The President’s Message

NOVEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

Brothers, Families, and Supporters,

I am filled with gratitude and pride as I write to thank each of you for placing your trust in my leadership. Being one of the youngest presidents to serve this distinguished chapter, I am humbled by your support and confidence in me. Together, we have achieved monumental milestones that reflect the dedication, unity, and strength of Mu Lambda.

Under our shared vision, we have secured the title of Chapter of the Year, a testament to the collective hard work and unyielding commitment of every Brother. Additionally, our enduring partnership with Beta Chapter has once again been honored with the Charles H. Wesley Award, marking three consecutive years of collaboration and brotherhood. These accomplishments are not the work of one but the result of every Brother’s contributions—their time, their talents, and their unwavering commitment to making our chapter a beacon of leadership and service.

As we celebrate our chapter’s journey into its 101st year of service, I am inspired by the legacy we continue to build on, brick by brick. Our unity and dedication to one another have enabled us to honor the sacrifices and accomplishments of those who came before us. This November, as I represent the 227 registered Brothers of Mu Lambda, I do so with immense pride, knowing that we are all moving Alpha onward and upward toward the light.

It is an incredible honor to receive the recognition of M.A.A.C. Brother of the Year, and I see this as just a small step in my own journey of service and commitment to Alpha Phi Alpha. I hope to continue inspiring each Brother to strive for excellence, to serve selflessly, and to remain devoted to our mission as we work to illuminate our communities and dispel darkness and hate from society.

Thank you once again, Brothers, for believing in this vision and for making it a reality. Together, let us carry forward the spirit of Mu Lambda with renewed vigor, knowing that the best is yet to come.

Fraternally,

Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, (10-Mu Lambda-13) President 2024 - 2025

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Vice President’s Message

NOVEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

Greetings Brothers,

I hope this message finds you well and that you’ve had some time to process the recent election news. Now more than ever, is the time for us to come together and push forward with the work of Alpha.

I am repeating some upbeat beat news: at this year’s MAAC Conference, our beloved chapter received three prestigious awards—Alumni Chapter of the Year, Alumni Brother of the Year, and the esteemed Charles H. Wesley Award with Beta Chapter.

Huge kudos to Brother Jeffrey Taylor for his vision in crafting our presentation over the past three years and to Brother Demarcus McMillan for his dedication in perfecting it for this year’s win. We’re also so proud of our President Brother Mikael LaRoche, for his exemplary work recognized by the district, and of Brother James Harmon for his committed advisement of Beta Chapter.

A special shout-out goes to Brother Jeffrey Taylor for his vision in crafting our Chapter of the Year presentation over the past three years and to Brother Demarcus McMillan for his dedication in finetuning it to secure this year’s win. We are equally proud of our President, Brother Mikael LaRoche, whose outstanding contributions were recognized by the district, and of Brother James Harmon for his exceptional work in advising Beta Chapter.

As you know, this recognition has earned us the honor of representing the District at the Eastern Region Conference this spring, and then to General Convention this summer in Philadelphia (yes, i am speaking it into existence). This is our opportunity to showcase the strength and commitment of our chapter, and I encourage each of you to get actively involved with one of our committees that align with your interests.

I also want to take a moment to thank Brother Joseph Housey and the Brothers Keepers Committee for an outstanding job organizing Risk Management training last Saturday. We had over 30 brothers join to assist eight of our senior brothers. This not only kept our chapter in good standing but also allowed us to bond and uplift one another.

With a busy November and December ahead, I look forward to working alongside each of you and seeing you at our upcoming projects and events. Let’s keep building on this momentum and continue to make an impact.

Thank you, Brothers!

MU LAMBDA NETS 3 MAAC AWARDS

33RD ANNUAL MAAC DISTRICT CONFERENCE

Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter,

I am thrilled to extend the most heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you on Mu Lambda’s triumphant showing at the 33rd Annual Mid-Atlantic Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters (M.A.A.C.) District Conference, held at Salisbury University. This prestigious event highlighted the dedication, impact, and excellence of our chapter, culminating in a historic outcome as Mu Lambda brought home three significant awards. Our chapter was honored with the highly coveted Chapter of the Year, a remarkable recognition that celebrates the collective efforts and exceptional commitment of our Brotherhood. Additionally, our steadfast partnership with Beta Chapter at Howard University earned us the distinguished Charles H. Wesley Award, underscoring our commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and the development of young Brothers within the fraternity. And, in a moment that will be celebrated for years to come, our own Brother

President, Mikael E. LaRoche, received the highly respected Brother of the Year award—a true testament to his exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication to our mission.

This achievement is a milestone in Mu Lambda’s history, as it has been 15 years since we last celebrated such high recognition in these categories at the district level. The competition within M.A.A.C. is rigorous, and to rise to the top demonstrates the power and unity of Mu Lambda’s Brotherhood. This victory is a reflection of each Brother’s hard work, of the energy we have poured into supporting our communities, and of the relentless spirit we bring to transforming lives through service.

Let us give special recognition and gratitude to Brother McMillian, our Programs Chairman, who took over from Brother Jeffrey Taylor to put together a powerful awards package that presented the work of Mu Lambda with both precision and passion. Through his efforts, we have been able to showcase the impact of our programs, our vision, and our purpose to the district and beyond. His commitment, along with the dedication of every Brother involved, allowed our work to stand out among chapters.

Looking forward, we have an exciting journey ahead as we prepare for the 2025 Eastern Regional Convention, scheduled for Easter weekend in Bethesda, Maryland. With the event being hosted within the M.A.A.C. region, we have a remarkable opportunity to represent not only Mu Lambda but also our entire district with the strength and pride befitting Alpha

men. As we set our sights on competing for the top awards on the regional stage, we will be joined by our Brothers in Beta Chapter, who are bringing their own impressive accolades, including their distinction as the chapter with the highest cumulative GPA, winners of the step show, and Miss M.A.A.C. herself, who will be standing alongside us as Miss Black and Gold. Together, we have the potential to make history again and bring honor to our fraternity in ways that will resonate throughout Alpha.

Brothers, this is just the beginning. Let us keep pushing forward with renewed vigor, knowing that our dedication and efforts are creating a legacy that embodies Alpha Phi Alpha’s core values. We are First of All, Servants of All, and

as we continue to transcend barriers, let this achievement remind us of the impact we can have when we work with passion, purpose, and unity.

Here’s to every Brother who has played a role in this success, to the generations that came before us, and to the future we are building for those who will follow. Mu Lambda is rising, and our light will shine as a beacon of service and excellence for all to see.

MU LAMBDA WITH BRO. BARRY RESPECTING THE LEGACY OF DC’S MAYOR FOR LIFE

A well known establishment in Washington D.C. took the legacy and value of our dear brother “Mayor For Life” Marion Barry for granted. With a tasteless twist, the C.E.O and marketing deptartment of the company made a choice to name their latest product, “Marion Berry Knots” - which - was launched with a public campaign that covered their future pastries with confectionate sugar. In the ads, they littered the images with “cocaine baggies” to align their efforts with the unfortunate public runnings Brother Barry had with drug use while in office.

This tactless marketing gimmick was met with a huge uproar from the Washington D.C.

Community, after their C.E.O. doubled down on the product which clearly dispparrages the name and legacy of a beloved member of the nation’s capitol.

From letters to protests, it was clear that this was not going to settle without a clear fight, and I took it upon myself to alert our General Headquarters of the activities.

The “Knot in DC” coalition, shared the public release statement by the CEO of &Pizza on October 31st, with their new committments to righting the wrongs of this failed attempt at marketing, establishing future partnerships with Minority Businesses, company wide Diversity Training, and a promise to make other contributions to community development of HBCUs and other organizations rooted in DC Community through systematic inequality etc.

In the words of Brother Barry, - “ When you know more, you can do more.” - We knew enough about our dear brother to STAND UP for his name and his legacy! Do not play with our GOOD BROTHER or his name!

DISTRICT BROTHER OF THE YEAR

THE

55TH PRESIDENT OF MU LAMBDA

Brother Mikael LaRoche brings home the coveted M.A.A.C. District Brother of the Year award 2024

1745 Active Brothers are a part of the 3 state/district that makes up the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters, and of this number, the M.A.A.C. saw it fit to select one!

One of the youngest serving presidents of the oldest alumni chapter of Alpha, seated in the nation’s capital. Mu Lambda is proud to showcase the value that Brother LaRoche has brought to the 11th Alumni chapter.

A tall, slender figure, Brother LaRoche became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha in the Spring of 2013, after graduating from Howard University with his B.A. in 2011 through Mu Lambda. He had the honor of serving the chapter on multiple executive boards, under many presidents and took the reigns of the chapter in 2023 leading it to the centennial celebration.

A former Athlete and coach, A proud father, A creative thinker, and A new board member of the House of Ruth in Washington D.C., Brother LaRoche continues to forge a path forward for Mu Lambda, and Alpha in Washington D.C. as he builds bridges and relationships with other Divine 9 Organizations and community partners to move Mu Lambda ONWARD & UPWARD.

We are proud of this acknowledgement. We are grateful for Brother LaRoche’s committment to Alpha Phi Alpha, the community and our

chapter. As the awardee, we look forward to supporting Brother LaRoche at the 2025 Eastern Regional Convention & his bid to be recognized at the National level.

Kudos!

MU LAMBDA ELECTION 2024

BROTHERS OF MU LAMBDA ON HOWARD’S CAMPUS ELECTION NIGHT & AROUND THE CITY FOR THE HISTORIC NIGHT

From the First of All, We Vote Reception hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, at Hook Hall on Friday September 13th, 2024 to the Omicron Lambda Alpha Reception at the Park on 14th St., the streets were abuzz with the presence of Alpha Men around the city. We laughed, we danced, we made new friends, but most importantly we worked hard for the agendas and policies that affect the Black Community at the policy level. From the our most local legislators, to our most distant. the brothers of Mu Lambda are proud to continue to advocate for the community, create representation in places were we are not often seen, and break down walls of negativity and stigma. , WE ARE MOVING ONWARD & UPWARD!

MU LAMBDA AT THE POLLS 2024

BROTHERS OF MU LAMBDA ADOPT

VOTING STATION 2024 DC

While proudly part of the “coldest fraternity on earth,” Mu Lambda Chapter has been ablaze with purpose and energy under the dynamic leadership of Brother President Mikael LaRoche, Brother Vice President Joseph Gibbs, and Programs Committee Chair Jeffery Taylor. This trio has driven the chapter’s dedication to community engagement and social justice, blending tradition with a vision that strengthens bonds across our brotherhood. Mu Lambda’s commitment has been evident in pivotal moments that call for civic duty and public service.

A powerful example of this dedication was seen on U.S. Presidential Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024. With Alpha Kappa Alpha Sister Kamala Harris running for Vice President alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz against former President Donald Trump and JD Vance, Mu Lambda partnered with the D.C. Board of Elections to play an active role in our nation’s electoral process. Brothers Arsene Frederick, Jeffery Taylor, and Byron L. Williams, together with seven brothers from Omicron Eta Lambda, the Voting Station Manager, and three community volunteers, assisted over 1,200 voters at the Horace Mann Elementary School polling station near American University in northwest DC. Setting up the station the night before, they worked tirelessly from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Election Day to ensure a smooth and supportive voting experience for the community.

The gratitude of neighborhood residents was clear, as the brothers provided logistical support and created a warm, welcoming atmosphere for voters. Mu Lambda’s Election Day service embodied our values, leaving a lasting impression on those they assisted and setting the chapter apart through its commitment to civic responsibility. This impactful involvement underscores Mu Lambda’s dedication to service under the spirited leadership of Brothers LaRoche, Gibbs, and Taylor.

Our fraternity’s commitment to voting rights is deeply rooted in history, since the 1930s at least, when the fraternity designated “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” as one of our national programs. We can also connect our effort to the legacy of civil rights activist Amelia Boynton of Selma, Alabama, whose early voter registration drives inspired generations i. Her courageous actions caught the attention of our own Brother Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and became a driver for the Selma Bus Boycott. Today, Mu Lambda’s efforts echo this legacy, embodying the spirit of those who fought tirelessly for our voices to be heard and action to be taken.

7 TIPS TO STAY WARM THIS WINTER

1. Program the Thermostat:

Set your thermostat to lower temperatures while you’re sleeping or away from home. This simple change can lead to big savings and keeps your house cozy just when you need it.

2. Open & Close Window Treatments Strategically:

Let the sun warm your home during the day by keeping blinds and curtains open. Close them at night to keep that warmth inside – an easy way to stay toasty without touching the thermostat.

3. Add Insulating Shades:

For drafty windows, installing insulating shades provides an extra layer against the cold. Even a little bit of insulation goes a long way in keeping the warmth in.

4. Light a Fire:

If you have a fireplace, use it! It’s an efficient way to heat up the room and adds a lovely, cozy vibe – perfect for cool nights at home.

5. Seal Any Drafts:

Check windows and doors for gaps where warm air might escape. Weatherproofing your home is easy with supplies from your local hardware store and will help you keep the cold out and the warmth in.

6. Reverse Ceiling Fans:

Switch your ceiling fans to run clockwise in the winter. This pushes warm air down, distributing heat more evenly and letting you set the thermostat a bit lower.

7. Cover Bare Floors:

Add area rugs to hardwood or tile floors to help insulate your home from the ground up. A cozy rug not only keeps your feet warm but also helps maintain the room’s warmth.

Stay cozy, save on energy, and enjoy every moment this season brings!

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.

The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.

The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?

As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.

Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
