Unity at funeral of AmaDlomo elder SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE THERE was a glimpse of unity among the Dlomo royal family members as they assembled during the funeral of Nozolile Mtirara at Mqhekezweni Great Place near Mthatha last Saturday.

They have been through a lot of battles and differences, but at the funeral Mtiraras, Matanzimas, Mandelas, Dalindyebos, Joyis and Mnqandenis gathered under one roof with their only mission to mourn for an elder, Nozolile Ellen Mtirara (95).

All the parties, who do not see eye-to-eye on some matters of the Amadlomo, in particular the recent issue of the AbaThembu kingship, were under one umbrella and at times they were talking together.

Even the proposed regent of imprisoned King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, his son Azenathi, was present, flanked by some of the iinkosi zaBathembu.

Nozolile was the wife of Chief Justice Mtirara, who was the cousin of the late Nelson Mandela.

Mandela grew up in Mqhekezweni under the

guardianship of Chief Jongintaba Mtirara, who was Justice’s father.

Justice and Nelson grew up together, but later Chief Jongintaba organised a wife for his son (ukuzekelwa).

Nelson and Justice, avoiding Jongintaba to organise wives for themselves, sold a cow in the nearest shop and left for Johannesburg.

But Justice came back home because of the difficulties he faced in Johannesburg and tied the knot with Nozolile. They had six children.

Addressing the mourners, Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima, speaking on behalf of Amadlomo elders, called for respect within the royal family and said people must stop using the media to divulge internal matters of Amadlomo.

He said every member of the royal family must ensure he or she maintained peace and unity among the family. The funeral was attended by the OR Tambo, KSD and Ngcobo mayors, MECs, members of the provincial legislature, Contralesa, Chief Phathekile Holomisa and inkosi yamaHegebe and many more dignitaries.

Man sentenced for raping woman, 75 A YOUNG man who pleaded guilty to raping a 75-year-old woman was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Tsomo Regional Court last week.

Samkelo Tshayisa, 21, waylaid and raped the elderly woman while she was going alone from her locality to another one.

The incident happened on May 24 last year at Dudumashe locality in Ngqamakhwe.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha

said Tshayisa had grabbed the woman from behind and throttled her, and had then started raping her.

“Tshayisa was chased by the community and they arrested him. A case of rape was opened at the Ngqamakhwe police station,” he said.

“He pleaded guilty to rape and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.”

Manatha said the case had been efficiently investigated by the Butterworth family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit. – REPORTER

Suspect sought for rape of elderly Willowvale woman BABALWA NDLANYA THE Willlowvale police are investigating the alleged rape of an elderly woman at Esithawini location in Willowvale on January 30.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the victim had been asleep with her 10-year-old granddaughter on the night of the incident.

“The suspect, who is known to both the victim and the granddaughter, kicked the

door open,” Manatha said.

“He allegedly attacked the victim and raped her. The victim cried loudly and this caused the perpetrator to run away.”

Manatha said police officers were expected to arrest the suspect very soon.

Butterworth cluster commander Brigadier Stanley Sibidla condemned the behaviour of men who continued abusing women.

“The police will try by all means to arrest this perpetrator. We will not rest until he is arrested,” he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Mduduzi Godlwana said robbers approached G4S personnel while they were uploading collected money from the garage.

He said the robbers stole the money and began to fire shots.

During the shoot-out between G4S personnel and the robbers, a man working at the garage and a woman who was a customer were shot in the legs.

The customer is in a critical condition

) A 30 year-old man from Mbhongweni location in Imizizi A/A Mbizana has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murdering a man over liquor.

Bongani Mkhwanazi shot Zizamele Mndiyata with a fire arm at a tavern on October 10, 2013 at about 20:45.

Mkhwanazi demanded the liquor by force from the deceased and told him that he had no money to pay the liquor. Thereafter Mkhwanazi shot and killed the deceased. The fire arm was recovered from Mkhwanazi.

) Bulelani Madiya (28) from Biniza location, Amadiba A/A in Mbizana has been convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R5 000 fine as admission of guilt for being illegally in possession of a fire-arm and ammunition.

Madiya was arrested in June 2014 in a police raid at a tavern.

The police were searching for drugs and illegal fire arms.

Madiya was found in possession of a home made fire-arm and four shells.

The accused was sentenced at Mbizana Magistrate court last Monday, February 01, 2016.

More young people needed in agriculture – Qoboshiyane BUNTU GOTYWA RURAL Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane was at Ludeke Primary School in Libode recently as part of his project to enable schools to produce pupils who consider a career in agriculture or rural development.

Ludeke is one of several schools adopted by the MEC with the aim of providing technical support and the maintenance of school gardens.

The department gave hundreds of seedlings for the school and other surrounding schools.

Qoboshiyane said he wanted more involvement in agriculture from young people and for the country to look at the Eastern Cape when it came to ploughing.

“We want people to return to gardening.

We want to be able to produce our own milk, eggs to help with the schools feeding scheme.”

Principal Thulani Giqwa said he was humbled by the presence of the MEC at his school.

He said the efforts by the MEC brought hope and would inspire many children from the location - even the ones who had given up on education.

“These seedlings will assist us greatly. To have our own garden will assist us in using our nutrition funds for other things that the school needs.

“We don’t have much and we have to save every bit we can to make our school better,” Giqwa said.

The principal said most of the pupils in the area were victims of social ills like unemployment.

“Most kids here depend solely on grants which happen to support the whole family and those situations are demoralising for the children,” he said.

The MEC is working closely with the Department of Education to ensure the success of his adopt-a-school project.

Department of Education officials have been deployed to ensure proper links between the adopted schools and the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform.

Qoboshiyane was joined by the Progres-

sive Youth Alliance in also handing out 100 pairs of shoes to needy children at the school.

The alliance has embarked on a back-toschool campaign to supply children from disadvantaged schools with school shoes.

New Eastern Cape business chamber formed SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE BUSINESSMEN in the Eastern Cape have established a new business chamber called the Eastern Cape Chamber of Business (ECCOB).

The establishment of the chamber took

place in East London on January 29.

The main objective of its establishment is to ensure that black people participate in the economy of the province.

UDM is calling on all their members, supporters and the people of KSD Municipality to double their efforts in ensuring they take it on themselves to bring better governance of their municipality.

“We are certain that if we take bold steps, we can save this municipality from collapsing.”

IHLM hosts Wetlands Day LWANDO NONKONYANA INGQUZA Hill Local Municipality and Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency held a Wetlands Day last Tuesday at Mhlanga Junior Secondary School in Flagstaff to educate and outline the importance of keeping both natural and artificial wet areas safe.

Learners from Mhlanga school and the surrounding schools under Mkhambathi Environmental Education and Awareness Forum, parents, teachers, traditional and political leaders attended the event.

Also forming part of the gathering were representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism (DEAT), SAPS, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), Working on Fire (WOF) and the Department of Economic Development, En-

vironmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT).

Councillor Bambezakhe Goya, on behalf of IHLM Mayor Pat Mdingi, highlighted the importance of conserving these areas. He said everyone must own this and school children are a relevant crowd to be educated on this subject.

“We should embrace these wetlands as it is our responsibility as communities to conserve them.

“People should make it a point that they educate their children against destroying places like lakes, springs, swamps, etc. as they all contribute to a lot of living inhabitants,” he said.

All speakers urged the communities to take it upon themselves in making sure wetlands are protected.

SAPS run school safety awareness

REPORTER THE SAPS in Mbizana together with government departments embarked on a school safety programme around Mbizana last Monday (February 1).

Several high schools including Village and Tshayingca Senior Secondary Schools were part of the campaign.

SAPS Spokesperson in the Mount Ayliff cluster, Mlungisi Matidane, said that the purpose of the event was to ensure that

drugs and dangerous weapons are removed from the children – especially on school grounds.

“The team also checked for other hazards around the schools such as cleanliness of toilets and also cutting of grass and small shrubs around the schools,” said Matidane.

He said that the departments of Education and Health appreciated the event and advised the stakeholders that the event must continue and include other schools. In doing so it will ensure that there is good cooperation between schools.

Ingquza Hill local municipality Library Services Manager Wezo Nqalo said that the celebrations are held annually to encourage especially children to utilize libraries in their schools and those around them.

“We are hosting the celebrations in partnership with the Department of Education since the schools belong to them and we try by all means to keep our libraries wellequipped with books that are useful to the

school’s curriculum,” said Nqalo.

He said that the competition will be on a local level where the learners will be competing in different categories including poetry citing, dramatic poetry, spelling, book discussion, reading and scrabble.

Nobulali Ndungane, a teacher from Hlabathi Junior Secondary School said that the initiative is very effective in assisting

the learners academically.

“Such activities encourage the children to read books, something that is not really a priority to them but is vital for their studies,” said Ndungane.

Hlabathi Jss had won R100 000 at the National Champions of School’s Environmental Awards last year adding to the R30 000 they scooped at the provincial awards for the same competition.

Teachers receive help to improve curriculum coverage REPORTER SUBJECT advisors from the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and subject specialists and change agents from the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) are working together to ensure the curriculum is completely covered by teachers in the Mount Frere district.

Falling behind on curriculum coverage has been among the main reasons for the poor performance of many schools in the Eastern Cape, indicating that teacher professionalisation and support are key to improved learning outcomes in these schools.

To achieve this, the DBE’s English first additional language subject advisors, along with maths and foundation phase specialists and change agents from the NECT, recently completed training on curriculum planning and tracking curriculum coverage, and will be running a series of workshops at Mt. Frere schools to orientate the teachers on using the planning and tracking tools.

Lawrence Sithole, Maths G.E.T specialist, expressed excitement about the upcoming workshops, saying many of the teachers he supports at various schools will be glad to receive the tool. “Many of my teachers have talked about the covering of curriculum in its entirety and it has been a problem for many.

This tool will enable teachers to know exactly where they are and where they need to be to finish the curriculum,” said Sithole.

On many occasions, learners have complained that they had been assessed during examinations on topics they never studied in

class and thus failed. The planning and tracking tools will guide both teachers and the school management team (SMT) in tracking the progress and the pace at which teachers need to work.

Foundation phase home language specialist, Noxolo Skele, noted that the planner and tracker are user-friendly and exciting to use.

“These tools are exciting. We have already introduced these to the teachers during the 4th term of 2015 and they are excited about it. Plus, this current tool also has a learner-activity book, which is also CAPS- aligned,” said Skele.

Skele commented that teachers she has spoken to while preparing for the upcoming school-based workshops also sounded excited

about the tool. “They make mention of the 4th term trackers, which helped them a lot, and they are looking forward to the coming workshops,” added Skele.

This sentiment was echoed by Phatheka Mfino of the DBE: “This will bring about a lot of improvement in our schools. We won’t be talking about content gap challenges anymore, because the whole content of the curriculum would have been covered,” she said.

The NECT works to ensure that turn around processes at schools translates to improved performance by the learners, the professionalisation of teachers and the smooth running of the schools by SMTs and governing bodies.

‘Agriculture is the diamond of Transkei’ SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE AN 80-year-old Mthatha woman says there is nothing that can terminate her relationship with agriculture because it is her bread and butter as well as her hobby.

Ntsimbini-born Ntombomzi Madinga said the diamond of the Transkei was agriculture and there was no other way to curb poverty besides restoring the importance of agriculture in the minds of the people of this area.

“Since we don’t have mines, they must know how to use the land and get their hands dirty and that will result in good endings,” she said.

“It is not our culture to buy everything from the shop. As for me, I buy only cooking oil, rice and a few other things which I am unable to produce from the soil.”

When the Express crew arrived at her home in PRD Camp next to Murumuru, Mthatha, she she had just come back from selling her veggies at shops around Mthatha and mielies at government offices in buildings like Botha Sigcau, PRD. Customers are also flocking in large numbers to her home to buy chickens and vegetables.

used to wake up in the morning and rush to hoe the big fields of maize which were owned by her father.

This had created a passion for agriculture in her heart.

She said that even at the Cicirha Training College in Mthatha where she did her teaching diploma she had excelled in agriculture as they had had their own plots.

Despite her age, mama Ntombomzi is still doing everything in her garden and the entire yard is green.

She said that even while she was working in Libode as an inspector she had never stopped using the land as she had hired unused fields and ploughed maize and sold it.

Even today Madinga uses herwhole yard to grow produce.

She also asks her neighbours to give her unused land and pays them with what she produced from that land.

She said the secret behind her healthy life was that she ate fresh food from the garden.

She said that caterers from Mthatha and the surrounding areas also placed orders with her because everything was fresh and from the soil rather than being kept in the refrigerator.

Madinga has been a good Samaritan to many people and has given a decent education to several poor children.

Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane recently delivered 200 chicks, 10 bags of feed, two hosepipes and rakes to her.

“It was the first time I had received a donation,” she said. “I thank you MEC Qhoboshiyane for choosing me.

I never expected this. It was the happiest day in my life.”

SITA asked to deal with certification backlogs REPORTER THE Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training has called on the State Information Technology Agency to prioritise the issue of certification backlogs for the (vocational) National Certificate in order to allow young South Africans an opportunity to be in the job market.

SITA came to brief the committee on the progress it has made since it last visited parliament in August last year, when it committed to clearing the backlog in six months.

The January 31 deadline was missed and the agency asked for an extension to June this year.

Committee chairperson Yvonne Phosa said failure to deliver on this area of service delivery affected many young people and their employability.

“The committee is adopting a zero-tolerance approach on this issue,” she said.

“This is about the lives of those students who are affected. These are people who are suffering as a result of poor performance by the entity despite all the efforts the government is making to increase access to education,” Phosa said.

“The failure to clear the backlogs talks to a lack of responsiveness to the needs of young South Africans and reflects badly on the entity.”

She asked SITA to outline the kind of support it required to meet the June deadline and said the committee would in the meantime raise the issue of SITA’s capacity, which seemed to be a challenge, with its counterparts in the Telecommunications and Postal Services Portfolio Committee.

Eastern Cape songbird Kanyisa suffers stroke SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE MTHATHA-BORN jazz artist Kanyisa was admitted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg after suffering a stroke on January 23.

The singer, whose real name is Nomdakazana Mnyaka, spent almost a week in hospital and is still undergoing treatment, which could mean that it will be a while before she returns to the stage.

The songbird is also under watchful eye of a physiotherapist, sometimes goes jogging and is responding well.

The hit-maker of Iyandibetha le ndoda fame confirmed this week that she had become serious ill recently while she was on a visit in Lenasia.

“My body became shrivelled, I was unable to feel my left side, I was dizzy and my mouth was twisted on one side. I was discharged from hospital on Tuesday last

week,” she said.

Mnyaka thanked her friends who had supported her all the way.

“I was seriously ill, but their support made me strong and defeated the stroke.”

Her experience has led to her deciding to commence a stroke-awareness campaign.

“I went through hell and I don’t want to see other people to go through what I have experienced.

“I need to give them information about the malady.

“Soon after I have fully recovered I will go on the streets of this country to make people aware of the dangers of suffering a stroke.”

She vowed that she would beat the stroke, no matter what.

She promised to release a track which would describe the illness and the time that she was in her hospital bed not feeling her body at all.

Sajonisi Youth Radio will be on air this year ­ Shozi BUNTU GOTYWA SAJONISI Youth Radio (SYR) station manager Smiso Shozi is confident that the station will finally go on air late this year.

The community station based in Port St Johns received its

broadcasting licence from the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in 2013.

The station was supposed to be on air by early 2014, but a lack of support meant the station could not broadcast at the earlier desired date.

Shozi said it had been difficult to secure funding when the station was supposed to go on air three years ago.

He did not want to dwell much on the detail about funding and where the support had finally come from, but he reassured the community of Port St Johns that

there was no need for panic.

“Things were different back then and now we have a couple of businesses who will support us.

“The people of Port St Johns and the OR Tambo region should not worry, Sajonisi Youth Radio will surely start broadcasting this year.

“We know that people have been patiently waiting for the oneand-only youth radio in the Eastern Cape that will cover the OR Tambo District Municipality.”

Shozi said the station was all about youth empowerment and the station had been built as a social movement.
