Athletics at Mount Marty College is a part of the student experience. More than fifty percent of our students are involved in intercollegiate competition and even more are engaged in recreational sports. Mount Marty College core values are defined by our Benedictine heritage and contribute to the character of our athletes. Awareness of God, Community, Hospitality, and Lifelong

Learning are the values of Mount Marty and the foundation for success in each student’s journey through life. We are proud of our values, our student athletes as well as the Mount Marty College faculty and coaching staff that guide them. We hope that you enjoy watching our teams compete and thank you for putting your faith in Lancer athletics.

Chuck Iverson

Lancer Athletic Director Welcome to Mount Marty College and the 2013-2014 sport season. We hope you enjoy the college and the events. Hospitality is one of the core values of the college – and as such, it is one of our goals to be the best possible host. Mount Marty College has a reputation of exhibiting good sportsmanship. We endorse the principles of the NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative, in which the Lancer Athletic program is a charter member and has been named as a “Champions of Character Institution” since the start of the initiative. Please help us in following the core values of the “Champions of Character” – respect, responsibility, integrity,

servant leadership, and sportsmanship. The 2012-2013 year was a great year for Lancer athletics. With many of the key athletes returning, and another great recruiting class, we are certainly excited about the 2013-2014 seasons. We feel you will be too. I believe you will be impressed with the quality of student-athletes that represent the Lancers at all the venues. We pride ourselves in that our athletes are students first but at the same time they compete as hard as any athletes in the country. Thanks for attending the event and please come often.

athletic training & sports medicine The athletic training services at MMC exist to provide studentathletes with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest environment possible. MMC athletic training services focus on prevention, recognition, evaluation, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and first aid care of injuries and illnesses. The athletic training staff and coaches work with our team physicians in providing the best care and counseling for treatment options. Athletes with injuries and/ or illnesses (i.e. colds, viruses, allergies, infections, skin disorders, chest pain) will be evaluated by an athletic trainer and placed

on a course of treatment that may include visiting with the team physician, or another physician depending availability of their services and type of injury/illness. Our goal is to offer the medical resources necessary to allow our student-athletes to reach their maximal potential and to return to play as soon as it is medically safe. This is accomplished through the professional relationship and the support of local physicians who specialize in various areas of healthcare relative to sports medicine.

naia & gpac national association of intercollegiate athletics Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletic programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day - be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The All-American Scholar-Athlete program, a long-standing

NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student-athletes with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletic programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust - a relationship strengthened year after year. The future of 60,000 young people is too important to handle any other way.

great plains athletic conference The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affiliated conference of the NAIA, consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the league retains five of its six charter members Concordia, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2000-2001. Two schools from Sioux City, Iowa entered the conference soon after. Briar Cliff College entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became a member starting with the 2003-2004 school year.

The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women and ten for men - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the final league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Wrestling was added as a sanctioned GPAC sport for 2006-2007. The GPAC is the only NAIA conference in the country to sponsor wrestling. Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, the GPAC started awarding the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to be presently annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports. The award was named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, former President of Dana College, who served as the first chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents.

naia champions of character The Mount Marty College Athletic Department is a charter member of the NAIA’s Champions of Character, an initiative started in 2000 to develop character among its membership. The NAIA identified five core character values that an institution would need to address with its athletes and staff in order to be a member, with the idea that the NAIA and its members are in a

unique position to make a change in the culture of sport. The five core character values are respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Each year the Mount Marty athletic department selects an individual who best represents these core character value. Past winners of the award are:

2013 hall of fame inductees 1972-73 volleyball team

40 years ago this fall, in just the 3rd year of intercollegiate competition for Mount Marty College, the Lancer volleyball team was “undersized and still learning the game” according to Head Coach Judy Faunce. They started the season 1-2, but Coach Faunce stated in an article in the paper that there is “no limit to what we can do.” She obviously knew what she was talking about as the team went on a terror, beating SDSU, USD, and Augustana, among others during the rest of the season to finish the regular season at 15-4, and being the top seed for the South Dakota State Volleyball Championship. They proved the seed was not wrong as they swept the 10 team tournament without a loss, and was named the South Dakota State College Volleyball Champions.

1997-1998 men’s basketball team

The highest national finish for a Lancer athletic team occurred 15 years ago this spring when the Lancer Men’s Basketball team went to the NAIA National Tournament in Idaho, winning three tough games before losing in national semifinal game to the eventual national champions by 2 points. The Final 4 team also won the regular season SDIC title – their second conference championship in 3 years. The team also won both Northwestern and Dakota Wesleyan Tournaments and finished the season with a 23-9 record.

katie pesicka

A 2002 graduate of Mount Marty College, Katie completed her career as one of the all time greats to play basketball for Mount Marty College. The four-year starter for the Lancers is the only player in history to score over 1000 points, grab over 500 rebounds and dish out over 500 assists. Add to this the fact that she ranks 3rd all time in steals with 273 and she is listed in the top 10 career charts in 8 of the remaining 15 categories and the conclusion is pretty obvious. During her career, Katie was selected to All-Conference teams each year, and was also named the SDIC conference “Newcomer of the Year” and “Defensive Player of the Year”. She was also selected the GPAC conference winner of the Emil S. Liston award, presented to the conference’s outstanding basketball player showing athletic and scholastic achievement and selected to the WBCA honorable mention All-American Team.

season preview & schedule After coming away with the same amount of wins and losses in both the 2011 and 2012 season, the Lancers have high hopes for the 2013 season. Even though the wins and losses where the same, there were still some differences in stats with more kills, set assists, block assists, higher attacking percentage, and higher assists per game to still see the improvements in the Lancer Volleyball program from 2011 to 2012. Last year the Lancers had 20 set games that were lost by two points.

The Lancers return 8 letter winners and GPAC All-Conference Honorable Mentioned Caitlyn Illg. There will also be seven incoming freshman to help the current Lancers in the 2013 season. The Lancers confidence continues to build as they keep an up-tempo offense and put into place a whole new serve receive system that worked well for the Lancers during their spring season.

men’s soccer preview The 2013 Men’s soccer team looks to be much improved from the 2012 campaign. There will be some tough holes to fill in the roster with the loss of Tyler Neu, Peter Shepherd, Josh Koch and Jose Marquez to graduation but the young talent on the roster

saw much improvement throughout the year last year. With the addition of another talented recruiting class, the Lancers look to be a much faster and aggressive team. Success early in the season will be the key to making a push in the tough GPAC schedule.

women’s basketball season preview The Lancers are coming off an up-and-down season that saw them finish with a 17-14 record. Inconsistency plagued the squad throughout the year as they had some big wins and some disappointing losses. The loss of 6 seniors will mean there will be several new faces getting extensive playing time this season. Road wins over Morningside, who was ranked #3 in the country at the time, and Dakota Wesleyan, who was ranked in the Top 25 at the time, were indicators of the talent of the team. The 13-14 squad will be gunning for Coach Schlimgen’s 3rd NAIA National Tournament Appearance.

The Lancers will look to their 7 returning letter winners to lead the team this season. 1st Team All-GPAC Guard, April Winne, was also named an Honorable Mention All-American while Allison De Kam was named Honorable Mention All-GPAC for her work in the paint. Eight talented newcomers (7 freshmen, 1 sophomore transfer) will add size, quickness, talent, and scoring ability. The coaching staff plans to implement more full court defense to take advantage of quickness and depth. A few things the Lancers will need to focus on will be limiting turnovers, doing a better job of rebounding, and allowing a lower FG % on both 2’s and 3’s.

men’s basketball season preview The men’s basketball team enters the 2013-2014 season as a program in a current shift. Coach Baker, in his first season as Head Coach, inherits a team that is very young. The Lancers return only four players who played varsity minutes last season. Juniors Bud Smith, Tyler Payer, and Chris Richardson will be relied on heavily to lead this team. Sophomore Alex Irvine also looks to contribute and continue to grow on a strong individual ending of last season.

In addition to these four, Coach Baker has four more returning Lancers along with nine incoming freshmen. Joining Baker on staff is assistant Nick Mabbutt. With so many new faces, the Lancers hope to establish a brand of basketball that is exciting for the players and fans. This season will test the youthfulness of the team as they compete against a very strong GPAC conference schedule.

women’s track & field season preview The 2013-14 MMC women’s track and field team will be led by a talented group of athletes. Katie Smelker, a senior from Stratton, CO, will lead the distance group. Smelker currently holds the school records in the indoor 5k, the outdoor 5k, 10k, ½ marathon, and marathon distances. She was an All-American in the 10k at the outdoor national meet in Marion, IN in May of 2013. Smelker will have help from Kaylee Fly, a senior from Omaha, NE, as she currently holds the school record for the indoor 3k distance. Incoming freshman that will add depth to the distance are: Karen Mayfield, Watertown, SD. who has run 11:49 for 3200 meters and completed a couple of marathons; Mandy O’Malley, North Platte, NE, has run 11:56 for 3200 and 5:32 for 1600 to place 5th in the Nebraska Class D state track meet in the spring of 2013; and Tiffany Tramp, Crofton, NE, had a stellar distance career in high school. Jordyn Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, SD, will lead the mid-distance events. Jordyn ran a 2:25 800 last year and is well on her way to bigger things this year. Incoming freshman that will help in the mid-distance are: Berkley Rietveld, Mitchell, SD, who has run 2:25 for 800 meters and 62 for 400 meters. The jumping events will be led by Abbey VanDenBerg, a junior from Sioux Falls, SD. Abbey had a great first couple of years in the triple jump as she was 10th at the 2012 outdoor national meet as a freshman and followed up with a 6th place finish in the triple jump indoor in the spring of 2013 to earn All-American status. She also was 12th at the 2013 national outdoor meet in Marion, IN in the triple jump. Abbey currently holds the indoor 60 meter school record, indoor and outdoor triple jump record, and is a member of the outdoor 4 x 100 meter relay school record squad. She will be joined by a core of talented jumpers in: Emily Anderson, a Junior from Yankton, SD, who has high jumped 5’2 and was All-Conference in the high jump last Indoor season; Sadie Fedor, a sophomore from Monticello, MN, was AllConference in the triple jump last indoor season; freshman, Sierra Kloth from Sioux Falls O’Gorman, jumped 5’2” in the high jump; and Caitlin Davis from Elk Point, SD will also help out as she has long jumped right at 17’ and holds her high school’s school record and competed at the South Dakota State track meet in 2013.

The sprinters/hurdlers will be led by juniors Holly Hegge, a junior from Crofton, NE and Kelli Norrid Curtis, a junior from Winner, SD, both members of the school record 4 x 100 relay team from 2012, April Winne, a senior from Olivet, SD, and Abbey VanDenBerg, a Junior from Sioux Falls, SD. This group was All-Conference in the 4 x 100 relay outdoor in 2013. Kelli Norrid Curtis was also All-Conference in the 100 and 400 hurdles in the 2012 outdoor season. Rachel Simons, a freshman from Larchwood, IA, will be a big asset to the sprinters as she qualified and ran in the 100 and 200 dash at the Iowa State track meet in the spring of 2013. Samantha Rus, a senior from Dell Rapids, SD, will lead the team in the throwing events and has thrown over 40 feet in the shot put. She will have some talented freshman added to the squad this season like Allison Cross from Tri-Valley High School who placed 2nd in the shot put and the discus at the South Dakota State Class A track meet in the spring of 2013. Overall, the MMC women look to have more depth than in years past and hope to improve on their 8th place finish indoors and 9th place finish outdoors in the GPAC Conference.

men’s golf men’s season preview Graduation took 6 athletes off last years team that will all be missed. Our newcomers will need to be ready to help contribute to the team. We will lean heavily on our 2 returners, senior Chris Hoffman and sophmore Luke Loecker, to lead us both in scoring

and in leadership. Our success will be judged on day-to-day improvement from each player and by our team scores improving from one tournament to the next.

women’s golf women’s season preview The Women’s Golf Team is coming off a 7th place conference finish last year, the best finish in the program’s 4 year history. With 5 letter winners returning and 4 strong freshmen joining the team, we look to continue moving up the conference standings. The added depth should help push each golfer to improve their game even more.

Caitlyn Roth, a 2 time All-GPAC performer, will be looked to for leadership and setting a strong example for the team. The squad needs to work on consistency and not let one bad hole ruin a round. Like all golfers, the short game (chipping and putting) is always the key for to posting low scores.

The MMC Archery Club program is open to all Mount Marty College students regardless of experience. They must meet and maintain at least a minimum of 2.0 GPA and maintain a full time student status (12 credits). Entry-level equipment (compound and re-curve bows) will be available as needed. U.S. Collegiate Archery (USCA) is open to all full-time college students. They compete in tournaments throughout the U.S. in the college division. Each year honors are bestowed on the top athletes, including National Championships, All-Academic Archery Team and All-American recognition. Mount Marty’s program is affiliated with the National Field Archery Association headquartered in Yankton. Student-athletes train in the world-class Olympic-rated indoor and outdoor training facility at the Easton Yankton Archery Center. Mount Marty’s club program was made possible through a grant from the Easton Sports Development Foundation Grant Program and the National Field Archery Association Foundation.
