A HISTORY

120 MASTERPIECES OF SYNTHETIC DESIGN

Welcome to the art of pleasure - as it is understood and misunderstood. From Stephen Bayley and Terence Conran, this new title is the first book to make luxury a polemical subject. Luxury surveys the vulgar excess that is now defined as luxurious, and a guide to the thinking person’s reaction to it. It also shows us that there is another definition of the luxurious. In this observant, polemical, witty, argumentative book two mavens of the design industry make the case for luxury by design.

Art & Design

A lavishly illustrated reference work that raises the aesthetic perception of plastics and celebrates their beauty as materials by bringing together an exquisite and highly curated survey of product designs in plastics. Classic Plastic is an essential guide to material culture and a must-have publication for all design aficionados. Classic Plastic features 120 landmark designs, from Wells Coates’ AD 65 radio to Konstanin Grcic’s MYTO stacking chair, that reveal a breathtaking profusion of colours and forms as well as inventive imaginations fuelled by utopian aspirations.

LO O K A RO U ND ! People seem demented by excess. Never mind less is more, too much

still seems not quite enough for a lot of folk. I have just seen a blinding white RollsRoyce Phantom with criminally white leather upholstery, probably sourced from virgin unicorns. You could drop a kilo of cocaine on the wintry landscape of its rear chairs and not even notice. I dare say it is fuelled by Napoleon XO brandy. I am absolutely certain I would not want to have one. “Luxury” has become a term of condemnation. In fact, it always was. Read Gibbon’s Decline and Fall (which comes highly recommended), and you’ll see that the Roman Empire imploded because too many of its fat and mad CEOs were besotted with gross material pleasures bringing about a fatal lethargy. In this reading, a love of luxury was a moral failing. In fact, it still is. There is nothing wrong with seeking out privileged experiences and superior merchandise, but a taste for ostentatious “luxury” nowadays betrays both too much money as well as severe psychological problems. This thought came to me as I sat in my Jacuzzi J-LXL with its lounge seating and platinum/rare Canadian chestnut cabin. I have sensitive skin so do not use mains water in my hot tub. Instead, I insist on filtered mineral liquids from a remote spring in Siberia, which is tended by novitiates from a nearby Orthodox monastery and ferried to my Mayfair apartment in lead crystal flagons. Here I like to sit and contemplate the tragic arc of great wealth, flopping like an exhausted meteor across the vault of heaven. Or hell. Oh, wait a moment. Someone has just brought me a snack of swan poached in Sauternes with a foam of Locmariaquer oysters served on a bed of smouldering Provencal hay dusted with lavender-infused larks’ tongues. I’ll tell you what, afterwards, I will need to work out with my Brazilian personal trainer who consumes only goji berries and pure oxygen. Of course, that paragraph is an obscene fantasy, but for many consumers it is going that way. And it is going wrong. At the end of July, Louis Vuitton, which dominates the global “luxury” market, opened a huge four-storey shop in Shanghai’s Plaza 66 mall, a spectacle of cringe-inducing horror to the fastidious aesthete. Because Europe and America are both sated with luxury goods and are financially bust (the two facts possibly related), business growth in “luxury” depends on consumers in China, avid for status. But there is evidence that the Chinese luxury market is itself slowing down. The New York Times said Louis Vuitton has been ruined by its success: it is now “common”, even in Shenzhen. In response, Louis Vuitton now offers made-to-order products as the ultimate in the longed-for exclusivity its mass-produced label alone used to offer. As another Irish designer Eileen Gray’s Bibendum club chair, chromed tubular steel and fabric, 1926–30. This innovative piece is one of the twentieth century’s most recognizable furniture designs. The chair was designed for a trendy young milliner, who commissioned Gray to redesign her entire Paris apartment, including furnishings. The chair was hailed as a “triumph of modern living”.

The 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom is an über-luxury car: its enormous size and expense are clear indications of the owner’s wealth. But would you actually want to be seen in one? It is a very advanced piece of machinery, but the aesthetic is the most important of its features: with a price tag starting at $350,000, customers presumably want people to instantly know how much they’re worth.

DALÍ’S WORLD THE ILLUSTRATED STORY OF SALVADOR DALÍ’S LIFE AND WORK

Art & Design

Published in collaboration with the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation and augmented by the inclusion of facsimiles of over 20 documents from its archives, this beautiful book takes the reader through the life of one of the leading lights of the Surrealist movement. Dalí broke boundaries like few others and themed chapters look at his fascination with other artists and writers, his collaborations with the film-makers Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock and Walt Disney as well as his adherence to, and then expulsion from, the Surrealist movement. Containing some rarely and previously unpublished works, Dalí’s World culminates in an examination of the legacy that Dalí left behind.

6

THE GALASALVADOR DALĺ FOUNDATION

A. (fig. 57) Portrait of Sigmund Freud, 1937

India ink and gouache on paper, 35 x 25.5 cm (13¾ x 10 in). Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres.

Dalí made several studies of Freud, even creating one during their encounter in July 1938. They were introduced by Freud’s friend Stefan Zweig. Freud was not in good health and Dalí’s sketch of him enhanced the skull, so that Zweig preferred not to show it to Freud. B. (fig. 58) The Image Disappears, 1938

Oil on canvas, 56.5 x 50.5 cm (22¼ x 20 in). Fundació GalaSalvador Dalí, Figueres.

At first glance, this appears to be a painting of a girl reading

a letter, but if one takes a step back, the image changes and becomes the profile of a man with a moustache and beard. His hair is represented by the curtain; the girl’s head becomes his eye; her upper torso his nose; her arm his moustache and the skirt of her dress his beard. C. (fig. 59) Swans Reflecting Elephants, 1937

Oil on canvas, 51.1 x 77.1 cm (20 x 30¼ in). Private collection.

Another of Dali’s most loved images, this “double image” shows his inventiveness in full flow. It is odd to see these birds in such a landscape, but when the viewer examines their reflections and sees how the elegant necks have become the trunks of elephants, the surrounding landscape seems to fit more easily with the exotic creatures. D. (fig. 60) Study for The Apotheosis of the Dollar, c. 1965

administers the estate of the late Salvador Dal and the Dal Museum in Figueres, Spain.

Pencil, charcoal and ink on paper, 60 x 46 cm (23¾ x 18 in). Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres.

The group of figures combine in a kind of double image to form a head (the final result can be seen on the right of the finished work). E. (fig. 61) Notebook with sketches for The Apotheosis of the Dollar, c. 1965

Pencil and ink on paper, 18.4 x 11.7 cm (7¼ x 4½ in). Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres.

These pages are taken from Dali’s notebooks and show his musings and sketches in preparation for The Apotheosis of the Dollar. The figure on the right-hand page can be compared with those that appear in the final painting at the top and behind the columns. F. (fig. 62) The Apotheosis of the Dollar, 1965

Oil on canvas, 400 x 498 cm (157½ x 196 in). Fundació GalaSalvador Dalí, Figueres.

The title is misleading since Dali did not intend to show that money could be turned into a deity, but that it could be transformed into art and as such have true meaning. What look like dollar signs are actually columns, based on those of the baldacchino of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The figures in the background and foreground represent Dali’s heroes, such as Velazquez, Don Quixote and Gala.

A. (fig. 45) Minotaure cover, no. 8, 15 June 1936 Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres.

Dalí designed this cover for the magazine which was founded in 1933 by Albert Skira in Paris. André Breton was one of the editors and Pablo Picasso also created original artworks for it. As well as designing its cover, Dalí also wrote for Minotaure. B. (fig. 46) Retrospective Bust of a Woman, 1970 (assemblage) Plaster bust with baguette and an ink well in the shape of JeanFrançois Millet’s Angelus on her head, corn cobs hanging round her neck and a cartoon strip as a collar, 54 x 45 x 35 cm (21¼ x 17¾ x 13¾ in). Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres.

This is a reproduction of the 1933 original. Dalí plays with the idea of a conventional bust of a woman by adding the shapes of two different food items and the collar featuring the cartoon character. He also alludes to two of his most enduring symbols with the model of the Angelus and the ants that are painted crawling down the woman’s face. C. (fig. 47) Salvador Dalí with some of the other members of the Surrealist group – Max Ernst, Paul Eluard, René Crevel, an unidentified woman and Marie-Berthe Aurenche – c. 1931. D. (fig. 48) Soft Construction with Boiled Beans – Premonition of Civil War, 1936 Oil on canvas, 99.9 x 100 cm (39 x 39¼ in). The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia.

This work was painted about six months before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Believed to have been influenced by Goya’s The Colossus (Panic), which hangs in the Prado Museum in Madrid, it depicts a Surreal group of limbs, one coming out of another and tearing at each other. The mass of flesh represents the civil war and the background is a landscape which, according to Dali “had been uselessly revolutionized for thousands of years”.

BIGGLES BIG ADVENTURES FOUR CLASSIC STORIES These action-packed adventure novels show Squadron Leader James Bigglesworth – known to boys all over the world as Biggles – at his fighting best from tackling a gang of slavers in the jungles of South America to foiling the plans of his Nazi enemy, von Stalhein, in the icy wastes of the Arctic; battling crooks in Canada to help an old friend and setting up an airbase at the very edge of the Nazi empire at the outbreak of war.

Captain W. E. Johns wrote scores of thrilling aviation yarns that were avidly devoured by Biggles fans young and old from the time they first appeared in the 1930s right up to Johns’ death in 1968 and beyond.

THE EVOLUTION OF A DARK SUBCULTURE

Gothic images are very much a part of contemporary culture, not least for a style tribe with a passion for black. Gothic has a very long history stretching over hundreds of years of aesthetic evolution, becoming a form of sensational narrative that encompasses fiction, film, television and graphic novels; a genre of underground rock music; and a distinctive visual aesthetic exploited in fashion, the visual arts and digital media. Gothic has proved marvellously adaptable, and fertile ground for endless imaginative reinvention. This book provides an introduction to the wealth of Gothic phenomena. “Nano” means “tiny”, and nanomachines are machines built on the nanometre scale. To give you an idea of how small that is, find a ruler and look at the smallest intervals, which show millimetres. Now imagine splitting that into a million smaller intervals – these would show nanometres. A human hair is typically around 90,000 nanometres across. Nanomachines are built from individual molecules or even just a few atoms.

Other nanoparticles have already been developed to carry luminous blobs of chemical. The other end of the nanoparticle is fitted with a molecule that sticks onto diseased cells. When a dose of these nanoparticles is injected into the body, they find their target and light up, so that doctors can locate the problem when they scan the patient.

Another design uses a tube coated with zinc. When dropped into acid (such as in the human stomach), the zinc reacts to create bubbles of hydrogen gas, blasting the rocket at speeds of up to 100 times its own length per second. If the nanorocket were fitted with molecules that can recognize and destroy germs, it could be let loose inside your body to help protect you.

Today the world’s leading research institutes are working on making this into science fact, by creating nanomachines little bigger than atoms, which might soon be able to patrol our bodies.

Bubble-powered nanorockets Scientists have already created bubble-powered rocket nanobots in the laboratory. A layer of material a few atoms thick is rolled into a tube and filled with hydrogen peroxide, which reacts with water to make bubbles. When placed into water, the tiny rocket shoots a stream of bubbles out of one end, driving it forwards.

A new industrial revolution

60

Think about the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the world. Big machines were able to take over many complicated tasks. But most of them are too big for jobs at the level of molecules. Nanomachines could change all that, doing the same kinds of jobs as big machines but with individual atoms and molecules. For instance, nanobots are nanoscale robots: tiny machines that can move about, pick things up and even destroy things. They could make it possible to inject tiny robots into the bloodstream to attack germs, clear blocked arteries and fix broken nerve or muscle cells.

Future nanobots]

A NANOSUBMARINE, CREATED BY MICROTEC, TRAVELS THROUGH AN ARTERY.

In the future, nanobots could be built that can live inside the body for long periods, find their own way around and locate trouble spots. Some could be equipped as hunterkillers to track down viruses, bacteria and cancerous cells. Others could be fitted with cutting equipment to clear away plaques, the fatty build-ups that clog arteries.

The Dungeon Young Richard Darcy shivers as he climbs down the steps to the cellars in the stone keep. This is the darkest, coldest part of the castle, where prisoners are held. Troublemakers thought to be spies are sometimes tortured here, but most are simply locked away in heavy chains and forgotten about. Can you add some spooky stickers to the dark, dank dungeon to complete the scene?

The oxygen passes through the skin of your lungs and into your blood. ANSWER: C Your immune system records every germ you have ever met, so if you meet it again, you have strengthened defences against infection. ANSWER: C Your body contains the most amazing network of blood pipes. As well as protecting you against infection, it controls your temperature, and makes vitamins that are essential to your health.

Gravity compresses the spongy discs between your spine bones when you stand, but they expand by the same amount each night. ANSWER: C It may be legal, but tobacco is the deadliest drug available. It kills nine times as many people as heroin and cocaine put together.

THAT’S MY HAND! It may be made of metal and rubber, but to the owner it feels like a real hand. Each of us carries in our brain a “body image” so that we know what’s “me” and what’s not. Our brains are smart enough to adapt quickly if we get a bionic hand or some other replacement part (see also page 136). To see how it feels, try doing the experiment over the page with a friend…

ANSWER: B Sitting still, you produce about 100W – as much as an old-fashioned light bulb. Exercise makes you much hotter, though. ANSWER: C More than on any paint chart, though we can’t name them all! However, strange and short-term diets don’t make lasting changes. To stay at a steady, healthy weight, you need to always eat sensible amounts, and get vigorous exercise several times every week.

THE STORY OF THE

FIRST WORLD WAR

COMING SOON

FOR CHILDREN

from Carlton Books

The First World War was the world’s first ‘total war’ between modern, industrialised nations. Mechanised warfare saw new and terrifying weapons fully-deployed for the first time, including warplanes, tanks, zeppelins, giant warships and poison gas. On the verge of the centenary of the start of the First World War, this fact-packed book relates the unfolding events and the human stories in a way that brings history to life. It is produced in conjunction with Imperial War Museums, a brand that parents instantly recognise as having educational integrity in this subject area.

john malam John Malam is a children’s author specializing in nonfiction. He has written more than 200 books including many history titles. John is a National Literacy Trust Reading Champion, recognised for his work in encouraging reading amongst young people, particularly boys. He has a background in history and archaeology and lives in Cheshire, England.

The British Army The First World War was essentially an infantry war – a war fought by soldiers on the ground. Britain’s navy and newly formed air force were also active, but it was the foot soldier on the battlefields of Europe, Africa and Asia who saw most of the fighting. He had the traditional nickname ‘Tommy Atkins’ or ‘Tommy’ – an ordinary-sounding name for the common British soldier. 12

British Uniform British Tommies went off to the First World War wearing khaki-coloured uniform (‘khaki’ is an Urdu word for ‘dust’). The jacket was loose-fitting and had four pockets on the outside with button-down flaps. Men also wore khaki trousers, or kilts if they were from a Scottish regiment. In the early part of the war, soldiers wore khaki peaked caps which offered no head protection at all. By the summer of 1916, steel helmets with a khaki finish had been issued.

Kitchener’s Army Britain’s volunteer army was easily outnumbered by the massive conscript army of Germany. In August 1914, Field Marshal Earl Kitchener launched a public appeal for men to enlist. Within days, 100,000 men had volunteered to join Kitchener’s Army, as it was soon known. Thousands more followed over the coming months. They had to be aged 18 and over, though many younger volunteers lied about their age in order to join up. As long as they passed a medical examination, they were given the ‘king’s shilling’ – their first day’s pay. They were now in the army for the duration of the war.

Over their jackets, soldiers wore webbing. This was a wide waist belt attached to shoulder straps. On each side of the belt were ammunition pouches, which held 150 rifle bullets. On the front were smaller pouches and places to attach a bayonet, a water bottle and an entrenching tool for digging.

Puttees were worn to protect the lower legs. These were long, narrow strips of khaki cloth, wrapped tightly around the leg from the ankle to just below the knee.

Posters were put up to encourage men to enlist. They had slogans, such as ‘Your country needs you’, ‘Britain needs more men’, and ‘Daddy, what did you do in the Great War?’.

This gallery showcases some of the wide range of visual communications used by both sides during the First World War. It includes recruitment posters and practical visual guides for soldiers, through to the work of war artists recording life on the front line.

STRANGE HILL HIGH

Carlton presents a fantastic range of story and activity books bringing the adventures of Mitchell, Becky and Templeton to the page. Set in an all-but-forgoen inner-city school with a plethora of secrets and mysteries, Strange Hill High follows a team of three students who take it upon themselves to investigate all manner of bizarre and other-worldly occurrences that seem to only happen at Strange Hill High... always with absurd and outrageous results.

A knapsack on the back was for food rations, a blanket, a coat and personal items. When fully loaded, a soldier’s webbing and kit weighed about 32kg. A 43cm bayonet could be fixed to the end of the rifle. It was carried in a scabbard attached to the belt. Infantry soldiers were issued with a Lee Enfield Mark III rifle, which fired .303-inch calibre bullets. The rifle’s magazine held ten bullets. A trained infantry soldier could fire up to 30 aimed bullets per minute. At the start of the war, heavy stick grenades were used, but from 1915 soldiers were issued with the smaller, oval Mills bomb. After the safety pin was pulled, the grenade was thrown. It exploded seven seconds later.

13

First aired on CBBC in May 2013, Strange Hill High has gained fantastic ratings among 6-12-year-olds! With show production led by The Simpsons’ Show Runner Josh Weinstein and using all-new innovative techniques combining puppets, vinyl and digital effects, Strange Hill High mixes everyday classroom antics with fantastical and mysterious goings on!

British Colonial Forces Soldiers from the countries of the British Empire fought for Britain. Nearly 1,500,000 troops came from India, and 1,000,000 were from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies.
