Programme Notes POULNER WIND GROUp, RINGWOOD

ST. DAVID'S GIRLS' CHOIR, WREXHAM

Musical Director: Rachel Lewington Age range of performers: 10-19 years Riffs Andrew ChalIinger Three into Five Brian Bonsor Poulner Wind Group is a specialist recorder ensemble founded in 1975. The present group has sixteen members who attend ten different teaching establishments. The strength of the group is based on each member having a high individual standard, with festivals, competitions and examinations playing an important part in maintaining this standard. Membership is by invitation. The repertoire is large and wide-ranging but the group specialise in twentieth-century music with Staeps, Leenhouts, Britten, Part and Geysen in rehearsal at the moment. 1989 marks a special year for the Poulner Wind Group with three invitations to the South Bank in July for the National Festival of Music for Youth where they gained two Outstanding Performance Awards and the opportunity to perform at the Schools Prom.

David's Girls' Choir has enjoyed considerable success in competitions and concerts throughout Britain and abroad since its inception in 1972. Under their conductor, Jean Stanley-Jones, they have achieved numerous first prizes at prestigious festivals such as the UangoUen International Eisteddfod, where they came first three times in five years; The Montreux International Choral Festival in Switzerland; BBC Welsh School Choir of the Year, where they came first two years running in 1988路and 1989. The choir were also runners-up in this year's BBC2 Sainsbury's Choir of the Year Competition and more recently gained an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Choral Competition. As well as being invited to sing in concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and SI. David's Hall, Cardiff, the choir also makes regular television and radio appearances. The programme is intended to portray the versatility of the choir with items ranging from the brilliant, technically demanding 'God's Blacksmith' by KodaIy, to the beautifully haunting legato melodies of Cesar Franck's 'Panis Angelicus' and finally the teasing Gypsy rhythms of Geoffry Russell-Smith's 'Wedding Ring'.

ST. PAUL'S AND ALL HALLOWS JUNIOR SCHOOL STEELBAND, LONDON Conductor: Clyde Diaz Age range of performers: 10-12 years Selection from The Student Prince S. Romberg & D. Donnelly If I Fell Lennon & McCartney Quando, Quando M. C. Diaz St. Paul's and All Hallows Junior School Steelband has been established for approximately fifteen years. Their tutor Clyde Diaz spends two hours a week rehearsing the band. The children also practise every break-time on their own, to familiarise themselves with the tunes and instruments. Each year Mr Diaz also selects a number of third year children and these pupils are 'traine,d up' to take the places of the performers who leave the school at the age of eleven. The band took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth at the South Bank during July and they have also performed at the Coventry Steelband f-estival. The children also perfo rm at functions held by the local churches, schools, old people's homes, fairs and other activities in the community.
