Recollection M. Walker

The true picture of the past flits by. The past can be seized only as an image which flashes up at the instant when it can be recognized and is never seen again.

AFTERWORD Recollection is boundless. Recollections populate the landscape as vestiges of memory, place markers or records, as much as products of ethereal perception. Recollection gathers images of place that populate disparate circumstances of personal experience within the physical landscape, a reflection of a particular place and time. The photograph promotes contemplating and reconciling otherworldly considerations rooted in memory and identification. It is the space between memory and perceived voids that drives the formation of associations through space and time. Recollection is a template of conceptual history, utilizing the contemporary landscape as the means of recognition and remembrance. The past dwells within these images of space and transition only to be aroused as an instant of flitting recognition. The locations are both intrinsic and obscure, and are often lost to more romantic notions of growth and remembrance. The artifactual construction of the contemporary landscape is no less significant as a place maker of memory, and therefore a part of this history. History is not bound to a seamless chronology, but is itself a collection of disparate experiences and subjective analysis.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is with gratitude that I acknowledge the assistance received throughout the duration of this opportunity. The behind-the-scenes support, and encouragement has been integral in the development of this photographic book project, and is central to its successful completion. Special thanks go to my colleagues at Visual Studies Workshop for this opportunity, and for the ongoing collaborative creative environment that I have benefitted from, and am fortunate to contribute to, and work within. The 175th Anniversary committee at the College at Brockport, the Department of Art, and the institution at-large also deserve a hearty note of appreciation. Through the 175th Anniversary committee’s project commission, and the associated honorarium via an artist residency at Visual Studies Workshop this publication was made possible. Additionally, the interest, assistance and generosity of the faculty, staff, and students at the College at Brockport has greatly assisted in the completion of this project. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to my family. Without their continuous support and flexibility this endeavor would not have been possible.
