Diabetes Research That Inevitably Helps Future Sufferers There are unfortunately more than 25 million Americans with diabetes. Basically, a disease that there is no cure for effects over 8% of the population in the US alone. Research continues to move forward in leaps and bounds, however, not only in the search for a cure but in expanding the available choices for diabetes treatment. Whether a person has type 1 diabetes (requiring insulin; formerly referred to as childhood or juvenile-onset diabetes) or type 2 (also known as adult-onset) diabetes, there are existing treatment methods which can indefinitely allow a person to lead a fairly normal life, and new treatments are presently under development. Diabetes isn't really a single disease, but actually a handful of different diseases all sharing the characteristic of high levels of blood glucose caused by a fault in the body's faculty for generating and/or using insulin. The ultimate mission is to keep the glucose levels down but not too low when addressing these underlying bodily effects. Type 1 diabetes can only be treated with insulin injections, but also benefits greatly from regular exercise and a mindful healthy diet. For type 2 diabetes, if caught early it can be controlled with a healthy diet which includes lots of exercise. If those measures fail, there are oral medications that can still help, but if those should also fail to stem the tide of the ailment, insulin may wind up being necessary. It must be noted that treatments options could cause adverse side effects and having to take insulin for severe diabetics can be expensive in addition to annoying for the most part. This is why there's a continuous search for successful alternatives that are cheaper and easier for patients to control while still enjoying their regular lives. Because it is important to be able to tailor diabetes treatment to the individual, there are several possibilities which is very good news for the diabetic population. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive ailment after all, meaning it changes as time goes by, and so one treatment one day might not be effective forever. With the variety of new drugs being used to manage type 2 diabetes today, doctors can prescribe different levels of several drugs at a time and keep that balance shifting to keep up with the changing demands of a patient's condition. Combined drug therapies have become increasingly common nowadays particularly for cases of type 2 diabetes, although researchers are also zeroing in on some key improvements in treatment for people with Type 1 diabetes also. One specifically promising treatment in the research phase right now involves the inter-species transplantation of insulin-producing islet cells. This treatment if successful in future research could give a limitless production of insulin for those who cannot produce insulin effectively themselves. Animals are currently being tested through the research and have not been tested on humans as of yet. There are 347 million people around the globe that are living with diabetes according to the World Health Organization. This persistent condition can be a death sentence, especially in poor countries all over the world. For type 2 diabetes, straightforward preventive measures of diet and exercise can go a long way in stemming this tide, however in areas where resources are limited, this can be a difficult message to propagate. With medical trials always being conducted and many fund raising efforts aiding the cause diabetes treatment solutions have come a long way and continue to improve. Sunrise Medical Research
