Our Mission The Museum of New Mexico Foundation supports the Museum of New Mexico system through fund development for exhibitions and education programs, financial management, retail, licensing and advocacy.

Dear Members, The Museum of New Mexico Foundation has a proud history of conducting special campaigns to advance the four state museums we support in Santa Fe. Our “pre-history” also includes three museum projects that were privately funded, in part or whole, beginning with the New Mexico Museum of Art more than 100 years ago. In 1915, attorney Frank Springer and other community leaders raised $30,000 to build the museum, then called the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. Their contributions were matched by the State of New Mexico and the museum opened two years later in November 1917.

A few years after that, John D. Rockefeller Jr. came to town and found inspiration in New Mexico’s rich cultural heritage. This led him to fund the construction of the Laboratory of Anthropology, which opened in 1925 and is now part of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on Museum Hill. Then came Florence Dibell Bartlett, who moved to Santa Fe from Chicago. She was similarly inspired to build the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill, which opened in 1953.

Our feature story, beginning on page 3, notes some of the campaigns led by the Foundation since its founding in 1962. More importantly, it explores the three special campaigns the Foundation is currently conducting on behalf of our state museum system.

Here’s what we’re raising in private funding: • $12.5 million to expand the New Mexico Museum of Art into the new Vladem Contemporary in the Railyard Arts District • $1.3 million to renovate and renew Here, Now and Always, the core permanent exhibition at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture • $1 million to celebrate Alexander Girard’s extraordinary legacy as a designer and folk art collector at the Museum of International Folk Art Additionally, a fourth campaign—benefiting the Palace of Governors, New Mexico History Museum, and New Mexico Historic Sites and properties—is being planned (pending Foundation board approval) with a January 12, 2019 launch at Albuquerque’s Montezuma Ball.

Imagine this: An empty lot at the corner of Lincoln and Palace avenues in downtown Santa Fe instead of the landmark New Mexico Museum of Art. Or this: Museum Hill with no Museum of Indian Arts and Culture or Museum of International Folk Art to connect Southwest indigenous and international cultures across Milner Plaza.

If you could imagine 13 fewer cultural institutions to illuminate the historic and artistic milestones of New Mexico and the world—you would be imagining no Museum of New Mexico.

Or, even more mindboggling, this: No Palace of the Governors, no New Mexico History Museum, no New Mexico Historic Sites—places that represent, document and remember centuries of New Mexico history.

Thankfully, like thousands of donors and other devotees whose support has sustained these institutions since the Museum of New Mexico’s founding in 1909, you have imagined more.

This fall, you will have opportunities to take your support even further as the Museum of New Mexico Foundation marks a new milestone in its 56-year public-private partnership with the State of New Mexico. For the first time ever, the Foundation is going beyond its primary function of supporting exhibitions and programming at its partner institutions to simultaneously oversee four special campaigns—all currently in various phases of progress or planning. Together, these one-of-a-kind initiatives underscore the importance of private philanthropy in both sustaining and moving our museums and historic sites and properties forward.

“Already, members and donors are rising to the occasion to go beyond their annual support and play a vital role in continuing to build the museum system,” says Foundation President/CEO Jamie Clements. “By elevating our physical spaces to be the best they can be, donors are elevating our cultural stature in the world.”

Campaign Fever The Foundation’s fall campaign fever is designed to fund a range of capital expansions and programming advances across the museum system. Each campaign is replete with special naming opportunities that recognize donors at every level of giving. The

campaigns (which are detailed in the division sections in the following pages) include: Here, Now and Always Renewal and Renovation: Museum of Indian Arts and Culture—Launched in 2016, this overwhelmingly successful campaign to renew and renovate the core permanent exhibition at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is in its final phase—only $50,000 short of its $1.3 million private funding goal. The Foundation is now reaching out to donors wishing to sponsor exhibition artifacts, videos, display cases or benches. All told, the private support will revitalize Here, Now and Always, a pioneering exhibition whose inclusive approach to the interpretation of Southwest Native cultures created a new model for museum exhibitions and audiences—one that continues to inform the project today.

The Girard Campaign: Museum of International Folk Art—This campaign aims to generate $1 million to fund three significant initiatives that explore the genius of Alexander Girard, whose prolific career in modern and textile design was coupled with, and informed by, his passion for collecting folk art. In 2019, the museum will showcase Girard’s legacy as designer-collector with campaign support that includes $500,000 to fund essential improvements to

also addresses a dire need to grow the museum’s exhibition and collections capacity, particularly in the area of contemporary art, an ever-more relevant point of entry for today’s museum visitors. Now approaching $10 million in gifts and pledges, the campaign is appealing to donors who give $1,000 or more. These donors will be permanently recognized in the Vladem Contemporary lobby and will receive complimentary one-year membership—and exclusive benefits—in The Circles, the Foundation’s premier membership group.

Girard’s iconic Multiple Visions: A Common Bond exhibition at the museum; $375,000 to host a Vitra Design Museum traveling exhibition focusing on Girard’s design; and $125,000 to fund a comprehensive publication that documents Girard’s life as a folk art collector and a mid-century modernist. By August, when the campaign was formally launched, donors had stepped up with more than $250,000 in cash and pledges, adding their names to upgrade select areas of the Girard Wing exhibition.

The Centennial Campaign: New Mexico Museum of Art—This $12.5 million campaign offers abundant opportunities for donors who wish to help expand the New Mexico Museum of Art into the Vladem Contemporary in the Santa Fe Railyard Arts District. The campaign honors the museum’s century of service as a community-centered venue for education and appreciation of the art of New Mexico and the world. It

Campaign for New Mexico History: New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors/New Mexico Historic Sites—Scheduled to launch in early 2019 (pending Foundation board approval), this $10 million campaign will connect private donors statewide to the heart of New Mexico history via the institutions that represent and remember that history. The campaign is envisioned as a publicprivate partnership to expand museum education programs statewide and to preserve now-endangered historic sites and properties where history happened.

The three-year campaign will target donors in key areas across New Mexico, including Santa Fe, Albuquerque/Bernalillo/Rio Rancho, Las Cruces/Mesilla, Lincoln County, Fort Sumner, Roswell, Clovis, Silver City and beyond. Donors who give $10,000 and above will receive recognition in distinctive areas of the History Museum or at any of eight historic sites and properties. In addition, for the first time ever, the 15 rooms in the Palace of the Governors will feature 50-year naming opportunities.

Leveraging A History of State Support Each of these campaigns brings both public and private funding to their respective projects, demonstrating what New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Secretary Veronica Gonzales describes as “a lively and creative synergy to a public-private partnership that has moved the cultural landscape of New Mexico to new and exciting heights.”

“State funding is the bedrock upon which the museums and historic sites operate their institutions,” Gonzales continues. “This core funding allows them to achieve national accreditation, which attracts highly-regarded curatorial staff, scholars, important loans from other institutions and more. The Foundation leverages the public attention to engage private donors who support the expansion of exhibitions, educational programming and scholarly research.”

On occasion, the reverse is true, in cases where private sector contributions encourage state funding. A prime example is the Centennial Campaign for the New Mexico Museum of Art, in

which $12.5 million in private support is anticipated to leverage $3 to $4 million in state capital outlay funding to complete the Vladem Contemporary building project.

While public-private collaborations have been in play throughout the Museum of New Mexico’s 109-year history, the current campaigns build on the success of other groundbreaking projects led by the Foundation since its inception in 1962. Among the highlights: 1972–73: The Foundation secured $285,000 in state funds to finance the first phase of a planned Museum of New Mexico expansion which, among other things, included expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts (today’s New Mexico Museum of Art). The Foundation leveraged the state funding with a private gift from the Goodwin family to fund the creation of the museum’s Goodwin Gallery.

1987–1997: The new Museum of Indian Arts and Culture opened after a state appropriation of $2.7 million funded its creation, though sufficient exhibitions and collections space was lacking. The Foundation leveraged the state funds with a $500,000 gift from Nancy and Richard Bloch, who designated the 21,0000-square-foot Amy Rose Bloch Wing in memory of their daughter. The wing, which opened in 1997, provided space for the museum’s groundbreaking permanent exhibition Here, Now and Always.

2000–2001: Charles and Edwina Milner gave the Foundation a $500,000 lead gift to launch a campaign to transform a dusty parking lot between the Museum of International Folk Art and Museum of Indian Arts and Culture to a vibrant community space of gardens, a labyrinth, outdoor activity areas, a restaurant and more. Other private donors followed their lead to create Milner Plaza in 2001, now one of the city’s premier cultural destinations.

2005–2007: The Foundation launched “Shape the Future,” a major capital and endowment campaign to support various Museum of New Mexico projects, including exhibition funding for the New Mexico History Museum. The campaign raised $25 million in cash and promised bequests. Of this, $7 million was added to a total of $25 million in state and federal funding to build the History Museum. Over 1,400 private donors contributed $100 to $1 million to complete the campaign.

Imagining the Future It’s hard to imagine how New Mexico’s cultural landscape would look like if not for the visionary donors who gave to these past campaigns. Indeed, the history speaks for itself, says New Mexico State Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth, a longtime legislative advocate.

“The unique public-private partnership that funds these institutions allows us to preserve and celebrate the art, history and culture that make our state so special,” says Sen. Wirth, who places the Museum of New Mexico among the state’s “crown jewels.”

New Mexico Regent and longtime Foundation trustee Bruce Larsen is another believer in the power of the private sector in sustaining our cultural institutions.

“The Foundation and the private sector are taking up more responsibility, funding more projects,” says Larsen. “This is enabling the museums and historic sites to do more things.”

The Final Sprint Putting Your Name on Art Consider this the art of fund-raising: Step one, reach out to people who possess both the deep pockets and big hearts to bring the seemingly impossible into reach.

Step two, ask people who may not have the means to name an entire building to instead sponsor a room.

Step three, invite everyone to help out however they can.

For the New Mexico Museum of Art’s contemporary art annex, funded through the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s Centennial Campaign, step one was accomplished the day that Bob and Ellen Vladem donated $4 million toward turning the longneglected Halpin Building into a jewel of the Santa Fe Railyard. The future Vladem Contemporary then began attracting donors to naming opportunities within its walls—a welcome center, office, café, even an elevator have all been reserved. (See sidebar for additional building naming opportunities.)

This fall, the Centennial Campaign hits its final stretch with a new $1,000 sponsorship opportunity at the Vladem Contemporary, appealing first to Foundation members. A future third wave of the naming campaign will appeal to the general public. This will focus on courtyard bricks or a similar effort to be developed by the Foundation, the Museum of Art and the Vladem Contemporary architects, DNCA Architects and Studio GP.

“We’re giving everyone a chance to be permanently recognized at the Vladem, to add your name to the building,” Foundation President/CEO Jamie Clements says.

Mary Kershaw, director of the Museum of Art, considers that many-hands approach to neatly mirror what Vladem Contemporary aspires to be.

“Art can be somewhat intimidating, but contemporary art, for people who don’t know it, can be very intimidating,” she says. “Getting people into the building is such an important thing. Everyone should feel welcome here.”

The welcome effect will be achieved by the architects’ remarkable approach to redesigning a 1930s warehouse into a light-filled wanderer’s delight. After removing the building’s two later additions on the north and south ends, they’ll craft a two-story-high bridge that reaches across the top and adds space for offices, a gallery, artist studios and an education area. One courtyard will perch atop the space; another on the ground floor will greet riders as they step off the New Mexico Rail Runner. Entry points at the north and south ends will allow people to pass through the lobby and, ideally, become enchanted enough by the artworks they see there to stay longer.

Such enticements, along with “green” designs that will ultimately save money, increased the original fund-raising goal from $10 million to $12.5 million.

Of that, Clements anticipates the public campaign will generate $500,000. “There is such excitement about this project—and an understanding that if we didn’t do it, our Museum of Art would lose its relevance,” he says.

For its 1917 debut, the Museum of Art was supported by private philanthropists and represented the cutting edge in modern art. Its architectural design helped give birth to Santa Fe Style, and its immediate cachet as a forward-thinking institution drew artists, tourists and entrepreneurs to town. Clements sees parallels between that and the Vladem Contemporary. Where the downtown Museum of Art lacks the kind of space required to exhibit some pieces of contemporary art, the new annex will have space to fill. Where the Museum of Art once put Santa Fe on the map, the Vladem Contemporary will help further ignite the burgeoning Santa Fe Railyard Arts District.

“What was a contemporary art museum in 1917 is now a showcase for our historic collection,” Clements says.

“Are we addressing artwork and art-making of today?

Our new building will allow us to do that. It’s important on many levels, and everyone has the opportunity to participate.”

Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/ Laboratory of Anthropology Name Your Exhibition Support The renewal of Here, Now and Always still holds many significant opportunities to add your name to these vital areas of support: Survival and Resilience $100,000 The last remaining exhibition section awaiting sponsorship, this area focuses on the theme of Native sovereignty, exploring issues ranging from the Pueblo Revolt to Native boarding schools, religion, prisons, politics and more.

Survival and Resilience Interactive/Video $25,000 An interactive video station will provide an immersive and engaging exploration of the key themes in the Survival and Resilience exhibition section, enabling deeper visitor engagement with new and archival materials.

Display Case $15,000 The replacement of outdated and inaccessible exhibition display cases will allow for enhanced protection of exhibition objects and will enable curators to more easily rotate items and change displays to reflect current events.

Hands Across the Past Donors Carry Artifacts into the Present It might be just another child’s blanket—until you pause, look closer, and listen for the voice of the past.

Woven around 1870 with an expert’s hand—a parent? a granny? an auntie?—the blanket features a meander of diagonal and cross shapes in black, white and green on a field of red. The designs reference migration patterns and, given its age, curators at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture think that the child who wore it was one of the Navajo people who experienced the Long Walk to Bosque Redondo.

Did that child survive? Did a family return to Dinetah and thrive?

This palpable evidence of a life once lived answers and raises questions simultaneously—and that’s just one of the experiences that visitors will encounter at the museum’s renewed Here, Now and Always exhibition.

The exhibition re-do includes $1.3 million in Museum of New Mexico Foundation private fundraising. Generous donors have given $100,000 apiece to add their names to seven of the exhibition’s eight sections. Jamie Clements, president/CEO of the Foundation, hopes that the last section, Survival and Resilience, will be adopted by a Native American community or individual. Other naming opportunities include media stations and benches within the exhibition spaces.

The Foundation also recently expanded the giving range to include opportunities to sponsor exceptional artifacts from throughout the exhibition. Together these appealing options—at $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000 giving levels—will raise a total of $50,000. The Navajo child’s blanket is but one of them.

Maxine McBrinn, the museum’s curator of archaeology, points to another sponsorship opportunity, a series of Mesa Verde mugs—early examples of a Chacoan jar or vase. One in particular delights her.

“This jar was one that proved that chocolate was traded into the Southwest from Mesoamerica in the first study conducted by the University of New Mexico’s Patricia Crown,” McBrinn says. “Mesa Verde mugs have always caught the public’s imagination. Each one is unique, and it’s easy to imagine people having their own special drinking cup. Plus, they’re beautiful!”

A third artifact available for sponsorship—a circa 1930 Tohono O’odham basketry hat—is highlighted by ethnology curator Tony Chavarria, who’s overseeing the Here, Now and Always overhaul. It is an example of a traditional craft morphing into a commercial product—while retaining a skillful standard.

“Some may see it as a tourist piece,” Chavarria says, “yet every aspect of this hat shows the care and talents of an accomplished weaver. The materials that make up this hat underwent the same ceremonial and physical processes that go into O’odham basketry.”

Chavarria hopes that revealing these kinds of details about exhibition artifacts will impact visitors in the same eye-opening way that the original exhibition did when it opened in 1997.

Back then, curators, historians and archivists were the primary storytellers in most exhibitions in the greater museum world. But the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture pioneered a method of including the voices of the people represented in the exhibition—both in its planning and its staging. It’s an approach that museums nationwide have since embraced.

“Here, Now and Always was innovative and influential,” Chavarria says. “It led to the recognition that experts are not always found in curatorial offices, but also in the communities that created the objects in museum collections.”

Clements recalls the first time he walked through the exhibition with museum director Della Warrior. “We both acknowledged that this 20-year-old exhibition

was outdated and in dire need of substantial updating,” he says. From new scholarship to new exhibition tools and audience engagement techniques, the potential for advancing knowledge and enhancing the visitor experience fired a desire to fund the renewal.

Chavarria, who worked on the original Here, Now and Always, vows that its new iteration, “will be the jumping-off point for visitors to learn about the Native peoples of the Southwest. For locals and faraway visitors, we want this to be where they can see incredible art and cultural objects from all time periods—and learn how Native people live today.”

Rediscovering Alexander Girard Focusing on a Master of 20th-Century Design When Alexander Girard moved to Santa Fe in 1953, he may well have expected the Southwest to influence his textile and interior design ethos as well as his folk art collecting habits. It’s unlikely, though, that he knew just how much he would change Santa Fe. An upcoming exhibition, groundbreaking book and renovations to the Museum of International Folk Art’s Girard Wing will all take note of that two-way street. The recent launch of the $1 million Girard Campaign to fund these initiatives is asking Museum of New Mexico Foundation donors to take note, too.

“Along with our founder, Florence Dibell Bartlett, and Lloyd Cotsen, Alexander Girard was one of the museum’s greatest benefactors with his gift of some 100,000 folk art objects and his design of the Girard Wing,” says folk art museum director Khristaan Villela.

Today, the Girard Wing remains one of the master’s last extant examples of a designed environment. But updates are needed to refresh the physical space, provide essential care of objects on display and increase audience engagement. The Girard Campaign will fund a five-year plan of $500,000 worth of improvements that will faithfully represent Girard’s original vision and design. (See sidebar for select naming opportunities.)

Girard’s influence was felt far beyond Museum Hill. In May 2019, the museum unveils Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe, organized by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. The folk art museum hosts the final leg of the exhibition after it travels to the Cranbrook Institute Art Museum in Michigan and the Hanggaram Art Museum in South Korea, The Girard Campaign will fund the costs of importing and mounting the show in Santa Fe—a total of $375,000.

The folk art museum loaned about 300 pieces to the exhibition, which also includes Girard’s restaurant and residential designs, textiles and furniture. For those who just can’t wait to see which 300 pieces became part of A Designer’s Universe, here’s a spoiler alert: They won’t be shown in Santa Fe. “Hey,” Villela says, laughing, “We have 10,000 on display in the Girard Wing!”

Meanwhile, Laura Addison, the museum’s curator of European and American collections, is working on The Essential Alexander Girard to accompany the exhibition. This anthology of essays, including some never-before-published, explores how Girard’s dual roles as a folk art

collector and mid-century modernist designer intersected. The $125,000 effort represents the third initiative in the Girard Campaign and an opportunity for the project’s funder to be listed in the book’s dedication.

“Design is part of the museum’s DNA,” Villela often says, and the 2019 projects are intended to underscore Girard’s design connection. Indeed, for visitors who think that Girard is all about folk art, A Designer’s Universe will open their eyes to the seismic shifts he caused in the design world.

“It’s the first retrospective of his design work,” Addison says. “I’ll be putting on display some of the unique objects made by Girard that we have in the collection, as well as side-by-side examples of some of his folk art collection paired with his textile designs, to demonstrate those influences.”

As a designer, Girard favored a whimsical mashup of color, abstraction and inspirations from folk art.

Throughout his career, he worked alongside 20th-century giants like Jack Lenore Larsen, George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, Andy Warhol, and Charles and Ray Eames, and his work was featured in exhibitions at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Girard’s first effort at the folk art museum was curating an exhibition of nativity scenes in 1961. In 1978, he and his wife, Susan, donated 100,000 folk art pieces to the museum, and in 1981, he designed the Girard Wing, which has celebrated pieces from his collection ever since.

“His guiding principle, ‘All the world is hometown,’ valued folk art for the connections it builds within and between cultures,” Addison says. “The museum continues to champion folk art and living traditions as active agents of building awareness and community— something that gains even more relevance in increasingly fraught times. Folk art is an ambassador.”

New Mexico History Museum Palace of the Governors A Clean Slate Palace Prepares for a Dramatic Makeover What would you do with an entirely empty Palace of the Governors? Ponder this: room upon adobewalled room, polished wood floors and ceiling vigas fatter than anything you can buy today. And this: new heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems that greatly expand the kinds of artifacts you can show there.

That question tantalized New Mexico History Museum staff as they prepared to pack up the Palace’s artifacts in late summer, then wait for installation of modern HVAC technology. In staff meeting after staff meeting, they offered ideas. How could they honor the nation’s oldest continuously occupied government building—and celebrate what’s new about it?

Just like history, the answer is complex and compelling. For one thing, rooms will now carry the names of major donors, a first since the Palace became the state’s original museum in 1909. Up to 15 rooms will be available for naming rights for a 50-year period.

“What an honor it will be for our major donors to be recognized in the Palace of the Governors ” says Museum of New Mexico Foundation President/CEO Jamie Clements. “This has never been done in the Palace’s 400-year history.

The rooms are part of a larger $10 million Campaign for New Mexico History that could soon spread statewide wings to benefit the Palace, New Mexico History Museum and New Mexico Historic Sites (pending Foundation board approval). The Palace

will receive $4 million and the History Museum $1 million. (See page 16 for Historic Sites’ plans.)

With donors’ help, museum staff plan to unveil a 2019 exhibition unlike anything the Palace has ever shown. Andrew Wulf, director of the New Mexico History Museum and Palace of the Governors, is working with contemporary Native American artists to curate stories—and create new pieces inspired by them. These will speak to Native American experiences that occurred between these walls, from the Spanish Colonial era to the Pueblo Revolt, through the reconquest and up to the present.

“The Palace is a site of conscience,” Wulf says. “It’s a place where some of the most sensitive Native American stories happened. The whole building will be one exhibit. This exhibition will kick off several years of exhibitions and programs that address countless underrepresented stories that must be shared through our programs. Funding will support these and other initiatives toward our goal of telling New Mexico history anew, year in, year out.”

The HVAC installation and other improvements, such as the new stucco applied in recent years, is paid for

with State of New Mexico funds. The Campaign for New Mexico History will support new exhibitions and public programs.

Eventually, Wulf says, a long-term exhibition will be developed to tell the story of the building itself. Other changes include moving the Segesser Hides from the Palace to the History Museum for expanded interpretation, along with deeper storytelling around both world wars in the museum’s Telling New Mexico exhibition. Plans for the new Makerspace and Learning Lab within the museum are coursing along, and enhanced partnerships with the historic sites are intended to amplify site programs statewide.

For now, though, it’s that big empty space that calls to supporters of history. “Our mission—to share New Mexico’s history to recognize, strengthen and empower the communities we serve—pushes us to take on challenging historical subject matter and contemporary needs,” Wulf says. “We stand on the shoulders of the giants who did great things for this institution, and we’re going to continue creating the kind of place where New Mexicans and all others find engagement and meaning.”

New Mexico Historic Sites Blast from the Past Historic Sites Leap into the Future In under two years, change has swept across the New Mexico Historic Sites.

A new exhibition design at Fort Sumner/Bosque Redondo Memorial. Spine-tingling after-dark tours at Lincoln and Fort Stanton. An award-winning archaeological dig at Coronado.

Historic Sites director Patrick Moore aims to keep the action moving.

“This summer, for the first time ever,” Moore says, “the hospital at Fort Stanton will be open. It was the

first federal tuberculosis hospital in the nation.

That’s a huge story of why thousands of people came to New Mexico—and another place to experience history where it happened.”

Diving into the past matters. Consider the Award of Merit given to Coronado Historic Site this summer by the prestigious American Association for State and Local History. The award lauds an archaeological dig that opened the eyes of site staff to new interpretations of Kuaua Pueblo’s importance and its onetime size. The updated information proved so popular with site visitors that Jemez Historic Site adopted the idea and began a dig of its own in August.

The sites are experimenting with such changes in order to examine history in ways that engage people of all backgrounds—a task that, Moore acknowledges, wasn’t always within their grasp.

“Historic sites were a forgotten stepchild for a long time,” he says. “I remember visiting Fort Selden Historic Site when I was a grad student in the late 1980s and thinking, ‘This exhibit is really old.’ And it’s the same exhibit today!”

The Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s $10 million Campaign for New Mexico History will change that (pending Foundation board approval).

It earmarks $5 million for capital and programming needs at the six historic sites and two historic properties. This will be divided equally among the eight entities—producing $625,000 for each. (The campaign also provides $5 million for the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors; see page 14.)

“We’ve never fund-raised statewide,” he says. “In other states, history projects are often less funded than arts and culture projects. In New Mexico, it could be the opposite, because we have such a rich history. I hear it when I visit historic sites. The Friends groups are so passionate about their communities and the history associated with them.”

The Foundation will ask economic-development boosters in communities near the sites to take part, too. The tourism potential of historic sites merits their participation, which becomes even more important during years when a lack of snowfall decreases skier visits or fire dangers close public lands.

The appeal stresses a commitment by historic sites staff to adopt 21st-century storytelling techniques and

programs. That imperative has already led to coming transformations at the Bosque Redondo Memorial, where technological improvements and the voices of contemporary Navajos and Mescalero Apaches have come together in a new exhibition that explores a somber history of the site that holds lessons for today.

You can expect similar transformations at all the sites, Moore promises, capitalizing on a time when stories from the past carry modern-day clout.

“The complexities of New Mexico history are different than any other state in the Union,” Moore says.

“Nowhere else do you find such an ingrained and deeply rooted history, with issues of power, resistance and questions of who did what. We want to foster productive conversations that help everybody understand one another and make the future better.”

Office of Archaeological Studies Learning Ancient Technologies Just Don’t Call Them ‘Primitive’ New Mexico’s history encompasses more than 12,000 years of innovation in technologies—from the bowand-arrow, to pottery, to the atomic bomb. The changes are cumulative and adaptive, solving problems that people faced in their daily lives, allowing communities to reproduce and thrive, and occasionally contributing to future unforeseen problems.

Nearly all archaeological analyses are built around reconstructing these technologies. Two aspects of reconstruction—the hands-on and the experimental—play a central role in the award-winning education programs of the Office of Archaeological Studies. Both have a component of fun that enriches usually dry academic perspectives. The hands-on aspect of experimentation also is a perfect way of communicating a sense of wonder about, and respect for, the skill and cleverness of ancestral peoples—proving that ancient technologies are far from primitive.

Demonstrations of ancestral technologies— including flintknapping, atlatl-and-spear, bow-andarrow, yucca textiles, sumac basketry, fire making, and pottery production—are important components of the office’s statewide education programs. On Saturday, October 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public and Foundation members can experience ancient technologies during Archaeology Day at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology.

The demonstrations include the use of a tump band or tump line, which ancient Southwesterners and most traditional peoples in the world today use to suspend loads comfortably from their foreheads.

Visitors will also learn about technologies whose practice has lapsed. For example, the Hutchinson Stopper was patented in 1879 and became a common method of closing refillable soda bottles. Popularity

waned with the introduction of the disposable crown cap, and by World War I, Hutchinson stoppers disappeared from use. Contributing to the “pop” in soda pop, the stoppers are valuable for dating historic archaeological sites.

“Archaeology Day is a chance to unleash your inner child, or drag along a real child, for a unique experience,” says Office of Archaeological Studies Director Eric Blinman. “I’m confident that we can transform something old into something new for everyone.”

Fabric Collection Pays Homage to Alexander Girard Museum of International Folk Art benefactor Alexander Girard’s global explorations and experiences as a textile designer and folk art collector revolved around his focused desire to understand the context in which an object or a place expresses one’s identity.

He was acutely aware of how a maker’s identity is embedded in the object that he or she creates, imparting complex emotional and cultural references as well as a sense of place.

In honor of Girard’s global journey of discovery, Mayer Fabrics unveils “Wonderlust,” a new collection created in collaboration with the Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and Sunbrella. Mayer Fabrics designer Kimberle Frost worked with manufacturer Sunbrella to adapt vibrant and engaging patterns from the folk art and textiles that Girard loved and collected to a sevenpiece fabric collection that brings the warmth and color of global folk art to indoor and outdoor spaces.

“We are thrilled to see such a joyful and thoughtful interpretation of the folk art and textiles from our museums,” says Pamela Kelly, Museum of New Mexico Foundation vice president of licensing and brand management.

Wonderlust patterns are inspired by personal, ceremonial and celebratory objects and textiles from the collections at the Museum of International Folk Art and the Pueblo pottery collection at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. Frost’s designs focus on textiles and objects from many of the same places that Girard visited, such as India, Mexico, Guatemala and the Netherlands, as well as the Pueblo and Hispanic villages around Girard’s Santa Fe home.

Frost and Sunbrella designer Tracy Greene extracted elements from each source object to translate its essential expression into fun, whimsical and personable patterns and textures. The collection comes in 44 rich colorways, from lively saturated tones to soothing neutrals.

“The goal was not to reproduce the actual design,” Frost says, “but to evolve it to find the essential element of the object, tell the story of its journey, and give it new life through pattern and color.”

Noche de Muertos Returns!

Last November, the Museum of International Folk Art’s atrium came alive with a spirited celebration when, after a decadelong hiatus, the museum’s annual Day of the Dead gala was reincarnated as Noche de Muertos.

More than 200 guests, many with painted calaverastyle faces, flaunted fabulous Mexico-inspired costumes and enjoyed a dinner conceived by James Beard Award nominee Chef Martín Rios. A handcarved and painted ofrenda created for the event by pioneering New Mexican Chicano artist Luis Tapia, who served as honorary Noche co-chair with actress Ali MacGraw, was the auction highlight. The generous winning bidder donated the artwork to the museum for its permanent collection.

Tried & True Foundation Receives Piñon Award Congratulations to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, which will be awarded the Santa Fe Community Foundation’s 2018 Tried & True Piñon Award at its October 8 ceremony at La Fonda on the Plaza.

Here, Now and Always receives Major National Award The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has given the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Here, Now and Always renewal and renovation project a major nod of approval, awarding the project an implementation grant of $460,000—the only NEH grant awarded in all of New Mexico during this funding cycle.

The NEH awarded a total $43.1 million for 218 humanities projects across the country. Here, Now and Always was honored in the Public Humanities Projects category, which supports museum exhibitions, community discussion programs and interpretations of historic places that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for general audiences.

The funding will support costs of implementing the exhibition’s redesign and fabrication, plus partial costs for artifact conservation, public education, a companion publication, and marketing and public relations. The award also provides $60,000 for a two-year Position in Public Humanities to help develop and implement a community conversation series that promotes public discourse on significant issues impacting indigenous communities today.

NEH Chairman Jon Parrish Peede says this and other funded projects this cycle “strengthen and sustain the cultural life of our nation and its citizens.”

“This is major validation of this significant project to enhance the visitor experience of Here, Now and Always,” says Clements. “It honors the museum’s longtime collaboration with Southwest tribal communities on this project, an approach that has long brought national recognition to the museum for its respect for Native cultures. Congratulations!”
