A connected disconnect

Last month, I touched on smart living, where everything is connected so we’re better informed and in control. This month, I’d like to ponder the side effect of being so connected as it seemed a ïtting topic as we went about producing our annual Apps feature. In the past, we’ve focused on and wrote in length about the conveniences of an app-enabled world, especially the dawn of concierge and service apps that do everything from transport to grocery shopping. However, like the stereotypical spoiled rich brats in a Hollywood movie, we are in danger of losing out on practical life skills because we no longer practice them. How many years will it take before the term ‘there’s an app for it’ becomes an everyday excuse for the lack of real world knowledge? But, if we’re following the usual Hollywood script, the spoiled rich kid eventually earns his comeuppance, learns some hard truths and turns a new leaf. So in technology, there is also hope. The world has suddenly found itself enthralled with Pokémon Go, which has amazingly gotten people out to walk, jog, hike, bike and explore places they’d never have gone otherwise. It has broken down social barriers—I’ve never had so many strangers start genuinely animated conversations with me. People seem more charitable, as players often help others by sharing location information, short cut routes and even catching Pokémon for those visibly struggling. Even families, young and old, are spending more time together. Now, Pokémon Go has its fair share of problems with reckless behavior, trespassing and crowds generally being a nuisance, but I’ve never seen any one app getting so many people out, about and working together. And that’s a start. Apps, there may be a better future after all. 8?AF?SY!F?O #BGUPS

We’ll admit, it’s not easy to keep track of all these standards: from USB 2.0 to 3.0 to 3.1. For most of us, it’s just a USB plug. But the key difference lies in how much time you spend waiting for things to get done, versus actually getting things done and going on with your life. USB 3.0 gained a signiƂcant speed boost from USB 2.0, but while it sounds like a minor update, USB 3.1 actually FQWDNGU the maximum transfer rate from USB 3.0, so your Ƃles transfer so much faster. If you’re looking to get a portable storage device today, you should deƂnitely hunt for a USB 3.1 device to save time and get your money’s worth.

A solid-state drive (SSD) is nextgeneration storage technology that has more advantages over the older, more common HDD (hard disk drives). HDDs drives spin platters at anywhere from 5,400 to 7,200 revolutions per minute, and use a magnetic head on a moving arm to read and write data to the platter surface. When you think about how delicate that process is, you understand why most of us have experienced a hard drive failure at some point. In contrast, SSDs store data on Ćƒash memory chips, with no moving mechanical parts. This makes them more resistant to physical shock, quieter to run, are much quicker, able to transfer Ć‚les faster, and also smaller.

A portable SSD that transfers faster, lasts longer, and stores safer

If you’re just keeping random GIFs on your portable storage, then maybe you don’t need to encrypt it. But if you’re keeping personal data, like photos of your family, or professional data, like Ƃnancial spreadsheets, then yes, you should encrypt your portable device. Encrypting a portable storage device locks your data behind a password, so only people with the password can access the data inside. A password doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective, a six-digit passcode already contains one million possible combinations; a six character alphanumeric passcode has more. You wouldn’t use your smartphone completely unlocked without a PIN. Why wouldn’t you do the same with your portable storage device?

If you’re looking for your next portable storage device, the new Samsung Portable SSD T3 checks all the right boxes. It comes with a USB 3.1 Type-C connector, uses SSD storage rather than HDD, and has optional AES 256-bit hardware encryption that doesn’t affect performance. Driven by Samsung’s TurboWrite technology, the T3 can read or write Ƃles at up to 450MB/s, which is up to 4x faster than traditional external hard drives1. The T3 weighs just 51g2 and is roughly the size of a business card. Samsung V-NAND technology gives it up to a large 2TB3 of storage, which is more storage than what some laptops ship with.

Actual thickness

1 Based on internal tests using a Samsungb500GB external HDD, actual performance may vary depending on individual system environment. 2 Exact weight of product may vary by capacity. 3 Actual user-accessible internal storage is less than speciČ´ed total memory due to system Č´les and maintenance use, and may vary depending on drive format, partitioning and computer system.

01. MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE Affordable performance sounds like an impossible combination, but that’s what you get in the BLADE V7 MAX. It has a 7.2mm slim metal body that’s made from high-grade aluminum alloy, and the large 5.5” Full-HD curved glass display provides rich details with colorful contrasts. The BLADE V7 MAX’s imaging prowess lies in its 16MP rear camera, which uses phase-detection for autofocus, the same technology used in DSLR cameras for professional performance. The multi-function Ƃngerprint reader lies by the side of the smartphone, where your thumb naturally rests. Besides using it to secure your BLADE V7 MAX, you can swipe up and down on the reader to navigate. You can also use the reader to encrypt your photos, documents, messages and contacts, keeping your data safe from prying eyes. 3GB of RAM and a 64-bit octa-core processor give the BLADE V7 MAX plenty of power for everyday performance, and a Type-C USB port gives you quick data transfer across devices. ZTE BLADE V7 MAX $399

02. LUXURIOUS METAL The BLADE V7 LITE’s minimalist design unmasks its maker’s attention to detail and texture. The almost bezel-free 5” screen with 2.5D-curved glass provides a clear display that is both pleasant to hold and behold. A metallic ring around both the lens of the camera and the Ƃngerprint reader add visual accents to the BLADE V7 LITE’s 7.9mm thin body, and the frame is unmistakably metal, with a reassuring heft and Ƃnish. The Ƃngerprint reader is cleverly placed on the back, below the rear camera, within intuitive reach of your Ƃngers. It functions as a smart, multi-function controller; you can do things like tap to take a selƂe when launching the camera, swipe up or down to switch between music tracks, and double-tap to turn on the ƃashlight. The BLADE V7 LITE gives anyone a chance to own a luxurious metal phone with a smart Ƃngerprint sensor. Anyone. Anywhere can own a metallic body. ZTE BLADE V7 LITE $229

Ferrari’s finest goes topless. Say hi to the Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta. @Y-  ;

3Ζ&785(LAFERRARI

+:0_6(37(0%(5

The Ferrari LaFerrari is a bit of a unicorn in today’s automotive landscape. To be sure, it’s brutally fast and super exclusive, but one of its biggest draw is that it has a naturally aspirated V12 engine. Big multicylinder naturally aspirated engines are expected to be a thing of the past, so it is only ȴtting that Ferrari let nothing get in the way of them putting their signature engine into their ȵagship car. To allow their customers to enjoy that V12 soundtrack even better, Ferrari has just conȴrmed that they will be making an open-top version of the LaFerrari. Though the name has yet to be conȴrmed, it will likely be dubbed the LaFerrari Aperta (Aperta is Italian for open). And since the LaFerrari has a super strong and sti΍ carbon monocoque body, removing the roof is unlikely to have any detrimental e΍ects on the handling or performance.

No technical details have been revealed, but performance is widely expected to remain the same with motive force coming from a combination of a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V12 engine and a KERS unit derived with know-how from Ferrari’s involvement in Formula 1 racing. Total power output should remain unchanged from the LaFerrari’s 950hp and 900nm of torque, while other benchmarks are also expected to remain similar. Expect 0-100km/h to happen in under 3 seconds and a top speed in excess of 340km/h. Sounds good and want one? Brace yourself for some bad news, because even though each car will likely cost over US$1 million, Ferrari has said that all units that it plans to produce have already been accounted for by customers. Act faster next time. Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

S H O W C A S E If you’re someone that needs your coÎ?ee Č´x in order to wake up, there are many ways to go about it. Not too fussy where your coÎ?ee comes from? Then a sachet of instant 3-in-1 premix will do the job just Č´ne, but if you happen to enjoy the Č´ner things in life, there’s no denying the convenience of a Nespresso machine for taking the guesswork out of brewing a gourmet cup of espresso. But, just how do you improve a one-button coÎ?ee machine? Make a one-button, connected coÎ?ee machine! The Nespresso Prodigio is Bluetooth enabled and can be controlled via smartphone and the Nespresso app. You can remotely schedule brews, keep track of your capsule stock, and when they run low, directly order more from the app itself. There was anger. There was also hate, the pungent whiff of racism, and a light sprinkling of misogynistic vitriol. And then the ban hammer came down. In July, Twitter banned Milo Yiannopoulos, a technology editor at conservative news site Breitbart and the selfstyled “most fabulous supervillain on the internet.â€? His crime? Allegedly directing a torrent of hate and insults toward Ghostbusters co-star Leslie Jones, courtesy of his rabid followers and other like-minded folks on Twitte . Unsurprisingly, Yiannopoulo trumpeted the ban as a victory for him, saying that this was “the beginning of the end for Twitter,â€? supposedly because of the implications the ban had for free speech. He framed it as an attack on conservatives and free speech itself, arguing that Twitter had “conĂŻrmed itself as a safe space for Muslim terrorists and Black Lives Matter extremists, but a no-go zone for conservatives.â€? Further deriding Twitter as a “liberal echo chamber,â€? Yiannopoulos effectively set himself up as a victim who was unfairly censured for his conservative views. That’s where things start to get sticky. While any half-rational human being knows that being a conservative doesn’t necessarily mean holding racist or sexist views and being a generally unpleasant person, Yiannopoulos’ statements still raise the question of whether or not the principles of free speech actually include such hate-infused tweets. 6

This is compounded by Twitter’s reputation as an open platform for all voices, especially those at the fringes. The social media service was credited with playing a pivotal

“His crime? Allegedly directing a torrent of hate and insults toward Ghostbusters costar Leslie Jones, courtesy of his rabid followers and other likeminded folks on Twitter.

role in the Arab Spring uprisings, in addition to numerous other social justice movements in the US. The singular thread connecting these disparate movements was that Twitter allows all voices to be heard because of its open and public nature. Yiannopoulos’ ban calls this into question. When you’re an open platform, there are going to be some voices that exploit this and use it to propagate all manner of unsavory views. ISIS terrorists are even known to use Twitter effectively, so Twitter clearly needs some form of policing or moderation. But Yiannopoulos isn’t a terrorist, and should he really be held responsible for the actions of the Twitter mob? The answer is “yes.â€? While Twitter takes pride in hosting diverse views and beliefs, there is scant justiĂŻcation to allow what is essentially cyberbullying. Furthermore, US constitutional rights that protect free speech don’t actually apply to Twitter, because it isn’t run by the government. The US government cannot prevent hate speech, but Twitter can. And it is absolutely possible to silence voices that make digital spaces more hostile, while still preserving healthy debate and a plurality of opinions. Freedom of expression can, and should, be conducted in ways that don’t involve calling a black woman a gorilla. The ideal itself is laudable, but that’s all it is – an ideal that must be tempered by the realities on the ground.

or give you more game credits to continue playing. But the most annoying thing about gaming these days is how you sometimes don’t even get to unlock items anymore. Many games these days incorporate some kind of a random loot feature where gamers are rewarded with random items as they play. That sounds ïne, after all, many games, like Diablo, have had randomized loot for the longest time. But my gripe with these games is when they entice gamers to pay to get more randomized loot. In many of these games, paying only gets you more in-game credits which can then be exchanged for more bags of randomized loot, not the item you are eyeing itself. This makes unlocking items incredibly tedious, frustratingly, and not to mention expensive. All of which only takes the fun out of games. Doesn’t anyone else remember how games were supposed to be about playing, not paying?

ILLUSTRATION .(1.2+

In my mind, one of the biggest problems with games today is not that they are unoriginal, boring, or repetitive; but rather they require gamers to pay and pay. When the idea of downloadable content or DLCs was mooted, it was supposed to provide a way for game developers to release new content for games easily and at a low cost. However, there’s an uncomfortable sense today that DLCs are being used as an opportunity to wring more cash out of gamers. And the worst kinds of DLCs are those that could potentially break the game by giving paying players an unfair advantage, such as a powerful gun or a fast car. DLCs aside, another way game developers are milking gamers of their cash is through freemium games. These games are free to play, but are designed in a way that entice gamers to pay for in-game purchases. These purchases typically alleviate inconveniences within the game, such as remove waiting times,

THE NOT-SO-BAD: OVERWATCH In Overwatch, gamers can earn Loot Boxes as they play. Each Loot Box will yield four random character customization items such as skins, emotes, and animations. Players can speed things up by purchasing Loot Boxes for real money. On the bright side, the items from Loot Boxes are completely cosmetic and have no e΍ect on aactual gameplay.

THE BAD: THE CALL OF DUTY FRANCHISE For the past couple of Call of Duty games, the developers have introduced map packs that added new maps for multiplayer game play. This led to a fragmented online community, where players can’t play with each other unless they have the required map pack. In addition, these map packs sometimes included new, powerful weapons. As a result, buying map packs would give gamers an unfair advantage.

PICTURES OVERWATCH, CALL OF DUTY, TSUM TSUM, DYSON

THE TERRIBLE: DISNEY TSUM TSUM Tsum Tsum is a puzzle game where gamers compete against friends on the LINE messaging service to see who gets the highest score, and can collect the most characters known as Tsums. To collect more Tsums, one needs to play games and earn coins to buy boxes which contain random Tsums. Games cost tokens to play, and you are only given a limited number of tokens, which regenerate at a glacial pace. Gamers can speed this process by buying rubies, which can then be exchanged for tokens, to play more games, or coins to purchase boxes of random Tsums.

How did the idea for the Supersonic hairdryer come about? Since the 1960s, manufacturers have been satisïed to give us the same old technology, just wrapped up differently. As a result, we are left with problems like imbalanced design, unbearable noise, and heat damage due to unregulated heating. It was high time to reinvent the hair dryer, and to come up with a solution to rid us all of the problems. What was James Dyson’s ïrst reaction to hearing you guys were working on a hairdryer? James has been there right from the beginning – you could say he is one of the key minds behind the Dyson Supersonic. As with new projects and new ideas, we all got very excited. How in the world did you get four years and almost 50 million pounds to R&D a hairdryer? At Dyson we don’t believe in releasing a new piece of technology until we genuinely think that it is ready. That is the wonderful thing about working at Dyson. It’s also the reason why we’re still a privately-owned company. This means that we are afforded the freedom to invest heavily in RDD (research design and development) – up to £3 million a week to be precise!

5?UAF @Y- 9! For those of us who grew up watching E.T., 6WUDQJHU7KLQJV hits home with a big dose of nostalgia. A kid vanishes in the Č´rst episode, and the eight-episode Č´rst season is permeated by a sense of mystery made all the more tantalizing by the whiÎ? of danger. All this is set in the 1980s, with kids who cycle everywhere, charmingly clunky telephones, walkie talkies, and outdated hairdos. A mix of imagination and terror (there’s a very hungry monster involved) makes the show compelling. But ultimately, it’s one universal sentiment; friendship, both old and new, which drives the story forward, as the boys race to Č´nd their friend before it’s too late. 6WUDQJHU7KLQJV has all the ingredients to appeal to science Č´ction and fantasy fans of all ages, and it’s backed by some of strongest acting from a young cast that we’ve seen to date. Catch it on NetČľix now.

How did you become a printmaker? I joined the Master Photographers Association (MPA) from the U.K. That’s when I noticed that print is especially important, because to enter the MPA you need to go through a print exam. If a photographer doesn’t know how to print his picture properly, he doesn’t pass. It was around 2007-08 that a senior photographer suggested I focus on printing. I decided then that I would dedicate 10 years to learn everything I could about printing. What separates a good print from a bad one? There are two foundations: the ïrst is color management. You need to know how to properly calibrate your monitor. In the entire workðow from camera to print, the printer is actually the most accurate device. The most inaccurate device is the monitor. With an inaccurate monitor, you don’t know what you’re doing. The other is to know how to edit your picture. A lot of times you can’t always see exactly what you’re doing on the monitor. The moment you print your picture you’ll be able to see all your mistakes. A monitor has, at most, 8.3 megapixels, your camera has way more. You won’t be able to see your mistakes on the screen, you’ll need to print it out. What are some common mistakes people make when printing their photographs? Mistakes people make when printing are small. But when you print your picture, you’ll notice the mistakes you made when editing, the mistakes you made during shooting, the mistakes in your concept. There are four steps to a photograph: The ïrst is conceptualization, the second is the handling of equipment, the third is editing, the fourth part is the print. The print is the trial by ïre, because if the print doesn’t turn out well, then it means your picture isn’t good. So you should print your work, even if most of your photos are going online? Yes. Print is the ïnal destination. Once you hit the last part of stage four, you’ll see where your picture doesn’t work. Then you cycle back to the ïrst step; you see the mistakes you made, and you learn not to make them again, so it becomes a circle. How would you recommend someone start learning how to print their photographs? Get an easy-to-use printer, because there are some printers that aren’t. Canon printers are especially easy to use. Get a monitor calibrator, learn how to use it, start printing on A4. Just start.

Q & A

Ŋ1oll;u1; l-7;;-v‹ Anurag Avula, CEO and founder, Shopmatic @YKoh Wanzi

How does Shopmatic see itself in relation to existing e-commerce platforms like Carousell and Shopee? We provide the entire ecosystem – this includes the website itself and other marketing channels, as well as shipping and the setting up of Facebook stores – for anyone who wants to start an online storefront. There is easy integration with both local and international payment gateways like PayPal, so customers will have access to everything they need to hit the ground running. This means that our target audience is comprised mainly of small and medium enterprises and even home-based entrepreneurs who want to go digital. In comparison, platforms like Carousell and Shopee are primarily mobile marketplaces and ïnd more common use among individuals looking to sell things like second-hand items. Can you elaborate more on how Shopmatic can help home entrepreneurs advance their businesses? The idea is for it to be as simple for people to use as possible, so our customers will not require specialized knowledge of HTML or any other technicalities. We also aim to offer a good amount of customization options so users can tweak their individual sites to their liking.

A payments and banking industry veteran, Anurag now heads Shopmatic’s eĀorts to help entrepreneurs set up their digital shopfront.

What does the larger digital trend mean for regular brickand-mortar stores? Buying trends are shifting online, so it’s become increasingly important for businesses to grow their presence in the online space. Slowly but surely, everyone is getting onto the digital bandwagon. But as customers move online, brands will feel the effects of this shift as well. At the end of the day, bigger ïrms are probably more resilient to these changes and may feel less of an impetus to move online, but smaller brands may have no other choice than to go with the ðow.

What is it about Asia that has allowed various e-commerce platforms to ðourish in the region? In regions like the US, the market is already very saturated. However, the percentage of e-commerce sales in Asia – even in a developed market like Singapore – is still relatively small when compared to ofðine sales, so there’s plenty of room for growth. Furthermore, SMEs make up 99 percent of all enterprises in Singapore, so there is truly a large untapped base of individual entrepreneurs.

Cakewalk (iOS, Free with IAP) Step-tracking apps are a dime a dozen. Step-tracking apps that shame you if you’re lazy? Not so many. Cakewalk determines your daily goal by calculating your daily average step count over the past week; walk less than 50% of this daily goal and Cakewalk will force you into a challenge. The worse part? Fail this challenge and you’ll be publicly shamed on Twitter. As the developer accurately puts it, it’s as if your roommate was a ȴtness app.

Burn your fat with me!! (iOS/Android, $1.48/$2.60 with IAP) Do you like anime? If so, this “ȴtness app/dating sim that provides players with the motivation to work out through moé”—is for you. For those outside of this circle, “moé” is that heart-melting feeling a guy gets when he sees an adorable female anime character. So instead of solving puzzles, you advance the game by clearing ȴtness goals, like doing 50 situps in 3 minutes. A gal-oriented version of this app (with male voice actors!) is also available.

Runtastic Butt Trainer (iOS/ Android, Free with IAP) You may have heard of Runtastic’s GPS app for running or its Six Pack app for abs training - but have you heard of the company’s Butt Trainer app? Filled with intense butt and leg workouts, including over 50 HD instructional butt exercise videos if you pony up for the full version, this is the app to get in your quest for a sexier pair of legs and a more lifted behind. Because sculpted abs should never be ruined by an undeȴned rear.

Zombies, Run! (iOS/ Android, Free with IAP) If the risk of heart diseases can’t motivate you to exercise, maybe the prospect of being eaten by zombies can. Zombies, Run! is a zombie survival “game” that aims to get you to run for real. While you can take a slow jog, you better pick up the pace when you hear zombies on your six. And please don’t run like a headless chicken; you need to pick up vital supplies, build your base, and help keep other people alive while at it.

Noisli (iOS/Android, $2.98) It’s 3pm, and you’re stuck in that mid-day rut between lunch and the end of the day. Fortunately, there’s Noisli to help you get in the zone. It plays ambient sounds, or white noise, to help drown out distracting background noises and allow you to focus better. There are sounds emulating rain, a thunderstorm, a forest with birds, and even a ȵowing stream, and you can also mix di΍erent sounds to create the one that suits you best.

Loop (Android, Free) Loop helps you keep track of the frenzy that is modern day living. If you’re looking to cultivate good habits and stay productive, Loop will track your progress over time so you know how you’re doing. This is presented in a clean and visual interface, and your success at establishing a particular habit or routine is expressed as a percentage, courtesy of a built-in formula. It’ll even work with Android Wear smartwatches, and individual reminders can be set for each habit to keep you going.

Habitica (iOS/ Android, Free)

Paper by Fiftythree (iOS, Free)

Being a responsible adult isn’t a whole lot of fun, but there are creative ways to stay motivated. Habitica turns your entire life into a game, letting you create a custom avatar and make lists of your habits, goals, and to-do items. Check o΍ enough tasks and your avatar levels up, allowing you to unlock features like armor, skills, pets, and even quests. There’s a social element to it as well, and you can battle monsters with friends and use the gold you earn to purchase in-app rewards.

Inspiration doesn’t always come in words, and Paper can help you capture those ȵashes of brilliance (or possibly inanity). Either way, this is an app that supports all forms of note taking, from sketches and diagrams to lists and good ol’ notes. It also supports the Apple Pencil, so you can see just how bad at drawing you are if you’re using it on the iPad Pro. All this is backed by a clean, minimalistic interface that lets you search and browse your work via a navigation sidebar.

Snapseed (iOS/ Android, Free)

PicsArt Photo Studio (iOS/Android, Free)

Snapseed is a must-have because it works like a dream. It’s powerful, yet it comes with none of the complexity found on professional photo-editing desktop programs. Besides core controls like exposure, shadows, highlights, and saturation, there’s literally an option called “Drama” that really brings out your latest indie café discovery. You can manipulate the details by selecting each aspect at a ȵick, while adjusting its intensity with a left or right slide. The best part about Snapseed is it’s now indeȴnitely free-of-charge.

When PicsArt said they were all-in-one, they meant it. This app is great if you want to add and modify stu΍ beyond technicalities like sharpness and color. You can create photo collages, GIFs, and videos for a little storytelling on your Instagram proȴle. If you want to bring out your inner artist, PicsArt also provides a comprehensive drawing suite, too. With 250 million downloads for this app, we’d be surprised if you didn’t have this in your arsenal yet.

Photo Editor by Aviary (iOS/Android, Free) Aviary is a good app by itself, but it is great for creating sidesplitting memes with your own shots. Edit the photos with a professional touch, or simply use the text add-on and drawing tools to create your next viral masterpiece. Out of all the apps here, Aviary is the only one that dares to say it o΍ers a quick and easy experience. You can even beautify your friend before turning them into a laughing stock within the same app, since it o΍ers cosmetic editing tools as well.

Pixlr (Android, Free) While this is an all-in-one, Android only photo-editing app, Pixlr by Autodesk is actually the perfect selȴe BFF. It has over two million possible combinations for e΍ects, on top of blemish remover, red-eye reduction, and teeth-whitening. If you want your selȴe to look even better than the next one on your feed, use the focal blur to add that professional bokeh e΍ect. It comes with a “frequently used settings” menu, which really cuts down editing time. Of course, it’s as professional as the other editing apps listed here.

THE BEST AFFORDABLE FLAGSHIP SMARTPHONE IS

ONEPLUS 3

OnePlus has improved year after year, and the OnePlus 3 is its ȴnest smartphone to date. While previous OnePlus phones had to include some compromises to keep the price low, the OnePlus 3 is ȵagship-quality through and through, with a premium metal and glass design, powerful top-ofthe-line processor, high-end AMOLED display and quality front and rear cameras. OnePlus has also done away with the troublesome invite system, so you won’t have any diɝculty buying one. ZTE’s Axon 7 gives the OnePlus 3 a run for its money, and on paper, its QHD display and expandable storage certainly make it look like a more appealing choice, but some niggling usability issues, such as cramped non-backlit soft keys, and a sometimes unresponsive ȴngerprint scanner held it back.

The Galaxy Note7 is the ȴrst Samsung phone with perfect symmetry. On the back, the Note7 has the same 12-megapixel, f/1.7, 1/2.6-inch dual-pixel sensor camera with phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilization as the S7 and S7 Edge. The Note7 is IP68 dust and water resistant. That means it can withstand being submerged in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung has done a great job sealing the phone internally, so there’s no Č´ddly Čľaps or ports to deal with. You don’t even have to worry about water getting into the S Pen stylus silo. The Note7 has a Super AMOLED 2,560 x 1,440 pixel display (518ppi), with always on functionality that will display the time, battery charge level and any unread notiČ´cations. The screen is super bright with deep blacks and vivid but not overly saturated colors. The integrated S Pen is what makes the Note7 a productivity beast. If you’re new to the Note series, the S Pen is a stylus that Č´ts snugly into the bottom of the phone, popping out when you want to jot down a note. Samsung has completely overhauled the S Pen for the Note7 and redesigned it to be more responsive and easier to use. The tip of the Note7’s S Pen has a radius of only 0.7mm (down from 1.6m on the Note 5’s S Pen), and the thinner tip makes the S Pen feel more like a ballpoint pen. It is more accurate too, and can now recognize 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, twice that of the Note 5. These two improvements result in a more Čľuid writing experience; it really does feel like writing with a pen on paper. The S Pen itself is more useful than

light since it exposes the pattern of the iris much more clearly, thus making it easier for a camera to capture it. As an added bonus, it also lets the iris scanner work in the dark! It also means that glasses and contact lenses won’t aÎ?ect the beam. Once the image has been recorded, software translates the iris’ pattern into code. This code is then compared against a record in search of a match. Setting up the iris scanner is

incredibly easy and is actually faster than setting up your Č´ngerprints, but you’ll have to remove your glasses to do so. Once you’ve got your eyes scanned, you can unlock your phone without taking your glasses oÎ?. The Note7 is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8890 octa-core processor (combining 4 x 2.3GHz Mongoose & 4 x 1.6GHz Cortex-A53) with a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU and 4GB RAM. This is exactly the same hardware you’ll Č´nd

inside the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. As expected, the Note7 breezed through our benchmark tests, scoring at or near the top in every single one. As for battery life, while the Note7 is slightly larger than the S7 Edge, it actually has a slightly smaller 3,500mAh battery. Having said that, even with a 0.2-inch larger display, it still ran for 13 hours and 42 minutes in our video looping benchmark – just 48 minutes shorter than the S7 Edge.

Because of this though, you may mistakenly think that the WSD-F10 isn’t as rugged as a G-Shock. You’d be wrong. MU-MIMO is the latest buzz phrase in the world of networking. It stands for Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output and it’s a technology that aims to improve the eÉ?ciency of how wireless networks work. For the sake of brevity, it’s important to note that traditional wireless routers can only transmit data to one device at a time. This is why wireless performance degrades rapidly as more and more devices are added to the network. MU-MIMO solves this problem by simply allowing the router to transmit data to multiple devices simultaneously. This improves network performance by reducing the time taken for the router to cycle between devices and also enables the router to better make use of its available bandwidth. One important to note is that MU-MIMO only works with compatible clients, so be sure to check if your client devices support MU-MIMO.

The TP-Link Talon AD7200 is notable because it is the Č´rst consumer router in the world to support the new 802.11ad wireless standard, which is also known as WiGig. 802.11ad makes use of the stratospheric 60GHz frequency range, allowing the Talon AD7200 router to

The Talon AD7200 also supports speeds of up to 1,733Mbps on it 5GHz band and up to 800Mbps on its 2.4GHz band. Add this to the 4,600Mbps on its 60GHz band and you get 7,133Mbps - hence the name Talon AD7200. In the real world, we found the Talon AD7200’s performance to be less quick, but still very impressive. Using the highspeed 60GHz network, we recorded speeds of close to 800Mbps, which was almost on a par with what you’d expect from wired Ethernet connections. When you put your foot down, it is apparent that the new Carrera S is a markedly faster beast. There is some hesitancy from the get-go, but once the revs climb and your vision starts to blur, you will start to appreciate the twin turbos that are nestled in the engine behind you. Acceleration is almost brutal and 0-100km/h happens in just 4.1 seconds - 3.9 seconds if you turn the mode selector switch into the super racy Sports Plus mode. Inevitably, there’s some loss in aural excitement. The characteristic Čľat-six howl is still there, but it’s harder to hear it over the whine of the turbos. Fortunately, the optional Sports Exhaust package helps alleviate matters. Activating it, livens up the exhaust and gives you crackles and pops when you liftoÎ? during heavy acceleration. The 911 is still a great drive, whether on the road or on track. And with the optional Sport Chrono Package, owners will be able to choose from Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Custom driving modes to suit their mood and preference. Normal is most suited for daily driving and sets the car up in its softest setting. Here, the ride is Č´rm, but still fairly comfortable. In Sport mode, the attitude of the car changes entirely. The car now wants to hold on to lower gears longer, ride is Č´rmer, and throttle response is noticeably sharper. Sport Plus puts the car in its raciest setting, and is, in my opinion, best reserved for use on the track. On top of being a fun to drive sports car, the new Carrera S is also a heaven for gadget lovers like readers of this magazine. The Porsche Communication Management system has been thoroughly updated. The interface is controlled by a 7-inch multi-touch touchscreen, and it features great graphics and runs speedily. Nestled under the armrest is also a compartment with a USB port. Owners can play music directly from a USB Čľash drive, or even from their phones. Apple users will also be happy to know that the latest Porsches now support Apple

So far, we’ve established that the new 911 Carrera S provides driving thrills, and lots of entertainment and connectivity, but it’s also a fairly practical car - relatively speaking, of course. One of the 911’s party tricks has always been its modest boot. Because the engine is mounted in the rear, there’s space for a fairly sizable boot up front. The new 911 is no diÎ?erent and according to Porsche, the boot will easily accommodate two carry-on pieces of luggage, making the 911 suitable for short getaways. And since it has a 2+2 seating

conȴguration, the small seats behind can also be used to stow your belongings like small bags, groceries, shopping loot, and more. It’s also large enough to accommodate children on short trips. All in all, there’s little to complain about the new 911. Purists preferring the old naturally aspirated engines will look on with scornful eyes, but Porsche has always been about progress, and there’s no lack of evidence to suggest that the latest 911 is a faster and more complete everyday sports car.

How can you À nd your lost Android device? 5F?UGDYPVUPMBYPVGUAPVMBJVTU@C

We’ve all been there at some point or another. There’s no forgetting all the time wasted on overturning sofa cushions or rooting around in odd places for your phone – only to ïnd that it was really on your bedside table all along. But what if that happens to you out in the urban jungle? Fortunately, Google has made it easy to track down your phone, all without requiring you to download a dedicated tracking app like Cerberus. iOS owners already have Find My iPhone, so this is for you Android users out there.

?%PPEMCTC?SAF?W?Y

PRE-REQUISITES

Ensure that Location is on and the mode is set to High accuracy. This option can be found in the Google Settings app under Location > Mode > High accuracy.

Your phone must be linked to Google. This means updating the Google app on your phone, turning on Google Now cards and notiïcations, and signing into your browser.

Enable the options that allow your device to be located, locked, and erased remotely. These are found in the Google Settings app as well, under Security.

Make sure your device isn’t hidden on Google Play. Unhide a device by going to play.google.com/ settings and selecting it in the Visibility column.

1. ASKING GOOGLE FOR HELP There isn’t actually a ïxed activation phrase that you have to use. Conversational prompts like “I lost my phone” or “where is my phone” will work just ïne, and Google will ask you to sign in to verify ownership, before attempting to locate your device. If all goes well, you should see your phone’s location below the search bar, along with options to ring or attempt to recover the phone. In our tests, this was accurate to around 20 meters, which isn’t too shabby.

+:0_6(37(0%(5

2. LOCATING YOUR PHONE IN THE REAL WORLD If you’re lucky and the phone is in the immediate vicinity, you can choose to ring it, and hopefully that’ll be the end of it. With that said, it’s worth noting that when you do locate your phone, a notiïcation will appear in the notiïcation pull-down window that the phone has been located by Android Device Manager. If your phone was in fact stolen, this might alert the thief that you’re onto him and lead him to take the phone ofðine, stymying further recovery efforts.

3. RECOVERING (OR SECURING) YOUR PHONE Clicking the “recover” button lets you lock your phone or write a note to whoever happens to be holding onto your phone at the moment. In addition, you can include a contact number in order to better facilitate the recovery. You can also sign out of your Google account on the phone to prevent access to it. You’ll still be able to ring, locate, lock, or wipe the phone after doing this.

4. WIPING THE PHONE If your phone turns out to be stolen, the above measures are probably going to prove futile. In this case, you might even want to consider the nuclear option – erasing all data. However, this method isn’t foolproof. If your phone is ofðine, it’ll only be wiped the next time it comes online. But if it never comes online again, your data will remain intact. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that Google will be able to properly wipe any memory cards in the phone.

If Google isn’t good enough…

3Ζ&785( CERBERUS

There are also dedicated anti-theft solutions like the Cerberus app. Cerberus offers more advanced functions than Google, and you’ll be able to pull your device’s location history to find out where it’s been, and even get a list of the last calls sent and received. It’s primarily aimed at locating stolen phones, so you can also take pictures, screenshots, and

record videos to attempt to identify the thief. Audio recording is within its capabilities as well, and you’ll be able to remotely activate the microphone. Of course, you don’t want the thief to know that you’re spying on him (or her), and you’ll be able to hide Cerberus from the app drawer.

USING THE CAST APP Singtel’s Cast app is currently available for download, but only Singtel Postpaid Mobile subscribers are eligible to subscribe to Cast and access content on the Cast app after signing up for a content pack within Singapore. There are four ways to subscribe: through the My Singtel app, by calling the 1609 hotline, visiting a Singtel Retail Shop, and using the ofïcial Cast website, or the ofïcial Singtel online shop site. Users have an easy way to check their subscriptions from the Cast app. It’s tucked away to the menu on the left. The Cast app recognizes a user’s subscription based on the phone number used to acquire the respective content packs. The menu

offers basic controls, such as the toggling of mobile data usage and accessing of downloaded shows (yes, you can watch your stuff ofðine). Do note: only one active stream is allowed from one subscribed mobile number - this means if your phone is streaming content from Cast, the other devices with your Cast account won’t stream your content. Singtel said that Cast SD content is pegged at 576p – that’s higher than the conventional YouTube SD resolution (usually up to 480p). 576p is actually closer to the PAL standard for DVD resolution (720 x 576 pixels resolution). Like your typical ondemand services, you can start and stop shows as and when you desire.

WHAT CAN I GET ON CAST? Each Cast content pack is $4.90 per month with a 12-month subscription contract ($6.90 without contract), and they are: Viu Premium: This is recommended for users who want the absolute latest Korean content from Viu, with a smattering of Japanese dramas. Getting this content pack requires both the Cast app and Viu app. If you are using the Viu Premium content pack, the Cast app will simply ïre up Viu for you. Kids Pack: Features the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels, and other popular children entertainment programs. Asian Hits Pack: Features up to 1,000 hours of popular hit movies, entertainment and drama series from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China in their original

languages. Hallyu Pack: Different from the Viu pack, this offers Korean entertainment from top Korean broadcasters on popular channels such as ONE, Oh!K and KBS World.

EXPLOITING THE CHEAPER MOBILE DATA OFFER Customers who pick up a Cast content pack can buy additional 1GB of mobile data at $3 per month. It doesn’t matter if you are on a 12-month Cast subscription or otherwise – any Cast user can get this 1GB offer for every content pack they subscribe to. Since Cast offers four content packs at the moment, so you can theoretically boost your mobile data bundle by 4GB, but only if you pay 4 x $7.90 per month for

everything ($31.60/month). That mobile data will be tagged onto your existing postpaid plan, and it’s added to your total bundled data allowance. The My Singtel app is best at managing your content pack subscriptions. Since each pack is tied to an individual postpaid number, you can purchase the pack’s subscription via the “Browse Add-Ons” menu inside your My Singtel app.

OFFLINE VIDEO WATCHING

@YLiu Hongzuo

You can download content into your phone from Cast. Not only is this convenient in poor data reception areas, but this option can also be useful if you’re overseas for short periods as you will not be able to access streaming content when travelling abroad. One thing to note however, is while Cast does not limit the number of videos downloaded, content will remain under the “Download” section of the app for only seven days.

Cast focuses on Asian content, and they package the content based on the genre, and they cost a fraction of a full Netðix subscription. Cast was also designed with the mobile format in mind, and it bundles cheaper mobile data for video-watching. In a way, it’s like an alternative for folks who don’t go for western content, and it’s designed for a great mobile video-watching experience.

WHAT OTHER CARS DO PORSCHE MAKE? So, you want a Porsche but don’t want a 911. Well, the good news is that Porsche makes a lot of different cars these days so there’s bound to be something for everybody out there. Just remember to bring the cash.

The 718 Cayman and Boxster Don’t believe anyone who tells you that the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster are for people who cannot afford the 911. The Cayman and Boxster are well sorted cars and a real pleasure to drive.

The Panamera The Panamera is the closest any big 4-door saloon can come to feeling like a sports car. Don’t be fooled by its dimensions, it drives brilliantly and is quick to boot too. The bad boy Panamera Turbo puts out 550hp and can propel to 100km/h under 4 seconds, which is ludicrous for an executive-size saloon.

The Macan The Macan is positioned as a compact sports SUV and is the latest addition to the Porsche family. Looks are genuinely deceiving because the Macan goes just as fast and handles just as well as smaller sports cars.

GETTING STARTED WITH CONTEXTS Projects are one way to organize actions in OmniFocus, and Contexts are another. Simply put, a Context is whatever that is needed in order to complete an action. That can mean a place, a thing or a person. Where projects let you see all the steps you need to take to accomplish a goal, contexts let you see what you need to see, when you need to see it. Projects and Contexts aren’t exclusive. An action can have both a Project and a Context (but only one of each, an action cannot have multiple projects or contexts). So, for example, you can give the actions that you can only complete at home a ‘Home’ context, and the actions that you can only complete in the ofĂŻce an ‘OfĂŻce’ context. You can begin to see why Contexts are so powerful. When you’re in the ofĂŻce, you don’t need to see actions that are meant for home. When you view by Context, you’ll only see what actions you have remaining for where you are in the moment. To start using Contexts, you can start with OmniFocus’ default contexts. When you make a new action, choose which Context you want to add, below the Projects ĂŻeld.

The Cayenne When Porsche was in trouble in the early part of the last decade, it was the Cayenne that rescued it. Though it was considered by many to be big and unattractive, it somehow struck a cord with buyers and single-handedly kickstarted the trend of large luxury SUVs.

Last month, we covered how to start with sync, actions and projects in OmniFocus 2. For part two of this guide, we’re going to look at how we can use locations and dates to organize our actions.

Editing OmniFocus’ default contexts There are a few ways to edit OmniFocus’ default contexts. To add a new Context of your own:

To edit the name of an existing context 1. On the Home screen, tap ‘Contexts.’

1. On the Home screen, tap ‘Contexts.’

2. Tap the name of the Context you want to change.

2. Tap the ‘+@@@’ symbol on the top right.

3. Tap the name again.

3. Type in the name of your new Context.

4. In the context’s Settings page, tap its name again to bring up the keyboard, and edit its name.

Delete Contexts, or rearrange them, using the ‘Edit’ command 1. On the Home screen, tap ‘Contexts.’ 2. Tap ‘Edit’ on the top right.

To delete existing Contexts, and sub-contexts, using the ‘Delete’ command 1. On the Home screen, tap ‘Contexts.’ 2. Swipe left on the Context you want to delete. 3. Tap on the ‘Delete’ command that appears.

Adding actions in Contexts 1. On the Home screen, tap ‘Contexts.’ 2. Tap the Context you want to add a new action in.

3. Tap on the red circles with a ‘-’ sign next to the Context you want to delete.

3. Tap the ‘+’ sign on the top right.

4. Drag the ‘hamburger’ symbol (the three horizontal lines) to rearrange the Contexts’ order.

5. Type in your new action.

4. Select ‘New Action.’

GETTING STARTED WITH DUE DATES Dates are another way you can manage your day-to-day actions. There are two kinds of dates you can set, Due Dates and Deferred Dates. We’ll start with Due Dates; which are simply times when the actions are due. When you set a due date for an action; say, the 1st of October 5pm, that action will show up in the Forecast view as due, on the 1st of October. To set a Due Date 1. Tap on the action on which you want to set a Due Date.

Get notiïed on Due Dates You can also set up OmniFocus notiïcations, so you get a number badge on the OmniFocus icon with the number of actions due that day, as well as reminders when actions have reached their due time and not been completed. If, during setup, you chose not to get notiïcations, here’s how you can get them.

How to set closer notiïcations I ïnd OmniFocus’ default setting of 2 days for actions that are ‘Due Soon’ to be too far in advance; I only want to see what’s really due soon in the immediate future. To change this:

1. Pull down on the Home screen to access the Menu.

2. Tap on ‘Settings.’

2. Tap on ‘Settings.’ 3. Scroll down to ïnd, and tap on ‘Sounds, Alerts, and Badges.’

2. In the action’s Settings page, tap ‘Due’.

4. Tap ‘Allow Notiïcations.’

3. Choose the action’s due date and time.

5. When iOS asks if you want OmniFocus to send you notiïcations, tap ‘OK.’ 6. OmniFocus will now show badge counts for actions which are due soon and overdue.

+:0_6(37(0%(5

1. Pull down on the Home screen to access the Menu.

3. Scroll down to ïnd, and tap on ‘“Due Soon” Means.’ 4. Change how far in advance you’d like ‘due soon’ to mean (mine is set to ‘24 hours’). Due Dates are a good way to handle time-sensitive actions, which must be completed on a given date. They can also be a way to help you move projects forward; for example, I can set a Due Date for today to book a ðight to Hong Kong, and a Due Date for tomorrow to book a hotel. Setting Due Dates this way helps me to make sure I act on my actions as the week goes on.

By default, deferred actions are shown as grayed-out items. To hide them: Pull down on the screen in any page other than the Home page (for example, on the Projects screen). Tap on ‘View’ By default, OmniFocus shows all ‘Remaining’ items, which includes actions and projects that are blocked, in the future (deferred) and which have been put on hold. Tap on ‘Available’ to only show items that are available to act on now. Actions and projects that have been deferred should now be hidden from view.

Even though the campus is located in its origin country, it came with facilities that clued us in on Huawei’s mission towards global dominance. For example, the campus has a residence area for foreign and local employees. The accommodation comes with all the key facilities found in private condominiums, which looks like its tenants can stay and live a life in relative comfort. In a place as big as China, having your workplace just one shuttle bus ride away is an understated convenience. At the same time, it hinted the ominous price to pay for globalization – your life will see Huawei at every turn and corner, at work or at play, awake or asleep. But that’s for their staff to worry about. Besides the condos and ofïces for its workers, we found the grounds

ïlled with various artifacts that broke the monotony of work itself. Between each building and complex, you will ïnd meticulously trimmed ðora, idyllic walkways, and thoughtfully-chosen public art – it was immediately clear to us that the Huawei compound isn’t purely functional. The campus was massive, with 10 complexes containing four blocks each. Perhaps it was the constraints of a tour, but we felt the transition from ofïce to outdoors jarring and disorienting. In one moment, we’d be looking at modernized ofïces while they stuffed us with marketing strategies, and the next would see us strolling through a charming, man-made lake that kept a herd of black swans (imported from Australia, no less).

where ïnished Huawei P9 handsets went through the proverbial mill. Like a ïrsttimer inside a highly specialized fetish dungeon, we were introduced to every machine’s scope of torture.

o cope with its 60,000 employees onsite, there are a total of 10 canteens. The one “canteen” we visited felt similar to a swanky mall’s restaurant ðoor. Staff have a choice between different cuisine types, plus a hotel-buffet outlet. Employees pay for the meals with their staff pass, which stores credit for meals taken on-campus – if you ran out of lunch money, you simply pay out of your pocket. Unlike other western tech giants, Huawei was good at providing the best resources, while reminding everyone that they are here to get the job done. The Huawei folks were eager to show us their “F1 experience center” (F1 being the name of the ïrst “F” building, not Formula 1). This exhibit shoecases Huawei’s futuristic technology and research, such as their work on bringing 10Gbps at 1ms latency connectivity for mobile devices, and their LampSite small cell technology for indoor cellular data – Huawei and Singaporean telco StarHub are actually trying that out within Marina Bay Sands itself. While technical, the exhibit did shed some light on how Huawei was able to rake in US$60.8 billion revenue in 2015.

An impressive drop test directed a P9 into the ðoor. The process was repeated twice, for every side and corner of the smartphone. While it wasn’t our phone, we still felt palpitations when watching a phone greet concrete. Another corner had an interesting “jeans friction tester”. This machine simulates a women’s handbag ïlled with personal effects (makeup, coins, and even dust). The phone goes into this machine and it’s jostled relentlessly for an eternity. In a whirlwind of explanations, we witnessed the phone’s trial by literal ïre and pretend-jeans, and it is far beyond what an average smartphone user can put it through. Huawei users can rest easy. While the campus tour was designed to be a showcase of Huawei’s strengths, exactitude, and staff welfare, we left with a better understanding about how one Chinese tech giant progressed so quickly by making most out of its culture. This is about getting big, and then getting good – done right.

“HUAWEI WAS VERY EAGER TO SHOW US THEIR “F1 EXPERIENCE CENTER” (F1 BEING THE NAME OF THE FIRST “F” BUILDING, NOT FORMULA 1). THIS EXHIBIT SHOWCASES HUAWEI’S FUTURISTIC TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH...”

To further emphasize how Huawei is really unlike a typical “Made In China” ïrm, we visited their device testing lab –
