Introduction We all know that the process of construction of a hub is not always easy. We went through this experience, and today we can proudly share some achievements and results that generated a dynamic form of operation and engagement among the members. There are many challenges ahead, but we can say that entering this road of learning and overcoming obstacles has been rewarding and transformative for all of us! We hope our story will inspire other shapers to design and structure of their hubs, and we also hope that other stories will be shared so that in the future we can arrive at a state-ofthe-art model that will be even more dynamic. After all, we are today a network of 260 hubs across the world! 9

We believe that sharing this process is of the utmost importance to the expansion of the Global Shapers community in the world, as well as an acceleration tool in order to advance the social impact of our cities. Over the last year, we have divided our story into 4 chapters:


Becoming friends In the first stage, we made our applications and we were selected by the WEF. Some knew each other and others did not, but we all became part of our own routine as a group. We classify this first moment as a time of integration, where we met each other and identified complementary skills.

Create a group identity. The establishment of informal environments, meetings and dinners helped us to get to know each other better and create a general empathy. 11

From the beginning, we realized that the diversity and multidisciplinary of the group were our main assets (“The roots of ourselves are the roots of the group�). Despite the complementary competencies, we were guided by values that bonded us together to a common desire for transformation. The respect for the ability of each member of the group promoted a horizontal structure, no hierarchy, with clear channels of communication and interaction.

Another important factor was counting on the support and mentoring of leaders from the WEF community. These leaders played an important role in structuring and consolidating the group, since they have helped us organize and understand the process of governance, principles and values of the WEF.

Seek mentoring, support and guidance from leaders of the WEF community in your country. They will guide the group in times of doubt and uncertainty. The guidance and participation of these leaders was critical on leveraging our projects, strengthening our network and our governance structure.

Invite an YGL from your country or city to engage in the design of projects and activities from your hub. It is essential that his or her participation be horizontal and active, where everyone will build together with a “hands on� attitude. Another important point in the construction of our hub was the participation of a shaper in the Shapers Curators at the Annual Meeting 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. 16


Always consider on your hub calendar the WEF agenda of events. Attending events, meetings and forums can provide an opportunity to exchange, inspire, validate and expand your projects. To finish this first chapter: (integration between the members), it was essential to schedule weekly meetings on days and places defined as headquarters. In the case of our hub, two shapers made their office rooms available for our meetings and took turns holding the weekly meetings at these two locations. These dynamics, along with the creation of communication channels such as Google Groups, Dropbox, and Whatsapp have given us a fast set-up of our work. Among the five days of the week, one of them was always focused on the activities of the group!

Set a day and place for the meetings, which can be weekly, once every two weeks or monthly. This gives the flexibility and organization needed to set-up and engage the hub. 18

Freaking out and now What? At one point we came to this second chapter: what now? It was a period of extreme pressure and anxiety. We began to ask ourselves: what cause unites us? How can we impact our city, São Paulo? What projects will we run? Obviously these questions guided us from the beginning, but as we got to the point of defining our mission and values they have intensified. Amidst the whirlwind of ideas, one seemed to show us a way to help us structure our hub’s mission and vision: orientation meetings. This process involved the active participation of leaders of the WEF in Brazil who introduced us to their network of partners and supported us by organizing meetings with people of various backgrounds: social entrepreneurs, politicians, businessmen and community 20

leaders. They were the ones that could inspire and help us to clearly identify the needs of our community in S達o Paulo and Brazil. From that moment on we began to create a network of partners and mentors who would guide us along our way. It was these meetings and interactions that have helped us in structuring our ideas, building a clear vision, mission and values for the S達o Paulo hub.


More than just helping in the construction of a mission, the mentoring process is a building bridge between generations. It brings wisdom and discomfort. For us, the discomfort was the source of innovation.


Breathing and thinking: With the mentoring process we were able to broaden our minds. From this point on the project came almost naturally, as a way of expanding the conversations we have had during all of the meetings. We finally decided that we had reached the time to act, to put into practice an idea, although it seemed not be the “perfect and ideal” project. We felt that we needed to work together as a group in order to create a new rhythm and not to waste our time philosophizing on how we can change the world. It was during a mentoring meeting that someone came up with the idea: why not launch a Dignity Day in São Paulo? And so this was our first project as a hub. Even with the discomfort of some members that this was not “the project”, holding this event opened doors to great innovation.


Start small and with an activity as a group. Test the synergy of the group in action. This process allows the group to get to know each other better, and it may open new opportunities for other projects. By replicating a project that was already in progress, it allowed us to innovate. From an idea that was already established, we were able to complement the event with our own ideas and also adapt it in order to suit it into our country’s reality. We can assure that this adaptation and complementation of ideas was key to help us define our next steps.

Shaping our project:

From Slaves of Job to the Project! After successfully holding our first event, we knew that we had all the tools and network of people required to start a project with high social impact. With that, we realized that the best way for a realignment of the group was to have a strategic planning immersion for the group. The first step on building “with” and not “to” people is simply the way we incorporate the principle of dialogue and exchange of ideas. We have realized how powerful it is to brainstorm without judgment. This is a major step towards co-creation. With that, we were able to understand different worldviews and ideals of everyone in the group all underlying in the same foundation of values and principles. This was a very enriching experience. After these exercises, the next step was to create a real team! For this we made a group exercise of a Brazilian cooperative 24

game called: Slaves of Job. Although it is a childhood game and it seems easy is much more difficult than imagined, it involves a system of cooperation that if a person fails the whole group fails. In order to evolve as a group we must all grow together, it is at this point that emerges cooperation, help and teaching between each other. As the African proverb says: “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together”. We want to go far! Finally, our planning retreat ended with a thought and assembly of our project! With much dialogue and teamwork, we realized that our vocation as a group is the multisciplinarity and the ability to build “with” and not just “for” the people and we highly believe on the youth as a potential transforming agent inside his own reality and community.

Strategic Planning

Strategic planning was important because we could be focused around a common project. This process allowed us to put forward concrete ideas on paper and create a new model of organization: WGs (workgroups) on each front involved in the project. After the strategic planning we went into the field. We talked to people who dreamed about impact. We went to the community to build a dialogue with all stakeholders: teachers, students, family members, directors and government representatives. The integration between these “actors� in the society helped us refine the project and, more importantly, to readjust our initial ideas with the community in order to do something of value and that caused real transformation.

Integrate the beneficiaries of the projects on the agenda of the hub. Make sure they participate in workshops and mentoring. These people constantly bring a sense of reality and relevance to the projects.

First municipality chosen for our Project: POA -SP Partner in this transformation journey: Lacy Lenski Lopes School Why POA? Our shaper, Eduardo Lyra, was born there and knew how much the community suffer from the neglect of public policy

POĂ When we got inside the Lacy Lenski Lopes public school, we were faced with the reality of teenagers below 18 years old that had lived so many life experiences that just the outskirts would provide. So we realized that the best way for us to start our project with them would be to listen and make an invitation: to build together. We had emptied ourselves of any knowledge we previously had and immersed on the listening exercise of those youngsters that were so worn out. Although they were tired of the issues faced living in the oustskirts, we identified points of hope in the environment they pictured to us. In order to make this hope a shared dream, we used the language they were already used to: hip hop, funk (a typical dance from the outskirts), plays, graffiti and stories of people just like them that have overcome all the obstacles and have succeeded. 32

It was inside this process that those small “sparks” of hope got together and became a “furnace” of mutual dreams: to transform the school as a better place and to provide a dignified future to all those youngsters. From this starting point we capitalized our project with the participation of hundreds of students and family members, also teachers and school directors and coordinators. As a final development stage of our hub, we were faced with the following question: we all have an intense personal and professional life, many commitments and limited time. How are we going to implement a project in a way to ensure fluidity and results? After all the pondering and brainstorming, we realized that our role was to create intelligent and meaningful connections and possible partners in order to leverage our project. That was the main point that assured us rhythm and pulse rate.

Identify partners that will be able to operationalize similar projects on a daily basis. Connect these partners to create a complete and integrated platform capable of achieving the objectives of the hub. 33

Our governance structure was refined after the experiences we acquired and developed as a group. Rather than devoting endless hours to writing a letter of governance and hierarchical structure of our hub, we dedicated our efforts primarily on creating a real group, with an identity. Only later on we created the formal structures of governance such as: deliberative decisions, setting roles between shapers and creating a formal organization. This allowed us to develop a lean governance structure, very dynamic and effective in order to serve the real aims of the hub. The WGs we had created in strategic planning actually worked only after we implemented the project.

Dream big, but make sure that as a group you share the work in subgroups. Having aligned objectives brings decentralization of activities which allows the project to flow more quickly and efficiently. 34

Conclusion: And so we completed the first cycle of our hub. The process was intense and it is continuous. We understood that the initial phase of establishment of the hub was critical to set up the foundation as to create our values as a group and to integrate everyone. More important than just developing a new hub, the creation of an identity by means of dialogue and mutual action was a primary factor of success. With values rooted, the mission is clear. As in a great journey we know that this is not the end, but just the beginning of a learning process in order to build a lasting legacy of transformation. As the journey of the hero has many challenges, doubts, uncertainties, and learning curves still to be attained and so the story continues: How to achieve scale? How to generate indicators of impact? How to deal with 36

anxiety? How to tell this story to many others? These are some of the questions we are currently dealing with! The answers we do not know but one thing we know for sure is that we are on the way ... And the story continues... Help us build this story, because we want to go further with you all!

André Gravatá, 22, is an education activist, journalist and fiction writer. After

graduating he wanted to continue studying and decided to do an “informal doctorate”. For that, he got the support of some of Brazil’s top professors who are now tutoring him throughout this experience. He was the organizer of a TEDx event about “micro revolutions” and in 2012 he won a sponsor¬ship from TED to go to Doha for a TEDxer’s event, along with other 800 peo¬ple from all over the world. After this, he hosted another TEDx, about “how to turn ideas into practice”. Nowadays, he’s planning the TEDxSéED, around the subject “micro revolutions in education”. His involvement with education started when he was a teenager, when he realized the importance of knowledge in his life. He has been developing an educational project in a consultan¬cy - a game for public school students that promotes youth protagonism. Moreover, he’s going to publish a Creative Commons book, about innovative education in different learning spaces all over the world. The book is called “Around the world in 12 schools” and the purpose of this project is to inspire people around the world about new ways of teaching and learning.

Germano Guimarães is graduate in Public Administration from Fundação


Getulio Vargas in São Paulo and graduate in Global Competitiveness Leadership Program from Georgetown University in Washington. He was advisor of the Secretary in the Department of Social Development of the State of Sao Paulo. In the Federal Government, he worked in the Administrative Council for Economic Defense in Brasilia. He was advisor of the chief of staff in the Department of Education of the State of São Paulo. He worked at the Instituto Endeavor with entrepreneurship education. Former president of Georgetown University – GCL Alumni and co-founder of the Big Bang - Meeting of young leaders and entrepreneurs in Latin America. He is currently a Director and Co-founder of the Instituto Tellus. In 2010 he won two awards in the categories of Innovation and Excellence in Public Management from Mario Covas Award. He is member of Advisor Council of Instituto Natural and member of Global Shapers of World Economic Forum.

Born in Guarulhos (SP), Eduardo Lyra lived part of his life in the slum, but skirted the chaos and studied Journalism in the University of Mogi das Cruzes (UMC). In 2010 he was considered a revelation reporter by Itaú Cultural Institute. In the same year, wrote the book “Dialoging with Leaderships” where he came face to face with national figures, like Oscar Niemeyer, Fernando Collor, José Dirceu, Marina Silva and Fernando Morais. In 2011 wrote the book “Young Falcons”, which tells the true story of 14 young Brazilians that managed everything from scratch. With the preface of CQC’s presenter, Marcelo Tas and back cover of the UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador and President of ABC Group, Nizan Guanaes, the book has inspired thousands of young people in the whole country. With friend’s collaboration, founded the project “Generating Falcons”, with the purpose of rescuing the youth self-esteem. Lyra has led the idea that “everybody can” inside the public schools, and has reached thousands of young Brazilian students. Besides the lectures, the author has reached more than 1 million people through Youtube.

Janaína Lima is coordinator for Youth from the Department of Sport, Recre-

ation and Youth Affairs of the Government of the State of São Paulo. Councilor of CONED - Council of State Policies on Drugs, Committee member of the Interdepartmental Coordination Policies for Sexual Diversity, Department of Justice and Citizenship of Sao Paulo, Vice President of National Youth Brazilian Labor Party (PTB) and National President of AJUTRA. Born on the outskirts of the south of Sao Paulo, she has led many social actions which earned her prominence. She was President of the Rotary Club SP Campo Limpo (2006-2008) where was awarded with the Prize Dolce Vita (2006/07/08). In 2008, she received the title of “Paul Harris Fellow” award from Rotary International as well as had a project chosen as a model by the Bill & Melinda Gattes Foundation. Lawyer, member of the Business Law Cardoso de Mello and tax planning specialist with emphasis on Third Sector and a postgraduate degree in public law.


With a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations (PUC-SP) and undergraduate engineering student (UFABC), Janaina Nascimento utilizes her expertise on Latin American drug policy, Latin American Social Development and youth mobilization movements. Since 2008 Janaina has been working to promote the dialogue in different levels through community projects organizing events, face-to face meetings and virtual platforms. From June 2011 to July 2012, Janaina was a member of the secretariat of the Latin American Initiative on Drugs, an initiative coordinated by Patricia Villela Marino, led by former President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso and nationally implemented by Igarape Institute. In August 2012 she joined the BRF Institute team as a social Investment consultant where is currently running a volunteer platform of 41 brazilian municipalities in order to promote local income generation opportunities. Janaina is also a member of a brazilian Youth Platform called ‘Rede Pense Livre’, composed by 60 young brazilian leaders which are working together for the implementation of a positive agenda regarding the drug policy reform in Brazil and Latin America.

Graduated in Public Administration (FGV) and Gastronomy (Senac), Renata Szeles works with strategic planning and new business models in one of the biggest media companies in Brazil. In 2007, she joined David Hertz, Gastromotiva’s founder, to led and developed strategic partnerships in order to educate and enable new possibilities to low-income youth. Participant of Slow Food Movement, she believes that gastronomy is a cultural knowledge capable to join communities and result in interactions that can improve the state of the world through alternative solutions. In 2010, she started her career in the corporate sector and realized that her constantly contact with shareholders, through her work in leading innovation and strategic project, was an opportunity to direct projects that can generate social and financial impact.


Marcella Monteiro de Barros Coelho works at Instituto Endeavor as a

coordinator of the Global Entrepreneurship Week, a movement present in 124 countries around the world, founded by Gordon Brown with the objective to connect, inspire and empower people . She has been working with themes related to citizenship since she was 8 years old. At 17, became co-ordinator of the NGO Sonhar Acordado. She has Studied law in University Mackenzie, in São Paulo. From 2006 to 2012 she has worked as a lawyer in the Third Sector, Social Responsibility and Culture Area of Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados in São Paulo. Member of the Public Network for Change, director of the Youth Social Responsibility Committee of FIESP, board member of the Foundation for the Blind Dorina Nowill. In 2011 she has been chosen amongst Brazilian youth to participate in the meeting of The Elders in RJ / Brazil. Finally, Marcella has an ongoing participation as a representative of civil society in several public policies conferences in the area of social assistance, human rights and youth and has just been elected as a National Delegated by the State of São Paulo for the First National Conference on Public Policies for Youth in Brazil.

Pas Schaefer studied natural sciences at University of São Paulo - USP. His

graduation helped him to think and access new ways to sharpen people’s curiosity about the complexity of nature. For this reason, Pas uses painting and graffiti to spread the union between art, science and education. In order to do so, he has traveled to study the Brazilian Southeast and Amazon as well as Western Europe, where he had the opportunity to do an artistic residency in Paris researching the local wildlife in Barcelona, Brussels and Amsterdam. He has plans to travel the world by bicycle researching science museums and studying ways to generate more creative cities. He is explores colors, surrealism, the study of birds, insects, underwater life and eyes. He has taught art classes and creative process for two years to incarcerated youth as well as helped to build up the first public library at a low income neighborhood called Bras. Today he is dedicated to start up a project called Infograffiti, which is a science class at streets using graffiti techniques with youth.


Marcela Fraga Rocha Marcilio Brazilian, Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration with a minor on international business at Liberty University. She is a product and marketing manager for antifraud solutions at Experian Brazil, the Global leader in providing information for companies and consumers. Her products have the focus of providing the means for companies to do more and better businesses and for consumers to be safer on making financial decisions. With the passion for generating change and impact wherever she was inserted into, Marcela co-founded the first Student Council for her school and participated actively on raising funds for the “Adopt a Student” project where companies and individuals paid for kids and teenagers to have acess to education. She was also able to unite her passion for business and the third sector by initiate a start-up at Experian Brazil to deliver products for consumers to know their credit situation and mostly to educate on credit and finances.

Graduated by University Cásper Líbero, Thaís Wrobleski Gagliardi is a journalist that works as a Public relations agent in the segments of gastronomy, tourism and food industry in São Paulo. In 2011, she started-up the Agência TAO to develop her own kind of communication strategies and work with what she really loves – food. She’s known for her creativity, her curiosity regarding new trends and for gathering professionals in projects that integrate different fields of expertise. Since childhood she has been developing her social sense and started volunteering in a literacy class for adults in her home town, in the countryside of São Paulo state, and since then keeps participating in and contributing for social actions. Marcelo Maia Rosa has built a successful career as an architect and artist

in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is currently an associated architect of the office Andrade Morettin, and the architect in charge of the project to build the new museum of Instituto Moreira Salles in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Marcelo also has studied music, has composed pieces for piano, cello and flute and has built a big variety of strings instruments. He has combined different artistic skills such as drawing, painting, origami and watercolor, to deliver lectures around the topic of bringing art to the life of people as a natural and important element. Marcelo received his Architecture BA from Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, and Tu / e Eindhoven, Holland with complementary courses from the Université Paris Sorbonne. He graduated from the Rudolf Steiner Waldorf School of Sao Paulo, where he had contact with a very different perspective about pedagogy and the importance of art in the learning process. As an architect worked in offices as Marcelo Suzuki, MMBB, Barbosa & Corbucci in Sao Paulo and Archi5 in Paris.

Tiago Mitraud is a Product Manager at Fundação Estudar where is

responsible for the leadership development programs of the institution, aimed at young people with high potential of transformation. Graduated in Business Administration from Universidade Federal do Paraná, Tiago held various leadership positions in his career, from the Presidency of the Student Council of his school to the Presidency of Brasil Júnior, the Brazilian Confederation of Junior Enterprises. On occasion, he had the opportunity to work for more than 7,000 students and entrepreneurs and discovered his vocation: act in mobilizing and building networks of people who have the potential to transform the world.


Paulo Egydio Setúbal graduated in Industrial Engineering at Escola

Politécnica da USP, where his graduation paper won a nomination as one of the best papers of his year. He is also a focused sportsman, a committed member of his family enterprise and an investment banking analyst. In the sport, he had trained alpine skiing for more than 10 years, shaping his personality with determination and experience of representing a country in several important global level alpine skiing competitions. He also reached another personal goal: to climb a mountain – Kilimanjaro, another life changing experience. As a member of a family controlled enterprise with high visibility in the banking, industrial and social sectors of Brazil, he has been participating, over the last 4 years, in the formation committee, dedicated to support the family next generation development. To enhance his knowledge and leadership skills he enrolled various courses and workshops and participated in different young leadership groups: GBM (Geração Brasil Melhor) and New Leaders Committee of Comunitas. He is currently working as an investment banking analyst at Credit-Suisse. In his current position, his is responsible for analyzing M&A and equity issuance, exposing him to a huge volume of information of diverse sectors of the economy, contributing to develop the expertise to become a successful entrepreneur.
