The Really Useful Jargon Buster and Feature Explanation

The Really Useful Jargon Buster and Feature Explanation Some of the terminology can be quite confusing. So if you are buying a scooter for the first time, or simply need more detailed information on a feature, use this A-Z glossary which explains the more technical things you might want to know:

S

Standard feature - Look out for the S symbol. It means the feature comes as standard with the scooter.

Anti-roll back system S An anti-roll back system is a safety device which is used to prevent the scooter from rolling back when executing a hill start. All the ST scooters come with this system.

Anti-tipper S The anti-tipper is a device fitted to every ST scooter to prevent it from tipping back when going up hills.

Captain’s seat This is the ultimate driver’s seat. It is like sitting in an armchair and provides a high level of comfort and support on long journeys. The ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 all have a captain’s seat.

Class 2 scooter A Class 2 scooter has a top speed of 4 mph / 6 kph, and is suitable for riding on pavements or footpaths only. The ST#1, ST#2 and ST#3 are Class 2 scooters.

6

Class 3 scooter A Class 3 scooter has a top speed of 8 mph / 12 kph, and is suitable for riding on public roads, pavements and footpaths. You do not need to have a driving licence or take a driving test to drive a Class 3 scooter. Class 3 scooters can only however be used by a disabled person aged 14 or over. The ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 are Class 3 scooters.

Delta handlebar The Delta handlebar is shaped to increase comfort and reduce fatigue by enabling you to place your hands in a position which is best for you. It is fitted as standard on the ST#1, ST#5 and ST#6.

Drum brake This is the type of handbrake used on the ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6, and is similar to those on motor cars. It is fitted as an emergency braking device.

Freewheel lever S A freewheel level is a safety mechanism which allows you to move the scooter, such as from your driveway into your porch, without switching the motor on. Every ST scooter is fitted with this safety mechanism.

High-mount charging socket The high-mount charging socket is a feature whereby the socket to charge the battery is mounted on the handlebar (tiller). The convenient positioning of the socket ensures you don’t have to bend down. The ST#1, ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 come with this socket type. Also see Offboard battery charging and On-board battery charging.

High / Low speed selector All Class 3 ST scooters have a switch to select between the maximum legal pavement speed of 4 mph / 6 kph or the maximum 8 mph / 12 kph permitted on UK roads. Generally you should always have the selector set to low unless travelling for some distance on the road.

Integrated bumper Just because you cannot see a bumper, it doesn’t mean the scooter doesn’t have one! The ST#1, ST#2, ST#3, ST#4 and ST#6 have a robust metal structure behind the front shroud to protect the scooter in the event of a collision. The ST#5 scooter has an external heavy duty front bumper.

Your Journey STarts Here

Left hand / Right hand changeover By default the brake lever is on the right, however the lever can be switched to the left hand side to suit your needs. All Class 3 ST scooters have this feature.

Lumbar support This provides extra support for the lower back and is particularly beneficial when sitting in a scooter for long periods of time. Lumbar support is designed into the captain’s seat (see also Captain’s seat) on the ST#6.

Modesty panel This is the name for the bodywork on the front of the ST#6 scooter which houses the tiller and controls. It provides some weather protection, such as spray from road vehicles in wet conditions. The modesty panel on the ST#6 also incorporates some storage.

Off-board battery charging The off-board battery charging station is a handy device on the ST#2 and ST#3 scooters to allow you to charge the battery inside while leaving your scooter outside.

The Really Useful Jargon Buster and Feature Explanation

On-board battery charging The on-board battery charging station allows the batteries to be charged without removing them from the scooter. The ST#1, ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 scooters come with this feature. Also see High-mount charging socket and Off-board battery charging.

On-board diagnostics S All ST scooters use the world-leading Dynamics electronic control system to ensure your scooter gives you many years of reliable performance. This system also incorporates a diagnostics system to monitor the scooter and ensure it is working optimally. Should a fault occur, a fault code will flash on the tiller consol to indicate it requires attention from a technician.

Pneumatic assisted tiller The tillers (see Tiller for more information) on some scooters can be heavy, making it difficult to adjust the tiller so you can optimally reach and operate the controls. The ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 scooters however are fitted with a pneumatic damping system to make this smooth and effortless.

Quick release dismantling system The quick release dismantling system is a simple process which enables you to dismantle your scooter for transportation and storage. The ST#1, ST#2 and ST#3 all have this system.

8

Range This is the maximum distance the battery will take you on a full charge. The range of the battery can be adversely affected by a wide range of variables such as temperature, terrain, the battery’s condition, tyre pressure and your weight.

MAX RANGE

Seat adjustment options S The seats on the ST scooters come with a range of standard adjustments. Seat height and the distance between the armrests can be adjusted to match your personal build (excluding the armrests on the ST#6 which are angle adjustable only). The armrests can also be lifted up for easy transfer on and off the scooter. The seats fully rotate for easy mounting and dismounting (see Seat rotation) and can also be removed if required. On some models height adjustable armrests can be fitted as an optional extra, see Accessories on page 16. For all Class 3 scooters you can also slide the seat back and forth. This feature, combined with the tiller adjustment, allows the perfect seat-to-controls position to be achieved.

Seat rotation S The seats can rotate 360o to aid getting on and off the scooter easily and to provide a convenient position to do other tasks whilst remaining seated on the scooter. For added security the seat can lock into position every 45o. All ST scooters come with this feature. For other seat adjustment features refer to Seat adjustment options.

Split rim alloy wheels These lightweight but very strong metal wheels are similar to those on top-of-the-range cars. The rims split in half so punctureproof tyres can be fitted in place of the standard pneumatic tyres. The ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6 are fitted with these wheels.

Upright storage Clever design of the rear handle and shroud on the ST#2 and ST#3 scooters means they can stand on their rear ends to make them much easier to store, taking up far less floor space. Simply remove the seat and fully fold down the tiller.

Suspension Coil springs are used at the rear of the ST#4 scooter to provide a comfortable ride over uneven surfaces. On the ST#5 these can be adjusted to suit the driver. The ST#6 scooter has a very sophisticated system of oil damped springs at the rear and independent coil springs at the front, making it ideal for rough terrain.

Wireless battery box A wireless battery box means there are no plugs or wires connecting the battery to the scooter. This feature makes dismantling and assembling extremely quick and simple. The ST#1, ST#2 and ST#3 scooters have a wireless battery box. See also On-board battery charging and Off-board battery charging.

Thumb lever control The thumb lever control is the device used to power the ST scooters. You simply push forward with your thumb to go forwards and use your other thumb to go backwards.

Tiller S The tiller is simply another word for the scooter’s handlebar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions If you’ve never used a scooter before you’ll probably have lots of questions. To help you therefore, below is a list of questions people just like you ask us when they’re buying a new scooter. Of course, if there is anything else you want to know, you can always pop into your local Days Healthcare retailer, or call our customer service team on 01656 664700. 1. Will my scooter be easy to drive? Yes. Every ST scooter from Days Healthcare has been designed to be extremely easy to drive. Your local retailer will show you how to work your scooter and will answer any questions you have.

4. Can I use my scooter on the pavement?

8. What happens if I damage my scooter, or if it breaks down?

Yes. You can use your scooter on pavements and footpaths, but not cycle tracks. If you are driving a Class 3 scooter on pavements and footpaths you must not exceed 4 mph / 6 kph.

Simply call the retailer who supplied your scooter and an engineer will come out to you at a convenient time and place.

5. Will my scooter fit in my car boot?

No. An annual service at your local Days Healthcare retailer will make sure it stays in top condition.

2. Can I use my scooter on the road? You can use a Class 3 scooter on the road (see the ST#4, ST#5 and ST#6) and a Class 2 scooter (see the ST#1, ST#2 and ST#3) to cross a road. Please keep in mind that a Class 3 scooter can only be used by a disabled person aged 14 or over. You are not allowed to use bus lanes or the motorway. It is not recommended but you can use a Class 3 scooter on a dual carriageway, providing it is fitted with a flashing amber warning light.

The ST#1, ST#2, and ST#3 scooters can all be easily dismantled to fit in your boot. The ST#1 and ST#2 scooters however are lighter to lift and quicker and easier to dismantle. You can also fit all of the ST scooters, without any dismantling, into the back of a larger car such as an estate. To do this you will need to purchase a set of ramps (see page 16).

6. Do I need insurance? You must register a Class 3 scooter with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). It must be licensed in the disabled taxation class and display a disabled tax disc which must be renewed every year. There is no cost for this and if required, your local retailer can help you with filling in the form.

3. Do I need a driving licence? No. You do not need a driving licence to drive a scooter – even if you are using it on the road.

18

Although you do not have to be insured by law, we recommended you have at least third-party cover. It is also a good idea to be covered for fire, theft, and damage. Insurance is available from your local Days Healthcare retailer.

7. Will my ST scooter have a warranty? Yes. Every ST comes with a 12 month parts and labour warranty. For extra peace of mind, you can buy an extended two or three year warranty from your local Days Healthcare retailer.

9. Will my scooter need a lot of maintenance?

Tips for Safer Driving

Tips for Safer Driving You must follow the Highway Code for Mobility Scooter Users when driving your scooter (you can pick up a free copy of this code at your local Days Healthcare retailer). If you are using a scooter for the first time, or if it has been a while since you have driven on the road, it’s a good idea to go on a training course. Please ask your local Days Healthcare retailer for more information about courses near you.

10 tips for safer driving: 1) 2) 3)

Take extra care when you cannot see ahead, such as when you are approaching a corner or where a wall or hedge is restricting your view. Always look out for pedestrians and other road users. Pedestrians may not see or hear you. You must make sure you don’t run into anyone or cause any damage with your scooter.

4) 5) 6) 7)

It’s a good idea to wear a fluorescent tabard to increase your visibility to others. Even if you have a Class 3 scooter, try to avoid very busy roads. When you are passing parked cars, look out for doors opening. You must give way to pedestrians on crossings.

8)

Always obey traffic lights and other road signals and instructions.

9) Keep to the left when driving on roads. 10) Toto turn right, it may be safer turn on to the pavement and use a pedestrian crossing to cross the road. If there is no pavement, it may be safer to stop on the left and wait for a safe gap in the traffic.

We hope you enjoy the extra freedom and independence your new gives you!
