#5 Southern Arkansas begins the final weekend of action before opening Great American Conference play next weekend in Ada, Oklahoma. The Lady Muleriders (7-1) travel to Bentonville for the UAM 8-State Classic with four regional games slated against teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. SAU begins play in Northwest Arkansas with an early 9 a.m. first-pitch against Northwest Missouri State (2-2) on Friday, February 17, before matching up with Central Missouri (5-6) at 3 p.m. The Lady Muleriders will play just one game on both Saturday and Sunday beginning with a 1 p.m. first-pitch with Fort Hays State (1-4) on Saturday and a 1 p.m. meeting with Missouri Southern State (2-9) on Sunday. Southern Arkansas is 7-5 in the Classic in three trips since 2013, but is 5-1 the past two seasons. Through eight games, Southern Arkansas is hitting .345 (2nd | GAC), with a team-ERA of 3.64 (6th | GAC) and a fielding percentage of .951 (7th | GAC). Junior First Baseman Jill Roye, reigning league player of the week, is leading the team with a .548 batting average, which is tops in the Great American Conference among players with at least 20 at-bats. Roye’s 17 hits, 23 RBI and 25 total bases are also league-bests through the season’s first

two weeks. Redshirt junior Brooke Goad is leading the conference in on-base percentage at .647 and in runs scored with 16, while senior utility player Maddie Dow (13) and junior outfielder Megan Godoyo (12) are second and third respectively. The latter two are also pacing the GAC in home runs as both players have three dingers apiece through eight games. Dow and senior catcher Tyler Casada each have 13 RBI, which is second behind Roye’s ridiculous 23. Dow is just four total bases behind Roye’s 25, while Goad’s 19 total bases are fifth-most in the league. Junior infielder Marina Duran owns the ninth-highest batting average in the league at .450 and ranks in the GAC’s top-five in on-base percentage (.593 | 3rd), runs scored (8 | T-5th), home runs (2 | T-3rd), and walks (7 | 2nd). Goad leads the league in walks with 11. Freshman infielder Faith Otts’ four doubles are tied for the league lead. In the circle, freshman right-hander Victoria Taylor has pushed her strikeout total to 33, which stands as the second-most in the GAC, while her 5-0 record is the best in the league. Southern Arkansas University 2017 Lady Mulerider Softball Game Notes at UAM 8-State Classic | February 17-19 | Bentonville, Ark.

Preseason Favorites

After their historic postseason run to Denver, Colorado, for the 2016 NCAA DII Women’s College World Series, in which they finished fourth, the 2017 Lady Muleriders have been tabbed preseason favorites in the Great American Conference after posting the second-best record in league play at 33-8, while also capturing the program’s second GAC Tournament Championship. SAU returns 9 lettermen from last year’s club and welcomes in 13 newcomers to this year’s team.

NFCA Number Five

The highest ranking for the Lady Muleriders by National Fastpitch Coaches Association last season was a fourth-place finish in the final Top-25 Coaches Poll. SAU entered the poll in Weeks 5 and 6 last season by receiving votes and cracked the Top-25 for the first time in program history in Week 7 as they entered at No. 23. Over the course of the next few weeks, Southern Arkansas worked their way to No. 20 and then No. 18, before settling as the 15th-ranked team in the nation, in advance of their trip to the College World Series. This year, the Lady Muleriders begin the season ranked number five in the NFCA after posting a 53-11 record a season ago.

Guess Who’s Back.....Back Again

Maddie Dow, Kaylee Garner, and Brooke Goad are all back for Southern Arkansas this season

and the trio was recently recognized by being named Preseason NCAA Division II All-Americans by

Fastpitch News. Dow, a CoSIDA Academic All-American last year and three-time all-region performer, continued to be a fearful force at the plate as she hit .335 with 18 homeruns and 61 RBIs. It was the thirdstraight season in which she hit over .325 with double-digit homeruns and 40 or more RBIs. For her career, Dow is a .343 hitter with 52 homeruns and 163 RBIs. The homerun and RBI totals are already career records at SAU, and she is also at the top of the career homerun list in the GAC. Additionally, her 52 career long balls make her the active career leader in homeruns at the Division II level. Garner, a native of Danbury, Texas, transferred into the program last year from Texas State University and she made an immediate impact by throwing just the third perfect game in program history as she was flawless in 5.0 run-rule shortened innings against Lincoln in her very first start of the season. In those five innings of work, Garner struck out 10 batters to average a pair of punchouts per inning. That performance earned Garner NFCA National Pitcher of the Week honors. As the year progressed, Garner was a dominant fixture in the circle as she went 25-4 with a 2.11 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 175.2 innings of work. Her 25 wins are the second-most in a season at SAU her 183 strikeouts rank fifth-most in a season. Goad, a Top-25 Finalist for the NFCA’s Division II National Player of the Year, earned postseason All-America honors from three different softball media outlets including the NFCA (D2CCA & HERO Sports) last season as she was among one of the most dangerous power hitters in the country. For the year, Goad hit .364, belted 23 homeruns and drove in 56 runs. Her 23 jacks that year were second in all of NCAA DII and set new single-season school and conference records in the process. Goad also set SAU single-season records in Runs Scored (65), Total Bases (149), and Walks (52).

Southern Arkansas University 2017 Lady Mulerider Softball Game Notes at UAM 8-State Classic | February 17-19 | Bentonville, Ark. Jason Anderson

his first three seasons at CBC, Anderson guided the Mustangs to a berth in the National

Head Softball Coach 3rd Season at SAU Arkansas Tech (2001) Jason Anderson enters into his third season

as the head coach of the Southern Arkansas softball program and in his short time at SAU, Anderson has helped the Lady Mulerider softball program reach new heights.

This past year, Anderson guided the Lady Muleriders to their best season in program history as they captured a school-record 53 wins en route to the program’s second Great American Conference Tournament Championship, its first Central Region title, and first appearance in the NCAA Division Women’s College Softball World Series. The 53 victories in 2016 marked the fourth time in Anderson’s nine-year head coaching career that his team has surpassed the 50-win mark, and the first time it has been accomplished in the 18-year history of the Lady Mulerider softball program. During the course of last year, SAU became ranked nationally for the first time in program history in late March, and after seven weeks of being nationally ranked, the club ended the season tabbed fourth in the NFCA DII Top-25 Coaches Poll following a fourth-place finish at the College World Series. It was the sixth time in Anderson’s coaching career that his team finished with a top-5 national ranking at the conclusion of the season. Statistically, Anderson’s 2016 team finished the year ranked in the top-25 nationally in home runs per game (8th | 1.13), slugging percentage (11th | .501), win-loss percentage (13th | .828), on-base percentage (14th | .409), fielding percentage (16th | .971), and earned run average (22nd | 1.96). The offensive-minded coach, Anderson has helped build a team that has re-written numerous offensive records. In his first season, Anderson’s Lady Muleriders established team single-season offensive records in Batting Average, Slugging Percentage, On-Base Percentage, and Walks. This past year, he helped surpass each of those records, while also establishing new team single-season marks in Wins (53), Runs Scored (381), Homeruns (72), Runs Batted In (343), and Total Bases (839). In his first year as the head coach at SAU, Anderson would win 26 games while also leading the Lady Muleriders to their fourth-straight GAC Tournament berth. A proven winner in his career, Anderson, a native of Sheridan, Ark. has amassed an outstanding career coaching record of 386-108 (.781). The first 226 of those career wins came during a five-year stint at Central Baptist College (Conway, Ark.). In those five seasons at CBC, Anderson lost only 38 games against his 226 wins as he complied an eye-popping .856 winning percentage with the Mustangs. In each of

Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament. A five-time NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year, Anderson’s 2010 CBC team would go a remarkable 52-1 (.981) en route to a NCCAA National Championship. Anderson would later be named the NCCAA National Coach of the Year that season. In the two seasons following the 2010 national championship, Anderson’s Mustangs would win 50+ games twice as they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2011 and 2012. In each of those seasons, the Mustangs would end the season nationally-ranked in the top-five. Following the 2012 season, Anderson left CBC and moved to the coaching ranks of NCAA Division II as he became the head coach at the University of North Alabama (Florence, Ala.). In his lone season at UNA, Anderson led North Alabama to one of the best years in school history. That year, the Lions put together a 40-20 record and were ranked as high as No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II polls (NFCA). Anderson’s UNA team in 2013 would set new single-season school records for wins (40), hits (572), RBIs (330), doubles (108), team batting average (.338) and games played (60), while qualifying for only the second NCAA Regional in UNA history. A total of five players were named to the All-Gulf South Conference team at the end of the year, three of which also landed on the All-South Region squad. After that one year at North Alabama, Anderson moved to the coaching ranks in the Great American Conference (GAC) as he was named head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University (Alva, Okla.). While at NWOSU, Anderson would take a team that had not had a winning season since 2008 and turn them into a 41-15 club. Picked to finish ninth in the preseason GAC coaches’ poll, Anderson would have his team end up second in the GAC regular season standings after his Rangers’ club finished in a tie in the loss column, but one game back in the win column to regular season champs, Southeastern Oklahoma. Statistically, Anderson’s 2014 Rangers would set numerous records including the school record for wins (41) and winning percentage (.732). Offensively, his team would set new school single-season marks in batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.535), runs scored (351), hits (516), doubles (92), homeruns (79), RBIs (322), total bases (853), and walks (174). Along with the team records set, Anderson coached four players who would go on to set or tie 12 single-season individual records. In his career, Anderson has coached the National Pitcher of the Year (2011, 2010), the National Player of the Year (2011), National Newcomer of the Year (2016), 16 All-Americans, 35 All-Conference honorees, and 10 All-Region players. Anderson is married to the former Renee Byford and the couple has two children, Addison and Kyler.
