s a father of nine, I will never forget the excitement of bringing home a newborn baby. I will never forget all

the new experiences and milestones. Of

all those experiences, my wife and I seem to have consistent memories, but when it

comes to first words, we seem to remember different. While she recalls words like “ma-ma” and “da-da”, I only seem

to remember the words, “You will never sleep again.”

Despite whatever external means can

ing interest in the study of sleep and the treatment of sleep quality through sleep

medicine. This is true across fields, including the dentistry. While treatments vary

depending on causes and provider experience, much of how sleep is treated from

a dental perspective continues to treat the same underlying cause: the airway.

s Director of Development for Jack’s Basket, a nonprofit that celebrates babies with Down syndrome and supports families from the very beginning, Katie Burwell brings professional experience, leadership, and personal passion to her work. Her career has been defined by connection, purpose, and a strong desire to help others.

“My daughter Tatum inspired me. When she was

born with Down syndrome, Jack’s Basket was one of the

first resources our family received. It brought hope and celebra-

tion into a moment filled with uncertainty and helped us feel less alone,” Katie shared. “When an opportunity presented itself to join Jack’s Basket as Director of Development, I thought, ‘Why

s a highly successful Realtor, community leader, and former educator, Lisa Dyer has built a career around serving, empowering, and helping others move confidently through life’s big decisions.

She taught for 14 years before moving to Texas in 2017 and shifted into real estate as a way to take ownership of her life while continuing to guide and educate those around her.

“When I moved to Texas, I was an empty nester and really wanted a career change,” she said. “I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny, and I felt like real estate was the perfect fit. Home ownership is a part of the American dream. Plus, real estate is all about people. I love working with people. Service is my love language.”

A

s a local entrepreneur, boutique owner, and community builder, Aimee Buckert has made it her mission to help women in Argyle feel seen, connected,

and celebrated. A Chicago native who moved to Texas in 2019, she launched TBK – The Bees Knees, a women’s clothing and

gift boutique, in March 2021 after spotting a need for a local, personalized shopping experience.

Aimee drew inspiration from her former employer, Cindy

Monroe, the owner of Thirty-One Gifts. “She inspired my journey,” Aimee shared. “She taught me how to balance life and work.”

What began as a small boutique has grown into a community hub. Aimee recently expanded into a larger space in Argyle, adding room for an in-store Mahjong

studio that now hosts regular games and beginner lessons. “I love to shop, and I

thought I could bring something to the table that no one else could,” she said.

More than just a clothing and gift outlet,

the new location has become a gathering

place where women can build friendships over games, classes, and events. “I tried

to make it the best of both worlds,” she added.

Beyond retail, Buckert is the founder of Women of Argyle, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and celebrating women while raising funds for scholarships for graduating seniors and young entrepreneurs in the Argyle area. The group hosts monthly meetings, “connection clubs," and two major fundraising events each year.

Buckert’s vision extends to the next generation. Women of Argyle provides scholarships for local high school students and offers grants to young entrepreneurs ages 12 to 17 who are starting or planning to start their own business. She also tries to nurture this entrepreneurial spirit into her greatest achievement — her sons.

“I try to instill in my boys a strong work ethic, and I try to lead by example,” she said.

For young people who aspire to be entrepreneurs or community leaders, her advice is right to the point. “Just go for it. Yes, it can be scary, but you’ll either succeed or you’ll learn a lesson.

or Dr. Regina Crone, advocating for individuals with special needs is more than a profession, it is a family legacy. As co-founder and vice president of Labeled & Loved, a nonprofit that supports mothers and caregivers of children with disabilities, she works to ensure that no family has to navigate the journey alone. She is also the founder of Therapy and Beyond, a leading provider of autism treatment and support.

“Having a front-row seat to witness the life-changing

impact of therapy shaped who I am.”

That experience inspired her to earn a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of North Texas and become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate. She is also a published researcher

in parent training and a nationally recognized speaker on autism treatment and behavior management.

Regina’s passion began more than 30 years ago, when her younger brother was diagnosed with autism. At the time, he was nonverbal and faced significant behavioral and developmental challenges. Her mother refused to accept predictions about what he would never accomplish and eventually found a professional who introduced him to behavioral therapy and sign-language communication. Not only did her brother develop verbal speech and learn to read, but he went on to attend a traditional school, graduate from high school and college, and build a successful career.

Denton County Deputies Honored with Lifesaving Award

T

he Denton County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes Deputies Gerrand Lockhart, Alan Henry, Ian Concepcion-Marquez, Shannon Roach, Tommy Cowan, Joseph Gilbert, and Sergeant Karisa Flowers for their extraordinary actions during a critical medical emergency that resulted in the successful rescue of a citizen’s life.

On the morning of March 9, 2026, while assigned to the Denton County Main Courthouse, the deputies were alerted to a citizen who had suddenly collapsed in the courthouse lobby. Upon arrival, they found the individual unresponsive, not breathing, and in immediate need of medical attention.

Without hesitation, the deputies quickly assessed the situation and began lifesaving measures. Working together as a coordinated team, they initiated CPR and

deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an effort to restore the individual’s heartbeat. Their training, teamwork, and calm response under pressure ensured that lifesaving care continued uninterrupted until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.

Homecoming Memories

A

ny Texan can tell you just how big homecoming is. From the largerthan-life football game and homecoming court to the dances, the list of homecoming traditions is endless. But one of the most iconic Southern customs is the homecoming mum.

While not exclusive to Texas, the state is well known for its massive, elaborate designs.

Designed to look like a flower, today's mums are full of braided ribbons, large bows, stuffed animals, bright colors, and just about anything else you could imagine.

The first homecoming mums can be traced back to the early 1900s, when they were nothing more than a flower pinned to a shirt with a few ribbons, and they've come a long way since.

Today, the art of making mums has become an important part of homecoming, often serving as a mother-daughter tradition.

Sabrina Rosser and Rayanne Good co-own RG Mums, one of many mum-making small businesses across the state. They are currently in their sixth homecoming season, and their business just keeps growing.

RG Mums started with two moms who loved crafting and wanted to experience making mums for their own daughters. As two Denton County natives who had simple pinned flowers at their own homecomings, they were excited to create mums for their kids.

Sabrina describes the tradition as a way for people to "showcase their personalities."

Whether it's a few ribbons braided together or a mum that ends up being bigger than its wearer, every mum is unique to the person wearing it.

From the many local small businesses to the countless people who make mums for themselves, friends, or their children, the mum-making community has certainly grown.

Sabrina and Rayanne will be the first to tell you how supportive the industry is, something they hope to continue fostering. Sabrina has been a board member of Mums-Inc.com for over two years, a community that has members all over Texas and highlights the sharing that happens between the business owners in order to keep the mum tradition alive.

"Most people don't have tutorials for how to make the things they sell," Sabrina said.

"But we do."

thing from different styles of braids to how to add sparkle to both mums and garters.

Sabrina's biggest piece of advice for anyone making a mum is to embrace the fun of it."It doesn't have to be big," she said.

"It just has to be you."

She also recommends starting early.

Mums are custom pieces that take time to create. RG Mums begins accepting orders in February and closes orders for its largest designs in July. That timeline makes sense when you see the scale of some of their creations.

If you didn’t get your order in early, you can still get many mums, including their Designer Series, through the season at rgmums.com, and see some mums on display at Denton Florist.

Sabrina and Rayanne share very similar design visions, making it easy for the two to divide and conquer as they sketch designs and develop new elements along the way.

Easy HOW TO FEED A LOON RECIPE

(Ready in 2 0 Minutes!)

MONGOLIAN GROUND BEEF NOODLES

This recipe is the ultimate BACK-TOSCHOOL weeknight solution that is easy on the wallet and guaranteed to satisfy even the hungriest family member at your table!

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

10 oz. noodles (ie, Udon, ramen, etc.)

1. Prepare the noodles per package instructions.

For the Sauce

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the soy sauce with the brown sugar, vinegar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are completely dissolved. Set aside.

½ c. soy sauce low-sodium ½ c. dark brown sugar 2 Tbsp. rice vinegar 1 tsp. sesame oil ½ tsp. red pepper flakes (optional) 1 Tbsp. cornstarch For Stir-Frying 1 lb. ground beef (80/20 or 90/10) 1 Tbsp. fresh ginger minced 4 cloves garlic minced (about 1 Tbsp.)

3. Heat your wok (or heavy skillet) over medium-high heat. Add the meat and don't break it up for a few minutes. Gently push the meat around to prevent it from sticking, but not too much; you want the meat to get a dark crust in a few spots. Then break the meat up and cook, stirring often, until it is no longer pink.

4. Tilt the wok to one side and remove all but about 1 tablespoon of the rendered grease. Use a large wooden spatula to push the meat to one side of the wok. Add the ginger, garlic, and most of the scallions and sauté in the grease, stirring often, for about 1 to 2 minutes. Stir the beef together with the sautéed ginger/garlic/scallions.

5. Give the prepared sauce a strong stir with your whisk and then pour it over the meat.

Stir-fry until slightly thickened, usually only about 1 to 2 minutes.

¼ c. scallions plus extra for garnish

6. Add the cooked noodles and toss with a couple of wooden spoons or spatulas until fully coated. Serve at once, garnished with extra scallions and toasted sesame seeds.

2 Tbsp. toasted sesame seeds
