MEC condems1 484 RDPhouses AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA

ONE thousand four hundred and eighty-four (1484) RDP houses in Zimbane Valley have been condemned to be demolished by MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Helen Sauls August.

MILLISA MADIKIZELA

She said this during her visit in an effort to track progress made on this project and others in the OR Tambo district last Friday. “All these houses will be demolished and rebuilt and a new contractor had been appointed this year for rectification,” said Sauls August. MEC could not hide her disbelief on the state of the houses and the fact that beneficiaries had been waiting for houses since 1999 and some had moved into their houses even though they had not been completed. “These houses were poorly built without proper foundations; roofs are problematic with no specifications and it is clear that there was no proper facilitation,” said MEC. She said the new contractor is promising to rectify all these problems and as the department, they will hold them to that. “We have hope that with the new contractor things will be done according to the book and people can no longer be delayed their right to dignified houses of their own,” said MEC. The current scope of work in the project includes upgrading and construction of existing internal roads and associated storm water infrastructure, cleaning and maintenance of waterborne sewers. On behalf of the new contractors, MMP Contractors, Wantu Bugqwangu said there is a lot that needs to be corrected in the houses and infrastructure but they promise that by September 2014, all that will be history.

ECDC disbursed R56,4m to SMME’s REPORTER THE Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) recently announced that it had disbursed a total of R56,4 million to 169 small medium and micro enterprises (SMME’s) in the first six months of 2013/14. Releasing ECDC’s half-year results for the year beginning April 1 ending September 30, ECDC Chief Executive Officer Sitembele Mase said the majority of the disbursed funds went to businesses in the Amathole (R26,6 million) and OR Tambo (R20,6 million) District Municipalities. About R3,8 million went to businesses in Chris Hani, R2,6 million to Alfred Nzo, R2,3 million to Nelson Mandela Bay, R435 000 to Cacadu and R89 000 to Joe Gqabi District Municipalities respectively. Furthermore, R3,4 million of the dis-

bursed funds in this six-month period went to women-owned businesses, while R3,2 million went to youth-owned businesses. The construction sector was again the main beneficiary accounting for R23,9 million of disbursed funds, closely followed by the services sector at R24,4 million and manufacturing at R3,7 million. “The financier (ECDC) is pleased that the spread of its loan instruments is responding directly to the social and economic infrastructure needs of the Eastern Cape, making the corporation socially relevant. For example, ECDC can confirm that the majority (60%) of approved loan funding went to funding the construction and infrastructure development of the OR Tambo region. The number of jobs saved or facilitated through the loan funding stands at 538,” said Mase. “This is no surprise because there exists the multibillion rand Presidential Infrastructure

Coordination Commission (PICC) programme with dedicated infrastructure programmes nationwide. The biggest backlog is in the Eastern Cape and in particular the OR Tambo region. There is also the multimillion rand Accelerated School Infrastructure Development Initiative (Asidi) with the greatest need in that region. Our funding instruments are also responding to this need and our loan book reflects this reality.” Mase said the ECDC balance sheet remains strong with a net asset value of R970 million largely driven by the high value of investment property. “The balance sheet reflects the corporation’s assets, which show a healthy cash balance and an increase in ECDCs investment property portfolio. The property business remains ECDCs biggest asset, accounting for R639 million of its balance sheet, while loans account for R122 million.”

PSJ ready for the festive season SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE DESPITE the drowning of three people recently at Port St John’s Second beach, the mayor of the Port St Johns municipality vowed that they are more than ready to control the festive season in the town’s beaches. Councillor Danisile Mangqo was speaking with the Fever in an exclusive interview last week. He revealed that they had already employed 42 life savers for all eight of Port St John’s beaches. Second Beach is notorious for its incidents of shark attacks. Every year such incidents occur and the Natal Sharks Board last year had even sent a delegation to investigate what the cause of these incidents was. Cllr Mangqo said as the municipality

they were well prepared but that the success of the season also depends on the cooperation of the people who are visiting the PSJ. Two men and a woman drowned recently at Second Beach. It was unclear whether they were swept away by tides. Cllr Mangqo agreed that Second Beach was known as the most dangerous beach in the Transkei region. He urged people to take care when visiting the beach and said people should act responsibly and also take good care of their children. He also said that as the municipality they had conducted awareness campaigns on their beaches to make people aware of the tides. He said they are planning to build tidal pools so that people can swim in them and not in the sea.

This was confirmed by the man behind the initiative of having a radio station in the coastal town of Port St John’s, Simiso Shozi. It would not be the first time for Port St John’s to have its own radio station. Capital Radio was based there before relocating to Durban’s South Beach in KwaZulu-Natal. Shozi said the communities of the Port St John’s and OR Tambo regions shouldn’t press the panic button just yet. ”This long-awaited community radio station is on its way. The only thing I’m waiting for is a response regarding the equipment, but I was promised it would be

which would cost a lot of money. “So, I was compelled to relocate to Jungle Monkey and I have a letter in black and white which confirms the deal with Jungle Monkey,” said Shozi. He called on the local business people to support the initiative. “The station will benefit businesses, as well as the whole community.” The logo for the radio station has already been designed and the station is expected to broadcast on 88.5 fm. He said the branding had been developed. “We have designs for billboards, stationery and pull-up banners. Our whole marketing plan is in place. SYR is going to broadcast in 60% of IsiMpondo, 10% English and 30% of IsiXhosa. Training workshops are expected to be held in January and February.

Contractors receive certificates AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA THE first group to train at Mthatha’s construction incubator was awarded certificates after having completed their training. The event was hosted by the Small Enterprise Development Agency and – since the start of the programme in 2009 – this was the first group, boasting NQF4 and 2 levels. Gracing the event were some members of the Seda Construction Incubator (SCI) board, local municipality representatives, family members and friends of the graduates. SCI chairperson, Sbu Bophela, said their mandate was to develop emerging constructors throughout South Africa. “We offer five different phases to our contractors in order to provide them with basic understanding and support,” said Bophela. The contractors were trained in pre-construction, construction management, site supervision and in business advance input. One of the contractor companies who benefited from this three-year course is MaxWezie Civil and Building Contractors. “We have learnt a lot from this programme as constructors and our facilitators were very kind and understanding. They are driven by passion to develop contractors,” said Weziwe Zondani from MaxWezie Civil and Building Contractors. She said they now have an understanding of the importance of keeping records, having logos, taking care of SARS and also have

a good understanding of contract law. The target market for the incubator was the emerging Previously Disadvantaged Individual contractors who have achieved a financial grading of 3 or higher in civil engineering, general building, electrical engineering and specialised construction on the register of contractors administered by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

Pupils host birthday party for orphans NOMVUYO NTANJANA YOUNG Fighters, a charity group of 14 students from Ndamase Senior Secondary School in Ngqeleni, hosted a birthday party for destitute and orphaned children of Bethany Home in Kwezi last week Tuesday. The 71 orphaned children were treated with food and entertainment. The group, formed in 2011, aims at helping children in distress, as well as giving assistance to the elderly. The initiative’s president, Zandiswa Pama (18), said they were thinking of intervention mechanisms to establish decent living conditions. “This is our third visit to Bethany Home. We come and assist the caregivers by cleaning up the place, bathing the kids and helping to

feed them,” she said. “We know we can’t accomplish everything overnight, but giving these children this opportunity will occupy their minds and remind them that they have a place in our thoughts,” she added. The event was also a farewell party for the group, since its members would be studying at different universities next year. But Pama promised that they would continue to assist the home during holidays. Expressing gratitude, Bethany’s Social Worker, Shumikazi Mgwebi, said the group was very special. “We have 71 kids with 31 caregivers, so we really appreciate the assistance.” Bethany Home is a place of safety for abandoned, abused and neglected children from infancy to the age of 6. It was founded in 1991 and is subsidized by the department of Social Development.

Female farmers excel in Libode AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA THE Women in Agriculture and Rural Development (WAARD) hosted a farmer’s day for female farmers at Zandukwana location in Libode last Wednesday. WAARD is an organisation formed by rural women farming with vegetables, poultry and pigs, as well as other types of farming and crafts, like beadwork. Grace Matola, one of the members of the Masiphumelele Project in Zandukwana, said the women in this location formed a group and approached the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform offices in Libode for assistance. “We got all the information and assistance from the Libode office and their officers taught us many ways to farm, things we never knew,” said Matola. She said they now have greener gardens

Nonyaniso Kutwana, Chairperson for Libode WAARD, said this initiative was formed in 2006 to equip women in rural areas with farming skills, to enable them to take care of their families. “We learn and encourage each other through the skills we get from the department officials and we are also open to men who are willing to join us because we believe we can learn some things from them too,” she said. She encouraged the entire community to become part of this programmes to promote a healthy lifestyle and to alleviate poverty. Unemployment is rife in this area and agriculture forms the hub of the local economy. These farmers are also encouraged to enter the national Female Farmer Competition.

30 minutes with Mvomvo Who is Black Mvomvo? I am Zimvo Mpahleni from Mqanduli but I am based in Pretoria. I am the second-born out of two children. I did my primary education at James Kobi Junior Secondary School and then attended the Good Shepherd School. I matriculated at the Khanyisa High School.

Do you like what you do and is it fun? I started making people laugh back in 2007, when I was still at school and it was literally for fun. In 2010, I made it official, doing shows at churches.

Where and what did you study? I am currently bridging Law Studies with Unisa

How do you manage your time with comedy and studies demanding your attention? Most gigs are on weekends and in the evenings so my studies are not affected at all.

What qualifications does one need to excel in your industry? Be funny, have an eye for everyday issues and be able to see the fun(ny) side of every situation. Writing comedy is simple for me; I talk about what I see and what mostly interests people.

Have you shared the stage with other come dians? I have performed with Mondli Mziza from KZN, Sonwabile Sgcau from Mthatha and the Ngane Ngane duo (Sbo Mpungose and Simli Dlamini).

Zimvo Mpahleni from Mqanduli who is now based in Pretoria.

Umgosi

what we heard from the ladies about the guys in a relationship because nabo sometimes they do blunders. Watch the space we are coming back next week with our pens in our hands.

Keep the fire burning in your house This is for you ladies of the soil; since we love you we decided to convey to you what the guys are saying about you. Oh! Shame they are starting to open their ears wide to listen attentively, no it’s not a bad thing actually it’s just that this needs you to improve and keep the fire burning in your houses. What is it that make us curious kaloku? Okay they are complaining about your behaviour in an affair after you’ve dated for a long time. What is their complaint? Bathi at the beginning of the relationship you are so seductive but when the time goes by you become lazy and not taking anything seriously. Like if you used to wear those hot pants you change other types and things for granted whereas men always need their partners to be hot. They also mention that sometimes you go to bed wearing a golf shirt and that alone is a turn off to them. Where are the hot pants you used to wear at the beginning of the relationship? Nizoshiywa ke nilibele bubuvila. Take this advice from gossip team, failing which uyakulicula elakuncamisayo. Your partner will never be your brother – he always needs to be enticed. HAWWU! Zatsho madoda iintwana zomgosi. Do you get our point? Next time we will tell

Are they reasoning in their ‘upstairs’? We don’t think these monsters who rape kids are reasoning well in their minds. We called them monsters because there is no wise man who can rape a baby even if it is not a baby for that matter. This is disgracing the name of our proudly men on this world. So, this taboo makes our gifted flowers women to be scared to leave men with their children even if those children belong to that particular man because they have changed totally. OW! It’s hard on this world. As a gossip team we believe there is a satanic practice if not a witchcraft in this taboo. The fact that there is no hour passes on without a woman being raped on this Feverland shows that there is something wrong. We had the astonishment of our lives when we heard that there was a six-weeks-old baby who was raped by her 24- year-old uncle. Oh! It is disgusting, how can that be? This needs prayers because it seems as if Satan is overcasting the world. Shame, do you know how to pray gossip team? Mmm, umane ubuzana nathi wena ukuba siyakwazi na ukuthandaza, uyoshiyeka umunca izisini thina sibe singena sigijima e-Jerusalem. We wish that rape case could be presided by gossip team ebezawukhomba umzi onotywala

Kanti yena ude abephi owakhe umntu? Bafundi abathandekayo lusizi lumi lodwa emnqamlezweni ela le outie sihlala siyibona kwezi mnandi places. Itheni le outie boys? Kaloku daai chap sihlala siyibona ihamba nama-outie ahamba namacherrie wawo, mara eyayo intombi aside siyibone and ayincwasi nokuncwasa ukuba kubekwe ibhotile ecaleni kwayo kugqityiwe. Kube yi-outie ephile eyiphi impilo bethu? Because umntu wes’fazana uyadingeka empilweni yendoda. And iyazibonakalela nje ukuba akukho mntu wasetyhini uyinakekeleyo because ihlala ibetha ngala top ye-overall eluhlaza ene-oil kuyacaca ukuba ubhuti uphinde abe ngu-mechanic. Mara nani bafethu nihamba naye kutheni ningasamjongeli nokuba is an ugly woman achithe isithukuthezi ngoku nincokola nabenu. Yhuu, phofu ke ungamthini umntu ophila impilo yakhe, kuba kuyokwala sowumzamile wawuthatha ufish wawufraya wawubeka apha ecaleni kwakhe kodwa athi uhluthi. Ayikho ke engafunza enye indoda daai ding. And in social life akukho mntu wakowenu okujongileyo ukuba ungcathu emacherrini ezokwazi ukuba akufunele inyanga ithi ukugabhisa kuphume intaka. Shame! Ungathini wena?

Bafethu ezinye izinto zenzeka ude ungazi nokuba ungaziqala ngaphi maxa wambi. Kuyakwayintoni ngoku nitsho ngemilomo emikhulu kwiindaba zabantu? Siyeke wena this is our daily chore to keep you informed on this Feverland. Even if ungathi singoondaba zabantu nawe, kuba siziva kwangawe ezi ndaba ukuba asizibonelanga. Phela, last weekend we went out for a braai with our buddies at KwaNkohla. Sayitshisa ke sagqiba inyama sathi masike ‘sikape’ i-round apha eNgaru, just to check if we cannot lure one fish because one of our buddies was going alone and he told us that his girlfriend is in East London for the weekend. That’s what she told him. So, une visa moss. We are not talking about just ordinary girlfriend but a ‘straight one’. Siyayazi futhi because most of the time they are together namaxa siblomile sometimes sibloma nayo. As you know ukuthi amajita aneendawo ‘aloba’ kuzo. Sithe masike siye kule ndlu yala macherrie. Ngqi nge-‘straight’ salo mjita sibhince i-towel ngasentla sinxibe i-sleeping-shirt sothula i-washing. Mmm, yintoni le siyibonayo ke ngoku because bekuncono ukuba le-outie ayimbonanga kuqala ngoku sive ngayo isithi “yhuu, ingathi ngubani nje lo, Shame yena akasiboni wathi umjita masime ayothule agqibe then wathi xa ejika wabona iTuru-Turu 2, yabe ne outie le imkhwaza. Oh! Ulahle nalo washing phantsi, wee tshwa endlini. Ebevutha ubhuti wakho ngumsindo but simbongozile ukuba angayi kula ndlu because siyayazi ‘intshebe’ ehlala phaya kwaye ikwakuyo le group yethu kanti naye uyayazi. Uyabona ke ukuba kuyabethelwana apha phandle. Futhi ngulo uthi usondele kuwe. Sesivile ke ukuba usisi confessed ukuthi bebejola nalo mjita and it was the end of their relationship. Cabanga ke umfethu ebeselungiselela ukulobola. Sisi walahlekelwa ngumtshato kule mitshato inqabe kangaka kwaba uzakuthatha ke lo ukuhluthe intlaka emlonyeni. Kunzima neh?

FOCUS ON: 2014 WESBANK / SAGMJ CAR OF THE YEAR

Will World Car of the Year also be SA Car of year? REPORTER HAVING won the coveted 2013 World Car of the Year award earlier in 2013, it’s no surprise that the seventh iteration of the iconic VW Golf is a finalist for 2014 COTY honours in South Africa. Powered by a 90 kW turbocharged petrol engine, the Golf 7 1.4 TSI 90kW Comfortline DSG features Volkswagen’s industryleading DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) double-clutch automatic gearbox, which offers incredible efficiency amongst other benefits like superbly smooth and quick gear changes. Ingenuity abounds in the new Golf, which is built on the VW Group’s MQB platform. Turbocharged power coupled to the seamless transmission translates into a car that is naturally great to drive and boasts great efficiency figures to boot, along with VW’s formidable build quality. The other finalists for the 2014 WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year com petition are (in alphabetical order): 2013 Audi A3 Sportback 1.4T FSI Manual

Choosing the winner: The next step in the process is a stringent two-day evaluation session to be held in Gauteng in January 2014. The evaluation days offer the Jury the opportunity of reacquainting themselves with the vehicles and specific aspects such as aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money, to name but a few. The Jury will also have access to independent performance test data, comparative pricing and specification data from RGT Smart, as well as comparative parts pricing data, compiled by Malcolm Kinsey. The winner of the 2014 WesBank / SAGMJ Car the Year will be revealed at a gala banquet in February 2014.

Cycling race to link Mthatha and PSJ SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE CYCLISTS from all over the Eastern Cape (EC) are expected to take part in the first annual Amaqhawe Heroes Cycle Challenge, which will start from Mthatha (UTA) and end at Port St John’s (PSJ) on December 15. The race will start at Myezo, Mthatha and end at Second Beach in Port St John’s and its

aim is to reach the forgotten areas and raise funds for bicycles, books and board games for the under-privileged children in various hospitals and schools in the OR Tambo region. This event is made possible by Silimela SA Sechaba, an event-organising company from the EC and they are expecting a lot of support from EC cyclists and cyclists from neighbouring provinces.

“We are all about cycling and bringing smiles to the disadvantaged. We strongly believe in UBUNTU (humanity) and what it stands for. We don’t just want to just talk about UBUNTU, we want to live it. With the Amaqhawe Cycle Challenge (Wildly cycling for the kids) we will be continuously striving to show and be part of the Ubuntu movement by helping those in need,” said one of the event organizers, Zama Tikana. He revealed that the race also pays homage to the heroes of South Africa (Amaqhawe) who struggled for a better South Africa for all. “With our cycle challenge, we will be trying to emulate the selfless act of Amaqhawe (SA heroes) that have set us on the path we are in

today by providing the opportunity for the kids to see brighter future available to them and also by providing an escape route from their situations. We hope to positively touch the children of the Wild Coast and attempt to affect their future.” Tikana said they were targeting to raise funds to be able to buy books to the value of R15 000, educational games and toys for the under-privileged children in Mthatha, Ntlaza and Port St John’s. “We plan to make the end of 2013 a joyful year for the kids.” To enter visit www.silimelasasechaba.co.za/Amaqhawe.pdf or go to register at Myezo Engen Wimpy, Mthatha. This 105km race will start at 6:30.
