What are they, and how do you stay healthy during the winter months?

How can you stop germs from spreading?

By Anthony Fusco, , 4th yr. student at New York Institute of Technology College of Medicine

• The best way to prevent germs from spreading is by washing hands with soap and water often and or alcohol hand rub.

Germs: you can’t see them, but they are everywhere. Germs like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, are very tiny bugs, called microorganisms. They live on all surfaces like tables, chairs, books, food, body parts and more. Germs can cause you to get sick. Colds, the flu, pneumonia, food poisoning, meningitis, and many other sicknesses are caused by germs. Who can get sick from germs? • Anyone • Babies, children, and elderly are at a higher risk of getting sick from germs. • Middle aged adults usually have stronger immune system to fight

• Wash your hands often or use alcohol hand rub Alcohol rub is good, but hand washing is a much better option • It is very important that you hand wash throughout the day. Not just after going to the bathroom, but also before and after you handle a child, animal, or food. • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, not into your hands. • Handkerchiefs should not be used; they hold many germs that you can transfer to loved ones. Ask your doctor or nurse the proper way to wash your hands and use alcohol rub. See page 14, Fighting Germs
