/ the megalithic monuments route About 6,000 years ago, small human communities settled or passed through the area that is now known as the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital . Surrounded by nature they had a rudimentary agriculture. Their concern for life was to build dolmens or tapirs. These Megalithic monuments represented a memorial to the dead and the belief that symbolized eternity and rebirth. They are considered authentic temples where they worshiped the cult of a limited number of “Divine“ ancestors . / Megalithism: derives from the Greek mega = large and lithos = stone.

/ popular festivals and pilgrimages The religious traditions occupy a prominent place in the Borough of Oliveira do Hospital. The pilgrimage to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Preces, on the 1st. Sunday of July is proof of it. One of the biggest in the region of the Beiras. Summer, Lent and Easter attract most of the visitors. Beyond the rituals of faith, there has been a concern to restore some economic activities and traditions. Examples of this, are the various festivals and fairs that currently occur in the local parishes. Products such as cheese, chestnut, wine, livestock, bread and soup and events such as crafts, ethnography, folklore and animation all go hand in hand.

/ gastronomy Inserted on the limits of the Serra da Estrela, Oliveira do Hospital inherits from this region many of its flavors and gastronomical traditions, integrating not only the Demarcated Region of the Serra da Estrela Cheese, but also, the wines, of the Demarcated Region of the Dão . It’s also worth savouring the roasted lamb, pork cracklings, bean stew of the Beiras, mushroom rice, meat seasoned with garlic and other traditional foods. As to desserts, try the traditional ones such as the thick or thin “tigelada” “curd cheese” with pumpkin jam, “cavacas” from Aldeia das Dez and the “cavaleiros” a recently created delicacy.

/ the serra da estrela cheese route The difference between the Serra da Estrela cheese and other types of sheep cheese originates in the pastures that the Bordaleira Serra da Estrela or Churra Mondegueira sheep have access to It’s milk with salt and thistle gives this cheese its unique flavour which has a straw yellow colour crust and is soft and buttery. The cheese maturing lasts for at least 45 days. During the process its washed and turned several times. When buying Serra da Estrela cheese make sure it has its certifying entity DOP. The borough of Oliveira do Hospital, has four producers of certified Serra da Estrela cheese. They are in Bobadela, Gramaços, Seixo da Beira and Vila Franca da Beira. In 2011, the Serra da Estrela cheese was voted one the 7 wonders of the Portuguese gastronomy and one of the most famous around the world. The Serra da Estrela curd is creamy. / copper and brass route The “Capital of Copper and Brass” is the title assumed by the locality of Catraia de São Paio in the parish of Oliveira do Hospital. There, one can visit the factories and see how the craftsmen work the copper out of the raw material (metal). You may purchase a wide variety of these copper pieces. Many of them are destined for exportation:… alembic pots, umbrella stands, pots, casseroles, trays, mugs, statues and other decorative pieces. You may not need a alembic pot, but a miniature is always nice as a souvenir. Many of these copper and brass pieces can be seen at the Dr. António Simões Saraiva Municipal Museum In the metalwork, we highlight the 70 year old craftsman António da Costa who still continues to keep alive the tradition and activity that he began in early childhood.

/ did you know? Copper is 100% recyclable. In the process of liquefaction, the new transformation does not lose its physical, mechanical and chemical properties. / The use of copper in cookware adds a special flavour. Food preserves it’s color, flavour and freshness and it’s antibacterial properties has health benefits. /In a copper pan the heat is distributed uniformly, saving time and energy.

/ narcissus scaberulus of the mondego Taxonomy: Narcissus scaberulus Family: Amaryllidaceae The Natura 2000 is an ecological network that aims towards ensuring the biodiversity by the conservation of natural habitats of both fauna and flora in the European Union. According to the red book of plants, its classified as “vulnerable”, and its conservation valued as of critical danger. The Mondêgo River Narcissus, has a special protection area dominated “Sítio do Carregal do Sal”. Thereby 15, 12 and 4% of this special protection area is reserved to the municipalities of Carregal do Sal, Seia and Tábua. In the county of Oliveira do Hospital this area extends along the parishes of Ervedal da Beira, Lagares da Beira, Meruge and Vila Franca da Beira, and also extensive portions of the parishes of Lagos da Beira, Lajeosa, Travanca de Lagos and Seixo da Beira.
