual impact on the landscape. MWH was responsible for developing the outline design, define the water treatment processes, and carry out the civil, structural and architectural detail design and integration.

Expansion Project for the Port of Oakland, US The Port of Oakland, California, is ranked fourth in the US for container cargo. In 1998, the Port began their Vision 2000 project to convert a former US Navy property into two major container terminals, including wharfs, container storage, buildings, rail yard, and a park. MWH provided programme management technical support and construction management and supervision services.

MWH Leads Design and Construction Management of Tekeze Dam and Hydropower Project, Ethiopia MWH provided engineering and construction services for the $350 million Tekeze Hydropower Project in northern Ethiopia. The government-funded project – and tallest dam in Africa at 188-meters-high – provides a reliable, renewable source of power for the country that has been forced to impose regular blackouts for its 80 million residents due to energy shortages. The project was named Renewable/Sustainable Project of the Year by Power Engineering magazine in 2010.

Sustainable Waste Water Treatment Plant in Gornate Olona, Italy The Gornate Olona wastewater treatment plant will serve an overall population of 82,000 people. MWH was responsible for the plant’s design, site supervision and health&safety supervision. MWH is also designing a 2,500 square meter photovoltaic plant to be installed on the shed roofs and on the green areas surrounding the plant. This will provide about 25 per cent of the electricity needed to run the plant.

Linking Three Major Cities in Northern Italy MWH’s environmental expertise and technical design capabilities have been the key to gaining outline design approval for a flagship highway project linking the cities of Brescia, Bergamo and Milan in time for Expo 2015. The 62 km highway will transport over 60,000 vehicles per day. Our experts have helped to minimise the impact of the project on the environment and to find the best solutions to minimise construction costs and time.
