Why shouldn’t I use a home doppler? If you saw someone collapsed in the street would you check their pulse and walk away? Or would you call an ambulance? The same goes for your baby, if you notice a change in your baby’s regular pattern of movement, they could be unwell. Do not take the presence of a heartbeat that all is ok. If your baby is unwell or in distress the only time something can be done is when there is a heartbeat. When there is no heartbeat it is too late. If you notice a change in your babies regular pattern of movement call your midwife.

Do not use your home doppler for reassurance

arlier this year, Michelle and Gill from the Mummy and Me team had the absolute pleasure of being invited to be part of the first Press Day ran by beautiful children’s brand ‘Childhome’ in Antwerp, Belgium. Established in 1985, Childhome is still very much a Family run business and we were certainly warmly welcomed like one of the family too! Childhome is the parent company for Childwood and Childwheels. Whether you’re looking for; a cleverly designed ‘Mommy Bag’, a practical and Half pageaall functions1.pdf stylish highchair, beautifully designed1 nursery furniture set, or a quadruple

pushchair - this brand has it all! With many baby brands focusing on ‘New’ parents, it was refreshing to see a brand that meets the needs and desires of both new parents, and of those with growing families. Over the coming issues of Mummy and Me Magazine, we will be exploring Childhome further and bringing you some of their top products (some of which we are putting to the test!). In the meantime we invite you to explore their fantastic range at

ongratulations on the beautiful 'Mother' maternity range available at Want That Trend. What made you decide to launch a maternity range?

Thank you so much! During my previous pregnancy I really struggled to find affordable maternity wear that I genuinely liked and ended up wearing my husband’s wardrobe half of the time. So this time around I wanted to provide a maternity collection that gave not just me, but all pregnant women the chance to feel good about themselves. I also wanted to ensure that no matter what the occasion – be that a party, picking up the kids from school, or even on Christmas day – expecting mothers always have something to wear! So, having already launched my previous clothing collections with Want That Trend.Com, which I am thrilled to say have been a huge success, a maternity just felt like the natural progression as soon as I found out the wonderful news that I was expecting my second child.

The Katie Piper Maternity range is available in sizes 8 to 18 with some pieces available in sizes 20-22. Many maternity ranges forget about plus size women, how important was it to you for YOUR range to be available to women of all sizes? It’s really important to me that every woman has the chance to look and feel great in their clothing choices and my previous collections have also had items available in these sizes too. Every woman deserves to feel confident in their clothes no matter what their size.

“It’s really important to me that every woman has the chance to look and feel great”

With the Katie Piper Maternity Range featuring items under £25, the range is very affordable making it easy for expectant women to purchase a great maternity wardrobe for their pregnancy. With such a fabulous collection it will be difficult to choose, but which is your favourite piece from the collection and why? That’s a tricky one as obviously I love them all, but I think it would have to be the Maternity Navy Strappy Wrap Over Culotte Jumpsuit (£24.95) as it’s just so versatile. I love wearing it in the day with a white t-shirt underneath and a comfy pair of white trainers, and then I dress it up in the evening by taking off the t-shirt and adding a pair of heels and jewellery to accessorise it. I think

Pregnancy it’s really handy, both being pregnant and already having a little one to look after, wearing a jumpsuit too as I’m always running after her so for practicalities it’s great. For me though, I love that I can still look stylish and show off my enhanced curves due to pregnancy in it.

What has been your pregnancy craving? I literally can’t get enough of cakes and pastries these past few months! For me, it’s so important to have a healthy balance when pregnant so I have my sweet treats in moderation but I also ensure I’m getting all the nutrients and vitamins to keep myself and the little one healthy – as you’ll see from my Instagram, I do keep it pretty healthy when it comes to my overall diet.

You have had to overcome a lot of obstacles in the past surrounding your own image, which in turn has enabled you to help so many people. With many women struggling to accept their changing day with a body in pregnancy, wearing it in the ve lo I “ how do you feel your rneath, collection can help white t-shirt unde them ‘embrace their bump’? and then I dress it up in the evening

by adding a pair of Pregnancy is a time where insecurities and body hang ups can be accentuated so I truly hope that my ‘Mother’ Collection can help others to embrace their bump, and I believe that there really is something to suit every pregnant woman within the collection. From jumpsuits, to maxi dresses, to skater dresses, to t-shirts, even to a workout top, I’ve carefully selected clothing that is not only designed to flatter all shapes but is also designed to feel great against your skin. It’s amazing how much your body changes during pregnancy and I believe it’s so important to know that other women and fashion brands know how you feel and cater for you during that time. From your own experience, what is your favourite part of pregnancy? I think it would have to be the second trimester as during the first you always want to share the exciting news with the world but you have to hold back from telling others until you are 100% sure everything is ok with the baby, I don’t think anyone enjoys morning sickness that comes with it either! And I think by the time you get towards the end of your pregnancy you just want to meet the little one! Having a young child myself I’ve really enjoyed being able to share the excitement with her and it’s really special being able to watch the bump grow together – she’s even been telling everyone that she’s pregnant herself which is very funny!

Who is your pregnancy crush?

Can it be a girl… or multiple girls? Ha! I literally LOVE it when I get tagged in pictures of heels” expecting mums wearing my collection, honestly it makes me so happy to see how amazing they both look and feel wearing it! What is the one piece of advice you would give to any new Mum or Mum-to-be? Treasure every moment. As cheesy as it sounds it’s scary how quickly time goes and especially at that age how much they change. Spend precious time with your little one and take it all in.

ASK the

Exper t

Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.

This issue, Lindsey Campbell, a Breastfeeding Consultant answers questions on the first few days of Breastfeeding.

What can I do to initiate my baby’s first feed? Having skin-to-skin contact with your baby as soon as possible will enable them to regulate their temperature and breathing. It is a great time for you to bond with your baby and recover post-labour. It is also a great time for you to try your first breastfeed. Your midwife will be able to support you in the process and help your baby to latch if needbe, although many women are pleasantly surprised at naturally this occurs. Skin-to-skin is great at any time and can help calm your baby.

How will I know if my baby is getting enough milk? Your Midwife or Health Visitor will be monitoring your baby’s weight gain in the early days and weeks post-birth. This gives a good indication whether feeding is on track. But two things you can look out for as a good measurement of their consumption is - How they are feeding, can you see their cheeks moving and hear them swallowing? Another good indication is your baby having plenty of wet and dirty nappies. NHS guidelines are; 2-3 wet/soiled nappies in the first 48 hours, at least 2 soft yellow poos from Day 4 and from Day 5

onwards at least 6 in every 24hours. You baby should appear alert and healthy and your breasts feel softer post feed.

With my friend’s wedding a few weeks away and Christmas coming up, will I be able to have an alcoholic drink while breastfeeding? While you are breastfeeding the food you eat and the drink you consume can get into your breastmilk, this includes alcohol. It is generally recommended that breastfeeding mothers have no more than one or two units of alcohol once or twice a week i.e. 2 small glasses of wine. Research has shown that regularly drinking in excess of 2 units a day while breastfeeding may affect your baby’s development. An occasional drink is unlikely to harm your baby. So for those special occasions 1-2 small glasses of wine would be fine, however breastfeeding should be well established so it would not be advisable in the very early days. The NHS advise that 1 unit of alcohol is likely to have left your breastmilk three hours after consumption.

There’s No Such Thing as the

Perfect Parent!

In a recent survey, The Baby Show asked their database if they had ever experienced a ‘parenting fail’. From inconvenient leakages, ill-timed sprays and the dreaded ‘poonami,’ here is a run-down of the best parenting fails from their database: (warning contains graphic descriptions!)

B

ecoming a parent in 2017 is one of the hardest things to do. With evolving technology and almost everyone having an opinion on your parenting style – either face-toface, or online – the image of the ‘perfect parent’ is, quite simply, imperfect. The pressure on parents is constant as they are bombarded with (often conflicting) advice and information, as well as images on social media of gorgeous parents with their cute-as-button kids, in their spotlessly clean and tidy houses. As a backlash against this – dozens of irreverent social media accounts have rocketed in popularity as parents take the opportunity to share the true side of parenting and the funny stories that come with it, creating a community and support network for parents who can relate to ‘real’ parenting. Anna Whitehouse and Matt Farquharson are Mother and Papa Pukka and will soon be speaking at The Baby Show, with MadeForMums, which returns to London Olympia from 20th – 22nd October. They have over 100,000 followers on social media and following their success, have recently launched a book entitled Parenting the sh*t out of life, a unique and hilarious take on the horrors and humour of modern parenting. Anna (aka Mother Pukka) says: “There is no such thing as the perfect parent; we’re all just working it out for ourselves and doing the best we can. We’ve been told for years how to do things but no matter how many books or articles you read, ultimately you’re winging it for your first time round – and quite often second and third - and it’s important for parents not to put too much pressure on themselves.” Ask for help is the biggest piece of advice that new parents would give to expectant parents waiting for their new arrival according to new research from The Baby Show. In a survey of 1032 parents

The list of top pieces of advice from new parents included: 1. Ask friends and family for help 2. Sleep while the baby sleeps 3. Listen to your instincts 4. Limit visitors 5. Seek professional help if you are worried or struggling 6. Get out and about 7. Batch cook meals before the baby arrives 8. Join groups to meet new parents 9. Get a cleaner 10. Get a good selection of take away menus on the show’s database, nearly one in five (19%) highlight that as their top piece of advice: after all, you won’t win a medal for doing it all on your own, so give yourself a break and draft in help when you can . This was followed by sleeping while your baby sleeps (17%) and thirdly, listen to your instincts. Wing Yan Lee from The Baby Show says: “These may be considered parenting ‘fails’, but if you didn’t experience them you would be missing out! Poonamis, milk spillages and vomiting babies are part and parcel of the parenting journey: we learn from them and we grow as parents. Sharing and laughing about our ‘fails’ is a great way of bonding with other parents and it can help build support networks that can last a lifetime.” Parents looking for genuine, down-to-earth advice from some of the UK’s leading parenting experts and shop for all their baby essentials can head to The Baby Show in London Olympia from 20th – 22nd October. The Baby Show will also be returning to the Birmingham NEC in May of next year. For more information visit

“When registering my daughter’s birth I walked out of the registrar’s office without her… I did realise before I left the building though - tiredness and exhaustion had really caught up with me!” “Balling my eyes out when she had her first set of immunisations! My bubba went a shade of crimson I’ve never seen again to date (she’s two and half now), mouth wide open with no sound coming out then a massive breath followed by an almighty wail. The GP asked if I needed a tissue to which I responded ‘No thanks, she has a muslin’ and the GP responded ‘Not for the baby - for you!’ I didn’t realise I was crying until she said that!” “I left the lid off the newly, painstakingly expressed breast milk bottle in the kitchen. I had a whole 120 ml and was feeling like super woman! I then went to get the lid quickly, leaving the milk on the sofa side table and then heard the dog lapping it up!” “When trying to give Calpol post immunization I ended up squirting it all over her face!” “My youngest smeared dairylea all over himself thinking it was suncream.”

“Giving baby a bath in his tub on kitchen table while daddy was having breakfast...I must say my baby had a great aim when he caught daddy’s toast with a squirt....lol” “Our baby vomited all over me the day we were going on holiday so I quickly bundled my dressing gown and all his clothes into the washing machine to get them through before we left. It was only once I had got him to sleep for morning nap and was finally sitting with a cup of tea that I noticed that my phone was going round and round in the washer as it had been in my dressing gown pocket!”

Mummy and Me are delighted to share the experiences of proud parents in their birth journey bringing their new arrival into the world

A

fter developing Gestational Diabetes, we had been told we would be induced at 39 weeks - as GD babies can be on the larger side.

Growth scan measurements had estimated our baby to be in excess of 10lb at full term. So on the 17th January we arrived at the Liverpool Women's hospital induction suite at 8pm. As first time parents we were quite nervous and didn't really know what to expect, we were made to feel extremely comfortable and staff explained to us in detail what was going to happen. My first pessary was inserted and so the waiting began. 13 hours later, another pessary and I was barely 1cm dilated. We were encouraged to try walking to speed things along so off we went whilst the team decided on the next steps. The decision was made to transfer me across to delivery suite. Here a doctor attempted to break my waters. At 12.15pm my waters were eventually broken and I was placed on a hormonal drip to bring on my contractions. My plan was to have no plan, I wanted to see how I got on and was open minded

about pain relief. As time went on I was due an examination, again nothing much had changed - so the drip was turned up. The hours flew by and as the contractions got increasingly intensive, my mum came to support both me and my partner. It's safe to say I probably tried every form of pain relief at some point throughout the night including an epidural. Unfortunately for me, the epidural wasn't to be, it didn't fully work and by this point it was too late to try another. Before I knew it, it was my time to push and push I did for what felt like an eternity! Shortly after 12.30am the midwife requested a doctor. With the help of the wonderful doctor, midwife, birthing partners and a set of forceps our beautiful baby girl was born at 2.15am on 19.01.17 weighing 7lb 9oz. And as we were both doing great we were home the very same day. Hallie is our absolute world and we are absolutely delighted with her. She is a beautiful little girl who we feel very blessed to have in our lives. If you would like to share your birth story, please get in touch

Business

& Babies Words: Erin Tabinor

H

aving trained as makeup artist at the age of 16, I didn’t actually fulfil this dream until the grand old age of 24 when I decided to chuck in my reliable, and most importantly, pensionable job to become a full time makeup artist.

After a spell in bridal makeup and working in salons, I dipped my toe into the fashion and editorial side of things. After a while of testing with photographers and models to get my portfolio off the ground, I managed to land some major editorial credits for brands and designers like Topshop and Chanel Joan Elkayam, plus have my work featured in the likes of Vogue Italia. I juggle this with my weekend bridal and beauty clients and I can honestly say I love my job. As one can imagine, my job involves a heavy amount of travelling; as I write I have one hand on the keyboard and the other packing my suitcase for Paris this week. While I love my career and have worked very hard to be successful, it is very painful leaving my son at home. My boy George was born 16 November 2012, after an epic 3 day labour where I wondered if I was even actually pregnant. He pushes me to succeed on a daily basis and is one of my biggest supporters. George loves to regale his classmates with tales of my travels and can often be found playing with the glitters in my kit. On the days I am so tired I wonder what I’m doing, his face is enough for me to realise it is all for him. For the future, I would like to concentrate on more work locally and spend more time at home. I have recently teamed up with Girl Meets Brush to do short makeup courses to give women confidence when applying makeup and dates for these will be announced in the coming months.

‘Frugi goes Wild’

WIN 75

Frugi voucher

We interview Kirsty Hartley from Wild Things on her recent collaboration with Frugi.

to

1) Mummy and Me Magazine are huge fans of the Wild Things and Frugi brands - so it’s Closing Date fantastic news to see the 01.12.17 collaboration of these two gorgeous brands. How did the partnership come about?

info@ mummyandme magazine.co.uk

I was delighted when Lucy Jewson, Frugi’s founder contacted me at Wild Things to collaborate after seeing my sewing books. We talked about the synergy between our brands. I was looking to collaborate at some stage and Frugi was the perfect brand to work with.

30 |

3) How do the ‘Wild Things at Frugi’ pieces differ from your own brand products? For our collaboration we have taken elements from within the range and given the Frugi characters a lease of life, creating 3D styles with a twist, meaning the products are not only hard wearing and outstandingly soft and high quality, but they make dressing a breeze. 4) We love the entire range, but which piece is your favourite (if you had to pick one!)? I have to say my favourite is Rory the tiger, with his happy face and bold colour. The unicorn hoodie is also a winner.

2) Obviously there are many children’s clothing brands out there. What was it about Frugi that particularly struck a cord and made you interested in coming together?

5) What features can we expect from these clothes that make them perfect for any child’s wardrobe?

I was particularly drawn to Frugi’s commitment to ‘giving back’. From the environment and commitment to creating GOTS certified products, to the happiness of their own team at Frugi. As a UK made brand passionate about creating goods which support skills the UK has to offer I was impressed with their own brand mission. Sustainability is so important. That and the commitment to create fun but wearable design it was a winning combination.

The styles feature all of the playful elements we use for the Wild Things range, such as ears, and manes, with the addition of super snuggly hoodies and cool accessories, creating a full wardrobe of inspiring playful styles. Everything is designed for comfort and ease of dressing, with adjustable fastening for the perfect fit.

School Years

Ben Faulks

Mummy and Me chat to actor and writer Ben Faulks (best known for his role as Mr Bloom on BBC pre-school channel, CBeebies) on his work with the Early Years Nutrition Partnership developing ‘The Healthy Eating Song’ for early years practitioners to engage pre-schoolers in healthy eating.

Y

ou are best known for your CBeebies character 'Mr Bloom', what made you decide to work with the Early Years Nutrition Partnership and create The Healthy Eating Song? It’s a hugely positive scheme and for my part it was a question of well, why not? We all want our children to grow up healthy and this fundamentally begins with what they eat. With food it’s very much like you get out, what you put in.

So if they eat well not only are they getting what they need to grow but they’re more able to learn, play and generally be happier individuals.

The song was a great way of raising awareness about nutrition for children and I have really enjoyed writing it - we hope nursery leaders and parents are going to embrace it! As ‘Mr Bloom’ you are a great role model for encouraging “Tiddlers” to; embrace getting involved in projects, understanding how things are made, and to grow their own. Do you feel a certain responsibility to also educate children in eating healthy?

With my work on Mr Bloom’s Nursery the principle theme of the show is that of nurture. Whether it’s tending to vegetables to help them grow or the Tiddlers looking after the Veggies, much like an older sibling would. As a result the show brushes up against many other themes, with healthy eating being one of them. I wouldn’t say that healthy eating is the core message, more one that is tied up in the show as a whole. But that’s still a good thing because it’s clearly in there and sometimes if people don’t feel like they’re being told to do something, they’re more receptive to the possibility of doing it. What are YOUR favourite foods? I’m super happy eating ALL types of vegetables and love to make big stews throwing in as much veg variety as I can. Then, add a bit of chicken stock and some curry spices & you’ve got some fine dining ahead. If I had to choose a favourite vegetable it would probably be beetroot. Other than veg though I love Marmite and eggs on toast, every single curry dish under the sun and traditional cornish pasties. Mmm!

34 |

School Years Eventually, you’re hoping that The Healthy Eating Song will be adopted by nurseries and primary schools. How do you plan to reach out to Early Years Practitioners? Well we are telling all nurseries to tune in to the EYN Partnership channel on YouTube, where they can choose to listen to the version sung by me or the backing version if they want to add their own vocals. And then there is a karaoke version on eynpartnership.org, plus songsheets, which even have the ukulele chords if you want to do it my way! We are hoping people will send us clips of them singing the song in their nursery and at home, so that we can build a social movement behind The Healthy Eating Song! I’m looking forward to seeing those. In addition to The Healthy Eating Song, do you have any further projects in the pipeline to encourage children to eat well? In addition to the work I do with CBeebies I work with my wife who runs our theatre company, Plunge Boom. We’ve a handful of interactive shows for family audiences that actively invite the audience to roll up their sleeves and get involved in the action. All of our shows are based on a subversive view of

nature, for example, The Trolls Kitchen recruits a small band of children to go foraging for random ingredients in Little Red Riding Hood capes before bringing it back and using it to cook a meal fit for a Troll. While the Vegetables Nannies (which was the show that became Mr Bloom’s Nursery) has a group of gardeners / nannies looking after a family of tiny vegetables which the audience members help to care for. So, again much like the CBeebies show, there isn’t an explicit message about eating well but there are themes in the material that cross over. For more information about the Early Years Nutrition Partnership please visit eynpartnership.org

Daddy and Me

WRITTEN BY REGULAR COLUMNIST NEIL SINCLAIR A.K.A MALE Post-Natal Depression

MORALE: A commando dad’s secret weapon The Brief: Parenting is a hugely important, responsible and, ultimately, rewarding job. However, at times it can feel like an isolating, unrewarding and thankless task. Build and maintain high morale so that, if ‘down times’ come, you are prepared. What is morale? Morale is difficult to put into words but easy to feel. If you have high morale you will feel confident, enthusiastic and motivated to do the task(s) at hand. High morale is important because it helps you to be an effective parent, which in turn builds your confidence and enthusiasm. If you have a bad day, you see it for what it is: one bad day. It will not affect your long-term view of yourself as a good, capable parent and you will still feel motivated to be the best dad you can be. When you have low morale you may feel unable to cope or doubt your own abilities. A ‘down day’ will not be easily brushed off. It is difficult to be an effective parent in these circumstances. A Commando Dad regularly evaluates his performance and makes adjustments accordingly

Male Post-Natal Depression is a Real & Significant Issue in UK Ieso Digital Health Study Shows Stigma Still a Major Barrier to Men Seeking Help

1/4 of all dads at risk of paternal post-natal depression 57% say there is a stigma around male post-natal depression

65% of dads say it’s difficult to admit emotional health problems associated with parenting

Ieso offers discreet one-to-one therapy, delivered in real time using written (typed) conversation, in a secure virtual therapy room. Dads don’t have to go to a therapist’s office and they can also choose the time and location from where they access therapy. 64% of our therapy appointments happen outside office hours, which can accommodate dads who are working. They won’t experience a long waiting list either as patients are seen within 48 hours. They can also message between sessions and reread the therapy correspondence, keeping it fresh in their mind.

Objective: By the end of today’s briefing you will have a greater understanding of: * What morale is. * How to recognise when your morale is under attack. * How to build long-term morale. * How to maintain morale in challenging situations. * How to accept, and ask for, help. * The importance of a support network. You can start to improve your morale right now. Here’s how: How to build long-term morale There are four cornerstones to building morale for a Commando Dad: 1. Keep fit and healthy: Parenting takes a lot of energy. Make sure that you give yourself a head start by eating well and exercising. When you have very young at base camp, it’s very difficult to get a full night’s sleep. Establishing a sleep routine is very important. 2. Perfect your routine: A good routine, consistently executed, builds and maintains your sense of confidence and motivation. It reduced anxiety. It simply makes life easier. 3. Use your support network: There is not a lot of recognition for your hard work in parenting. Your trooper will never thank you for a great day or parenting (any more than you thanked your own parents when you were a MT (Mobile Trooper). It can seem like an unrewarding task. Your support network - family, friends and like-minded individuals - can acknowledge and share your successes. They will also support you through challenging times. Do not underestimate the positive effect of belonging to a network. 4. Be kind to yourself: Parenting means facing new challenges and experiences. Some days you will get it right, and some days you will get it wrong. Continue to increase your skills but do not be overcritical of your own abilities. If your trooper is loved, physically safe and healthy, then you are doing a great job, and you are continuing to get better by the day. It is important to keep good morale in the unit. A caring and supportive relationship is the foundation. Your positivity will make your trooper feel secure; they know nothing can faze you and that you are in control.

COMMANDO DAD TOP TIP Learn to understand the rule of sympathetic detonation - a chain reaction of emotions set off by you. If you are positive and happy, your kids will mirror this upbeat attitude. If you show them that you are upset, angry or frustrated, they will be too.
