Spotlight teaches mental health techniques

ARC position applications for spring now available

Spotlight will teach coping methods to combat seasonal depression at their “Summertime Sadness” event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Union 219.

Spotlight aims to provide methods that will help keep students in a positive state of mind. All students are welcome to attend to learn more about creating healthy techniques. For more information about the event, contact Debra O’Reilly at doreilly@ucmo.edu.

The Office of Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support is hiring Academic Resource Coaches for the spring semester.

ARCs are undergraduate student peer coaches who provide direct assistance and coaching to students with academic concerns. ARCs can live on campus as residence hall ARCs or off campus as commuter ARCs. Residence hall ARCs receive housing for a bed in a double room. All ARCs receive a $500 stipend and a $350 meal credit. Positions are posted at ucmo. jobs.edu. Candidates must attend an information session. The last available information session is at 5 p.m. Thursday in Dockery 208. It's On Us organization encourages pledging The "It's On Us" organization was founded in 2016 with a dozen members in an effort to find a solution to ending sexual violence on college campuses around the nation. According to the national organization's website, 11.2 percent of all students experience rape or sexual assault, with females being four times more likely to become a victim. The UCM group wants to follow the national campaign, which consists of consent education, increasing bystander intervention,

and creating an environment that supports survivors.

A.J. Majino and Kraig McCoy, founders of the UCM "It's On Us" group, claims the group seeks to educate the campus through events featuring speakers and informational tables, which have been provided throughout the fall semester.

Majino states that campus groups and individuals like Mentoring, Advocacy, and Peer Support (MAPS), University Health Center, and UCM Counseling Center are all "amazing resources."

Students wanting to learn more about the UCM "It's On Us" group can attend one of the meetings or e-mail Majino at ajm98100@ucmo.edu.

Congresswoman Hartzler to speak at ribbon cutting in Warrensburg

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler will be attending and speaking at the ribbon cutting of the Whitfield Leadership Center at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

Jim McNamara, the founder and executive chairman of the Whitfield Leadership Center, Inc., said the event was planned for Veterans Day because of Whitfield’s involvement in the Navy.

McNamara said Missouri Representatives Dan Houx and Dean Dohrman will be present and will present a proclamation from the state.

“Whitfield was a UCM alumnus that

had a tremendous impact on the community,” McNamara said.

The learning center was established to honor the lifetime legacy of leadership of Jim Whitfield, who was a Warrensburg native and a UCM Distinguished Alumni.

“The Whitfield Leadership Center was a non-profit organization established on the training of student leaders,” McNamara said. “The center is setup to carry on his work with high school and college students and students in the community.”

McNamara said Whitfield played a big part in educating Warrensburg youth through the American Legion, Boys State and Phi Sigma Kappa.

Teresa Shane, the commander or of the Warrensburg VFW Post 2513, will be rep-

resenting the post at the event.

“I think people get so busy with their lives that they forget how we got to where we are and we’re losing historical perspective,” Shane said.

She said the Veteran Day activities will be a good reminder for the community that our veterans are heroes.

Richard Maxwell, one of the escorts with the American Legion riders, will be escorting Hartzler to and from locations throughout the day.

Hartzler will also be visiting the remodel and reopening of the American Legion.

“This is important because we’re honoring veterans that are serving as of right now and the legion is changing its direction,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell said the American Legion is moving toward having more involvement in youth programs in Warrensburg such as Boys State and youth sports.

Majority of students not applying for available scholarships

Fewer than 25 percent of some 14,000 students enrolled at UCM apply for the approximately 1,000 scholarships available on campus through the MoCents system.

Only about 3,200 applications have been submitted in the last year.

MoCents is the student scholarship application system at UCM. This website is loaded with scholarships for students of many backgrounds, ethnic groups and majors, as well as nontraditional students in graduate and undergraduate levels.

However, as enrollment increases each year, the number of scholarships unclaimed remains high, leaving hundreds of scholarships worth thousands of dollars unclaimed. The exact amount is uncertain due to the variety of scholarships available across multiple departments.

“The main goal of the foundation is to

award as much money as possible, even if I have to chase them down,” said Vicki Voskovitch, financial aid counselor for the UCM Foundation.

As deadlines approach and there are unclaimed scholarship dollars, Voskovitch said she searches for students who are eligible for remaining scholarships and sends emails to inform them about the scholarship money waiting to be claimed.

Most of the advertising for scholarships on MoCents is done via email, through advertisements posted on the school’s website and through flyers posted on campus.

Voskovitch said she is not sure why so few students apply because they have worked for years to make the MoCents webpage easy to navigate and as efficient as possible.

MoCents replaced the paper system that required students to download individual forms or visit specific departments, according to the university’s website.

“The old process involved students having to download each application, print it, attach a transcript to it and then drop it off at whatever office or department was responsible for awarding the scholarship,” Voskovitch said.

Through MoCents, students create a personalized account and fill out a onetime application that matches them for all scholarships they qualify for based on information they provide, including major/ minor, grade point average and financial need.

Sophomore education major Allison Casey said many students are unaware of the site or feel if they apply they may not even get it.

Voskovitch said she is planning to update the MoCents webpage over winter break by adding new scholarship endowments that were just created.

Overall, there are about 550 smaller scholarships available through each department and around 450 family schol-

arship endowments created by more than 300 different families. Voskovitch said it costs $20,000 to start a named scholarship endowment.

“The process then takes about a full calendar year,” Voskovitch said. “After the $20,000 is given, the fund has to collect interest for a year and the first scholarship award is the interest acquired, which is about $750 or the cost of one class.”

She said what makes UCM Foundation scholarships different from financial aid is that the student can decide when they would like to use the money. They can also split their scholarship per semester or use it all at once if they graduate in less than two semesters Foundation scholarships found on MoCents can also be used toward summer classes while financial aid money usually does not allow students to take summer classes.

WHO’S BEHIND THE KNOCK? THE PERSONALITIES BEHIND MORMON MISSIONARIES

Knock, knock, knock.

“Hello. Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ?”

“No, thank you.”

Slam!

That is the noise Dace Daniels and Keaton Hiatt hear on a regular basis as two Mormon missionaries here in Warrensburg, knocking on stranger's doors.

Daniels, 20, and Hiatt, 19, are two Mormon elders on their mission trip for two years from Utah. They reside in Warrensburg but travel to surrounding cities to spread their beliefs and teach people who want to learn more about Mormonism and the church of Jesus Christ Latter DaySaints.

But there’s more to their personality that people don’t find out about. People might think that Mormons are a whole different breed but they’re just like anyone else.

They have all kinds of interests, hobbies and passions outside of their Mormon religion.

“I love music, almost any type of music,” Daniels said. “I played the piano, I love singing. I sing in choir, take voice lessons and things like that.”

Being a Mormon missionary, they can only listen to certain types of music, mainly gospel. Daniels said he sometimes misses listening to regular music while on his mission.

“Man, I haven’t listened to real music in 16 months,” he said. “Sometimes I’m like ‘Man, I kinda wanna just listen to one of those songs right now. Some really good music sounds really good right now,’” he said.

“I do definitely miss music.

Obviously I’ll listen to it when I’m back home.”

Daniels’ favorite styles

are indie and classical music.

“In general, I’m a pretty peaceful person,” Daniels said.

Hiatt’s interests are more involved around sports. He said he enjoys basketball and played on the team in high school.

“Before my mission, I loved basketball.

I could play a ton of basketball, all the time. It was so fun,” he said.

He also enjoys football, baseball, track and playing Fifa, a soccer video game.

“Growing up, I played football, basketball and baseball. After my freshman year, I did track. For a little bit, I played tennis.

I play a lot of video games too.”

And of course, they have many favorite movies. Daniels said he enjoys “Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit” and “Harry Potter” series. Hiatt said his favorite movies are the Jason Bourne films.

Different perspectives offered at “Meet the Mormons”

When the Secular Student Alliance started planning the “Meet the Mormons” event, they didn’t know what to expect.

The Mormon religion seemed a mystery to them. When they finally met the Mormons, they all got to discover each other’s differing perspectives.

SSA hosted the event Thursday, Nov. 2, with four Mormon missionaries— two Mormon elders, Dace Daniels and Keaton Hiatt – and two sisters, Mackenzie Halm and Heather Brinegar.

The Mormon missionaries first gave a presentation on their general beliefs of Mormonism, then they answered questions from the SSA group. Kayla Watson, SSA co-president, said the event had some

great discussion with interesting questions and answers from both sides.

“My favorite part was how naturally our group and the Mormons interacted.

There’s always the awkward initial period when two groups meet but I was really happy with how it ended up,” Watson said. “We had some laughs and overall I think the discussions felt comfortable and conversational.”

The main purpose of “Meet the Mormons” was to learn about the Mormon religion, such as what they believe, the history and how they feel about conversational subjects.

“The most educational part for me was when the Mormons told us their beliefs on death and the afterlife,” Watson said.

“I didn’t know much about it before the meeting and I don’t think the other SSA

members did either.”

Daniels said even though the event was a smaller turnout, they were glad the group seemed very interested and asking a lot of different types of questions.

“The questions were really good and we enjoyed answering them, the people there seemed genuinely interested so that is always a plus,” Daniels said. “Our favorite part of the event was how involved everyone was.”

Hiatt said the event helped them as Mormons learn more about the SSA group’s more secular points of view and he really enjoyed teaching them about theirs.

“We hope they learned more about what we believe and we hope that they had their questions answered,” Hiatt said.

“We also hope we were able to put down some false beliefs.”

Hiatt and Daniels said they would come to an event like this again, if given the opportunity. Watson said the SSA group will likely have another event like “Meet the Mormons” in the future.

“Now that we’ve done a fairly small event, I’d like to try it again but promote the event outside of our own group,” Watson said. “Perhaps get the religious studies department involved, or other religious groups on campus.”

Watson said the SSA group learned that younger people in the Mormon religion are not very different from them, contrary to what she believed. She said they have similar interest and goals and they strive to be accepting of other people’s views.

“Even if their methods and ideas differ from ours, we can still get along and try to understand each other,” Watson said.

“Last week we went to an antique shop

and got ice cream,” Daniels said.

He said one day during their mission, they even played with “human hamster balls” with a group of other missionaries.

“We all had one of those and we were rolling around playing soccer. It was really fun and people were flying everywhere. We do fun things like that,” Daniels said.

MacKenzie Halm from Utah and Heather Brinegar from Arizona are two 20-year-old sister Mormon missionaries who know Daniels and Hiatt

from the church.

“I think they’re awesome. They take their calling seriously but they’re also kind of goofy while they’re at it,” Brinegar said. “I just think it’s cool that they can kind of still be themselves at the same time. I think that’s a strength for them.”

Halm said they both work with Daniels and Hiatt and learn how to better teach people about the Gospel themselves.

“We think they’re fantastic missionaries. They work really hard. They truly love other people. They wanna help serve the Lord,” Halm said.

Daniels and Hiatt are on this mission to help others, teach people about their faith and become better people, by giving up certain things in life for their religion.

During their two year mission, Mormons must give up many everyday things such as TV, movies, music, videogames,

books, newspapers, social media and much more. They can’t drink, smoke, date people, or be out past 10 p.m.

Daniels said the biggest thing for him was giving up what he wanted to do in order to do what God wants.

“It’s still an ongoing struggle because I’m a person. I want what I want,” Daniels said. “I’m definitely not a perfect human being.”

Daniels and Hiatt both said they hope for a world where they can go knocking on a door and not get a slam in their face.

They want to talk to people, get to know them and be kind to them.

Talk focuses on veterans mental health

Issues of suicide, lack of resources and a lack of preparation for soldiers returning from war.

These were the main issues addressed during Tuesday’s Let’s Talk event hosted

by The Spotlight at the Military and Veterans Success Center.

About 25 students, staff, reservists, veterans and Veterans Affairs dependents attended the event.

At least six of those participates said they suffered the loss of a friend or family member due to suicide.

Many of the participates agreed that the Department of Veterans Affairs should do better when providing proper resources for service members and their families during and after deployment.

A female student said the VA puts in a tremendous amount of work when preparing active duty members for war, yet they struggle when it comes time to prepare them to return home.

Another student said the department

gives basic information about suicide but it’s not enough.

“How many times have we had the 30-minute don’t-kill-yourself brief? It gets old hearing the leaders say that,” said Branden Willer, junior and an Army E4 specialist.

More than 20 veterans a day commit suicide, according to Veterans Affairs.

Jeff Huffman, director of military and veteran services, said he lost two military friends to suicide. He said he knew he needed to reach out to one of them specifically because he hadn’t heard from him in a while, but when he did it was too late.

Huffman said he suffered from guilt and he blamed himself. He said building and keeping relationships with a veteran could save a life.

“I know now that I couldn’t have prevented it, maybe I could’ve, maybe, I don’t know, but I think relationships are important,” he said. “When we feel alone or hopeless is when we get to the dark area.”

He said when someone is in a dark place, that is when it becomes difficult to convince them that things will be OK. Huffman said being the child of a mil-

itary service member can also be tough.

However, they are often overlooked in the situation. He said when he decided to re-enlist his son told him, “Dad, you have already served. You are done. We need you.”

“I was joining up again and for two solid days my son wouldn’t talk to me and so I went to my wife and said, ‘What’s wrong with Jacob?’ And she said, ‘You never even asked him,’” Huffman said.

He said those parent and child relationships are also just as important.

In addition, the participants discussed how the media portrays the military. Brandon Marshall, freshman and military dependent, said not everything you see in the media about the military is true, but there are some outlets that represent the military in the right way.

“I wouldn’t say that the media is having completely just a negative impact on veterans because there have been movies that have been made about true stories out there that show how kind, really hardworking, and unbroken that the military is,” Marshall said.

Huffman said it’s difficult for the media to portray the military perfectly because

there’s only so much they are told and can see.

“The tough part about the media effect is that it’s a snippet in time,” Huffman said. “It’s one piece of something. It’s not service in its entirety.”

Veterans, reservists and dependents offered advice on how the university and students can help. Marshall said the university should have an event that educates students and staff about military life.

Willer said people should remember to be patient with military service members because the life of living on base is different from living in the civilian world.

“We just came back from a stressful situation, so we’re going to be a little bit angrier than we were before,” Willer said.

“But that usually peters out a little.”

At the conclusion of the program, Huffman said the event was a success.

“I don’t think there are any answers or solutions here today, but it’s a good thing to talk about it. It’s a start,” Huffman said.

STUDENTS SHARE STORIES AT STORY SLAM

Students shared personal stories of what it’s like to be in the 21st century at the second annual Story Slam Tuesday in the Elliott Student Union.

Melody Niesen, an instructor in the English and philosophy department, helped plan the Story Slam. She said story slams typically consist of stories that are one to three minutes long and are centered around a theme.

“It’s really similar to a poetry slam… but instead of sharing poetry, we share short stories,” Niesen said. “I think it’s pretty open to your interpretation of what you think a short story is.”

She said she thought the Story Slam was a great chance for students to share their stories and have their voices be heard.

“I think it’s really important for everyone on campus, particularly students, to realize that they have importance and that their stories and their voices matter,” Niesen said. “And this is a really great way to showcase people’s talents and let some of those stories be told that might otherwise be hidden.”

Niesen said the theme, “What it is TO BE… in the 21st Century,” was based on the One Campus One Book common reading program of the 2017-2018 UCM school year. She said the book this year is “Children of the New World” by Alexander Weinstein, which features a dystopic future that relies on technology.

“We wanted people to think (of) what specifically makes them, them, and how is that unique or how is that connected to living in the 21st century,” Niesen said.

UCM junior Cayla Thurman shared her poem titled, “You Up Text,” at the slam. In the poem, Thurman discusses freedom in America today by presenting the idea of freedom as a man she desires.

“Freedom let me be / I wait all day to receive that ‘you up’ text / knowing exactly what falls next and no ladies I’m not talking about sex,” Thurman said in her

poem. “I’m talking about the obligation that he gave / that somehow he’s neglected to give me / the demands that he can’t see / He hides behind the demise of my ancestors / cries knowing truthfully where his loyalty already lies / and I am kept in silent protest while he refuses to address / that the melanin in my skin may have too many preexisting conditions that just bother him.”

Thurman ended the poem by explaining herself.

“You might be wondering, ‘Girl, why haven’t you left?’ / And it’s simple, his name is Freedom and I don’t want to live in a world where I can’t be with him,” Thurman said in her poem. “And someday my success will be bigger than this oppression can oppress, and as I said earlier, being with him is an exhale out of this reality into a world that was not built for me, but you bess believe / that this world will be meant for me – with or without his intent for me.”

Thurman said she wanted to write a story about being an African American woman in America, but had a mental conflict while writing the poem.

“I also wanted to do spoken word about how it’s really hard to find an equivalent male partner in African American males due to oppression and all that other types

of stuff, so I was like, ‘How can I make those two join?’” Thurman said.

Thurman said she was able to combine the two ideas by talking about freedom as a man that a girl is in love with.

“I wanted the audience to understand and get the feeling of passion of being in love with somebody or wanting somebody that’s not really yours,” Thurman said.

She said her biggest fear was that people wouldn’t understand the comparison and also might be offended by it. She said she didn’t want to disrespect the opportunities she’s been given because she thinks there are freedoms in America.

“But at the same time, it’s like everything that I have – every freedom that I was given as a woman and for being black is not really mine,” Thurman said. “I think in the poem I said something like, ‘I’m kept in a silent protest,’ which is the truth.

So, it’s like, yes, I’m proud of everything that I have, but I’m not happy of how it was given to me or that it even had to be given to me.”

Thurman said she had been waiting to get the courage to get on a stage and say spoken-word poetry and the Story Slam was the perfect platform for it.

“It was very awesome,” Thurman said.

“I think the environment was beautiful, and I’m happy that they have outlets like

that for people to just tell their stories.”

Freshman Kimberly Wagner told a story of a time she realized she wasn’t connected to her friends anymore.

“December 24, 2016. I’m sitting in the waiting room of a hospital in Lees Summit, Missouri. Waiting to see my mom.

She was in the hospital because she was weak from her battle with cancer,” Wagner said at the Story Slam. “I’m sitting there in the waiting room, staring at the Christmas tree in the window, and one thing is running through my mind: Who can I call? I realized then that I didn’t have a friend to call because I wasn’t close to any of my friends anymore.”

Wagner told the crowd that social media has allowed people to connect with others from all around the world, but it has also made people less connected.

“It allows us to just see the good parts of people’s lives, not always their true selves.

We see what they want us to see,” Wagner said. “I now have close friends who I know I can call when things go wrong, and things have gotten better, but I challenge you to connect deeper with your friends so you always have someone to call.”

Wagner said she participated in the Story Slam because she wanted people to know her story and understand where she was coming from.

“At the very beginning it was difficult for me to talk about because I haven’t really talked about it in front of a bunch of strangers before,” Wagner said. “I couldn’t look at anybody because I was so nervous. I was looking at my paper the whole time, but I got through it. I’m happy I did it though.”

Niesen said she thinks the Story Slam is a great community event that leaves people feeling uplifted and that it’s cool to see students share their voices and life experiences.

“Helping students ¬¬– helping everyone – recognize that no matter who you are, everyone has a story that’s worth telling and everyone has a story worth listening to,” Niesen said.

The University of Central Missouri Center for Religious Studies hosted the third annual Trading Moon Pow Wow Saturday, Nov. 4, in the UCM Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

The pow wow featured traditional Native American gourd dancing demonstrations performed in full traditional regalia that narrated Native American dancing culture. The event also included a meal for participants, information booths, and displayed Native American crafts and merchandise that were available for purchase.

Support for the 2017 Trading Moon Pow Wow has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council and the Missouri Humanities Council, state agencies. Additional support has been provided by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the Department of Sociology, Gerontology, and Cross-Disciplinary Studies; the Department of English and Philosophy; The Center for Religious Studies and the Department of Communication, according to a news release.

Grand entries were followed by intertribal dances. The host drums for the pow wow were Big Soldier Creek on the northern drum, with head singer Trilby Wahwasuck, and The Young Bucks on the southern drum, with head singer A. J. Esau. Orlando Begay or Kayenta, Ariz was Head Man, and Aliey Showtalker from Gainesville, Missouri, was Head Lady.

Bob Woolery from Sedalia, Missouri, was head gourd dancer, and Kilan Jacobs out of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, was the arena director.

A Review:

‘Thor: Ragnorok’

Marvel appears to have done it again. The recently released “Thor: Ragnorok” has received success from critics and audience members. This marks the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the third in the Thor series, and the fifth of phase three for the franchise. In “Thor: Ragnorok”, Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, must battle Hela, the Norse Goddess of Death, as she tries to conjure Asgard and all the other realms.

This film features several new characters, but some familiar ones as well.

Hulk/Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, and Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, are main characters, and even Dr. Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, makes an appearance.

My favorite part was seeing Thor, Hulk and Loki on screen again; it’s been a few years. I also thought those characters, including some others, had interesting story arcs. I like how they have evolved over the course of several movies. Plus, seeing Loki’s fear of the Hulk, due to their last encounter, is pretty funny.

To be honest, the first two Thor movies were mediocre. Both were arguably just filler, killing time until the next Avengers movie came out. They were okay and kind of forgettable. Strangely, I thought “Thor: Ragnorok”, was pretty good. Rarely is the third movie

better than either of the previous ones. It’s like the Iron Man series, only in reverse.

However, there is a downside to “Ragnorok” that bothered me at first. I have a friend who joked that this movie should be called “Guardians of The Galaxy 3.”

He has a point. This film, and several other Marvel films have tried to copy the “Guardians of The Galaxy” style. Since “Guardians of The Galaxy” was such a big hit, other films have been heavy influenced by it. This movie is proof of that. For example, “Thor: Ragnorok” is filled with a lot of comedy, fun action scenes, colorful alien worlds and a classic hit song. While this can be distracting at times, it doesn’t hinder the movie’s quality. The story is satisfying and so are the battle scenes.

Like some other Marvel films, sometimes the comedy is good, and sometimes it just isn’t. Some audience members may find the constant jokes in “Thor: Ragnorok” to be annoying, others will find them to be hilarious. In truth, I felt both emotions while watching it.

Marvel has a bad habit of creating mediocre and forgettable villains. Hela isn’t mediocre, but she isn’t that memorable.

To her credit, she does cause a lot of destruction. Thor or Asgard will never be the same. It’s worth mentioning that Jeff Goldblum’s villain, Grandmaster, has a few funny scenes.

ban’s, Skurge the Executioner, had bigger roles. Both are talented actors. But then again, their parts in the movie served the story well enough.

Like other Marvel films, there are a few unanswered questions. For instance, where was Lady Sif, played by Jaime Alexander? She was Thor’s warrior love interest, and constantly fights in the name of Asgard. Yet in the movie where Asgard is invaded, she is nowhere to be seen. Thor’s other love interest, Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, doesn’t appear either.

For 2017, Marvel appears to be on a winning streak with their most recent installments. They appear to be unable to do any wrong. Of course, that’s not completely true. Like I said, the first two Thor movies aren’t that good, and I still want a refund for those “Iron Man” sequels.

“Thor: Ragnorok” is a good movie, and a worthy entry in the franchise. However, it’s not one of the best. If I made a top five list for the MCU, “Thor: Ragnorok” wouldn’t be on the list, though it would be an honorable mention.

If you’re a fan of the other Marvel films, you’ll like this latest addition. If you’re a movie goer that’s looking for something more intelligent, odds are you might not appreciate this film that much. Personally, I enjoyed it, and I look forward to the next Marvel film.

An overview of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a historic franchise with many films and spinoffs ahead. Since 2008, Marvel’s films have been hitting theaters, some even breaking box office records. With the recent release of “Thor 3: Ragnorok,” it’s only fitting that an overview was in order.

This will cover the Marvel movies so far, along with their TV and Netflix series. The MCU is split in three main parts: phase one, phase two and phase three. There are films planned for after phase three, but that future is uncertain.

Marvel has made movies before, but the MCU didn’t officially begin until 2008, with “Iron Man.” At the end of the movie, in one of Marvel’s now famous end credit scenes, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, appears. He then asks Tony Stark/ Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., if he would consider being a part of the “Avengers Initiative”. From that moment on, audience members knew that more Marvel movies were on the way. Marvel Studios, or Disney Studios as I should say, spent the next few years making the other heroes of the Avengers’ team. They gave each hero a stand-alone movie, establishing the characters. Audiences were introduced to Thor, Captain America and the Hulk, although Marvel would like to pretend this movie never happened, due to its quality.

Other heroes, such as Hawkeye and Black Widow, appeared as side characters in films as well. This sadden some fans who wished to see them in their own stand-alone films. Finally, after four years of waiting, everyone appeared side by side in “The Avengers.” The longtime gamble

payed off. “The Avengers” was a huge success, breaking box office records. After that, it was official that Marvel films were here to stay.

It’s worth noting that not every Marvel comic book character is in the MCU. In the past, Marvel Studios gave their characters’ movie rights to other companies.

X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Deadpool went to Fox while Spider-Man went to Sony. When Disney bought out Marvel, like they did with Lucas Entertainment, but they didn’t have the movie rights for all of the Marvel characters. This is why Wolverine can’t be seen fighting against the Hulk on screen – I for one would love to see that.

Moving on, Marvel went forward with phase two of their movie franchise. These next films had interesting results. Despite making a killing at the box office, “Iron Man 3” received mixed reviews. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” reviews were not stellar either. This prompted writer and director, Joss Whedon, to quit working for the studio. Surprisingly, different films became successful. “Captain America: Winter Soldier” has become more than just filler, which some solo Marvel films feel like. “Captain America: Winter Soldier” is arguably the best movie of the franchise, along with another movie, “Guardians of The Galaxy.” The movie is extremely popular even though it is based off of a comic series few people had ever read. With “Ant-Man”, phase two was over.

During phase two, Marvel created several series for television, with “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” and “Marvel’s Agent Carter”. Neither of these became as successful as the movies. “Agent Carter” was canceled after two seasons, but “Agents of Shield” is still running, being currently one of the most popular late night TV shows. Marvel’s Netflix series are a differ-

ent story. “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” have received critical acclaim. However, they are different from the Marvel films.

They both feature R-rated violence and deal with darker subject matter. This is

“Captain America: Civil War” was the first film in phase three. It featured large scale battles between all of the superheroes. It also included new heroes such as Black Panther, and the long awaited Spider-Man. Sony attempted to make their own cinematic universe; this one would be based around Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield. But “Amazing Spider-Man 2” was given mixed reviews. In the end, Sony allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. Phase three continued with four more films: “Dr. Strange”, “Guardians of The Galaxy”, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and most recently, “Thor: Ragnorok.”

More Netflix series were released based on other Marvel characters. While “Luke Cage” and season two of “Daredevil” were met with positive reviews, “Iron Fist” was not. Regardless, all four superheroes featured on Netflix appeared together in “The Defenders.” It was “The Avengers” on the small screen. Unlike the movies years of buildup, “The Defenders” received mixed reviews, but “The Defenders” might as will be a masterpiece when compared to

“Marvel’s Inhumans”. It was Marvel’s latest TV series, showing beings, known as inhumans, that evolved from humans.

The TV show currently has an 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re wondering what the difference between the mutants from X-Men and the inhumans is… I don’t really know. It’s overcomplicated. I just know that Fox still owns X-Men, and not the Inhumans.

However, phase three is far from over.

After next year’s “Black Panther”, the next film that will be released “Avengers: Infinity War.” This features all of the main Marvel characters side by side, as they fight the biggest battle of the franchise.

It’s predicted that several heroes will not survive. They will also have Thanos as the villain, which is about time; we’ve seen him sit on a chair for the past five years.

Having dozens of movies set in the same universe is something that has never truly been done before, at least not on this scale. This franchise deserves credit for that. Many of these movies can feel like fun summer blockbusters, and nothing more. Still, there’s several very good movies; some are the best superhero films ever made – still not as good as “The Dark Knight.”

All in all, I love some of the movies from this franchise. “Iron Man” introduced me to superheroes and “The Avengers” is my one of my favorites because of nostalgia and one of my best movie-going experiences. Based on their most recent films, I would say that the future of the MCU is looking good. If they keep it up, there will be an epic climax at the end of phase three.

I hope this franchise ages well because several of these movies are worth remembering.

UCM storms to 52-24 win over Northeastern State

The University of Central Missouri Mules came into Saturday’s game against the Northeastern State RiverHawks with a record of 6-3 and needing to win out to maintain playoff hopes. Northeastern State came looking to build off their first victory of the season a week ago against Missouri Southern. The game kicked off at 1 p.m. with the temperature around 50 degrees.

The RiverHawks won the coin flip and elected to defer their selection to the second half, so the Mules received the opening kickoff. Franklin Hunt ran the kickoff to the enemy 46-yard line. Quarterback Brooke Bolles took the field and rifled a pass to the middle of the field, which was intercepted by the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks couldn’t take advantage of the defensive effort, going threeand out after losing 6 yards on the drive.

The Mules took over on their own 25 looking to avenge their first drive mistake.

Bolles immediately looked to use his legs to get his squad on the scoreboard, rushing for a first down right away. Devante Turner ripped off a 28-yard run to set up an impressive Brooke Bolles touchdown scramble.

kick, the Mules had a 7-0 lead. Northeastern took over looking to match the score, and that's exactly what they did. The passing game, led by quarterback Cade Yeager, looked very impressive on the drive.

Yeager hit Reshawn Eubanks for a 46-yard touchdown bomb, and with the point after, tying the game.

The Mules’ high powered offense continued to roll on their next possession. Koby Wilkerson led the charge with a string of nice runs, the last being a 5-yard touchdown dash which gave the Mules a 14-7 edge.

The Mules’ defense dominated the Riverhawks offense on the following drive, forcing a three and out and opening the door for the team to pull ahead. That’s where the Mules’ all-time leader in receptions, Jaylen Zachery, came in and caught two passes for 37 yards to move the chains.

Koby Wilkerson caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Brooke Bolles, who shuffled around to get room to throw a nice pass to give the Mules a 21-7 lead. The touchdown put the RiverHawks in a mustscore situation. Unfortunately for them, the Mules’ defense had other plans. After Abdul ran for 23-yards, the Mules stifled the opposing offense. Monteze Lattimore deflected a pass to end the drive.

The Mules then sustained a lengthy offensive drive, but came away with nothing as their field goal attempt was blocked. The

RiverHawk offense was unable to capitalize on the special team’s effort, going three-and-out. This put the Mules offense back on the field quickly.

Wilkerson and Bolles worked their way down the field, looking like a dynamic duo.

Bolles scrambled 23 yards to paydirt for the second time of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 28-7.

The next two drives of the game were scoreless, and the Mules lost a fumble after Bolles was hit from behind. The fumble gave the RiverHawks their chance to score, doing so on a pass to Zac King, who had the best game of his career Saturday. The score cut the lead to 28-14.

The Mules wanted to get in the end zone once more before halftime, but ultimately settled for a field goal to take a 31-14 lead into the locker room.

The second half began with a quick, scoreless RiverHawk possession. The Mules moved their way all the way from their own 4 yard line to the enemy two before Wilkerson fumbled the ball, recovered by the RiverHawks.

The rare turnover gave the RiverHawks the break they needed, and they didn't squander the chance. Yeager and King hooked up for several catches on the drive to set up a 19-yard field goal that made the score 31-17.

The Mules couldn't muster any points on the following possession, but their defense

forced a RiverHawk three-and-out. When the Mules got the ball back, Kyrion Parker showed what he could do, taking a catch 41 yards. The offense kept trucking down the field and capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by Wilkerson.

The RiverHawks found themselves down 38-17 and needing a touchdown to stay in the game. Their offense was helped out by three devastating penalties on the Mules, and finally scored with a pass to Isaiah Upshaw.

With another Mules score likely putting the game away, Devonte Turner got the call to show why he's near the top of the MIAA rushing leaderboard. Turner ran for a big first down and later a 12-yard touchdown to give his team a 45-24 advantage.

The RiverHawks’ next drive was a quick one, with Tyron Taylor intercepting Yeager’s pass.

The Mules’ offense had some more fireworks left in them, leading a nice drive to set up a Steven Ford TD run. The run set the score to 52-24, which would be the final after the Mules recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Mules coach Jim Svoboda commented after the game that his team is maintaining their hopes for the MIAA playoffs. For this weekend’s game at Lindenwood is a must win. The game will be the Mules final regular season game of the 2017 season.

The Mules took third place overall at the Central Region meet last weekend in Kearney, Nebrasda, which was just enough to earn themselves a spot at Nationals. Shadrack Kipngetich was the top-finisher for UCM, coming in 14th place and earning All-Region honors.

Adams State sits atop the list with 200 points and eight first place votes. Colorado Mines, Grand Valley State, Chico State, and Southern Indiana round out the top-five.

Fellow MIAA school Missouri Southern jumped into the rankings this week. They went from unranked all the way up to No. 18 after placing third at the MIAA Championships and second at the Regional Championships.

Central Missouri will travel to Evansville, Indiana for the Nationals Championships Saturday, Nov. 18. The mules will run a 10K race which starts at 11:30 a.m. CST.

Volleyball remains ninth in region rankings Central Missouri went 2-0 last week, upping their record to 22-7 for the season. They remained 19th in the AVCA Rankings and also haven't moved in the NCAA Regional Rankings, coming in at No. 9 for the second straight week.

Wednesday will be the final rankings, which will include matches through this weekend only. The NCAA will announces the field of 64 Monday, November 20.

This week concludes the MIAA regular season. The Jennies are home one final time at 7 p.m., Friday, and they will celebrate senior night. The season concludes Saturday in Joplin, Missouri, against Missouri Southern. UCM has clinched a spot in next week's MIAA Tournament. Opening round matchups will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The semifinals and finals will be played on the campus of the highest remaining seed, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 17-18.

Mules football sits 10th in central region In the final regional rankings of the 2017 regular season, Mules football dropped from No. 9 to No. 10 despite the win Saturday over Northeastern State.

The Mules defeated the RiverHawks 52-24 Saturday, putting them at 7-3 on the season with just one game left to play in the regular season.

The Mules have fallen each of the two weeks in the rankings after starting out at No. 6 in the Central Region (MIAA, GAC, GLIAC, GLVC). The top seven teams in the final regional rankings make the NCAA D2 postseason with the No. 1 seed receiving a bye. The NCAA will announce the final rankings live Sunday at 4 p.m. Central Missouri plays their regular season finale Saturday on the road at Lindenwood. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Jennies soccer ranked No. 1 as NCAA postseason play begins MIAA Regular Season and Tournament Champion Jennies Soccer will enter the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament as the top team in the country with the release of the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday afternoon. This marks the fifth consecutive week that Central Missouri has been ranked No. 1, which is a program record.

The Jennies capped off a perfect 18-0 regular season with a solid run in the MIAA Tournament where they also captured the tournament crown. At 21-0 on the year entering the NCAA Tournament, UCM has already matched it's program record for wins in a season (21). The Jens are coming off their eighth straight MIAA Regular Season crown, 10th overall, and their fourth straight MIAA Tournament Title and fifth overall. They enter the NCAA postseason with the nations third best scoring offense at 3.62 goals per game and the nations best defense with a .143 goals-against average and 18 total shutouts.

UCM will be the No. 1 seed for the NCAA-II Central Region Soccer Tournament for the third straight year as announced by the NCAA on Monday evening. As the No. 1 seed the Jennies will get a bye and host one half of the Central Regional on Friday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 12 in Warrensburg. UCM will host the No. 4 and 5 seed in Bemidji State and Augustana, respectively. Those two teams will play Friday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. in Warrensburg with the winner advancing to play the Jennies on Sunday Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Jennies Field at the South Recreation Complex.

Oct. 17 that a student lost a wallet in the Twomey Auditorium between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. The student was unsure if he dropped the wallet in class or if someone took it. At 3 p.m. Nov. 7, the student said the wallet had been returned to him by someone in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. He said $6 was missing from the wallet.

It was reported at 1:03 p.m. Oct. 28 that dispatch requested an officer respond to 6 SE 140 Rd. regarding an agency assist for a loud party. The responding officer contacted multiple people leaving the party that were allegedly intoxicated. The officer also detected the odor of marijuana at the party. The party was dispersed.

One of the individuals contacted was later identified as a student and a member of a fraternity on campus. That individual will be referred for university discipline.

Grant W. Umbach and Morgan M. Flerlage were arrested at 1:54 a.m. Oct. 29 in Lot 46 outside of Unit C at the Fraternity Complex on suspicion of possession of an open container of alcohol in public.

It was reported at 12:25 p.m. Oct. 29 that an officer assisted the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office at 136 SW 13 Highway in reference to a parking complaint. Multiple vehicles were parked on 13 Highway in front of a residence. After contacting the tenants, the officer allegedly discovered that minors were inside the residence consuming alcohol. No arrests were made.

After contacting the owner of the vehicle, it was determined the owner had been involved in an ongoing dispute with another resident who was contacted. The vehicle did not appear to be damaged. The individual will be referred for university discipline.

It was reported at 5:05 p.m. Oct. 31 that dispatch requested an officer respond to the fourth floor of South Yeater in reference to a possible drug law violation. The reporting student allegedly stated that their room smelled like marijuana because their roommate was bringing marijuana into the room and using it in the bathroom.

It was reported at 12:55 p.m. Nov. 1 that sometime between 6 and 11 a.m. Nov. 1, someone stole a black backpack containing aviation materials from the back seat of a blue Acura in UCM Lot 50.

It was reported at 7:55 p.m. Nov. 1 that a student lost her Apple watch at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on Oct. 18. The student said she took the watch off for basketball practice and set it next to her bag or in it. She stated after practice she left and when she arrived home she could not find her watch.

It was reported at 4:33 p.m. Nov. 2 that between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Nov. 1, someone struck a vehicle in UCM Lot 11 and did not exchange insurance information. The vehicle’s front fender was damaged.

It was reported at 12:46 p.m. Oct. 29 that from 1 a.m. Oct. 28 to 1:10 p.m. Oct. 29 someone removed a student’s bike and lock from the bicycle rack in front of South Yeater Hall. At 10:22 a.m. Oct. 30, the bike was recovered at the bicycle rack at the Walton Stadium concession stand and the undamaged bike was returned to the student.

It was reported at 8:27 p.m. Nov. 2 that dispatch was advised of an odor of marijuana on the fourth floor of North Ellis. An officer arrived and contacted three occupants of a room that allegedly smelled strongly of marijuana.

No marijuana was located. The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

It was reported at 8:44 p.m. Oct. 29 that dispatch requested an officer to respond to East Ellis in regard to possible property damage. After an investigation, four male

CAMPUS CRIME CONT. an individual made possible threatening statements in an online post. The responding officer contacted the person by phone and they agreed to meet at UCM Public Safety. The individual stated the statement was never intended to be a threat at all. He was frustrated with his social media news feed. The incident is being referred to the Office of Student Experience and Engagement.

Brooke N. Collins was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Nov. 4 on the 600 block of South Washington Street on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and failing to keep right after an officer allegedly observed her nearly strike a curb and travel into the left lane of the roadway four times.

It was reported at 11:14 p.m. Nov. 4 that eight minors in Bradshaw Hall were allegedly consuming alcohol. After an investigation, the alcohol was destroyed and the incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

It was reported at 12:32 a.m. Nov. 5 that the South crosswalk marker at the intersection of South Holden and East Clark streets was missing. The marker was taken between 7:52 p.m. Nov. 4 and 12:32

a.m. Nov. 5. The missing sign costs $308.

It was reported at 1:19 a.m. Nov. 5 that Johnson County Central Dispatch was advised of an alleged disturbance and a male on the ground bleeding in front of Those Were The Days in Warrensburg. The male was contacted and allegedly had facial trauma from a fight he was in at The District. The JCAD arrived and transported the male to the Western Missouri Medical Center.

It was reported at 7:35 p.m. Nov. 5 that an odor of marijuana was allegedly detected on the fifth floor of South Yeater.

A female student was contacted who allegedly stated she had smoked marijuana.

No marijuana was located. The incident will be forwarded for disciplinary referral.

It was reported at 8 p.m. Nov. 5 that an officer responded to Nattinger/Bradshaw Hall regarding a fire. Two students said a fire started in the kitchen of the main floor while they were cooking. The fire was extinguished prior to the officer’s arrival.

Stephaine R. Washington, 41, was arrested at 12:07 Oct. 26 on suspicion of driving without a valid license.

Edward H. Gorens IV, 18, was arrested at 9:40 p.m. Oct. 23 in the 600 block of West Gay Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Justin L. Todd, 44, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. Oct. 26 at the intersection of Warren and Young streets on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and possession of a synthetic narcotic.

Hector Arriaga, 22, was arrested at 9:01 a.m. Oct. 24 in the 400 block of McGoodwin Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Prescription drugs were reported stolen at 10:14 a.m. Oct. 26 in the 200 block of East Culton Street.

Blessing was arrested at 9:44 p.m. Oct. 24 in the 1000 block of South Maguire Street on suspicion of stealing.

Tyran J. Brooks, 24, was arrested at 3:32 p.m. Oct. 26 on North College Street on suspicion of driving with a suspended license.

Cody James L. Brandt, 28, was arrested at 3:59 a.m. Oct. 25 at the intersection of North Street and College Street on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hali M. Niceswarnder, 22, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. Oct. 26 at the intersection of Highway 50 and Frontage Road on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

Gary T. Walker, Jr., 29, was arrested at 9:36 p.m. Oct. 24 on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

Nathaniel J. Stewart, 18, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. Oct. 25 on suspicion of possession of marijuana.
