THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE MT GRAVATT BOWLS CLUB.inc 1873 Logan Road Upper Mt Gravatt 4122 Editor Don Hamilton Phone 33492367 – Fax 33492787 Email: d.y.ham@bigpond.com Email: secretary@mtgravattbowlsclub.com Website: http://www.mtgravattbowlsclub.com Jan – Feb 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------Happy New Year and Good Bowling to everyone. This edition of the Newsletter will be the first to be printed in colour (make a nice change from those rather poor Black & white photos) Thanks to Southside and Graham Chattin for this. However we need to keep the number of copies printed to a minimum so if you would like to receive your copy via email (on the day it is put out) please let me know at the above email address. Your address will only be used for this by me and it will come as a pdf. file which is quite small for email and won’t use very much of your internet allowance. And of course, thanks to Trish Hassam, you can access it on the Club Website at the address above. Thank you Don H .................................................................................................................................................................................. Ladies President Report Early December sees the Ladies Section take a holiday from our designated Tuesday Bowling day. The closing days of the year were busy. Bowling Championships for 2011 were completed. Financial day, Patron and Patroness Day, followed by Christmas Party. We return on 24th January 2012. 2011 heralded the end of an era at Mount Gravatt Bowls Club. One of the contributions to the Club by the Ladies Section, for many years, was food catering for functions, birthdays, special bowls events etc. Changes in Management, Licensing Laws and Workplace Health and Safety Laws has necessitated the ladies relinquish this long held tradition to Southside Sport and Community Club. As a relatively new bowler I can only guess at the organisational skills needed and friendships formed amongst the women involved in catering over many years. Thank you all. Patron and Patroness Day saw Ena Carson and Allan Mitchell combine their Special Day this year. Southside Staff decorated the Carson Room to help make this a special day. A game of bowls was followed by a hot lunch. Ena and Allan donated the financial prizes distributed to the bowlers. The Ladies Christmas hamper and handmade Christmas Decorations donated by Betty Vass, combined with other prizes. Ham, fruit, and backpack donated by Ena with a basket of goodies from Renaissance Retirement Village, wine from Southside. Over $500 was raised for Club. Thank you to all who participated. It was satisfying to see the Raffle Prizes distributed to those present at the lunch. Syd received his decorations the following Thursday (no he was not knighted) Our bowling year culminated with the Christmas Party (break up day for 2011) the final game of Fours Championship was played alongside Social Bowls. We saw the year out with Auld Lang Syne. I led the singing on the microphone. That helped people to end the festivities – no I will not give up my day job for singing. However everyone joined in held hands and ended the year in good spirits. On behalf of the Ladies Section I extend to all - All the Best for 2012 – Mary Ferro President Ladies Section.

Men's Presidents Report I hope all our bowlers have had a happy and joyous Christmas break and are looking forward to approaching 2012 with renewed enthusiasm. December was quite a busy month at the club with the running of the final rounds of the Open Singles competition which was conducted in a sets play format consisting of two games of nine ends followed by a tie break of three ends if required. The format appeared to be very popular with a lot of impressive bowling on display. Congratulations to all who participated in particular to Ted Read who was successful from a determined Ron Lewis in the final. The annual Children’s Christmas party was enjoyed by all who attended and it was wonderful to see the happiness and joy expressed by the children. A sincere thank you to all concerned who make this event possible. Patron/Patroness Day took place on the 11th December and was well attended. An enjoyable morning of bowls was followed by an equally enjoyable hot lunch. Southside staff are to be commended on the presentation of the Carson room and the lunch that followed. The Mens 'B' Singles and the Mens Self Select Triples competitions will commence in early January as will the Super Challenge and Premier Sevens in which we have teams entered. Good luck to all participants. Finally a very big thank you to all the dedicated people who turn up week after week to volunteer their time and effort to ensure the successful operation of our club. We can always use an extra hand. If you would like to assist in any way please contact myself or Assistant Greens Director Ken Peters. Alan Girvan

President Men's Section Deirdre’s Club Chat A Happy New Year to you all. No doubt there are a few suffering from the overindulgences of the festive season.

The children’s Christmas tree was once again an outstanding success. Sincere thanks to all who made it happen. We are hopeful of holding the event for this year, at least, with the help of some fundraising. At a recent board meeting it was proposed that a special day be held for this purpose with proceeds of the day going towards the Christmas tree function. The tentative date is the 24th June. Quite a few travellers afoot: Gwen and Norm Rafton set sail for New Zealand in early December as did John and Barbara Gamlin. Stephanie and George Porter have got really adventurous, cruising to Antarctica for Christmas. On the home front Reg and Bev Walls took off in their motor home travelling south calling in to Canberra and visiting the war museum. On returning from their cruise, Gwen and Norm revved up the Winnebago also heading south to spend Christmas with family. I am sure Patron Allan and Patroness Ena would have been impressed and delighted with the success of their “Day”. The dining room looked an absolute picture and the meal was delicious. Congratulations to Southside staff on a job well done. The stork has been busy of late. Congratulations to Allan and Di Girvan on the arrival of their first great grandchild; Reg and Bev Walls welcoming their first grandchild and Kevin and Lorna Cavanough on their great grandchild. Condolences to Geoff and David Devencorn on the passing of their mother and grandmother. Sincerest sympathy to you and your family. Looking forward to catching up with you all when bowls resumes. Cheers, Deirdre

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Another year has come and gone and now we are into 2012 – Happy New Year everyone. One of Southside’s major successes in 2011 was the fundraising breakfast for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia where we raised an incredible $50,000 which was $10,000 over and above our target. Those who attended were treated to some excellent entertainment by Wickety Wak members, Rob Rosenlund, Pahnie Jantzen and Tony Jeffery, the very talented impressionist and comedian Danny McMaster and key speaker Dr Michael Gillman. The event was again well supported by the bowlers both in attendance at the breakfast and through raffle ticket sales – a big thank you for your support. By the time you all read this column we will have, hopefully, finished the Carson Room renovation with the new carpet and tiles being the final finishing touches. To assist us to properly market the Carson Room the Southside Management Committee has approved the installation of a six metre high pylon sign to be erected on the fence line adjacent to the entry driveway. The pylon sign will include LED electronic display panels similar to those in the pylon sign at Southside. This will give us the capability to get messages across to the thousands of motorists who drive along Logan Road every day. While the new illuminated pylon sign will primarily promote the Carson Room it will also help put the Bowls Club on the map as well by becoming a point of interest. Change always comes hard, especially in a bowls club when things have been done a certain way for more than fifty years and usually by volunteers who give of their time freely for the benefit of the club. Unfortunately, we now live in a world where no one takes responsibility for their own actions anymore and we have a legal system that appears to encourage litigation for something as simple as someone stubbing their toe – compensation is the new catchword. For this reason Governments are introducing new laws every year to protect us from ourselves and food handling is one issue that is squarely in their sights. The Brisbane City Council’s “Eat Safe” program is typical of the new standards being introduced and it should be embraced. It involves specialised staff training, new food handling procedures and kitchen health standards. While I am proud to announce that Southside Sport and Community Club achieved the highest rating, 5 stars, the Bowls Club also achieved a very high 4 star rating. A major part of the rating system involves food handling standards and that ladies and gentlemen is why we have had to restrict access to the kitchen and restrict food that is brought in by well-intentioned members. This is now 2012 and things have changed and we all have to move with the times and legislative requirements. We are operating a licensed commercial kitchen from which food is served to the public and we must adhere to the environmental health standards. The restricted kitchen access is not about offending people or preventing a member from sharing their cooking ability with their friends. It is about complying with the law. I hope everyone now has a better understanding of the way we operate the facilities at your club. Thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to a prosperous New Year. Graham Chattin

Sponsorship Manager’s Report New Sponsors: Welcome to the following new sponsor; eco-Kinetics Solar Energy Solutions who sponsored a Wednesday Men’s Pairs event in November. Recent Events The final Retirement Village Bowls Day for the year in November attracted maximum numbers with 15 rinks of triples being played. This day was sponsored by Apia who will also be sponsoring further events in 2012. Upcoming events There are two events other than our weekly games to cover the period to end of February. These are; Monday Fours held where there are five Mondays in a month. This is being held on Monday 30th January. Team sheet is on Men’s noticeboard. This will be sponsored by ‘The Village at Cooparoo”. Retirement Village Bowls Day to be held on Friday 10th February, sponsored by Mr Ross Vasta MP, Federal Member for Bonner. Indications are this event will again fill our greens. Events - General With 2011 now in the past and 2012 soon to get into full swing, it is timely to look at what events worked well and proved popular and to make sure we include these in the Calendar. With the demise of the Seafood Days, we moved to a Club Selected Mixed Triples format and ran three of these in 2011. These were retained as “Members Only” events and this proved popular. Three are planned for 2012. The Retirement Village Days have proved very popular and four have been included in the 2012 Calendar. It has been decided not to run the Queen’s Birthday Fours event in 2012 following the poor response and eventual cancellation of the event in 2011. On the positive side the inaugural Easter Pairs proved a success and it has been decided to again stage this event. 2012 Calendar Completion of the Calendar and accompanying Sponsors’ Listing is imminent and will soon be available from the Club, in front of the Selectors Office. Trish Hassam is also listing it on our Club Website. This is a huge job as each day has to be entered separately. Our thanks to the Hon Phil Reeves MP, State Member for Mansfield, for the printing of our Calendar. Newsletter Until now our Club Newsletter has been printed in black and white with our sincere thanks to Mr Graham Perrett MP Federal Member for Moreton for doing so. We have had an offer from Mr Graham Chattin General Manager Southside Sport and Community Club to produce it in colour provided we do not require any more than 100 copies. A count of the previous newsletter usage indicates we should be able to manage with 100 copies and we have accepted the generous offer. It looks so much better in colour, particularly photographs. One way you as Members can assist in this is to agree to receive your copy by email. Please advise your email address to Don Hamilton whose email address appears on the front of this newsletter and he will ensure you receive it in this manner. The advantages are you receive it the day it is completed and you can then save it on your computer for future reference. A reminder that the newsletter is also posted on our Website; details of which are included on the front of the newsletter.

We enjoy the support of a large number of sponsors from many business areas. If you are considering a purchase of goods or services, please consider our sponsors first. They put a lot into our Club and deserve our support. Reg Walls Sponsorship Manager

Thank you whoever left this in my pigeon hole, all contributions are welcome Ain’t it the truth though!

GAMES DIRECTOR 2011 was a successful year for our club we have changed our approach to the way we run our bowls calendar. Major changes have been the reorganisation of Seafood Day to Club Selected Mixed Triples for which our patronage has been very successful each of the four programmes attracted 60 plus players. With our sponsors very happy with format. Other changes this year was to run the Open Singles in a new format of Sets Play this was very successful competition with 50 players competing. It was pleasing to see two ladies (Cathy Lewis and Veronica Elliot) make the semi-finals. Final being played out by Ted Read and Ron Lewis with standard of bowls at a very high level. Congratulations to Ted Read in winning final.

Mt Gravatt Bowls Club also runs Men’s Monday Fours Circuit whenever there is a 5th Monday of a month. This has been well patronised by our members. Also our Club has taken on running an Inter Retirement Village Day run by Reg Walls, this has been a very successful outing for our Club, and hopefully we will acquire new members. Our Club Championships are running well with A Singles Club fours and A Pairs completed. Currently the triples are in progress with our B Pairs, Novice, C, B and Vet Singles to be run. Ted Read Games Director ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations Alex on your award and community spirit

Do you understand this law? The Super Challenge competition seems to bring out a few specialist unofficial coaches. Be wary of any people giving advice from the sidelines or spectator area. Coaching during side fixtures is quite legitimate providing it is done strictly in accordance with the Laws of Lawn Bowls. The appropriate Law is:57

The manager or coach Either the manager or the coach of a player, team or side or, in their absence, the manager’s delegated deputy, can give advice to a player during the course of play as long as: 57.1 the umpire is given the names of the manager, the coach or the manager’s delegated deputy as appropriate before the game starts; 57.2 only one person gives advice at any one time; and 57.3 The person giving the advice does so from outside the boundaries of the green.

Do you own a Law Book? If not, there is an interesting paragraph [the first in the book] on Page 7 immediately following “Contents”. All bowlers should read this particular paragraph; Foreword Introduction No laws governing a sport can cope with every situation, and the laws governing the sport of bowls are no exception. Unusual situations not covered within the laws can often arise. The Laws of the Sport of Bowls (‘the laws’) have been drawn up in the spirit of true sportsmanship. So, if a situation arises that is not covered by these laws, players, markers and umpires should use their common sense and a spirit of fair play to decide on the appropriate course of action. If you do not wish to purchase a Law Book but if you possess a computer and access to the internet, you can Google up World Bowls, Bowls Australia or Bowls Queensland and read or download the Laws of the game of lawn bowls – “Crystal Mark 2nd edition”.

Should your team require a manager or coach to assist players during the game, the side manager or coach should approach the umpire of the day before the game starts and advise him of this intention and give the umpire his name and, if possible, actually introduce himself or the intended coach to the umpire. If you are the skip and notice your manager or coach signalling to you to discuss any point, advise the opposing skip of your intention to leave the green for this purpose. Ensure that the discussion is short and to the point to avoid delaying the game.

Also, should you desire, you will find the details of Bowls Australia “Policies” on their website. Policies are many and varied and include policies on: Clearances Transfers Appealing against the Umpire’s decision Procedures to follow when lodging an appeal Bowls testing Artificial device Etc.
