EXPORT MAGAZINE: In the field of professional hairdryers, how important is it to be able to innovate and what is the new technology Tecno Elettra offers? DANIELE FOCANTE: In the field of hairdryers, as in any other technological sector, innovation is at the basis of progress. For our type of product, progress travels along three paths: weight, power and design. We cannot speak of progress if we do not obtain the maximum in each of these three factors. There is also a fourth factor that has to be added, i.e. an attentive study of the packaging. These objectives are always at the basis of any activity in the R&D sector of our company. Tecno Elettra continues its innovation at the service of the hair stylist by promoting Brushless Technology, i.e. a 100% Made in Italy electronic motor which avoids the use of carbon brushes and therefore the relative consumption. This motor is made in Italy and has nothing in common with the performances of an imported electronic motor. This type of motor that Tecno Elettra adopted a year ago for some of its products must not “frighten” the traditional consumer Why? Because although it is true that the use of the electronic motor in the world of hairdryers is relatively recent in terms of time, it is also true that it is not a new technology in absolute terms, actually quite the contrary. For years now, it has been used in a very wide range of products that are extremely different from one another, and so with peace of mind we can say that it is a safe and guaranteed technology, safe
for the user and guaranteed in terms of performance. In other words, brushless technology applied to the motor of a hairdryer does not bring any “side effect” with it, typical of the latest generation of technologies which are not adequately tested before being put on the market. EM: What are the advantages that a brushless hairdryer can guarantee for the hair stylist? DF: The new brushless technology is translated into a considerable advantage for the hair stylist who obtained a hairdryer with an unlimited life. The fact that in this type of motor there are no components subject to wear and tear (in this case the carbon brushes) and the use of an electronic system guarantee a product that is certainly more efficient and with a working life span that has no comparison. With the same power, the Brushless motor is lighter and therefore automatically the hairdryer is not so heavy and this obviously is translated into less physical effort for the person working all the time with a hairdryer. Lastly, Tecno Elettra has used this particular motor in a line of high-end products, the Cross Line, creating the Brushless cross-line: a product of excellence both in its components (100% made in Italy) and in the design and elegance. With pleasure and satisfaction we can well say that our customers immediately appreciated it and thought very highly of it. EM: What is the impact on the environment of this new technology? DF: It considerably reduced both environmental pollution, as there are no carbon brushes, (which inevitably wear out due to the rubbing) and so there are no emissions of particles of graphite into the atmosphere) and noise pollution, as it is a motor with a very low acoustic impact.
In conclusion, brushless technology on the one hand allows the creation of an “immortal” product as said earlier, and on the other, as a consequence, offers a saving in terms of spare parts and raw materials used, thus also promoting a product with a reduced environmental impact as direct consequence of what was said earlier. EM: Is this type of hairdryer particularly expensive, compared to a traditional hairdryer? DF: What is cost? Certainly not the amount of money, but the ratio between the value of the product and its price. In this case, the intrinsic value of the product is very high: 100% Italian quality, impeccable design, elegant colours, a technologically advanced motor with an unlimited duration, all in an eye-catching and extremely elegant packaging, nevertheless, for a very high-end product like our Cross Brushless, the price is contained and less than that of our competitors.

In a small hairdresser’s shop in the centre of Milan, in Via San Paolo, Spiridione Calabrese started, almost for fun, concocting hair dyes and then making lipsticks and face powders.

He is also alleged to have been the first to create the formula to melt and solidify lipsticks in sticks. Spiridione Calabrese’s passion for fragrances was handed down to his son Antonio and then to his children Cristina, Lorenzo and Giorgio, who today successfully give a modern interpretation to the family brand. great expectations at beautyworld middle east 2017 The business of beauty is surging ahead in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
According to the latest figures by analysts Euromonitor International (EMI), the retail value of the GCC’s beauty and personal care market was US$9.3 billion in 2016, an increase of 10 per cent over 2015. Strong growth is expected over the next four years, as consumers look to collectively spend US$13.6 billion on their personal well-being in 2020, defying any notion of a market readjustment. The figures include bath and shower products, colour cosmetics, fragrances, hair care, men’s grooming, skin care, and sun care, while regional growth is driven by a young and affluent population that has high awareness of fashion and beauty, boosted by media exposure. That is evident in the UAE, where consumers spent US$2.1 billion on beauty and personal care in 2016 according to EMI, with this set to rise to US$2.7 billion by 2020. The top five categories are fragrances (US$642 million), colour cosmetics (US$400 million), skin care and men’s grooming (both US$300 million), and hair care (US$283 million). The vibrant market sets the tone and lays the foundation for the return this year of Beautyworld Middle East, the region’s largest international trade fair for beauty products, hair, fragrances, and wellbeing.
Taking place from 14-16 May 2017 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, the 22nd edition of the three-day event is expected to feature more than 1,500 exhibitors from 60 countries. PERMANENT HAIR COLOR DEVELOPMENT FOLLOWS FEW ESSENTIAL steps COSMETIC BASE DEFINITION The base is either chosen among the available ones, or developed upon customer request; product claims and fragrance need to be identified in the early stages and can be chosen among the available options or developed new following a specific ingredients brief. New cosmetic bases (fatty phase) can also be developed upon customer request. Fragrance will also need to be defined in the early stages of the development. Frangrance will be chosen by the customer between a palette of proposal, customer can also suggest its own fragrance. Special cosmetic ingredient can be selected in function of the requested marketing positioning.
SHADING STEP The process of shading is one that involves taking a color technology and preparing shades to match benchmarks. Beauty & Business provides hair color in liquid or cream forms. Ammonia, Ammonia free technology is available. PPD & PPT free formulations are also part of the technology offered by Beauty and Business. Hair color can be developed in order to work at the desired ratio of application: 1:1 and 1:1,5 or 1:2 technology. The work of shading will be performed in our Technical Center of Osio Sotto following our standard protocol of half head testing. Testing on swatches followed by testing on models heads is our standard approach. During this time technical people from customer can visit to evaluate the development work and take part in the shade approval step.
Specifically, the shade can be approved by the customer at B&B site or always by the customer at their own site. In selected instances, and with previous agreement, approval of the nuance can be delegated to B&B technical people. Approval of a shade means the formula is locked up. Samples will be available to customer to evaluate the nuances during the shading step (3-6 tubes per each submission), before approval, and up to a certain number of color tubes per approved shade, after approval. The assumption for this step is that an adequate testing protocol is taking place in B&B Italian facility. Should, in the course of the development, emerge that customer requires extra testing or validation, then an adjustment to this step will be needed.
After formulas lock up, the laboratory can proceed at further instrumental validation tests: color fade, shine, combing, tensile strength, other tests can be done upon request.
REGULATORY check Part of this step is on parallel with development or shades and their approval. Beauty & Business provides complete services in order to develop formulations for all markets. After formulas are locked, the regulatory team can prepare: • INCI • MSDS (Material Safety data Sheets) • Documents to support foreign product registration • other documents specifically requested by customer. The Regulatory group will also be reviewing the artwork of the product in preparation to production steps. All formulas will be tested for safety.
INSTRUMENTAL VALIDATION This can be done in parallel with the development process of shading, as formulas are approved they can undergo the Instrumental Validation step.
INDUSTRIALIZATION Formula scale-up. This involves the preparation of pilot production or an industrial production scale if needed. FORMULA EXCLUSIVITY The formulas that are developed during each project will only be used for the customer commitioning the work, and for no other product.

FLEXIBILITY, STAYING SMALL AND MEETING THE WORLD: THIS IS THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS We met Sandra Maguarian and Jean-Yves Bourgeois, the co-founders of MakeUp In… at the Parisian offices of Beauteam, so that they could tell us about the journey over the years to organize no fewer than 5 make-up shows in the world
EXPORT MAGAZINE: Can we take stock of 2016? JEAN-YVES BOURGEOIS: Compared to 2015, we had a progression of 20% both in turnover and number of exhibitors. In 2016 there was the first MakeUp In Los Angeles which, although with only 30 exhibitors, had a good result. The make-up market trend has only reinforced the positioning of our shows, because small, medium and even some large brands are increasingly outsourcing their products. The first because they do not have a factory of their own and the others because there is the competition in development, innovation and creation, a characteristic of the present where the Internet and bloggers etc. mean that everything happens faster. For the brands to be flexible and innovative, they have to be able to react quickly, and this is where the role of those suppliers who have adopted the strategy of producing quality and advanced products becomes important. Many Italian companies have been highly performing in the sector for years, both in formulating and producing make-up and in having generated the notion of full service. The suppliers often also deal with packaging and accessories. EM: Are you satisfied with the positioning of the show? JYB: Yes, absolutely, we are the full service show for make-up and for

the whole supply chain: 60% of our exhibitors are in formulation, 20-25% in packaging, the remainder in accessories. At the first edition in Paris in 2010, we were aware of the dynamism in the sector but in the past couple of years there has been maximum acceleration. We now organize 5 shows, on 4 different continents: after Paris, New York, then Seoul, São Paulo and lastly Los Angeles. Every two months our exhibitors and visitors meet. EM: Have you created these editions to meet market requirements? SANDRA MAGUARIAN: More precisely it was the exhibitors of MakeUp In Paris who, from as early as 2010, considering the success of the first edition, asked us specifically for the same formula in New York, and then elsewhere. The exhibitors are not always the same as in Paris; some want to exhibit
at several shows, others in rotation; obviously many of the exhibitors are local in the individual countries. JYB: We are always attentive to our exhibitors: some requested an event on the West Coast, so in Los Angeles; Seoul was suggested to us by a couple of our well-known exhibitors and in any case met the need to have a show in Asia. We had already explored Korea to recruit companies for the existing shows. The Asian market is important, but for cultural reasons, not all countries are ready to exhibit in Korea. This is why, from 2018, the Asian show will be held in rotation in Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo. EM: You have proven that you have started a machine that works… SM: Thank you… improvement is always possible and they say it takes eight years before you can say a show in consolidated….

JYB: The fact of being in 4 continents helps establish the concept that we are in a fantastic dynamic which lets us know everything, or almost, of what is going on in the world in make-up. All the players are present, we have a broad spectrum, in two days, marketing people – about 55% of our visitors, R&D, and buyers can meet… SM: Without forgetting the business between exhibitors as well, they know one another and consider themselves more colleagues than competitors… this is a phenomenon only in make-up, I could not say it about other sectors such as fragrance where there is declared antagonism. EM: How do you manage to make the show always interesting, bearing in mind that in the small world of make-up, practically everyone knows everyone else and they meet every year at a rendezvous they cannot miss? JYB: This is only partly true. Each year there is something new: for example in 2016 we added some large companies of ingredients and the digital sector. SM: We are never static, there is a renewal in the offer both in exhibitors, in Paris 10 or 15 are new, and for the collections that are presented exclusively at MakeUp In Paris and New York.
At our shows, you can discover marketing trends, hear high quality talks, both for the subjects and the specialists giving them. About half of the 3200 visitors to the Paris show attend the talks. New players can also be discovered who can give new ideas to develop new products not previously thought of. The brands have to be “nourished” all the time. We are there to look after them, with talks, activities, cultural exhibitions and visiting as many stands as possible.
