While tax dollars provide the foundation for public education, many of the innovative programs, classroom grants, scholarships, and enrichment opportunities that make schools exceptional are made possible through another important partner: education foundations.

These nonprofit organizations raise private dollars to support teachers, students, and campuses, ensuring that every child has opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed beyond what traditional school budgets can provide.

aybe you’ve always thought you could make and sell those hand-painted signs. Maybe friends keep telling you that your cookies are good enough to sell, you have a knack for finding vintage treasures, or have made a stack of sketches that could become greeting cards.

And maybe you’ve also told yourself the same thing a hundred times: That would be fun, but I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Here’s the thing: You don’t have to quit your day job, rent a storefront or develop a 20-page business plan to find out whether your idea could become something more. Sometimes betting on yourself simply means giving an idea a chance.

Start With Something You Already Love The best little businesses often begin with something you already know how to do or genuinely enjoy. Think about what people already compliment you on, what you could happily spend a Saturday afternoon doing or what you find yourself making for friends and family anyway.

The goal isn't to invent the next big thing.

It's to find something that makes you think, I wonder if other people would like this, too.

Start Small — Really Small One of the biggest advantages of starting a small creative business today is that you don't have to make a huge

As you get more serious, explore online wholesale suppliers for supplies and packaging. Buying larger quantities can bring down the per-item cost, but there's no reason to buy 500 of something before you know you're going to use 500.

And don't overlook what you already have. Your first product might be hiding in that craft closet you've been meaning to organize.

Take Pictures Like a Shopper You don't need professional photography equipment to create a good product listing. A phone, natural light, and a clean background can go a long way.

For each item, you'll take several kind of photos: a clear main photo showing the entire product, close-ups that show texture or details, a photo that demonstrates size or scale, different colors or variations, if available, and the product being used or displayed, when appropriate.

Think less like the person who made the product and more like the person deciding whether to buy it.

What would you want to see before clicking "Add to Cart"?

Give Yourself a Tiny Goal Instead of saying, I'm going to start an online business, try: • I'm going to make five things.

• Then photograph them.

• List them.

• Tell a few people what you're doing.

• See what happens.

Maybe they sell immediately. Maybe they don't. Either way, you've learned something you couldn't have learned by thinking about it.

And if you discover that you love the process? Make five more.

Why Child Support Should Go Through the State Disbursement Unit

A parent who made payments directly may ultimately be able to establish that those payments should be credited toward the child-support obligation. But that may require bank records, canceled checks, payment-app histories, testimony, cooperation from the other parent, or even a court proceeding. In other words, you may find yourself spending time and money proving that you already paid money you actually owed.

The better practice is simple: read and follow your court order.

paid it.” Unfortunately, those three words may not be enough when it comes to child support in Texas.

Texas child support orders commonly

require payments to be made through the Texas State Disbursement Unit

(“SDU”). The SDU processes child-support payments and, importantly, creates an

official record of what was paid and when.

Despite what the court order says, parents sometimes choose a more convenient

route. They hand the other parent a check or cash, or send money through Zelle, Venmo, or another payment app. The

receiving parent may have received every dollar owed, but the SDU may have no record of it.

That can create a serious problem.

When payments bypass the SDU, the

official child-support payment record may reflect missed payments and an outstanding balance. The Texas Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) may then treat those amounts as arrearages, which can accrue interest and trigger enforcement actions.

The consequences of reported childsupport arrears can extend well beyond simply owing money. Depending on the circumstances, enforcement tools may include withholding income, intercepting certain tax refunds, placing liens on property or financial accounts, suspending a driver’s or professional license, and reporting delinquent child support to credit bureaus. Significant arrearages may also result in the denial or revocation of a U.S. passport, something many parents do not discover until they are preparing to travel.

Using the method required by the order provides an official payment history and can prevent unnecessary disputes about whether, when, and how much child support was paid.

F

or years, Labor Day has been billed as the unofficial end of summer.

Around here, though, summer hasn’t gotten the memo. The thermometer is still flirting with triple digits, the pool is still tempting, and we all know we’ll probably be wearing shorts well into October.

And despite the weather, it certainly

doesn’t feel like summer anymore. School has been back in session for weeks.

Friday Night Lights are already lighting up stadiums across North Texas. Dance bags, football pads, marching band rehearsals, volleyball tournaments, and color-coded family calendars have officially reclaimed the kitchen counter.

In other words, the busy season has arrived. And somehow, it’s only going to get busier.

The funny thing is, we often treat this stretch of the year like a marathon we have to sprint. We race from one commitment to the next, promising ourselves we'll slow down "after Halloween"... then "after Thanksgiving"... then "after Christmas."

Before long, it's January, and we're wondering how the last four months disappeared.

Maybe the better approach is to build in a few pauses before the pace picks up.

Labor Day is one of those rare weekends that doesn't come with a long to-do list or elaborate traditions.

There's no pressure to decorate, exchange gifts, or host the perfect gathering. It's simply a long weekend — a chance to enjoy a slower morning, linger over a cup of coffee, or spend an evening playing cards on the patio.

Sometimes, giving ourselves permission to do a little less is exactly what helps us enjoy the season ahead a little more.

Take an hour to tackle one project your future self will appreciate. Clear out the pantry before holiday baking season. Clean out the coat closet and donate the jackets the kids have already outgrown—someone else may be grateful to have them before the first cold snap arrives. Hang that hook that's been waiting in the mudroom since spring. If family photos, holiday travel, or Thanksgiving reservations are on your todo list, checking them off now will feel like a gift come November.

Then stop. Seriously.

Leave a little room in the weekend for doing...not much at all. Grill burgers. Read on the back patio after the sun finally dips below the trees. Play a board game. Take an evening walk. Sit outside with neighbors while the kids ride bikes until the porch lights come on.

Those ordinary moments have a funny way of becoming the ones we remember most.

The holidays will be here soon enough, bringing all the excitement, traditions, and joyful chaos we look forward to every year.

But before the season shifts into high gear, Labor Day quietly reminds us that there's value in an unhurried afternoon, a simple meal, and a calendar with just enough white space left to enjoy it.

or 27 years, Angie Cox has called Flower Mound home, raising four children who all graduated from Flower Mound High School. As a University of North Texas graduate, Angie now serves as an Escrow Officer at Allegiance Title, and with her husband Stewart, they own and operate Cox Cleaning LLC. Beyond her professional roles, Angie has built a reputation as a steadfast community advocate. She has served on the board of Keep Flower Mound Beautiful for 15 years, helping organize clean-up events and educating residents on recycling. A long-time member of Lewisville Noon Rotary, Angie served as club president in 2006–07 and currently acts as Grants Chair.

In that role, she implemented food pantries in ten Lewisville ISD schools to support children facing food insecurity, an accomplishment she is extremely proud of. “I’m very passionate about helping the children in our community.

“I feel it is important to be a good listener,” she added. “You never know what people are going through.”

“My mother taught me how to be a hardworking woman, how to manage time, and how to manage home with work,” she said. “But she rarely put herself first. That became one of my greatest

cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary.”

One message she is especially passionate about sharing is that

no woman succeeds alone. “Every woman needs both a mentor

and a sponsor,” she said. “A mentor guides you, challenges your thinking, and helps you grow. A sponsor believes in you when you’re not in the room, opens doors, and advocates for your success. Both are essential.”

For Manu, leadership is about much more than ambition or titles.

“Leadership is like a bouquet made up of many qualities,” she

said. “You need resilience. You need humility. Most importantly, you need thick skin. You have to learn how to accept feedback

without taking it personally, and you have to pause before react-

ing. That ability to reflect instead of simply responding can make or break your career and your business.”

Her advice to the next generation of leaders is simple but powerful — “Do your research. Find the right tribe. Surround yourself with people

who challenge you, support you, and believe in

your potential. And never stop investing in yourself. The strongest leaders are lifelong learners.”

eadership is often associated with ambition and carefully planned career paths. For Dr. Susannah O’Bara, Superintendent of Denton ISD, leadership

emerged naturally through a lifelong commitment to serving others, working hard, and always striving to make a positive impact wherever she was planted.

Dr. O’Bara began her career in Denton ISD in 1991 as a classroom teacher. Inspired by her passion for helping students

learn and grow, she quickly discovered the profound difference

educators can make in the lives of young people. “I never sought

to become a superintendent,” she said. “I simply led from where I was in each role I had the privilege to serve.”

That mindset has guided her throughout a remarkable 34-year career in education. By focusing on excellence, integrity, and service rather than titles, she earned the trust and respect of

colleagues, students, and families, ultimately leading her to the district’s top leadership position.

When asked about the women who have inspired her, Dr. O’Bara immediately points to her mother. “She taught me to always

work hard, believe in myself, and hold my head high when others might cause me to doubt myself,” she said.

Equally important is the ability to envision a better future and inspire others to work toward it together.

Outside of work, she starts each day with exercise, viewing it as

an important anchor amid the demands of leadership. She also embraces a realistic perspective on work-life balance, understanding that different seasons require different priorities.

Above all, Dr. O’Bara is most proud of her family. She is the mother of two accomplished sons, Grant and Grayson, whose achievements continue to bring her joy and pride.

As co-founder and vice president of Labeled & Loved, a nonprofit that supports mothers and caregivers of children with disabilities, she works to ensure that no family has to navigate the journey alone. She is also the founder of Therapy and Beyond, a leading provider of autism treatment and support.

Regina’s passion began more than 30 years ago, when her younger brother was diagnosed with autism. At the time, he was nonverbal and faced significant behavioral and developmental challenges. Her mother refused to accept predictions about what he would never accomplish and eventually found a professional who introduced him to behavioral therapy and sign-language communication. Not only did her brother develop verbal speech and learn to read, but he went on to attend a traditional school, graduate from high school and college, and build a successful career.

Denton County Deputies Honored with Lifesaving Award

T

he Denton County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes Deputies Gerrand Lockhart, Alan Henry, Ian Concepcion-Marquez, Shannon Roach, Tommy Cowan, Joseph Gilbert, and Sergeant Karisa Flowers for their extraordinary actions during a critical medical emergency that resulted in the successful rescue of a citizen’s life.

On the morning of March 9, 2026, while assigned to the Denton County Main Courthouse, the deputies were alerted to a citizen who had suddenly collapsed in the courthouse lobby. Upon arrival, they found the individual unresponsive, not breathing, and in immediate need of medical attention.

Without hesitation, the deputies quickly assessed the situation and began lifesaving measures. Working together as a coordinated team, they initiated CPR and

deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an effort to restore the individual’s heartbeat. Their training, teamwork, and calm response under pressure ensured that lifesaving care continued uninterrupted until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.

Mothers and sons serve together,

strengthening their bond while making a difference in their community through the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL).

For the Lantana Chapter, that commitment added up to an impressive 4,777 volunteer hours supporting 34 philanthropic organizations during the 2025-26 program year.

From preparing meals and organizing donation drives to assisting at community events and beautifying local parks, members embraced countless opportunities to make a meaningful difference. Each experience gave young men the chance to see firsthand how a few hours of their time can make someone else's day a little easier—and gave mothers and sons another opportunity to work toward something meaningful together.

“At YMSL Lantana, service is about more than giving back—it’s about building character, developing compassionate leaders, and creating lasting bonds between mothers and sons,” said Chapter President Alicia Hall. “We’re incredibly proud of our members’ dedication and the positive impact they’ve made throughout our community this year.”

Behind that number are countless Saturday mornings, evenings spent volunteering together, boxes packed, meals prepared, parks cleaned and community events supported. More importantly, those hours represent mothers and sons showing up side by side to help people in their own community.

Throughout the year, YMSL Lantana mothers and sons partnered with local nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families facing a variety of challenges. Their volunteer efforts supported organizations serving:

Homecoming Memories

A

ny Texan can tell you just how big homecoming is. From the largerthan-life football game and homecoming court to the dances, the list of homecoming traditions is endless. But one of the most iconic Southern customs is the homecoming mum.

While not exclusive to Texas, the state is well known for its massive, elaborate designs.

Designed to look like a flower, today's mums are full of braided ribbons, large bows, stuffed animals, bright colors, and just about anything else you could imagine.

The first homecoming mums can be traced back to the early 1900s, when they were nothing more than a flower pinned to a shirt with a few ribbons, and they've come a long way since.

Today, the art of making mums has become an important part of homecoming, often serving as a mother-daughter tradition.

Sabrina Rosser and Rayanne Good co-own RG Mums, one of many mum-making small businesses across the state. They are currently in their sixth homecoming season, and their business just keeps growing.

RG Mums started with two moms who loved crafting and wanted to experience making mums for their own daughters. As two Denton County natives who had simple pinned flowers at their own homecomings, they were excited to create mums for their kids.

Sabrina describes the tradition as a way for people to "showcase their personalities."

Whether it's a few ribbons braided together or a mum that ends up being bigger than its wearer, every mum is unique to the person wearing it.

From the many local small businesses to the countless people who make mums for themselves, friends, or their children, the mum-making community has certainly grown.

Sabrina and Rayanne will be the first to tell you how supportive the industry is, something they hope to continue fostering. Sabrina has been a board member of Mums-Inc.com for over two years, a community that has members all over Texas and highlights the sharing that happens between the business owners in order to keep the mum tradition alive.

Sabrina's biggest piece of advice for anyone making a mum is to embrace the fun of it."It doesn't have to be big," she said.

She also recommends starting early.

Rogers Band will highlight Western Days 2026, one of the biggest and most family-friendly celebrations of the season.

Set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26, Western Days transforms the historic

downtown into a lively playground filled

with live music on six stages, food, entertainment, and Western-themed activities that appeal to all ages.

The event spans all of Historic Old Town

Lewisville along Church and Main streets, including Wayne Ferguson Plaza and the Lewisville Grand Theater. About 20,00030,000 event-goers are expected.

Western Days 2026 runs 4-10:30 pm on

Friday and Noon-11:30 pm on Saturday.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

10 oz. noodles (ie, Udon, ramen, etc.)

1. Prepare the noodles per package instructions.

For the Sauce

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the soy sauce with the brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are completely dissolved. Set aside.

½ c. soy sauce low-sodium ½ c. dark brown sugar 2 Tbsp. rice vinegar 1 tsp. sesame oil ½ tsp. red pepper flakes (optional) 1 Tbsp. cornstarch For Stir-Frying 1 lb. ground beef (80/20 or 90/10) 1 Tbsp. fresh ginger minced 4 cloves garlic minced (about 1 Tbsp.) ¼ c. scallions plus extra for garnish 2 Tbsp. toasted sesame seeds

3. Heat your wok (or heavy skillet) over medium-high heat. Add the meat and don't break it up for a few minutes. Gently push the meat around to prevent it from sticking, but not too much; you want the meat to get a dark crust in a few spots. Then break the meat up and cook, stirring often, until no longer pink.

4. Tilt the wok to one side and remove all but about 1 tablespoon of the rendered grease. Use a large wooden spatula to push the meat to one side of the wok. Add the ginger, garlic, and most of the scallions and sauté in the grease, stirring often, for about 1 to 2 minutes. Stir the beef together with the sautéed ginger/garlic/scallions.

5. Give the prepared sauce a strong stir with your whisk and then pour it over the meat. Stir-fry until slightly thickened, usually only about 1 to 2 minutes.

6. Add the cooked noodles and toss with a couple of wooden spoons or spatulas until fully coated. Serve at once, garnished with extra scallions and toasted sesame seeds.

just getting dinner on the table feels like an accomplishment. Between work, school, sports practices, and homework, it's tempting to rely on takeout or the drive-thru.

A smarter strategy is to start with one versatile ingredient and use it in several completely different meals throughout the week. Whether it's a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store, a pound of browned ground beef, or a sheet pan full of roasted vegetables, a little planning can save time without making dinner feel repetitive.

Rotisserie chicken is the ultimate weeknight shortcut. Pick one up on your way home, pull the meat from the bones, and you're ready to make:

Brown a pound or two of ground beef at the beginning of the week, seasoning simply with salt, pepper, onion, and garlic.

From there, it's easy to transform it into:

Chicken Enchilada Bowls

Burger Bowls

Roast a large batch of vegetables at the beginning of the week — broccoli, zucchini, onions, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, or whatever is in season.

They'll become the starting point for:

Start with cooked rice, then layer on shredded chicken tossed with enchilada sauce.

Add black beans, corn, shredded cheese, avocado, pico de gallo, and a dollop of sour cream. Finish with tortilla chips and fresh cilantro for an easy Tex-Mex dinner without rolling a single tortilla.

Think cheeseburger without the bun. Layer chopped romaine with warm ground beef, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, pickles, red onion, and avocado. Drizzle with a quick burger sauce made from mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and a splash of pickle juice.

Fill a bowl with cooked quinoa, brown rice, or farro, then top with roasted vegetables and your favorite protein, such as grilled chicken, salmon, or chickpeas. Finish with crumbled feta and a drizzle of lemon vinaigrette or tahini dressing.

Vegetable Omelets

Halve bell peppers and fill them with a mixture of cooked ground beef, rice, marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and mozzarella cheese. Bake until the peppers are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Add a side salad and dinner is done.

Breakfast-for-dinner gets an upgrade with roasted vegetables. Warm them in a skillet, pour beaten eggs over the top, and cook until set. Add goat cheese, feta, or cheddar and serve with toast and fresh fruit for an easy meal everyone can enjoy.

Mix shredded chicken with mayonnaise, a spoonful of Dijon mustard, diced celery, halved grapes, chopped pecans, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve on buttery croissants with crisp lettuce and fresh fruit on the side for a cool, refreshing meal.

Chicken Primavera Pasta Cook your favorite pasta and toss it with sautéed zucchini, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and shredded chicken. A squeeze of fresh lemon brightens the whole dish and makes it taste like summer.

Taco Skillet When time is especially tight, combine cooked ground beef with taco seasoning, black beans, corn, salsa, and cooked rice in one skillet. Sprinkle generously with shredded cheese, cover until melted, and serve with tortilla chips or warm tortillas and your favorite toppings.

Grain Bowls

Pasta Toss-In Cook a favorite short pasta, then stir in roasted vegetables, olive oil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and a handful of fresh spinach until just wilted. Add grilled chicken, Italian sausage, or white beans if you'd like extra protein, and finish with fresh herbs.
