I’m giving up Mum’s Mail with immediate effect! I’m resigning! I no longer need to work for a living, as today I became very, very wealthy. This morning I received three e-mails to inform me that: 1. I would be receiving 7.3 million US Dollars inheritance via courier. 2. I had won 1 million British Pounds in the BBC Lotto Draw. 3. I had won 150 000 US Dollars from Nokia in a random computer ballot draw.

I doubt that anyone, not even Richard Branson, earns that much in a day! The terrifying reality is that there are SOME people (yes, you know that I know who you are…), who are very tempted to actually click on the attachments that these skelms send you via e-mail, and some of you actually DO open the attachments and/or reply! If you’re feeling tempted to react to these e-mails, please consider the following: 1. It is unlikely that someone you have never met, and who lives abroad, is going to die and leave you millions of Dollars. 2. You cannot win a lotto draw if you have not bought a ticket. 3. It is improbable that Nokia would be sending you a lot of money from a random draw you did not enter.

KAMEL POTTERIES (031) 579 1011 A handmade gift is so special! Come along and make your Christmas gifts this festive season! 34 Ashfield Avenue, Springfield Park

So what to do when your mouse is itching to hit the REPLY button…? Just click DELETE and don’t bother telling them where you’d like them to go… or visit for thousands of scary stories and info on hoax e-mails and scams which will send you scrambling for the good ol’ days of posting letters.

Alice xxx P.S. Before any nasty rumours start circulating, I’m not actually going anywhere…except for round the bend…

Festive Celebrations Toddler Product Review by Jane Linley-Thomas The Spot: A few weeks ago we went to a friend’s house for a braai. It was a relaxed and chilled affair until one out-ofcontrol three year old arrived. This child was so bad you could “hear” each parent’s inner dialogue regarding how they would address the unacceptable behaviour. She would hit the other children, grab toys, shout and on the whole was a real little brat. I recently came across an ingenious product called The Spot that would be very helpful in situations like these. The Spot is a non-slip machine-washable portable time-out mat. What I love about this product is that it can travel around in my handbag until required. Cooper, my little boy, must know when the bright red circle is placed down either at home, out at a friend’s house, a restaurant or on holiday, I mean business. The Spot comes in three different colours and costs R120 each. To place your order contact 072 993 0754. Star in Your Own Book: When I was young my folks gave me a book called “The Mystery of Scented Mountain” and the main character’s name was Jane Robyn Linley - yip, me! I was totally bowled over that this book had me as the star and mentioned my best friends’ names, my school, my parents and my pet’s name. It was almost too much to take in. I still have the book and although the stickers are faded, just looking at it brings all the memories back. I so wanted to make Cooper the star in his own adventure book and LizaJane made that happen. This Christmas Cooper and his dad star in their own version of “My Fishing AdvenVisit us at

DBN PAGE 1 - 16.indd 14

ture”. Mike loves fishing and we often talk about our one-day Midlands get away with Coop and dad casting off and mom on the banks with a G ‘n T. “My Fishing Adventure” is set in the Midlands and makes mention of his cousin India, his ginger cat Fanta, as well as one of his best friends, Samke. Go and check out Liza-Jane’s website ( and create your own book for your little one. The books are very reasonably priced at R160 including postage. Contact Liza-Jane, 083 311 9033, Funny Dummy: It is no surprise why people fall about when they see this dummy! Epic, ha! Cooper must be really confused as to why he continually has hoards of hysterical people gathered around him snapping pix with their cell phones. He also has a dummy with a full set of teeth on it, too funny. Also don’t you love his Tshirt!? I reckon Debs Harry would be stoked. It was sent along with a few others from one of my oldest school mates, Teri who lives in the UK. I find it really hard to find cool kids’ ( especially boys’) clothes - “Black Sheep” do have cute bibs and burp cloths for smaller babes. “Lady and The Punk” in Gateway has some cool “Six Bunnies” kids’ clothes too. Coop has a grey hoody from there complete with “I Love Mom and Dad” tattoo-type print all over it which I love. To view the full range of these funny dummies contact Paul on or call 083 212 1714. Festive Celebrations UVA and UVB Protection Many people are aware of the risks associated with UVB exposure but few are aware of the real risks associated with UVA exposure. UVA rays are considered to be the main cause of pigmentation, premature ageing and skin cancer and can also penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB rays. Unlike UVB, UVA rays have the ability to pass through clouds, glass and water. Applying a suitable, high protection UVA sunscreen each day can lead to the avoidance of unprotected exposure, helping to minimise the risk of developing skin cancer. Exfoliac Matifying Suncare Fluid not only has a 50+ UVB protection factor, it also contains a UVA protection factor of 42.2 which is higher than regular sun care products. This scientifically formulated, high-protection sun care fluid also provides matifying action for a non-greasy effect, which is of benefit to individuals with oily skin and yet also highly suitable for combination and normal skins. Ask yourself the following questions: Does your sunscreen leave your skin feeling and looking non-greasy? Do you know what UVA protection factor your regular sunscreen has? If the answer is no to either question, then use Exfoliac Matifying Suncare Fluid with SPF 50+ and UVA protection factor 42.2 and guarantee your UVA and UVB protection. Contact: Liza Naude, Cipla Medpro (Pty) Ltd, 021 - 917 5620. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has Exfoliac Matifying Suncare Fluid to give away. Visit to enter.

Festive Celebrations Magic in Your Hands with Wooden Spoon Margarine Wooden Spoon has added a new yellow full-fat margarine to their range. The yellow variant was launched in November and will be welcomed by South Africa’s baking community. Joining the white variant, the new yellow margarine has a slightly richer flavour and colour, which will give all baking and cooking an improved flavour. “We are answering the need identified by people who take their baking and cooking seriously and want a perfect finished product,” said Hilton Cairns, Willowton Group National Marketing Manager. “Both brick variants have been formulated to meet specific requirements of the baking industry. Wooden Spoon can be used by industry specialists, home bakers or even if it is your first batch of cupcakes.” People who are serious about cooking and baking will purchase both Wooden Spoon variants, using the yellow in the cooking and baking for a full flavour. The white variant, specifically formulated for use in icing and baking, will help you achieve that perfect colour to your icing. It is available in a 500g brick format, which allows for easy usage.

Festive Celebrations A Green Christmas In 2008, scientists reported that the carbon footprint of Christmas - including food, travel, lighting and gifts - was 650kg per person in England. Think of all the food consumed and wasted, all the presents brought and wrapping thrown away, and all the miles travelled to visit relatives. With a few more conscious decisions we can still have just as much fun and lighten the load on the planet too. Here are some reasons why a real Christmas tree is better for the environment than a fake one: • Real trees are grown here, fake ones are shipped in from China. • Most artificial trees are made from metals and plastics and are not biodegradable. The best option in South Africa is to buy an indigenous tree in a pot, and plant it in your garden after Christmas. Another idea is to use a dried branch and to decorate it.

Christmas is a time of great wonder and joy for a child. If you have ever seen a child’s face light up at the sight of an inflated Santa, or squeal in delight at gaudy decorations adorning houses, or wish they could have one of the fake gifts under the fake shopping mall trees, you’ll know what I mean. Christmas is a magical time for children, full of gifts, treats and special gatherings with family and friends.

NIGHT MARKET: Thursday 22nd December 4pm - 10pm JANUARY MARKET: Saturday 28th January 8am - 1pm Hellenic Community Centre, 6 High Grove, Umgeni Park, Durban North

But the Christian message of Christmas is not that of “give me more”. It is the message that because of Christmas we have already been “given it all”. And what we have lasts forever. Christianity teaches children that Christmas is not just a time for getting stuff and writing wish lists, but rather a wonderful time for celebrating Jesus’ birth. Children will learn that after the Christmas paper has been thrown away, the tree has been taken down, and the batteries have run out in their favourite new toy, there is something far better they have been given, something that will last and will sustain them throughout their lives. That gift is Jesus. He is truly the best gift and one that will far outlast the latest Sponge Bob DVD! Youngsters are encouraged to accept this gift from God, and to treasure the message of Christmas for the gift it really is. Children are invited to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas at three Big Christmas Fun days, 13 - 15 December, at Christ Church Umhlanga.

Emdoneni Lodge and Game Farm in Hluhluwe offers guests intimate and comfortable 3-Star Accommodation in the form of chalets and rondavels, on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Before and after dinner, join us for evening drinks around the fire, at the Boma or on the sundowner deck. Kids' activities are well planned and structured, and are done by experienced guides who are passionate about kids and nature. The aim of the Emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation Centre is to care for wild Cheetahs, Serval Cats, African Wildcats and Caracal (Lynx), which have been orphaned or injured in the wild and are in need of care and rehabilitation.

Humpty-Dumpty Wife? “…. until death do you part?” The well-known question from the marriage vows, followed by “I do” is a fitting close to the promise of lifelong support, but is it just for show? Does a faithful wife have a right to be looked after in return for all she has done for her husband and children during the marriage? Or, can she be dismissed with a smile and a wave? According to the law, husband and wife must love and support one another, maintain loyalty in terms of sexual fidelity and so on. Providing support – as in money, food, clothes, medical care – is one of the basic marital duties and the main reason (other than the often temporary madness of romantic love) spouses and other human beings stay together at all. How dependable is it in the long term?

Women invest their time, effort and money in their families. In the traditional household this has been viewed as the duty of a wife. The unspoken assumption is that, when all is said and done, she will be looked after in return. Lifelong maintenance has been the expectation, where a woman has no career and insufficient financial means of her own. Not any more, it seems. In a recent High Court case, a woman in her autumn years was told to make do with her minimal income, even though her husband of 15 years earned seven times more than she did. Effectively, she was told, “Get over it and look after yourself.” It could mean the end of lifelong maintenance – or at least, a raising of the barrier to entry for those seeking ongoing maintenance.

BUSINESS TALK Unfair Dismissal Labour law in South Africa is governed primarily by the Labour Relations Act (the “Act”). The Act also deals with the issue of unfair dismissal and provides that every employee has the right not to be unfairly dismissed. Once the existence of a dismissal is established, the employer must prove that the reason for the dismissal is fair and carried out fairly and in terms of the law. In other words, a dismissal needs to be substantively and procedurally fair.

• To meet a group that can increase the sales in your business. • To be the only person from your profession represented. Wishing all BNI Chapters a fantastic festive season!

For a beautiful body, hands, hair, nails & feet!

Substantive fairness would include satisfying the following: • Was there a workplace rule that the employee breached? • Was the employee guilty of the offence charged? • Did the gravity of the offence justify the penalty of dismissal? Procedural fairness in respect of a Disciplinary Hearing would include: • Adequate notice. • Informing the employee of the charge/s. • Permitting the employee representation (fellow employee or union member). • Allowing the employee to call witnesses. • Ensuring the presiding officer is impartial. If there is a dispute about the fairness of a dismissal, the aggrieved employee has 30 days to refer the matter to the CCMA or the appropriate Bargaining Council. The Act provides further that a dismissal will be automatcally unfair where an employer dismisses employees for: • Joining a trade union or not joining a trade union. • Participation in a legal strike/protest action. • Refusal to work during a strike or lock-out. • Pregnancy or related reasons. • Discrimination by the employer against the employee.

Don’t Eat Chicken Wings! Claim: Growth hormones injected into chicken wings cause ovarian cysts in women. Circulating Since: May 2004. Status: False. E-mail: Don’t eat chicken wings - ladies especially! A friend of mine recently had a growth in her womb and she underwent an operation to remove the cyst. A relapse occurred just a few months later. Distressed, she rushed down to her gynaecologist for a consultation. During her consultation, her doctor asked her if she had eaten chicken wings. You see, the truth is in this modern day and age chickens are injected with steroids to accelerate their growth so that the needs of this society can be met. Chickens that are injected with steroids are usually given the shot at the neck or the wings. Therefore, it is in these places that the highest concentration of steroids exist. These steroids have terrifying effects on the body. Snopes Says: It is a tall tale, nothing more, an expression of widespread anxiety concerning animal products and hormones. Agricultural advances of a nature so as to not be well understood by the average person have instilled in us a sense of concern about the foods we eat. We fear that, unbeknownst to us, what we are ingesting is loaded with substances that are doing us untold amounts of harm. In particular, that anxiety focuses upon hormones and steroids that might be lurking in animal products. Poultry-related fears of this nature are misplaced. As the USFDA notes: “Residue levels of hormones in food have been demonstrated to be safe as they are well below any level that would have a known effect on humans.”

HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE Post-Festive Organising

The holiday buzz is starting a little earlier each year! As a result, the sense of panic you feel stretches over two months so by the time January rolls around, you’re in no mood for anything, let alone being ready for the new year. Here are a few quick tips to start your new year on the right foot: • Cupboard: Start organising your wardrobe by pulling out any clothing that hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months. Decide what needs to go or stay. Put everything back that you’re keeping, organised into seasons or colours. When you see what you have grouped together you’re less likely to buy the same thing twice. • Office: A clear desk is essential so tidy up desk space first, keeping only those supplies that are used daily on the desk. The rest should be put in a nearby storage cabinet. Paper is an obvious problem in any home office. Take this opportunity to shred any documents that aren’t needed and create files for things you need to access. • Garage: Free up floor space using hooks, shelving and baskets. Hang bicycles, garden equipment and tools and zone your space. There’s much to be said for using your garage for your cars and not your junk! • Lists: If making lists helps you, then now is the time to go through your notebook, tear out the old sheets and buy a new notebook. HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE Gift Wrapping Spoil, expectancy, pleasure, delight, thrill, promise, suggest, joy, enchantment. All such exciting words – better still they describe the feeling when you give or receive a beautifully wrapped gift! Christmas is a time of giving, togetherness, family, warmth and fun. Make it a memorable, enjoyable time for yourselves and the children! Firstly, get organised! Yes, I know, we all rush around at the end but if you can get the lists written, the pressies bought and the menus planned in time, it takes the chaos and exhaustion out of it all. Secondly, decide on your theme for this Christmas – grey and red, gold and cream, blue and silver, rustic or shiny? The choices are endless. Once you have bought the presents and chosen your theme, buy your wrapping paper. A good look for wrapping is to buy tissue paper and double it with clear cellophane. It adds a glitz to the present and heightens the expectancy of what gorgeous gift is being given! Tie with your chosen ribbon and attach the card to the ribbon and at the same time attach a Christmas bauble and tie them both into the bow.

Pam Golding Properties An International Associate of Savills

Another way of wrapping gifts is to wrap in a gift. Take a dish cloth or a scarf and wrap the gift with the scarf. Scrunch up the fabric and tie with a ribbon in a bow – now your special wrapping is also the gift! A sarong also works well for this. A cosmetic bag works the same way – place your gift in the cosmetic bag and tie a big, generous bow through the eye of the zip handle.

HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE Skip Liquid Detergent and Comfort Concentrated Softener Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail just tried out Unilever’s recently launched liquid detergent and concentrated softener. “I was delighted with the results. It’s hard to believe that such a small amount of liquid can get the washing clean. I had often battled with residue but of course with the liquid there are no marks left on the clothes. Best of all is the divine smell – it makes you want to wrap yourself in your laundry all day!” New Skip Liquid Detergent’s Fibre Protect technology penetrates deep into the fabric, so it cleans in a better and new way, smoothing and aligning fibres so stains and dirt wash away more easily, giving clothes better clean, better shape and better colour without any damage to clothing/fabrics. Visit www. for more info. Being a concentrate, Comfort Concentrated Softener doesn’t need to be diluted. Just one small cap is all you need (plus a smaller cap means a smaller impact on the environment). Built into Comfort’s formula are micro-sized fresh-release capsules that infiltrate your clothing during the wash cycle. When the clothes are dry, the capsules burst, slowly releasing perfume with every move you make. So when you wear your clothes, their fresh smell and softness will be much more impressive in comparison to those washed with ordinary fabric softeners. Visit for more info. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has hampers to give away. Visit to enter. P.S. Let us know what you think of these new products! Send your comments to

Headache-Free Christmas

BCHD (STELL.), MFGDP RCS (UK), FGDP (UK) Diploma in Implant Dentistry

In the spirit of goodwill, The Headache Clinic has highlighted some of the common festive headaches - and their remedies to help navigate smoothly through the season’s pitfalls:

SPECIAL SERVICES: • Children • Bleaching • Nervous Patients • Cosmetic Treatment • Same Day Crowns • Implants

111 Kensington Drive, (cnr Beachway & Kensington), Durban North TEL: 031 - 564 2491

• Let your heart be light - December can be a very stressful time of the year, thanks to large family gatherings over the festive season, and stress is a major headache trigger. Headache and migraine sufferers should try to manage stress and plan ahead of time for big family get-togethers and holidays to avoid tension headaches. • Christmas feasts to delight Eat balanced meals three times a day with healthy snacks in between to make sure your body gets the nutrients and energy it needs. Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) can also trigger headaches in many people. If a meal with high sugar content is eaten, it can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels followed by a fast drop that may trigger a headache. Eating a meal with low sugar content may prevent the onset of a headache during the day. • Make sure to sleep well at night – Fatigue is a major trigger of headaches so aim to sleep seven or eight hours a night. • Keep your alcohol intake light - Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol leads to dehydration. Headache sufferers should try not to drink liquor if it is a trigger for headache. If you do have a drink, ensure that you drink plenty of water during and following a session of indulgence. At least one glass of water to each glass of alcohol is advisable.

Clinical Psychologist

MA (Couns Psych) PR 0290327

Counselling psychologist, Jaci Henry, does extensive work with couples. One of the main complaints she hears is a lack of connection with one another. With busy work schedules and the pressures of family life one-onone time together needs to be prioritised. “Date night” is a good way of ensuring that you spend at least one evening each week together, reminding yourselves that that you were partners first before the children came along. Have fun together - laugh, play board games, do something lighthearted to rejuvenate your relationship. Romance is usually present at the beginning of the relationship, but wears off as we get comfortable with our partners. We start to take each other for granted instead of being mindful and grateful for individual efforts. Romance reminds both partners of how loved and special they are to the other person, which builds their bond and connection. Intimacy is an element of the relationship that needs to be nurtured. Connecting with your partner on a physical level deepens the connection on an emotional level. When you are intimate with your partner you feel more in touch and more bonded which has the positive benefit of increased patience and tolerance with your partner. Communication is vital. We cannot expect our partners to know exactly what we want and how to provide it. Open the communication channels regarding your relationship and the changes you would like. Acknowledging and appreciating your partner will spur him/her on to continue contributing meaningfully.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Boost Frazzled Skin (Formerly Golden Products)

Look your best this Christmas by following this five-point regime for a revived, renewed and revitalised complexion: First - Cleanse. Eliminate daily impurities with a cleanser suited to your skin type (dry to normal or combination to oily). Second - Exfoliate. In the natural renewing cycle of human skin, cells are constantly being born, rising through the epidermal layers to the surface. Remove old skin cells and stimulate new cell regeneration with an exfoliator two to three times a week. Reveal a fresher, younger you. Third - Tone. Maintain pH levels and refine skin texture daily with toner and ensure a smoother and even skin tone. Fourth - Moisturise. Hydrate, minimise lines and protect your skin with a moisturiser. For those dry times when extra moisturising is needed, use a moisturising cream at night, as well as a formula that boosts collagen. There are many good clinically proven products available that will be kind to sensitive skin, help restore elasticity and assist with repairing sun damage. Lastly – Renew and Protect. For this step use a formula containing antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances or nutrients which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our bodies. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals. Vitamins with antioxidant properties include vitamins A, C, D and E.

Tips for keeping children congestion free: • Avoid very dry and humid environments. Use a humidifier. • Keep them away from potential irritants like chemical pollutants and cigarette smoke. • If they are older than two years, use a topical nasal decongestant spray when their noses are stuffy to reduce the swelling. • Limit the amount of time they spend in swimming pools. Chlorine and water can irritate their nasal passages and cause inflammation. • Get them to inhale steam. • Elevate their heads when they sleep. Source: Novartis, Visit us at

Many parents dismiss rhinitis – a blocked or stuffy nose – as little more than an inconvenient irritation for their children. But it can significantly impair their quality of life and has been linked to fatigue, headaches, sleep disorders and learning difficulties. With rhinitis affecting at least 40% of children at any given time, it’s important we help them protect their health by keeping their nasal passages congestion free. Research suggests that 35% of children suffering from severe respiratory allergies miss days of school because of the condition, and young children not only suffer twice as many incidents of infectious rhinitis as adults – an average of six to eight colds per year – they are also more likely to develop severe symptoms. Rhinitis has many different causes, from pollen, animal hair, pollution and mould to viral and bacterial infections. These airborne irritants (allergens) trigger a release of mediators in the eyes, nose and throat, which causes inflammation and fluid production in the linings of the nasal passages, sinuses and eyes.

FASHION & BEAUTY Eye Beauty Tips The skin surrounding your eyes is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, often prone to problems like puffy eyes, dark circles, wrinkles and fine lines. Eye care is essential and should be given special attention to maintain a youthful appearance. Eye treatments should be worn day and night. Wear a lighter formula during the day that is easily absorbed to hydrate the eyes, e.g. an eye gel. Use a richer eye cream at night that will rejuvenate and nurture the eye area. Eye balms and oils are very rich and nourishing and best for night time. Use eye treatments specifically designed for the eyes and not your day or night cream as these may have ingredients in them that could cause irritation to the delicate eye area. Apply eye treatments after cleansing. Place a small amount on your finger tip and, using a gentle tapping motion, lightly trace circles around the eyes starting from the inner point of the eyebrows, moving under the eyes and then upward towards the outer brows. Try Esse’s Eye & Lip Cream suitable for all skin types. It contains high levels of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump the skin and is loaded with antioxidants to slow down the ageing process. This preservative-free formulation is ultra mild and 100% of the total ingredients are from natural origin. Other tips: drink plenty of water, wear sunglasses all year round and get enough sleep. PREGNANCY & BABIES Belly Dancing Belle Nuweyra Dalais is a 28 year old optometrist by day and a belly dancer by night! Attracted to this beautiful dance form a few years ago, Nuweyra has now completed her second BDASA exam and in September performed in the dance showcase Shall We Dance. She is also pregnant with her first child. Lessons take up four hours of Nuweyra’s week, with more rehearsals before performances or exams. “For me belly dancing is a way of expressing myself,” said Nuweyra, “and I love socialising with other beautiful dancers and wearing the amazing costumes. It’s my special ‘me’ time.” Benefits that Nuweyra has seen include improvement in her co-ordination, balance and posture. Just like other beginner dancers, Nuweyra began by learning such movements as “hip snaps”, “figures of eight” and “shimmies”. For Shall We Dance she participated in a variety of dances and her goal is to finish all seven BDASA exams.

Julie Davies 083 332 6717

When Nuweyra fell pregnant she visited her doctor who, because she had no risk factors, gave her permission to continue dancing. “There are limitations though,” said Nuweyra, “so I can’t do hip movements that are too sharp or do too many shimmies. If in doubt I speak to my dance teacher, Senta Duffield, who is well qualified to advise me.” Senta explained further: “Belly dancing is perfectly safe as long as the pregnant dancer has been dancing for quite a while beforehand – it isn’t a good idea to try develop the ‘belly dance’ muscles while pregnant. But if the pregnancy is going well and the doctor approves it, belly dancing can then really help keep the mother’s abdominal muscles strong for labour!”

KIDS’ CORNER Toddler Tantrums We have all seen it. If you have a toddler you sympathise with the parents. If you don’t have a toddler you shake your head and quietly think “Mine would NEVER do that!” Well I have news for you. They will, and when you least expect them to. Temper tantrums are synonymous with the toddler years. The tantrum in the hands of a skilful toddler is an art form that would rival a Broadway show. He takes a quick look around to check that he is not going to get hurt when he lunges to the floor, he checks to see that he has the audience’s full attention. In a split second he starts his act, every detail designed to get the best reaction from his audience. How long the show lasts depends on the audience (you the parent). The older the child the longer they can perform. Thankfully by age four they have found better ways to get what they want.

A toddler in full tantrum mode cannot be negotiated with: • Divert - Works well with the young toddler. Try and divert his attention e.g. “Look at this...” • Ignore - Stay calm, don’t get stressed, don’t argue. Just go about what you are doing. This is not easy. Check that he can’t get hurt and if you have to, leave the room. An Oscar-winning performance without an audience might just not be worth the effort. • Time Out - With the volume getting higher and the arms flaying, gently but firmly pick him up and place him in his room. No shouting from you. Just calmly but in a firm voice say that this behaviour is unacceptable and he must stay there till he is calmer.

KIDS’ CORNER Child Safety • Cell Phone/Internet Safety: • Children be wary - people online can pretend to be children. • Don’t tell people online that you are home alone. • Don’t agree to meet people you have met online without checking them out first. • Never send them a picture of yourself or a letter containing your address. • Never talk about sex or divulge physical details about yourself. • Be wary of accepting gifts like airtime from strangers. • Be careful speaking to people in chat rooms - how often do you talk to strangers in real life? • Other Safety Issues: • Parents choose babysitters with care – get as many references as possible. Monitor and inform your neighbours of the babysitter. • Don’t drop your children off alone at malls, movies, video arcades or parks. There is safety in numbers. • Boredom leads to risk taking e.g. visiting taxi depots, consume alcohol, smoke. • Keep children away from hooka. • Be wary of people who make tempting offers to children and teens like “holiday jobs”. • Be wary near water. • Be involved in your children’s lives. Make your house a place where your child wants to be and where they want to bring their friends. • Safety Tips: • Create rules based on the four “Ws” – Why, Where they can go, With whom, When they will return. • Get I.D. bracelets or other means of identification with your phone number on it. • If Your Child Goes Missing: • DO NOT wait 24 hours before reporting your child missing! Report your child missing to the police immediately. • Always keep a recent photograph of your child in your purse/wallet or on your cell phone.

ZEAL FOR THE NEW YEAR! Help your children learn a better way to achieve success. A realistic goal setting plan is provided that ensures movement in the right direction as well as motivation to maintain momentum.

Absolute Au Pairs is a Ballitobased child minder placement agency passionate about providing a tailor-made, quality service to families across KZN. The agency understands it can be daunting leaving your children in the care of another person, no matter how well qualified a candidate. This is why they take pride in offering candidates who have been screened, reference/ character checked and personally interviewed. Owner, Jessica Galloway, who has worked as a remedial tutor and au pair for over five years, believes in dealing with each family on a personal basis. She assesses their unique childcare requirements, which gives the candidates peace of mind, knowing that the agency offers a safe and structured environment for au pairs and families. Absolute Au Pairs also offers a hotel and establishment babysitting service, and was the sole agency chosen to offer childcare services to guests at the Hilton Hotel in Durban during the International Olympic Conference this year. They have also launched their special needs branch which offers homework and extra lesson tutors as well as facilitators to assist with a range of special needs requirements ranging from children needing basic academic assistance, to ADHD, Autism, mental and physical disabilities/ barriers. Absolute Au Pairs offers discounted rates to single parent and financially strained families and charges no registration fees. The agency is running a back-toschool special.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Montessori Teachers

You Want The Best For Your Child...Yes?

A recent Google search of “Montessori Schools in China” reveals the extent to which the Montessori teaching philosophy has established itself in schools in that vast country. Interestingly, many of the Montessori teachers working in China aren’t Chinese, but hail from the U.K., Europe and other Western countries.

Confident, Capable, Believing in Themselves, Enjoying Learning, Having Fun & Making Friends in a Safe & Secure Environment.

Given the debilitating effects of the continuing global recession, a Montessori teaching career certainly merits consideration as a career option for school leavers. Although not a guaranteed ragsto-riches career option, there is a need for qualified educators in South Africa and beyond our borders. An NQF Level 5 accredited Montessori teaching qualification, the Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Development, run over one year and offered through Montessori Centre South Africa (MCSA) in association with Montessori Life Pre-Primary Language and Teaching Academy, provides an excellent opportunity to aspiring teachers.

What is Montessori Education? Montessori is an approach to early education that focuses on the immense capacity of children to absorb information when given the freedom and independence to learn at their own pace. It takes into account how children’s thought processes differ from those of adults. Dr Maria Montessori founded this philosophy as far back as 1900. It’s over 100 years since the first Montessori school was established in Rome in 1907 and today there are over 300 Montessori pre-schools situated across South Africa and many thousands across the globe.

Montessori Higher Education Certificate Start Your New Year with an Exciting New Career... in a Growing Global Industry Montessori Life Pre-Primary, Language & Teacher Academy in association with Montessori Centre South Africa, an ETDP - SETA accredited provider, offers an NQF level 5 accredited Higher Education Teaching Certficate in Early Childhood Development. Lecture Duration: 1 year, begins 21 January 2012 Practical Training: 240 hours with school internship arranged Outcome: Qualifies you to work in Montessori and mainstream pre-schools. Recognised by SA Council of Educators Course Venue: Montessori Life Campus, 7 Little Nook, Sunningdale, Umhlanga.

Decorate with icing sugar, berries and cream. • Apple punch – mix two litres apple juice, two litres Nestlé Pure Life Naartjie Flavoured Water, four peaches quartered, two mangoes sliced. • Games: • Invite guests to come to the party dressed as their favourite movie star/character. • Divide the children into groups. Let each group choose a scene from a movie and act it out for everyone. Film each “movie” and award a prize for the best production. • Play charades, using movies as the subject. • Watch a DVD together and take tickets for admission in exchange for popcorn.

Use What?

• 1 Black Light/UV light bulb • 1 Table with black table cloth and white confetti sprinkled on it. Glow-in-the-dark jelly • 1 packet jelly • Tonic water • Bowl Glow-in-the-dark ice cubes • Tonic water • Ice tray Glow-in-the-dark juice • Tonic water • Juice • Glasses/paper cups Glow-in-the-dark water • 3 or 4 yellow highlighters • Water • Bowl

Do What?

• Glow-in-the-dark jelly: Mix the jelly as per the recipe and substitute the water by using tonic water. Allow to set overnight. Let kids make shapes using the cookie cutters. • Glow-in-the-dark ice cubes: Prepare the day before. Put tonic water into ice tray and freeze overnight. • Glow-in-the-dark juice: Mix juice with tonic water and serve. Tonic water has a bitter taste! • Glow-in-the-dark water: Cut highlighter and remove centre spongy roll. Dip roll in a small amount if water so that ink dissolves out. Mix the dilute with more water.

So What?

“Glow in the dark” falls under several different sciences including: • Photoluminescence by definition is the emission of light from a molecule or atom that has absorbed electromagnetic energy: examples include fluorescence and phosphorescence materials. The glow in the dark plastic constellation kits that you stick on your wall or ceiling are an example of a photoluminescence based product. • Bioluminescence is the light emitted by living organisms using an internal chemical reaction (think deep sea creatures) • Chemiluminescence is the emission of light without the emission of heat as the result of a chemical reaction (for example glow sticks). • Radioluminescence is created by the bombardment of ionizing radiation. Tonic water glows because the bitter flavoring of tonic water is due to the presence of quinine, which glows blue-white when placed under a black light. Activity courtesy of:

LET’S PARTY! Diving with the Sharks The Addison family operate the Blue Wilderness Dive Expedition Company out of Rocky Bay and recently returned from a trip to the USA where they appeared on NBC’s the “Today Show”. Their appearance on America’s fourthlongest running television programme was thanks to the fact that the everyday lives of the Addisons, parents Mark and Gail and daughter Ella, are closely connected to one of nature’s most controversial animals, the shark. Mark, Gail and Ella made use of their appearance on the talk show to highlight messages of marine conservation regarding the plight of sharks. As a shark expert and marine conservationist, Mark has spent 30 years diving with sharks around the world. What sets Mark and his family apart from the crowd, however, is the fact that they choose to interact with the sharks face to face, without the use of a cage. “Cages promote fear not understanding, and I have spent a considerable amount of time in the water with sharks to better understand their behaviour. I have translated this knowledge into quality client experiences, be they film crews or recreational divers.” Mark had this to say about his experience on the Today Show: “Having baby sat over 500 productions from feature films to television inserts, the calmness and professionalism of the NBC Today Show live team absolutely blew me away. This has been the top show in the USA for over 40 years and it shows.” The Addison family are all part of the international Shark Angels shark conservation movement. WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY The Wilderness Act The “Wilderness Act” is a duo consisting of vocalist, Portia Malunga-Rowling, and guitarist, Jonathan van den Berg. The duo features prominently on the local calendar and is suited to weddings, birthdays or corporate lunches, at which mellow but classy sounds are required for entertainment or as a backdrop. The styles of music they play are Swing, Bossa-nova, ballads, modal, jazz standards and improvisations, virtuoso guitar and top 40 hits. The Wilderness Act has played at various private and corporate functions as well as at the following venues: Splashy Fen, White Mountain Festival, Society (Florida Road), Centre for Jazz (UKZN), NSA Gallery (Glenwood), Badgers (Glenwood), Spiga D’Oro and The Collective (both Florida Road). You can see them every Saturday at The Corner Café, Glenwood, from 12pm to 2pm. Apart from doing gigs with The Wilderness Act Jon is also the keyboardist for “The La Els” (winners of the 2010 Global Moguls competition). He has travelled and worked abroad but has made Durban his home. Jon teaches private guitar, keyboard and bass lessons at Eden College Durban, St Henry’s Marist Brothers College and Glenwood Christian School.
